| James 4:1 | What causes wars and contentions among you? Is it not the cravings which are ever at war within you for various pleasures? | Where do wars and fightings among you come from? Don't they come from your pleasures that war in your members? | What is the cause of wars and fighting among you? is it not in your desires which are at war in your bodies? |
| James 4:2 | You covet things and yet cannot get them; you commit murder; you have passionate desires and yet cannot gain your end; you begin to fight and make war. You have not, because you do not pray; | You lust, and don't have. You kill, covet, and can't obtain. You fight and make war. Yet you don't have, because you don't ask. | You are burning with desire, and have not your desire, so you put men to death; you are full of envy, and you are not able to get your desire, so you are fighting and making war; you have not your desire, because you do not make request for it. |
| James 4:3 | or you pray and yet do not receive, because you pray wrongly, your object being to waste what you get on some pleasure or another. | You ask, and don't receive, because you ask amiss, so that you may spend it for your pleasures. | You make your request but you do not get it, because your request has been wrongly made, desiring the thing only so that you may make use of it for your pleasure. |

| James 4:14 | when, all the while, you do not even know what will happen to-morrow. For what is the nature of your life? Why, it is but a mist, which appears for a short time and then is seen no more. | Whereas you don't know what your life will be like tomorrow. For what is your life? For you are a vapor, that appears for a little time, and then vanishes away. | When you are not certain what will take place tomorrow. What is your life? It is a mist, which is seen for a little time and then is gone. |
| James 4:15 | Instead of that you ought to say, "If it is the Lord's will, we shall live and do this or that." | For you ought to say, "If the Lord wills, we will both live, and do this or that." | But the right thing to say would be, If it is the Lord's pleasure and if we are still living, we will do this and that. |
