John 18:1After offering this prayer Jesus went out with His disciples to a place on the further side of the Ravine of the Cedars, where there was a garden which He entered Himself and His disciples. When Jesus had spoken these words, he went forth with his disciples over the brook Kidron, where was a garden, into which he entered, himself and his disciples. When Jesus had said these words he went out with his disciples over the stream Kedron to a garden, into which he went with his disciples.
John 18:2Now Judas also, who at that very time was betraying Him, knew the place, for Jesus had often resorted there with His disciples. Now Judas, who betrayed him, also knew the place, for Jesus often resorted there with his disciples. And Judas, who was false to him, had knowledge of the place because Jesus went there frequently with his disciples.
John 18:3So Judas, followed by the battalion and by a detachment of the Temple police sent by the High Priests and Pharisees, came there with torches and lamps and weapons.Judas then, having taken a detachment of soldiers and officers from the chief priests and the Pharisees, came there with lanterns, torches, and weapons. So Judas, getting a band of armed men and police from the chief priests and Pharisees, went there with lights and with arms.
John 18:4Jesus therefore, knowing all that was about to befall Him, went out to meet them. "Who are you looking for?" He asked them.Jesus therefore, knowing all the things that were coming on him, went forth, and said to them, "Who are you looking for?"Then Jesus, having knowledge of everything which was coming on him, went forward and said to them, Who are you looking for?
John 18:5"For Jesus the Nazarene," was the answer. "I am he," He replied. (Now Judas who was betraying Him was also standing with them.)They answered him, "Jesus of Nazareth." Jesus said to them, "I AM." Judas also, who betrayed him, was standing with them.Their answer was, Jesus the Nazarene. Jesus said, I am he. And Judas, who was false to him, was there at their side.
John 18:6As soon then as He said to them, "I am he," they went backwards and fell to the ground. When therefore he said to them, "I AM," they went backward, and fell to the ground. And when he said to them, I am he, they went back, falling to the earth.
John 18:7Again therefore He asked them, "Who are you looking for?" "For Jesus the Nazarene," they said.Again therefore he asked them, "Who are you looking for?" They said, "Jesus of Nazareth."So again he put the question to them, Who are you looking for? And they said, Jesus the Nazarene.
John 18:8"I have told you," replied Jesus, "that I am he. If therefore you are looking for me, let these my disciples go their way."Jesus answered, "I told you that I AM. If therefore you seek me, let these go their way,"Jesus made answer, I have said that I am he; if you are looking for me, let these men go away.
John 18:9He made this request in order that the words He had spoken might be fulfilled, "As for those whom Thou hast given me, I have not lost one."that the word might be fulfilled which he spoke, "Of those whom you have given me, I have lost none."(He said this so that his words might come true, I have kept safe all those whom you gave to me.)
John 18:10Simon Peter, however, having a sword, drew it, and, aiming at the High Priest's servant, cut off his right ear. The servant's name was Malchus.Simon Peter therefore, having a sword, drew it, and struck the high priest's servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant's name was Malchus. Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, took it out and gave the high priest's servant a blow, cutting off his right ear. The servant's name was Malchus.
John 18:11Jesus therefore said to Peter, "Put back your sword. Shall I refuse to drink the cup of sorrow which the Father has given me to drink?"Jesus therefore said to Peter, "Put up the sword into its sheath. The cup which the Father has given me, shall I not drink it?"Then Jesus said to Peter, Put back your sword: am I not to take the cup which my Father has given to me?
John 18:12So the battalion and their tribune and the Jewish police closed in, and took Jesus and bound Him.So the detachment, the commanding officer, and the officers of the Jews, seized Jesus and bound him,Then the band and the chief captain and the police took Jesus and put cords round him.
John 18:13They then brought Him to Annas first; for Annas was the father-in-law of Caiaphas who was High Priest that year.and led him to Annas first, for he was father-in-law to Caiaphas, who was high priest that year. They took him first to Annas, because Annas was the father-in-law of Caiaphas who was the high priest that year.
John 18:14(It was this Caiaphas who had advised the Jews, saying, "It is to your interest that one man should die for the People.")Now it was Caiaphas who gave counsel to the Jews, that it was expedient that one man should die for the people. It was Caiaphas who had said to the Jews that it was in their interest for one man to be put to death for the people.
John 18:15Meanwhile Simon Peter was following Jesus, and so also was another disciple. The latter was known to the High Priest, and went in with Jesus into the court of the High Priest's palace.Simon Peter followed Jesus, as did another disciple. Now that disciple was known to the high priest, and entered in with Jesus into the court of the high priest;And Simon Peter went after Jesus with another disciple. Now that disciple was a friend of the high priest and he went in with Jesus into the house of the high priest;
John 18:16But Peter remained standing outside the door, till the disciple who was acquainted with the High Priest came out and induced the portress to let Peter in.but Peter was standing at the door outside. So the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to her who kept the door, and brought in Peter. But Peter was kept outside at the door. Then this other disciple, who was a friend of the high priest, came out and had a word with the girl who kept the door, and took Peter in.
John 18:17This led the girl, the portress, to ask Peter, "Are you also one of this man's disciples?" "No, I am not," he replied. Then the maid who kept the door said to Peter, "Are you also one of this man's disciples?" He said, "I am not."Then the girl who was the door-keeper said to Peter, Are you not one of this man's disciples? In answer he said, I am not.
John 18:18Now because it was cold the servants and the police had lighted a charcoal fire, and were standing and warming themselves; and Peter too remained with them, standing and warming himself. Now the servants and the officers were standing there, having made a fire of coals, for it was cold. They were warming themselves. Peter was with them, standing and warming himself. Now the servants and the police had made a fire of coals because it was cold; they were warming themselves in front of it and Peter was there with them, warming himself.
John 18:19So the High Priest questioned Jesus about His disciples and His teaching. The high priest therefore asked Jesus of his disciples, and of his teaching. Then the high priest put questions to Jesus about his disciples and his teaching.
John 18:20"As for me," replied Jesus, "I have spoken openly to the world. I have continually taught in some synagogue or in the Temple where all the Jews are wont to assemble, and I have said nothing in secret.Jesus answered him, "I spoke openly to the world. I always taught in synagogues, and in the temple, where the Jews always meet. I said nothing in secret.Jesus made answer, I said things openly to the world at all times; I have given my teaching in the Synagogues and in the Temple to which all the Jews come; and I have said nothing secretly.
John 18:21Why do you question me? Question those who heard what it was I said to them: these witnesses here know what I said."Why do you ask me? Ask those who have heard me what I said to them. Behold, these know the things which I said."Why are you questioning me? put questions to my hearers about what I have said to them: they have knowledge of what I said.
John 18:22Upon His saying this, one of the officers standing by struck Him with his open hand, asking Him as he did so, "Is that the way you answer the High Priest?"When he had said this, one of the officers standing by slapped Jesus with his hand, saying, "Do you answer the high priest like that?"When he said this, one of the police by his side gave him a blow with his open hand, saying, Do you give such an answer to the high priest?
John 18:23"If I have spoken wrongly," replied Jesus, "bear witness to it as wrong; but if rightly, why that blow?"Jesus answered him, "If I have spoken evil, testify of the evil; but if well, why do you beat me?"Jesus said in answer, If I have said anything evil, give witness to the evil: but if I said what is true, why do you give me blows?
John 18:24So Annas sent Him bound to Caiaphas the High Priest.Annas sent him bound to Caiaphas, the high priest. Then Annas sent him chained to Caiaphas, the high priest.
John 18:25But Simon Peter remained standing and warming himself, and this led to their asking him, "Are you also one of his disciples?" He denied it, and said, "No, I am not."Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. They said therefore to him, "Are you also one of his disciples?" He denied it, and said, "I am not."But Simon Peter was still there warming himself by the fire. They said to him, Are you not one of his disciples? He said, No, I am not.
John 18:26One of the High Priest's servants, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, said, "Did I not see you in the garden with him?"One of the servants of the high priest, being a relative of him whose ear Peter cut off, said, "Didn't I see you in the garden with him?"One of the servants of the high priest, a relation of him whose ear had been cut off by Peter, said, Did I not see you with him in the garden?
John 18:27Once more Peter denied it, and immediately a cock crowed.Peter therefore denied again, and immediately the rooster crowed. Then again Peter said, No. And straight away a cock gave its cry.
John 18:28So they brought Jesus from Caiaphas's house to the Praetorium. It was the early morning, and they would not enter the Praetorium themselves for fear of defilement, and in order that they might be able to eat the Passover. They led Jesus therefore from Caiaphas into the Praetorium. It was early, and they themselves didn't enter into the Praetorium, that they might not be defiled, but might eat the Passover. So they took Jesus from the house of Caiaphas to the Praetorium. It was early. They themselves did not go into the Praetorium, so that they might not become unclean, but might take the Passover.
John 18:29Accordingly Pilate came out to them and inquired, "What accusation have you to bring against this man?"Pilate therefore went out to them, and said, "What accusation do you bring against this man?"So Pilate came out to them and put the question: What have you to say against this man?
John 18:30"If the man were not a criminal," they replied, "we would not have handed him over to you."They answered him, "If this man weren't an evildoer, we wouldn't have delivered him up to you."They said to him in answer, If the man was not a wrongdoer we would not have given him up to you.
John 18:31"Take him yourselves," said Pilate, "and judge him by your Law." "We have no power," replied the Jews, "to put any man to death."Pilate therefore said to them, "Take him yourselves, and judge him according to your law." Therefore the Jews said to him, "It is not lawful for us to put anyone to death,"Then Pilate said to them, Take him yourselves and let him be judged by your law. But the Jews said to him, We have no right to put any man to death.
John 18:32They said this that the words might be fulfilled in which Jesus predicted the kind of death He was to die.that the word of Jesus might be fulfilled, which he spoke, signifying by what kind of death he should die.(That the word of Jesus might come true, pointing to the sort of death he would have.)
John 18:33Re-entering the Praetorium, therefore, Pilate called Jesus and asked Him, "Are *you* the King of the Jews?"Pilate therefore entered again into the Praetorium, called Jesus, and said to him, "Are you the King of the Jews?"Then Pilate went back into the Praetorium and sent for Jesus and said to him, Are you the King of the Jews?
John 18:34"Do you say this of yourself, or have others told it you about me?" replied Jesus.Jesus answered him, "Do you say this of yourself, or did others tell it to you concerning me?"Jesus made answer, Do you say this of yourself, or did others say it about me?
John 18:35"Am I a Jew?" exclaimed Pilate; "it is your own nation and the High Priests who have handed you over to me. What have you done?"Pilate answered, "Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests delivered you to me. What have you done?"Pilate said, Am I a Jew? Your nation and the chief priests have given you into my hands: what have you done?
John 18:36"My kingdom," replied Jesus, "does not belong to this world. If my kingdom did belong to this world, my subjects would have resolutely fought to save me from being delivered up to the Jews. But, as a matter of fact, my kingdom has not this origin."Jesus answered, "My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, then my servants would fight, that I wouldn't be delivered to the Jews. But now my kingdom is not from here."Jesus said in answer, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom was of this world, my disciples would have made a good fight to keep me out of the hands of the Jews: but my kingdom is not here.
John 18:37"So then *you* are a king!" rejoined Pilate. "Yes," said Jesus, "you say truly that I am a king. For this purpose I was born, and for this purpose I have come into the world to give testimony for the truth. Every one who is a friend of the truth listens to my voice."Pilate therefore said to him, "Are you a king then?" Jesus answered, "You say that I am a king. To this end have I been born, and to this end I have come into the world, that I should testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice."Then Pilate said to him, Are you then a king? Jesus made answer, You say that I am a king. For this purpose was I given birth, and for this purpose I came into the world, that I might give witness to what is true. Every lover of what is true gives ear to my voice.
John 18:38"What is truth?" said Pilate. But no sooner had he spoken the words than he went out again to the Jews and told them, "I find no crime in him.Pilate said to him, "What is truth?" When he had said this, he went out again to the Jews, and said to them, "I find no basis for a charge against him.Pilate said to him, True? what is true? Having said this he went out again to the Jews and said to them, I see no wrong in him.
John 18:39But you have a custom that I should release one prisoner to you at the Passover. So shall I release to you the King of the Jews?"But you have a custom, that I should release to you one at the Passover. Therefore do you desire that I release to you the King of the Jews?"But every year you make a request to me to let a prisoner go free at the Passover. Is it your desire that I let the King of the Jews go free?
John 18:40With a roar of voices they again cried out, saying, "Not this man, but Barabbas!" Now Barabbas was a robber. Then they all cried out again, saying, "Not this man, but Barabbas!" Now Barabbas was a robber. Then again they gave a loud cry, Not this man, but Barabbas. Now Barabbas was an outlaw.
