Luke 9:1Then calling the Twelve together He conferred on them power and authority over all the demons and to cure diseases; He called the twelve together, and gave them power and authority over all demons, and to cure diseases. And getting the twelve together, he gave them power and authority over all evil spirits and over diseases, to make them well.
Luke 9:2and sent them out to proclaim the Kingdom of God and to cure the sick.He sent them forth to preach the kingdom of God, and to heal the sick. And he sent them out to be preachers of the kingdom of God, and to make well those who were ill.
Luke 9:3And He commanded them, "Take nothing for your journey; neither stick nor bag nor bread nor money; and do not have an extra under garment. He said to them, "Take nothing for your journey neither staffs, nor wallet, nor bread, nor money; neither have two coats apiece. And he said to them, Take nothing for your journey, no stick or bag or bread or money, and do not take two coats.
Luke 9:4Whatever house you enter, make that your home, and from it start afresh.Into whatever house you enter, stay there, and depart from there. And if you go into a house, let that house be your resting-place till you go away.
Luke 9:5Wherever they refuse to receive you, as you leave that town shake off the very dust from your feet as a protest against them."As many as don't receive you, when you depart from that city, shake off even the dust from your feet for a testimony against them."And if any people will not take you in, when you go away from that town, put off its dust from your feet for a witness against them.
Luke 9:6So they departed and visited village after village, spreading the Good News and performing cures everywhere. They departed, and went throughout the villages, preaching the gospel, and healing everywhere. And they went away, journeying through all the towns, preaching the good news and making people free from diseases in all places.
Luke 9:7Now Herod the Tetrarch heard of all that was going on; and he was bewildered because of its being said by some that John had come back to life,Now Herod, the tetrarch, heard of all that was done by him; and he was very perplexed, because it was said by some that John had risen from the dead,Now Herod the king had news of all these things: and he was in doubt, because it was said by some people that John had come back from the dead;
Luke 9:8by others that Elijah had appeared, and by others that some one of the ancient Prophets had come back to life.and by some that Elijah had appeared, and by others that one of the old prophets had risen again. And by some, that Elijah had come; and by others, that one of the old prophets had come back to life.
Luke 9:9And Herod said, "John I have beheaded; but who is this, of whom I hear such reports?" And he sought for an opportunity of seeing Jesus.Herod said, "John I beheaded, but who is this, about whom I hear such things?" He sought to see him.And Herod said, I put John to death: but who is this, of whom such stories are given to me? And he had a desire to see him.
Luke 9:10The Apostles, on their return, related to Jesus all they had done. Then He took them and withdrew to a quiet retreat, to a town called Bethsaida. The apostles, when they had returned, told him what things they had done. He took them, and withdrew apart to a deserted place of a city called Bethsaida. And the twelve, when they came back, gave him an account of what they had done. And he took them with him and went away from the people to a town named Beth-saida.
Luke 9:11But the immense crowd, aware of this, followed Him; and receiving them kindly He proceeded to speak to them of the Kingdom of God, and those who needed to be restored to health, He cured. But the multitudes, perceiving it, followed him. He welcomed them, and spoke to them of the kingdom of God, and he cured those who needed healing. But the people, getting news of it, went after him: and he was pleased to see them, and gave them teaching about the kingdom of God, and made those well who were in need of it.
Luke 9:12Now when the day began to decline, the Twelve came to Him and said, "Send the people away, that they may go to the villages and farms round about and find lodging and a supply of food; because here we are in an uninhabited district."The day began to wear away; and the twelve came, and said to him, "Send the multitude away, that they may go into the surrounding villages and farms, and lodge, and get provisions, for we are here in a desert place."And the day went on; and the twelve came to him and said, Send these people away so that they may go into the towns and the country round about and get resting-places and food for themselves, for we are in a waste place.
Luke 9:13"You yourselves," He said, "must give them food." "We have nothing," they replied, "but five loaves and a couple of fish, unless indeed we were to go and buy provisions for all this host of people."But he said to them, "You give them something to eat." They said, "We have no more than five loaves and two fish, unless we should go and buy food for all these people."But he said, Give them food yourselves. And they said, We have only five cakes of bread and two fishes, if we do not go and get food for all these people.
Luke 9:14(For there were about 5,000 adult men.) But He said to His disciples, "Make them sit down in parties of about fifty each."For they were about five thousand men. He said to his disciples, "Make them sit down in groups of about fifty each."For there were about five thousand men. And he said to his disciples, Make them be seated in groups, about fifty to a group.
Luke 9:15They did so, making them all, without exception, sit down. They did so, and made them all sit down. And they did so, and made them all be seated.
Luke 9:16Then He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to Heaven He blessed them and broke them into portions which He gave to the disciples to distribute to the people. He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to the sky, he blessed them, and broke them, and gave them to the disciples to set before the multitude. And he took the five cakes of bread and the two fishes and, looking up to heaven, he said words of blessing over them, and when they had been broken, he gave them to the disciples to give to the people.
Luke 9:17So they ate and were fully satisfied, all of them; and what they had remaining over was gathered up, twelve baskets of fragments. They ate, and were all filled. They gathered up twelve baskets of broken pieces that were left over. And they all took the food and had enough; and they took up of the broken bits which were over, twelve baskets full.
Luke 9:18One day when He was praying by Himself the disciples were present; and He asked them, "Who do the people say that I am?"It happened, as he was praying alone, the disciples were with him, and he asked them, "Who do the multitudes say that I am?"And it came about that when he was in prayer, by himself, and the disciples were with him, he put a question to them, saying, Who do the people say I am?
Luke 9:19"John the Baptist," they replied; "but others say Elijah; and others that some one of the ancient Prophets has come back to life."They answered, "'John the Baptizer,' but others say, 'Elijah,' and others, that one of the old prophets is risen again."And they, answering, said, John the Baptist; but others say Elijah; and others, that one of the old prophets has come back.
Luke 9:20"But you," He asked, "who do you say that I am?" "God's Anointed One," replied Peter. He said to them, "But who do you say that I am?" Peter answered, "The Christ of God."And he said, But who do you say that I am? And Peter, answering, said, The Christ of God.
Luke 9:21And Jesus strictly forbad them to tell this to any one;But he warned them, and commanded them to tell this to no one,But he gave them special orders, not to say this to any man;
Luke 9:22and He said, "The Son of Man must suffer much cruelty, be rejected by the Elders and High Priests and Scribes, and be put to death, and on the third day be raised to life again."saying, "The Son of Man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders, chief priests, and scribes, and be killed, and the third day be raised up."Saying, The Son of man will undergo much and be put on one side by the rulers and the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and be put to death, and on the third day he will come back to life.
Luke 9:23And He said to all, "If any one is desirous of following me, let him ignore self and take up his cross day by day, and so be my follower. He said to all, "If anyone desires to come after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.And he said to them all, If any man has a desire to come after me, let him give up all, and take up his cross every day, and come after me.
Luke 9:24For whoever desires to save his life shall lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake shall save it.For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever will lose his life for my sake, the same will save it.For whoever has a desire to keep his life will have it taken from him, but whoever gives up his life because of me, will keep it.
Luke 9:25Why, what benefit is it to a man to have gained the whole world, but to have lost or forfeited his own self. For what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses or forfeits his own self? For what profit will a man have if he gets all the world, but undergoes loss or destruction himself?
Luke 9:26For whoever shall have been ashamed of me and my teachings, of him the Son of Man will be ashamed when He comes in His own and the Father's glory and in that of the holy angels. For whoever will be ashamed of me and of my words, of him will the Son of Man be ashamed, when he comes in the glory of himself, of the Father, and of the holy angels. For if any man has a feeling of shame because of me or of my words, the Son of man will have shame because of him when he comes in his glory and the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.
Luke 9:27I tell you truly that there are some of those who stand here who will certainly not taste death till they have seen the Kingdom of God."But I tell you the truth: There are some of those who stand here, who will in no way taste of death, until they see the kingdom of God."But truly I say to you, Some of those who are here now will have no taste of death till they see the kingdom of God.
Luke 9:28It was about eight days after this that Jesus, taking with Him Peter, John, and James, went up the mountain to pray.It happened about eight days after these sayings, that he took with him Peter, John, and James, and went up onto the mountain to pray. And about eight days after he had said these things, he took Peter and John and James with him and went up into the mountain for prayer.
Luke 9:29And while He was praying the appearance of His face underwent a change, and His clothing became white and radiant. As he was praying, the appearance of his face was altered, and his clothing became white and dazzling. And while he was in prayer, his face was changed and his clothing became white and shining.
Luke 9:30And suddenly there were two men conversing with Him, who were Moses and Elijah.Behold, two men talked with him, who were Moses and Elijah,And two men, Moses and Elijah, were talking with him;
Luke 9:31They came in glory, and kept speaking about His death, which He was so soon to undergo in Jerusalem.who appeared in glory, and spoke of his departure, which he was about to accomplish at Jerusalem.Who were seen in glory and were talking of his death which was about to take place in Jerusalem.
Luke 9:32Now Peter and the others were weighed down with sleep; but, keeping themselves awake all through, they saw His glory, and the two men standing with Him.Now Peter and those who were with him were heavy with sleep, but when they were fully awake, they saw his glory, and the two men who stood with him.Now Peter and those who were with him were overcome with sleep: but when they were fully awake, they saw his glory and the two men who were with him.
Luke 9:33And when they were preparing to depart from Him, Peter said to Jesus, "Rabbi, we are thankful to you that we are here. Let us put up three tents one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah." He did not know what he was saying. It happened, as they were parting from him, that Peter said to Jesus, "Master, it is good for us to be here. Let's make three tents: one for you, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah," not knowing what he said. And when they were about to go away from him, Peter said to Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here; let us make three tents, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah: having no knowledge of what he was saying.
Luke 9:34But while he was thus speaking, there came a cloud which spread over them; and they were awe-struck when they had entered into the cloud. While he said these things, a cloud came and overshadowed them, and they were afraid as they entered into the cloud. And while he said these things, the shade of a cloud came over them, and they were full of fear when they went into the cloud.
Luke 9:35Then there came a voice from within the cloud: "This is My Son, My Chosen One: listen to Him."A voice came out of the cloud, saying, "This is my beloved Son. Listen to him!"And there was a voice from the cloud saying, This is my Son, the man of my selection; give ear to him.
Luke 9:36After this voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. They kept it to themselves, and said not a word to any one at that time about what they had seen. When the voice came, Jesus was found alone. They were silent, and told no one in those days any of the things which they had seen. And after the voice was gone they saw that Jesus was by himself. And they kept quiet, and said nothing at that time to anyone of the things which they had seen.
Luke 9:37On the following day, when they were come down from the mountain, a great crowd came to meet Him;It happened on the next day, when they had come down from the mountain, that a great multitude met him.And on the day after, when they came down from the mountain, a great band of people came to him.
Luke 9:38and a man from the crowd called out, "Rabbi, I beg you to pity my son, for he is my only child.Behold, a man from the crowd called out, saying, "Teacher, I beg you to look at my son, for he is my only child. And a man from among them, crying out, said, Master, I make a request to you, give a thought to my son, for he is my only child:
Luke 9:39At times a spirit seizes him and he suddenly cries out. It convulses him, and makes him foam at the mouth, and does not leave him till it has well-nigh covered him with bruises.Behold, a spirit takes him, he suddenly cries out, and it convulses him so that he foams, and it hardly departs from him, bruising him severely. And see, a spirit takes him, and suddenly he gives a cry, twisted in pain and streaming at the lips, and when it goes away from him at last, he is marked as from blows.
Luke 9:40I entreated your disciples to expel the spirit, but they could not."I begged your disciples to cast it out, and they couldn't."And I made a request to your disciples to send it out of him, but they were not able to do it.
Luke 9:41"O unbelieving and perverse generation!" replied Jesus; "how long shall I be with you and bear with you? Bring your son here to me."Jesus answered, "Faithless and perverse generation, how long will I be with you and bear with you? Bring your son here."And Jesus said, O generation without faith and false in heart, how long will I have to be with you and put up with you? let your son come here.
Luke 9:42Now while the youth was coming, the spirit dashed him to the ground and cruelly convulsed him. But Jesus rebuked the foul spirit, and cured the youth and gave him back to his father. While he was still coming, the demon threw him down and convulsed him violently. But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed the boy, and gave him back to his father. And while he was coming, he was pushed violently down and twisted by the evil spirit. But Jesus gave sharp orders to the unclean spirit, and made the boy well, and gave him back to his father.
Luke 9:43And all were awe-struck at the mighty power of God. And while every one was expressing wonder at all that He was doing, He said to his disciples,They were all astonished at the majesty of God. But while all were marveling at all the things which Jesus did, he said to his disciples,And they were full of wonder at the great power of God. But while they were all wondering at all the things which he did, he said to his disciples,
Luke 9:44"As for you, store these my sayings in your memory; for, before long, the Son of Man will be betrayed into the hands of men.""Let these words sink into your ears, for the Son of Man will be delivered up into the hands of men."Let these words go deep into your ears, for the Son of man will be given up into the hands of men.
Luke 9:45But they did not understand His meaning: it was veiled from them that they might not perceive it, and they were afraid to ask Him about it.But they didn't understand this saying. It was concealed from them, that they should not perceive it, and they were afraid to ask him about this saying. But this saying was not clear to them and its sense was kept secret from them so that they were not able to see it: and they had fear of questioning him about it.
Luke 9:46Now there arose a dispute among them, which of them was to be the greatest. There arose an argument among them about which of them was the greatest. Now there was a discussion among them about which of them would be the greatest.
Luke 9:47And Jesus, knowing the reasoning that was in their hearts, took a young child and made him stand by His sideJesus, perceiving the reasoning of their heart, took a little child, and set him by his side,But when Jesus saw the reasoning of their hearts, he took a small child and put him by his side,
Luke 9:48and said to them, "Whoever for my sake receives this little child, receives me; and whoever receives me, receives Him who sent me. For the lowliest among you all he is the greatest."and said to them, "Whoever receives this little child in my name receives me. Whoever receives me receives him who sent me. For whoever is least among you all, this one will be great."And said to them, Whoever gives honour to this child in my name, gives honour to me: and whoever gives honour to me, gives honour to him who sent me: for whoever is least among you all, that man is great.
Luke 9:49"Rabbi," replied John, "we have seen a man making use of your name to expel demons; and we forbad him, because he does not come with us."John answered, "Master, we saw someone casting out demons in your name, and we forbade him, because he doesn't follow with us."And John, answering, said, Master, we saw a man driving out evil spirits in your name, and we did not let him do it, because he was not one of us.
Luke 9:50"Do not forbid him," said Jesus, "for he who is not against you is on your side."Jesus said to him, "Don't forbid him, for he who is not against us is for us."But Jesus said to him, Let him do it, for he who is not against you is for you.
Luke 9:51Now when the time drew near for Him to be received up again into Heaven, He proceeded with fixed purpose towards Jerusalem, and sent messengers before Him.It came to pass, when the days were near that he should be taken up, he intently set his face to go to Jerusalem,And it came about that when the days were near for him to be taken up, his face was turned to go to Jerusalem,
Luke 9:52They went and entered a village of the Samaritans to make ready for Him.and sent messengers before his face. They went, and entered into a village of the Samaritans, so as to prepare for him.And he sent men before: and they came to a small town of Samaria to make ready for him.
Luke 9:53But the people there would not receive Him, because He was evidently going to Jerusalem. They didn't receive him, because he was traveling with his face set towards Jerusalem. But they would not have him there, because he was clearly going to Jerusalem.
Luke 9:54When the disciples James and John saw this, they said, "Master, do you wish us to order fire to come down from Heaven and consume them?"When his disciples, James and John, saw this, they said, "Lord, do you want us to command fire to come down from the sky, and destroy them, just as Elijah did?"And when his disciples, James and John, saw this, they said, Lord, may we send fire from heaven and put an end to them?
Luke 9:55But He turned and rebuked them. But he turned and rebuked them, "You don't know what kind of spirit you are of.But turning round he said sharp words to them.
Luke 9:56And they went to another village. For the Son of Man didn't come to destroy men's lives, but to save them." They went to another village. And they went to another small town.
Luke 9:57And, as they proceeded on their way, a man came to Him and said, "I will follow you wherever you go."As they went on the way, a certain man said to him, "I want to follow you wherever you go, Lord."And when they were on the way, a certain man said to him, I will come after you wherever you go.
Luke 9:58"The foxes have holes," said Jesus, "and the birds of the air have nests; but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head."Jesus said to him, "The foxes have holes, and the birds of the sky have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head."And Jesus said to him, Foxes have holes and the birds of the air have resting-places, but the Son of man has nowhere to put his head.
Luke 9:59"Follow me," He said to another. "Master," the man replied, "allow me first to go and bury my father."He said to another, "Follow me." But he said, "Lord, allow me first to go and bury my father."And he said to another, Come after me. But he said, Lord, let me first go and give the last honours to my father.
Luke 9:60"Leave the dead," Jesus rejoined, "to bury their own dead; but you must go and announce far and wide the coming of the Kingdom of God."But Jesus said to him, "Leave the dead to bury their own dead, but you go and announce the kingdom of God."But he said to him, Let the dead take care of their dead; it is for you to go and give news of the kingdom of God.
Luke 9:61"Master," said yet another, "I will follow you; but allow me first to go and say good-bye to my friends at home."Another also said, "I want to follow you, Lord, but first allow me to bid farewell to those who are at my house."And another man said, I will come with you, Lord, but first let me say a last good-day to those who are at my house.
Luke 9:62Jesus answered him, "No one who has put his hand to the plough, and then looks behind him, is fit for the Kingdom of God.But Jesus said to him, "No one, having put his hand to the plow, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God."But Jesus said, No man, having put his hand to the plough and looking back, is good enough for the kingdom of God.
