Mark 7:1Then the Pharisees, with certain Scribes who had come from Jerusalem, came to Him in a body.Then the Pharisees, and some of the scribes gathered together to him, having come from Jerusalem.And there came together to him the Pharisees and certain of the scribes who had come from Jerusalem,
Mark 7:2They had noticed that some of His disciples were eating their food with `unclean' (that is to say, unwashed) hands.Now when they saw some of his disciples eating bread with defiled, that is, unwashed, hands, they found fault.And had seen that some of his disciples took their bread with unclean, that is, unwashed, hands.
Mark 7:3(For the Pharisees and all the Jews being, as they are, zealous for the traditions of the Elders never eat without first carefully washing their hands,(For the Pharisees, and all the Jews, don't eat unless they wash their hands and forearms, holding to the tradition of the elders.Now the Pharisees, and all the Jews, do not take food without washing their hands with care, keeping the old rule which has been handed down to them:
Mark 7:4and when they come from market they will not eat without bathing first; and they have a good many other customs which they have received traditionally and cling to, such as the rinsing of cups and pots and of bronze utensils, and the washing of beds.)They don't eat when they come from the marketplace, unless they bathe themselves, and there are many other things, which they have received to hold to: washings of cups, pitchers, bronze vessels, and couches.)And when they come from the market-place, they take no food till their hands are washed; and a number of other orders there are, which have been handed down to them to keep washings of cups and pots and brass vessels.
Mark 7:5So the Pharisees and Scribes put the question to Him: "Why do your disciples transgress the traditions of the Elders, and eat their food with unclean hands?"The Pharisees and the scribes asked him, "Why don't your disciples walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat their bread with unwashed hands?"And the Pharisees and the scribes put the question to him, Why do your disciples not keep the rules of the fathers, but take their bread with unwashed hands?
Mark 7:6"Rightly did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites," He replied; "as it is written, "`This People honour Me with their lips, while their hearts are far away from Me:He answered them, "Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written, 'This people honors me with their lips, But their heart is far from me.And he said, Well did Isaiah say of you, you false ones: These people give me honour with their lips, but their heart is far from me.
Mark 7:7But idle is their devotion while they lay down precepts which are mere human rules.'But in vain do they worship me, Teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.'But their worship is to no purpose, while they give as their teaching the rules of men.
Mark 7:8"You neglect God's Commandment: you hold fast to men's traditions.""For you set aside the commandment of God, and hold tightly to the tradition of men the washing of pitchers and cups, and you do many other such things."For, turning away from the law of God, you keep the rules of men.
Mark 7:9"Praiseworthy indeed!" He added, "to set at nought God's Commandment in order to observe your own traditions!He said to them, "Full well do you reject the commandment of God, that you may keep your tradition.And he said to them, Truly you put on one side the law of God, so that you may keep the rules which have been handed down to you.
Mark 7:10For Moses said, `Honour thy father and thy mother' and again, `He who curses father or mother, let him die the death.'For Moses said, 'Honor your father and your mother;' and, 'He who speaks evil of father or mother, let him be put to death.'For Moses said, Give honour to your father and mother, and, He who says evil of father or mother, let him have the punishment of death:
Mark 7:11But *you* say, `If a man says to his father or mother, It is a Korban (that is, a thing devoted to God), whatever it is, which otherwise you would have received from me 'But you say, 'If a man will tell his father or his mother, "Whatever you might have been profited by me is Corban, that is to say, given to God;"'But you say, If a man says to his father or his mother, That by which you might have had profit from me is Corban, that is to say, Given to God,
Mark 7:12And so you no longer allow him to do anything for his father or mother,and you no longer allow him to do anything for his father or his mother,You no longer let him do anything for his father or his mother;
Mark 7:13thus nullifying God's precept by your tradition which you have handed down. And many things of that kind you do."making void the word of God by your tradition, which you have handed down. You do many things like this."Making the word of God of no effect by your rule, which you have given: and a number of other such things you do.
Mark 7:14Then Jesus called the people to Him again. "Listen to me, all of you," He said, "and understand.He called all the multitude to himself, and said to them, "Hear me, all of you, and understand.And turning to the people again, he said to them, Give ear to me all of you, and let my words be clear to you:
Mark 7:15There is nothing outside a man which entering him can make him unclean; but it is the things which come out of a man that make him unclean."There is nothing from outside of the man, that going into him can defile him; but the things which proceed out of the man are those that defile the man.There is nothing outside the man which, going into him, is able to make him unclean: but the things which come out of the man are those which make the man unclean.
Mark 7:16[]If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear!"[]
Mark 7:17After He had left the crowd and gone indoors, His disciples began to ask Him about this figure of speech.When he had entered into the house from the multitude, his disciples asked him about the parable.And when he had gone into the house away from all the people, his disciples put questions to him about the saying.
Mark 7:18"Have *you* also so little understanding?" He replied; "do you not understand that anything whatever that enters a man from outside cannot make him unclean,He said to them, "Are you so without understanding also? Don't you perceive that whatever goes into the man from outside can't defile him,And he said to them, Have even you so little wisdom? Do you not see that whatever goes into a man from outside is not able to make him unclean,
Mark 7:19because it does not go into his heart, but into his stomach, and passes away ejected from him?" By these words Jesus pronounced all kinds of food clean.because it doesn't go into his heart, but into his belly, and into the latrine, thus making all foods clean?"Because it goes not into the heart but into the stomach, and goes out with the waste? He said this, making all food clean.
Mark 7:20"What comes out of a man," He added, "that it is which makes him unclean.He said, "That which proceeds out of the man, that defiles the man.And he said, That which comes out of the man, that makes the man unclean.
Mark 7:21For from within, out of men's hearts, their evil purposes proceed fornication, theft, murder, adultery,For from within, out of the hearts of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, sexual sins, murders, thefts,Because from inside, from the heart of men, come evil thoughts and unclean pleasures,
Mark 7:22covetousness, wickedness, deceit, licentiousness, envy, reviling, pride, reckless folly:covetings, wickedness, deceit, lustful desires, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, and foolishness.The taking of goods and of life, broken faith between husband and wife, the desire of wealth, wrongdoing, deceit, sins of the flesh, an evil eye, angry words, pride, foolish acts:
Mark 7:23all these wicked things come out from within and make a man unclean."All these evil things proceed from within, and defile the man."All these evil things come from inside, and make the man unclean.
Mark 7:24Then He rose and left that place and went into the neighbourhood of Tyre and Sidon. Here He entered a house and wished no one to know it, but He could not escape observation.From there he arose, and went away into the borders of Tyre and Sidon. He entered into a house, and wanted no one to know it, but he couldn't escape detection.And he went away from there to the country of Tyre and Sidon. And he went into a house, desiring that no man might have knowledge of it: and he was not able to keep it secret.
Mark 7:25Forthwith a woman whose little daughter was possessed by a foul spirit heard of Him, and came and flung herself at His feet.For a woman, whose little daughter had an unclean spirit, having heard of him, came and fell down at his feet.But a woman, whose little daughter had an unclean spirit, having had news of him, came straight away and went down at his feet.
Mark 7:26She was a Gentile woman, a Syro-phoenician by nation: and again and again she begged Him to expel the demon from her daughter.Now the woman was a Greek, a Syrophoenician by race. She begged him that he would cast the demon out of her daughter.Now the woman was a Greek, a Syro-phoenician by birth: and she made a request to him that he would send the evil spirit out of her daughter.
Mark 7:27"Let the children first eat all they want," He said; "it is not right to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs."But Jesus said to her, "Let the children be filled first, for it is not appropriate to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs."And he said to her, Let the children first have their food: for it is not right to take the children's bread and give it to the dogs.
Mark 7:28"True, Sir," she replied, "and yet the dogs under the table eat the children's scraps."But she answered him, "Yes, Lord. For even the dogs under the table eat the children's crumbs."But she said to him in answer, Yes, Lord: even the dogs under the table take the bits dropped by the children.
Mark 7:29"For those words of yours, go home," He replied; "the demon has gone out of your daughter."He said to her, "For this saying, go your way. The demon has gone out of your daughter."And he said to her, For this saying go your way; the evil spirit has gone out of your daughter.
Mark 7:30So she went home, and found the child lying on the bed, and the demon gone.She went away to her house, and found the child laying on the bed, with the demon gone out.And she went away to her house, and saw the child on the bed, and the evil spirit gone out.
Mark 7:31Returning from the neighbourhood of Tyre, He came by way of Sidon to the Lake of Galilee, passing through the district of the Ten Towns.Again he departed from the borders of Tyre and Sidon, and came to the sea of Galilee, through the midst of the borders of Decapolis.And again he went out from Tyre, and came through Sidon to the sea of Galilee, through the country of Decapolis.
Mark 7:32Here they brought to Him a deaf man that stammered, on whom they begged Him to lay His hands.They brought to him one who was deaf and had an impediment in his speech. They begged him to lay his hand on him.And they came to him with one who had no power of hearing and had trouble in talking; and they made a request to him to put his hands on him.
Mark 7:33So Jesus taking him aside, apart from the crowd, put His fingers into his ears, and spat, and moistened his tongue;He took him aside from the multitude, privately, and put his fingers into his ears, and he spat, and touched his tongue.And he took him on one side from the people privately, and put his fingers into his ears, and he put water from his mouth on the man's tongue with his finger;
Mark 7:34and looking up to Heaven He sighed, and said to him, "Ephphatha!" (that is, "Open!")Looking up to heaven, he sighed, and said to him, "Ephphatha!" that is, "Be opened!"And looking up to heaven, he took a deep breath, and said to him, Ephphatha, that is, Be open.
Mark 7:35And the man's ears were opened, and his tongue became untied, and he began to speak perfectly.Immediately his ears were opened, and the bond of his tongue was loosed, and he spoke clearly.And his ears became open, and the band of his tongue was made loose, and his words became clear.
Mark 7:36Then Jesus charged them to tell no one; but the more He charged them, all the more did they spread the news far and wide.He charged them that they should tell no one, but the more he charged them, so much the more widely they proclaimed it.And he gave them orders not to give news of it to anyone; but the more he made this request, so much the more they made it public.
Mark 7:37The amazement was extreme. "He succeeds in everything he attempts," they exclaimed; "he even makes deaf men hear and dumb men speak!"They were astonished beyond measure, saying, "He has done all things well. He makes even the deaf hear, and the mute speak!"And they were overcome with wonder, saying, He has done all things well: he even gives back the power of hearing and the power of talking to those who have been without them.
