Matthew 27:1 | When morning came all the High Priests and the Elders of the people consulted together against Jesus to put Him to death; | Now when morning had come, all the chief priests and the elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to put him to death: | Now when it was morning, all the chief priests and those in authority took thought together with the purpose of putting Jesus to death. |
Matthew 27:2 | and binding Him they led Him away and handed Him over to Pilate the Governor. | and they bound him, and led him away, and delivered him up to Pontius Pilate, the governor. | And they put cords on him and took him away, and gave him up to Pilate, the ruler. |
Matthew 27:3 | Then when Judas, who had betrayed Him, saw that He was condemned, smitten with remorse he brought back the thirty shekels to the High Priests and Elders | Then Judas, who betrayed him, when he saw that he was condemned, repented himself, and brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, | Then Judas, who was false to him, seeing that he was to be put to death, in his regret took back the thirty bits of silver to the chief priests and those in authority, |
Matthew 27:4 | and said, "I have sinned, in betraying to death one who is innocent." "What does that matter to us?" they replied; it is your business." | saying, "I have sinned in that I betrayed innocent blood." But they said, "What is that to us? You see to it." | Saying, I have done wrong in giving into your hands an upright man. But they said, What is that to us? it is your business. |
Matthew 27:5 | Flinging the shekels into the Sanctuary he left the place, and went and hanged himself. | He threw down the pieces of silver in the sanctuary, and departed. He went away and hanged himself. | And he put down the silver in the Temple and went out, and put himself to death by hanging. |
Matthew 27:6 | When the High Priests had gathered up the money they said, "It is illegal to put it into the Treasury, because it is the price of blood." | The chief priests took the pieces of silver, and said, "It is not lawful to put them into the treasury, since it is the price of blood." | And the chief priests took the silver and said, It is not right to put it in the Temple store for it is the price of blood. |
Matthew 27:7 | So after consulting together they spent the money in the purchase of the Potter's Field as a burial place for people not belonging to the city; | They took counsel, and bought with them the potter's field, to bury strangers in. | And they made a decision to get with the silver the potter's field, as a place for the dead of other countries. |
Matthew 27:8 | for which reason that piece of ground received the name, which it still bears, of `the Field of Blood.' | Therefore that field was called "The Field of Blood" to this day. | For this cause that field was named, The field of blood, to this day. |
Matthew 27:9 | Then were fulfilled the words spoken by the Prophet Jeremiah, "And I took the thirty shekels, the price of the prized one on whom Israelites had set a price, | Then that which was spoken through Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled, saying, "They took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him who was priced, whom some of the children of Israel did price, | Then came true that which was said by Jeremiah the prophet, And they took the thirty bits of silver, the price of him who was valued by the children of Israel; |
Matthew 27:10 | and gave them for the potter's field, as the Lord directed me." | and they gave them for the potter's field, as the Lord commanded me." | And they gave them for the potter's field, as I had word from the Lord. |
Matthew 27:11 | Meanwhile Jesus was brought before the Governor, and the latter put the question, "Are you the King of the Jews?" "I am their King," He answered. | Now Jesus stood before the governor: and the governor asked him, saying, "Are you the King of the Jews?" Jesus said to him, "So you say." | And Jesus was before the ruler, who put a question to him, Are you the King of the Jews? And Jesus said to him, You say so. |
Matthew 27:12 | When however the High Priests and the Elders kept bringing their charges against Him, He said not a word in reply. | When he was accused by the chief priests and elders, he answered nothing. | But when the chief priests and those in authority made statements against him, he gave no answer. |
Matthew 27:13 | "Do you not hear," asked Pilate, "what a mass of evidence they are bringing against you?" | Then Pilate said to him, "Don't you hear how many things they testify against you?" | Then says Pilate to him, Do you give no attention to what their witnesses say against you? |
Matthew 27:14 | But He made no reply to a single accusation, so that the Governor was greatly astonished. | He gave him no answer, not even one word, so that the governor marveled greatly. | And he gave him no answer, not even a word: so that the ruler was greatly surprised. |
Matthew 27:15 | "Now it was the Governor's custom at the Festival to release some one prisoner, whomsoever the populace desired; | Now at the feast the governor used to release to the multitude one prisoner, whom they wanted. | Now at the feast it was the way for the ruler to let free to the people one prisoner, at their selection. |
Matthew 27:16 | and at this time they had a notorious prisoner called Barabbas. | They had then a notable prisoner, called Barabbas. | And they had then an important prisoner, whose name was Barabbas. |
Matthew 27:17 | So when they were now assembled Pilate appealed to them. "Whom shall I release to you," he said, "Barabbas, or Jesus the so-called Christ?" | When therefore they were gathered together, Pilate said to them, "Whom do you want me to release to you? Barabbas, or Jesus, who is called Christ?" | So when they came together, Pilate said to them, Whom will you have? Barabbas, or Jesus, who is named Christ? |
Matthew 27:18 | For he knew that it was from envious hatred that Jesus had been brought before him. | For he knew that because of envy they had delivered him up. | For he saw that for envy they had given him up. |
Matthew 27:19 | While he was sitting on the tribunal a message came to him from his wife. "Have nothing to do with that innocent man," she said, "for during the night I have suffered terribly in a dream through him." | While he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent to him, saying, "Have nothing to do with that righteous man, for I have suffered many things this day in a dream because of him." | And while he was on the judge's seat, his wife sent to him, saying, Have nothing to do with that upright man, for I have had much trouble this day in a dream because of him. |
Matthew 27:20 | The High Priests, however, and the Elders urged the crowd to ask for Barabbas and to demand the death of Jesus. | Now the chief priests and the elders persuaded the multitudes that they should ask for Barabbas, and destroy Jesus. | Now the chief priests and those in authority got the people to make request for Barabbas, and for Jesus to be put to death. |
Matthew 27:21 | So when the Governor a second time asked them, "Which of the two shall I release to you?" they cried, "Barabbas!" | But the governor answered them, "Which of the two do you want me to release to you?" They said, "Barabbas!" | But the ruler made answer and said to them, Which of the two is it your pleasure that I let go free? And they said, Barabbas. |
Matthew 27:22 | "What then," said Pilate, "shall I do with Jesus, the so-called Christ?" With one voice they shouted, "Let him be crucified!" | Pilate said to them, "What then will I do to Jesus, who is called Christ?" They all said to him, "Let him be crucified!" | Pilate says to them, What, then, am I to do with Jesus, who is named Christ? They all say, Let him be put to death on the cross. |
Matthew 27:23 | "Why, what crime has he committed?" asked Pilate. But they kept on furiously shouting, "Let him be crucified!" | But the governor said, "Why? What evil has he done?" But they cried out exceedingly, saying, "Let him be crucified!" | And he said, Why, what evil has he done? But they gave loud cries, saying, To the cross with him! |
Matthew 27:24 | So when he saw that he could gain nothing, but that on the contrary there was a riot threatening, he called for water and washed his hands in sight of them all, saying, "I am not responsible for this murder: you must answer for it." | So when Pilate saw that nothing was gained, but rather that a disturbance was starting, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, "I am innocent of the blood of this righteous person. You see to it." | So when Pilate saw that he was able to do nothing, but that trouble was working up, he took water and, washing his hands before the people, said, The blood of this upright man is not on my hands: you are responsible. |
Matthew 27:25 | "His blood," replied all the people, "be on us and on our children!" | All the people answered, "May his blood be on us, and on our children!" | And all the people made answer and said, Let his blood be on us, and on our children. |
Matthew 27:26 | Then he released Barabbas to them, but Jesus he ordered to be scourged, and gave Him up to be crucified. | Then he released to them Barabbas, but Jesus he flogged and delivered to be crucified. | Then he let Barabbas go free: but after having Jesus whipped, he gave him up to be put to death on the cross. |
Matthew 27:27 | Then the Governor's soldiers took Jesus into the Praetorium, and called together the whole battalion to make sport of Him. | Then the governor's soldiers took Jesus into the Praetorium, and gathered to him the whole cohort. | Then the ruler's armed men took Jesus into the open square, and got all their band together. |
Matthew 27:28 | Stripping off His garments, they put on Him a general's short crimson cloak. | They stripped him, and put a scarlet robe on him. | And they took off his clothing, and put on him a red robe. |
Matthew 27:29 | They twisted a wreath of thorny twigs and put it on His head, and they put a sceptre of cane in His right hand, and kneeling to Him they shouted in mockery, "Long live the King of the Jews!" | They braided a crown of thorns and put it on his head, and a reed in his right hand; and they kneeled down before him, and mocked him, saying, "Hail, King of the Jews!" | And they made a crown of thorns and put it on his head, and put a rod in his right hand, and they went down on their knees before him, and made sport of him, saying, Long life to the King of the Jews. |
Matthew 27:30 | Then they spat upon Him, and taking the cane they repeatedly struck Him on the head with it. | They spat on him, and took the reed and struck him on the head. | And they put shame on him, and gave him blows on the head with the rod. |
Matthew 27:31 | At last, having finished their sport, they took off the cloak, clothed Him again in His own garments, and led Him away for crucifixion. | When they had mocked him, they took the robe off from him, and put his clothes on him, and led him away to crucify him. | And when they had made sport of him, they took the robe off him, and put his clothing on him, and took him away to put him on the cross. |
Matthew 27:32 | Going out they met a Cyrenaean named Simon; whom they compelled to carry His cross, | As they came out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name, and they compelled him to go with them, that he might carry his cross. | And while they were coming out, they saw a man of Cyrene, Simon by name, and they made him go with them, so that he might take up his cross. |
Matthew 27:33 | and so they came to a place called Golgotha, which means `Skull-ground.' | They came to a place called "Golgotha," that is to say, "The place of a skull." | And when they came to the place named Golgotha, that is to say, Dead Man's Head, |
Matthew 27:34 | Here they gave Him a mixture of wine and gall to drink, but having tasted it He refused to drink it. | They gave him sour wine to drink mixed with gall. When he had tasted it, he would not drink. | They gave him wine mixed with bitter drink: and after tasting it, he took no more. |
Matthew 27:35 | After crucifying Him, they divided His garments among them by lot, | When they had crucified him, they divided his clothing among them, casting lots, | And when they had put him on the cross, they made division of his clothing among them by the decision of chance. |
Matthew 27:36 | and sat down there on guard. | and they sat and watched him there. | And they were seated there watching him. |
Matthew 27:37 | Over His head they placed a written statement of the charge against Him: THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS. | They set up over his head his accusation written, "THIS IS JESUS, THE KING OF THE JEWS." | And they put up over his head the statement of his crime in writing, THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS. |
Matthew 27:38 | At the same time two robbers were crucified with Him, one at His right hand and the other at His left. | Then there were two robbers crucified with him, one on his right hand and one on the left. | Then two thieves were put on crosses with him, one on the right and one on the left. |
Matthew 27:39 | And the passers-by reviled Him. They shook their heads at Him | Those who passed by blasphemed him, wagging their heads, | And those who went by said bitter words to him, shaking their heads and saying, |
Matthew 27:40 | and said, "You who would pull down the Sanctuary and build a new one within three days, save yourself. If you are God's Son, come down from the cross." | and saying, "You who destroy the temple, and build it in three days, save yourself! If you are the Son of God, come down from the cross!" | You who would give the Temple to destruction and put it up again in three days, get yourself free: if you are the Son of God, come down from the cross. |
Matthew 27:41 | In like manner the High Priests also, together with the Scribes and the Elders, taunted Him. | Likewise the chief priests also mocking, with the scribes, the Pharisees, and the elders, said, | In the same way, the chief priests, making sport of him, with the scribes and those in authority, said, |
Matthew 27:42 | "He saved others," they said, "himself he cannot save! He is the King of Israel! Let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe in him. | "He saved others, but he can't save himself. If he is the King of Israel, let him come down from the cross now, and we will believe in him. | A saviour of others, he has no salvation for himself. If he is the King of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will have faith in him. |
Matthew 27:43 | His trust is in God: let God deliver him now, if He will have him; for he said, `I am God's Son.'" | He trusts in God. Let him deliver him now, if he wants him; for he said, 'I am the Son of God.'" | He put his faith in God; let God be his saviour now, if he will have him; for he said, I am the Son of God. |
Matthew 27:44 | Insults of the same kind were heaped on Him even by the robbers who were being crucified with Him. | The robbers also who were crucified with him cast on him the same reproach. | And the thieves who were on the crosses said evil words to him. |
Matthew 27:45 | Now from noon until three o'clock in the afternoon there was darkness over the whole land; | Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land until the ninth hour. | Now from the sixth hour it was dark over all the land till the ninth hour. |

That is, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" | And about the ninth hour Jesus gave a loud cry, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is, My God, my God, why are you turned away from me? |
Matthew 27:47 | "The man is calling for Elijah," said some of the bystanders. | Some of them who stood there, when they heard it, said, "This man calls Elijah." | And some of those who were near by, hearing it, said, This man is crying to Elijah. |
Matthew 27:48 | One of them ran forthwith, and filling a sponge with sour wine put it on the end of a cane and offered it Him to drink; | Immediately one of them ran, and took a sponge, and filled it with vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave him a drink. | And straight away one of them went quickly, and took a sponge, and made it full of bitter wine, and put it on a rod and gave him drink. |
Matthew 27:49 | while the rest said, "Let us see whether Elijah is coming to deliver him." | The rest said, "Let him be. Let's see whether Elijah comes to save him." | And the rest said, Let him be; let us see if Elijah will come to his help. |
Matthew 27:50 | But Jesus uttered another loud cry and then yielded up His spirit. | Jesus cried again with a loud voice, and yielded up his spirit. | And Jesus gave another loud cry, and gave up his spirit. |
Matthew 27:51 | Immediately the curtain of the Sanctuary was torn in two from top to bottom: the earth quaked; the rocks split; | Behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from the top to the bottom. The earth quaked and the rocks were split. | And the curtain of the Temple was parted in two from end to end; and there was an earth-shock; and the rocks were broken; |
Matthew 27:52 | the tombs opened; and many of God's people who were asleep in death awoke. | The tombs were opened, and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised; | And the resting-places of the dead came open; and the bodies of a number of sleeping saints came to life; |
Matthew 27:53 | And coming out of their tombs after Christ's resurrection they entered the holy city and showed themselves to many. | and coming forth out of the tombs after his resurrection, they entered into the holy city and appeared to many. | And coming out of their resting-places, after he had come again from the dead, they went into the holy town and were seen by a number of people. |
Matthew 27:54 | As for the Captain and the soldiers who were with Him keeping guard over Jesus, when they witnessed the earthquake and the other occurrences they were filled with terror, and exclaimed, "Assuredly he was God's Son." | Now the centurion, and those who were with him watching Jesus, when they saw the earthquake, and the things that were done, feared exceedingly, saying, "Truly this was the Son of God." | Now the captain and those who were with him watching Jesus, when they saw the earth-shock and the things which were done, were in great fear and said, Truly this was a son of God. |
Matthew 27:55 | And there were a number of women there looking on from a distance, who had followed Jesus from Galilee ministering to His necessities; | Many women were there watching from afar, who had followed Jesus from Galilee, serving him, | And a number of women were there, watching from a distance, who had come with Jesus from Galilee, waiting on his needs. |
Matthew 27:56 | among them being Mary of Magdala, Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of the sons of Zabdi. | among whom was Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of the sons of Zebedee. | Among whom was Mary Magdalene, and Mary, the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of the sons of Zebedee. |
Matthew 27:57 | Towards sunset there came a wealthy inhabitant of Arimathaea, named Joseph, who himself also had become a disciple of Jesus. | When evening had come, there came a rich man from Arimathaea, named Joseph, who also himself was Jesus' disciple. | And in the evening, there came a man of wealth from Arimathaea, Joseph by name, who was a disciple of Jesus: |
Matthew 27:58 | He went to Pilate and begged to have the body of Jesus, and Pilate ordered it to be given to him. | This man went to Pilate, and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded the body to be given up. | This man went in to Pilate, and made a request for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate gave orders for it to be given to him. |
Matthew 27:59 | So Joseph took the body and wrapped it in a clean sheet of fine linen. | Joseph took the body, and wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, | And Joseph took the body, folding it in clean linen, |
Matthew 27:60 | He then laid it in his own new tomb which he had hewn in the solid rock, and after rolling a great stone against the door of the tomb he went home. | and laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock, and he rolled a great stone to the door of the tomb, and departed. | And put it in the resting-place which had been cut out of the rock for himself; and after rolling a great stone to the door of it he went away. |
Matthew 27:61 | Mary of Magdala and the other Mary were both present there, sitting opposite to the sepulchre. | Mary Magdalene was there, and the other Mary, sitting opposite the tomb. | And Mary Magdalene was there, and the other Mary, seated by the place of the dead. |
Matthew 27:62 | On the next day, the day after the Preparation, the High Priests and the Pharisees came in a body to Pilate. | Now on the next day, which is the day after the Preparation, the chief priests and the Pharisees were gathered together to Pilate, | Now on the day after the getting ready of the Passover, the chief priests and Pharisees came together to Pilate, |
Matthew 27:63 | "Sir," they said, "we recollect that during his lifetime that impostor pretended that after two days he was to rise to life again. | saying, "Sir, we remember what that deceiver said while he was still alive: 'After three days I will rise again.' | Saying, Sir, we have in mind how that false man said, while he was still living, After three days I will come again from the dead. |
Matthew 27:64 | So give orders for the sepulchre to be securely guarded till the third day, for fear his disciples should come by night and steal the body, and then tell the people that he has come back to life; and so the last imposture will be more serious than the first." | Command therefore that the tomb be made secure until the third day, lest perhaps his disciples come at night and steal him away, and tell the people, 'He is risen from the dead;' and the last deception will be worse than the first." | Give orders, then, that the place where his body is may be made safe till the third day, for fear that his disciples come and take him away secretly and say to the people, He has come back from the dead: and the last error will be worse than the first. |
Matthew 27:65 | "You can have a guard," said Pilate: "go and make all safe, as best you can." | Pilate said to them, "You have a guard. Go, make it as secure as you can." | Pilate said to them, You have watchmen; go and make it as safe as you are able. |
Matthew 27:66 | So they went and made the sepulchre secure, sealing the stone besides setting the guard. | So they went, and made the tomb secure, sealing the stone, the guard being with them. | So they went, and made safe the place where his body was, putting a stamp on the stone, and the watchmen were with them. |
