John 11:1Now a certain man, named Lazarus, of Bethany, was lying ill Bethany being the village of Mary and her sister Martha.Now a certain man was sick, Lazarus of Bethany, of the village of Mary and her sister, Martha.Now there was a certain [man] sick, Lazarus of Bethany, of the village of Mary and Martha her sister.
John 11:2(It was the Mary who poured the perfume over the Lord and wiped His feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was ill.)It was that Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother, Lazarus, was sick.It was [the] Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.
John 11:3So the sisters sent to Him to say, "Master, he whom you hold dear is ill."The sisters therefore sent to him, saying, "Lord, behold, he for whom you have great affection is sick."The sisters therefore sent to him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick.
John 11:4Jesus received the message and said, "This illness is not to end in death, but is to promote the glory of God, in order that the Son of God may be glorified by it."But when Jesus heard it, he said, "This sickness is not to death, but for the glory of God, that God's Son may be glorified by it."But when Jesus heard [it], he said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified by it.
John 11:5Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus.Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus.Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus.
John 11:6When, however, He heard that Lazarus was ill, He still remained two days in that same place.When therefore he heard that he was sick, he stayed at that time two days in the place where he was.When therefore he heard, He is sick, he remained two days then in the place where he was.
John 11:7Then, after that, He said to the disciples, "Let us return to Judaea."Then after this he said to the disciples, "Let's go into Judea again."Then after this he says to his disciples, Let us go into Judaea again.
John 11:8"Rabbi," exclaimed the disciples, "the Jews have just been trying to stone you, and do you think of going back there again?"The disciples told him, "Rabbi, the Jews were just trying to stone you, and are you going there again?"The disciples say to him, Rabbi, [even but] now the Jews sought to stone thee, and goest thou thither again?
John 11:9"Are there not twelve hours in the day?" replied Jesus. "If any one walks in the daytime, he does not stumble because he sees the light of this world.Jesus answered, "Aren't there twelve hours of daylight? If a man walks in the day, he doesn't stumble, because he sees the light of this world.Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any one walk in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world;
John 11:10But if a man walks by night, he does stumble, because the light is not in him."But if a man walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light isn't in him."but if any one walk in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him.
John 11:11He said this, and afterwards He added, "Our friend Lazarus is sleeping, but I will go and wake him."He said these things, and after that, he said to them, "Our friend, Lazarus, has fallen asleep, but I am going so that I may awake him out of sleep."These things said he; and after this he says to them, Lazarus, our friend, is fallen asleep, but I go that I may awake him out of sleep.
John 11:12"Master," said the disciples, "if he is asleep he will recover."The disciples therefore said to him, "Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover."The disciples therefore said to him, Lord, if he be fallen asleep, he will get well.
John 11:13Now Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought He referred to the rest taken in ordinary sleep.Now Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that he spoke of taking rest in sleep.But Jesus spoke of his death, but *they* thought that he spoke of the rest of sleep.
John 11:14So then He told them plainly,So Jesus said to them plainly then, "Lazarus is dead.Jesus therefore then said to them plainly, Lazarus has died.
John 11:15"Lazarus is dead; and for your sakes I am glad I was not there, in order that you may believe. But let us go to him."I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, so that you may believe. Nevertheless, let's go to him."And I rejoice on your account that I was not there, in order that ye may believe. But let us go to him.
John 11:16"Let us go also," Thomas, the Twin, said to his fellow disciples, "that we may die with him."Thomas therefore, who is called Didymus, said to his fellow disciples, "Let's go also, that we may die with him."Thomas therefore, called Didymus, said to his fellow disciples, Let *us* also go, that we may die with him.
John 11:17On His arrival Jesus found that Lazarus had already been three days in the tomb.So when Jesus came, he found that he had been in the tomb four days already.Jesus therefore [on] arriving found him to have been four days already in the tomb.
John 11:18Bethany was near Jerusalem, the distance being a little less than two miles;Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, about fifteen stadia away.Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, about fifteen stadia off,
John 11:19and a considerable number of the Jews were with Martha and Mary, having come to express sympathy with them on the death of their brother.Many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary, to console them concerning their brother.and many of the Jews came to Martha and Mary, that they might console them concerning their brother.
John 11:20Martha, however, as soon as she heard the tidings, "Jesus is coming," went to meet Him; but Mary remained sitting in the house.Therefore Martha, when she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met him, but Mary stayed in the house.Martha then, when she heard Jesus is coming, went to meet him; but Mary sat in the house.
John 11:21So Martha came and spoke to Jesus. "Master, if you had been here," she said, "my brother would not have died.Therefore Martha said to Jesus, "Lord, if you would have been here, my brother wouldn't have died.Martha therefore said to Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died;
John 11:22And even now I know that whatever you ask God for, God will give you."Even now I know that, whatever you ask of God, God will give you."but even now I know, that whatsoever thou shalt ask of God, God will give thee.
John 11:23"Your brother shall rise again," replied Jesus.Jesus said to her, "Your brother will rise again."Jesus says to her, Thy brother shall rise again.
John 11:24"I know," said Martha, "that he will rise again at the resurrection, on the last day."Martha said to him, "I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day."Martha says to him, I know that he will rise again in the resurrection in the last day.
John 11:25"I am the Resurrection and the Life," said Jesus; "he who believes in me, even if he has died, he shall live;Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me, though he die, yet will he live.Jesus said to her, I am the resurrection and the life: he that believes on me, though he have died, shall live;
John 11:26and every one who is living and is a believer in me shall never, never die. Do you believe this?"Whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?"and every one who lives and believes on me shall never die. Believest thou this?
John 11:27"Yes, Master," she replied; "I thoroughly believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who was to come into the world."She said to him, "Yes, Lord. I have come to believe that you are the Christ, God's Son, he who comes into the world."She says to him, Yea, Lord; I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, who should come into the world.
John 11:28After saying this, she went and called her sister Mary privately, telling her, "The Rabbi is here and is asking for you."When she had said this, she went away, and called Mary, her sister, secretly, saying, "The Teacher is here, and is calling you."And having said this, she went away and called her sister Mary secretly, saying, The teacher is come and calls thee.
John 11:29So she, on hearing that, rose up quickly to go to Him.She, when she heard this, arose quickly, and went to him.She, when she heard [that], rises up quickly and comes to him.
John 11:30Now Jesus was not yet come into the village, but was still at the place where Martha had met Him.Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was in the place where Martha met him.Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was in the place where Martha came to meet him.
John 11:31So the Jews who were with Mary in the house sympathizing with her, when they saw that she had risen hastily and had gone out, followed her, supposing that she was going to the tomb to weep aloud there.Then the Jews who were with her in the house, and were consoling her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up quickly and went out, followed her, saying, "She is going to the tomb to weep there."The Jews therefore who were with her in the house and consoling her, seeing Mary that she rose up quickly and went out, followed her, saying, She goes to the tomb, that she may weep there.
John 11:32Mary then, when she came to Jesus and saw Him, fell at His feet and exclaimed, "Master, if you had been here, my brother would not have died."Mary therefore, when she came to where Jesus was, and saw him, fell down at his feet, saying to him, "Lord, if you would have been here, my brother wouldn't have died."Mary therefore, when she came where Jesus was, seeing him, fell at his feet, saying to him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.
John 11:33Seeing her weeping aloud, and the Jews in like manner weeping who had come with her, Jesus, curbing the strong emotion of His spirit,When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews weeping who came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled,Jesus therefore, when he saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her weeping, was deeply moved in spirit, and was troubled,
John 11:34though deeply troubled, asked them, "Where have you laid him?" "Master, come and see," was their reply.and said, "Where have you laid him?" They told him, "Lord, come and see."and said, Where have ye put him? They say to him, Lord, come and see.
John 11:35Jesus wept.Jesus wept.Jesus wept.
John 11:36"See how dear he held him," said the Jews.The Jews therefore said, "See how much affection he had for him!"The Jews therefore said, Behold how he loved him!
John 11:37But others of them asked, "Was this man who opened the blind man's eyes unable to prevent this man from dying?"Some of them said, "Couldn't this man, who opened the eyes of him who was blind, have also caused that this man wouldn't die?"And some of them said, Could not this [man], who has opened the eyes of the blind [man], have caused that this [man] also should not have died?
John 11:38Jesus, however, again restraining His strong feeling, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone had been laid against the mouth of it.Jesus therefore, again groaning in himself, came to the tomb. Now it was a cave, and a stone lay against it.Jesus therefore, again deeply moved in himself, comes to the tomb. Now it was a cave, and a stone lay upon it.
John 11:39"Take away the stone," said Jesus. Martha, the sister of the dead man, exclaimed, "Master, by this time there is a foul smell; for it is three days since he died."Jesus said, "Take away the stone." Martha, the sister of him who was dead, said to him, "Lord, by this time there is a stench, for he has been dead four days."Jesus says, Take away the stone. Martha, the sister of the dead, says to him, Lord, he stinks already, for he is four days [there].
John 11:40"Did I not promise you," replied Jesus, "that if you believe, you shall see the glory of God?"Jesus said to her, "Didn't I tell you that if you believed, you would see God's glory?"Jesus says to her, Did I not say to thee, that if thou shouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God?
John 11:41So they removed the stone. Then Jesus lifted up His eyes and said, "Father, I thank Thee that Thou hast heard me.So they took away the stone from the place where the dead man was lying. Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, "Father, I thank you that you listened to me.They took therefore the stone away. And Jesus lifted up his eyes on high and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me;
John 11:42I know that Thou always hearest me; but for the sake of the crowd standing round I have said this that they may believe that Thou didst send me."I know that you always listen to me, but because of the multitude that stands around I said this, that they may believe that you sent me."but I knew that thou always hearest me; but on account of the crowd who stand around I have said [it], that they may believe that thou hast sent me.
John 11:43After speaking thus, He called out in a loud voice, "Lazarus, come out."When he had said this, he cried with a loud voice, "Lazarus, come out!"And having said this, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth.
John 11:44The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped in cloths, and his face wrapped round with a towel. "Untie him," said Jesus, "and let him go free."He who was dead came out, bound hand and foot with wrappings, and his face was wrapped around with a cloth. Jesus said to them, "Free him, and let him go."And the dead came forth, bound feet and hands with graveclothes, and his face was bound round with a handkerchief. Jesus says to them, Loose him and let him go.
John 11:45Thereupon a considerable number of the Jews namely those who had come to Mary and had witnessed His deeds became believers in Him;Therefore many of the Jews, who came to Mary and saw that which Jesus did, believed in him.Many therefore of the Jews who came to Mary and saw what he had done, believed on him;
John 11:46though some of them went off to the Pharisees and told them what He had done.But some of them went away to the Pharisees, and told them the things which Jesus had done.but some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done.
John 11:47Therefore the High Priests and the Pharisees held a meeting of the Sanhedrin. "What steps are we taking?" they asked one another; "for this man is performing a great number of miracles.The chief priests therefore and the Pharisees gathered a council, and said, "What are we doing? For this man does many signs.The chief priests, therefore, and the Pharisees gathered a council, and said, What do we? for this man does many signs.
John 11:48If we leave him alone in this way, everybody will believe in him, and the Romans will come and blot out both our city and our nation."If we leave him alone like this, everyone will believe in him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation."If we let him thus alone, all will believe on him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation.
John 11:49But one of them, named Caiaphas, being High Priest that year, said, "You know nothing about it.But a certain one of them, Caiaphas, being high priest that year, said to them, "You know nothing at all,But a certain one of them, Caiaphas, being high priest that year, said to them, Ye know nothing
John 11:50You do not reflect that it is to your interest that one man should die for the people rather than the whole nation perish."nor do you take account that it is advantageous for us that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation not perish."nor consider that it is profitable for you that one man die for the people, and not that the whole nation perish.
John 11:51It was not as a mere man that he thus spoke. But being High Priest that year he was inspired to declare that Jesus was to die for the nation,Now he didn't say this of himself, but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation,But this he did not say of himself; but, being high priest that year, prophesied that Jesus was going to die for the nation;
John 11:52and not for the nation only, but in order to unite into one body all the far-scattered children of God.and not for the nation only, but that he might also gather together into one the children of God who are scattered abroad.and not for the nation only, but that he should also gather together into one the children of God who were scattered abroad.
John 11:53So from that day forward they planned and schemed in order to put Him to death.So from that day forth they took counsel that they might put him to death.From that day therefore they took counsel that they might kill him.
John 11:54Therefore Jesus no longer went about openly among the Jews, but He left that neighbourhood and went into the district near the Desert, to a town called Ephraim, and remained there with the disciples.Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews, but departed from there into the country near the wilderness, into a city called Ephraim. He stayed there with his disciples.Jesus therefore walked no longer openly among the Jews, but went away thence into the country near the desert, to a city called Ephraim, and there he sojourned with the disciples.
John 11:55The Jewish Passover was coming near, and many from that district went up to Jerusalem before the Passover, to purify themselves.Now the Passover of the Jews was at hand. Many went up to Jerusalem out of the country before the Passover, to purify themselves.But the passover of the Jews was near, and many went up to Jerusalem out of the country before the passover, that they might purify themselves.
John 11:56They therefore looked out for Jesus, and asked one another as they stood in the Temple, "What do you think? will he come to the Festival at all?"Then they sought for Jesus and spoke one with another, as they stood in the temple, "What do you think? Isn't he coming to the feast?"They sought therefore Jesus, and said among themselves, standing in the temple, What do ye think? that he will not come to the feast?
John 11:57Now the High Priests and the Pharisees had issued orders that if any one knew where He was, he should give information, so that they might arrest Him.Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had commanded that if anyone knew where he was, he should report it, that they might seize him.Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given commandment that if any one knew where he was, he should make it known, that they might take him.
