Mark 7:1Then the Pharisees, with certain Scribes who had come from Jerusalem, came to Him in a body. Then the Pharisees, and some of the scribes gathered together to him, having come from Jerusalem. And there assembled together unto him the Pharisees and some of the scribes, coming from Jerusalem.
Mark 7:2They had noticed that some of His disciples were eating their food with `unclean' (that is to say, unwashed) hands. Now when they saw some of his disciples eating bread with defiled, that is, unwashed, hands, they found fault. And when they had seen some of his disciples eat bread with common, that is, with unwashed hands, they found fault.
Mark 7:3(For the Pharisees and all the Jews being, as they are, zealous for the traditions of the Elders never eat without first carefully washing their hands,(For the Pharisees, and all the Jews, don't eat unless they wash their hands and forearms, holding to the tradition of the elders. For the Pharisees, and all the Jews eat not without often washing their hands, holding the tradition of the ancients:
Mark 7:4and when they come from market they will not eat without bathing first; and they have a good many other customs which they have received traditionally and cling to, such as the rinsing of cups and pots and of bronze utensils, and the washing of beds.)They don't eat when they come from the marketplace, unless they bathe themselves, and there are many other things, which they have received to hold to: washings of cups, pitchers, bronze vessels, and couches.)And when they come from the market, unless they be washed, they eat not: and many other things there are that have been delivered to them to observe, the washings of cups and of pots, and of brazen vessels, and of beds.
Mark 7:5So the Pharisees and Scribes put the question to Him: "Why do your disciples transgress the traditions of the Elders, and eat their food with unclean hands?"The Pharisees and the scribes asked him, "Why don't your disciples walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat their bread with unwashed hands?"And the Pharisees and scribes asked him: Why do not thy disciples walk according to the tradition of the ancients, but they eat bread with common hands?
Mark 7:6"Rightly did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites," He replied; "as it is written, "`This People honour Me with their lips, while their hearts are far away from Me:He answered them, "Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written, 'This people honors me with their lips, But their heart is far from me.But he answering, said to them: Well did Isaias prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written: This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me.
Mark 7:7But idle is their devotion while they lay down precepts which are mere human rules.'But in vain do they worship me, Teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.'And in vain to they worship me, teaching doctrines and precepts of men.
Mark 7:8"You neglect God's Commandment: you hold fast to men's traditions.""For you set aside the commandment of God, and hold tightly to the tradition of men the washing of pitchers and cups, and you do many other such things."For leaving the commandment of God, you hold the tradition of men, the washing of pots and of cups: and many other things you do like to these.
Mark 7:9"Praiseworthy indeed!" He added, "to set at nought God's Commandment in order to observe your own traditions! He said to them, "Full well do you reject the commandment of God, that you may keep your tradition. And he said to them: Well do you make void the commandment of God, that you may keep your own tradition.
Mark 7:10For Moses said, `Honour thy father and thy mother' and again, `He who curses father or mother, let him die the death.'For Moses said, 'Honor your father and your mother;' and, 'He who speaks evil of father or mother, let him be put to death.'For Moses said: Honor thy father and thy mother; and He that shall curse father or mother, dying let him die.
Mark 7:11But *you* say, `If a man says to his father or mother, It is a Korban (that is, a thing devoted to God), whatever it is, which otherwise you would have received from me 'But you say, 'If a man will tell his father or his mother, "Whatever you might have been profited by me is Corban, that is to say, given to God;"'But you say: If a man shall say to his father or mother, Corban, (which is a gift,) whatsoever is from me, shall profit thee.
Mark 7:12And so you no longer allow him to do anything for his father or mother, and you no longer allow him to do anything for his father or his mother,And further you suffer him not to do any thing for his father or mother,
Mark 7:13thus nullifying God's precept by your tradition which you have handed down. And many things of that kind you do."making void the word of God by your tradition, which you have handed down. You do many things like this."Making void the word of God by your own tradition, which you have given forth. And many other such like things you do.
Mark 7:14Then Jesus called the people to Him again. "Listen to me, all of you," He said, "and understand. He called all the multitude to himself, and said to them, "Hear me, all of you, and understand. And calling again the multitude unto him, he said to them: Hear ye me all, and understand.
Mark 7:15There is nothing outside a man which entering him can make him unclean; but it is the things which come out of a man that make him unclean."There is nothing from outside of the man, that going into him can defile him; but the things which proceed out of the man are those that defile the man. There is nothing from without a man that entering into him, can defile him. But the things which come from a man, those are they that defile a man.
Mark 7:16[]If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear!"If any man have ears to hear, let him hear.
Mark 7:17After He had left the crowd and gone indoors, His disciples began to ask Him about this figure of speech. When he had entered into the house from the multitude, his disciples asked him about the parable. And when he was come into the house from the multitude, his disciples asked him the parable.
Mark 7:18"Have *you* also so little understanding?" He replied; "do you not understand that anything whatever that enters a man from outside cannot make him unclean,He said to them, "Are you so without understanding also? Don't you perceive that whatever goes into the man from outside can't defile him,And he saith to them: So are you also without knowledge? understand you not that every thing from without, entering into a man cannot defile him:
Mark 7:19because it does not go into his heart, but into his stomach, and passes away ejected from him?" By these words Jesus pronounced all kinds of food clean.because it doesn't go into his heart, but into his belly, and into the latrine, thus making all foods clean?"Because it entereth not into his heart, but goeth into the belly, and goeth out into the privy, purging all meats?
Mark 7:20"What comes out of a man," He added, "that it is which makes him unclean. He said, "That which proceeds out of the man, that defiles the man.But he said that the things which come out from a man, they defile a man.
Mark 7:21For from within, out of men's hearts, their evil purposes proceed fornication, theft, murder, adultery,For from within, out of the hearts of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, sexual sins, murders, thefts,For from within out of the heart of men proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders,
Mark 7:22covetousness, wickedness, deceit, licentiousness, envy, reviling, pride, reckless folly:covetings, wickedness, deceit, lustful desires, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, and foolishness.Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness.
Mark 7:23all these wicked things come out from within and make a man unclean."All these evil things proceed from within, and defile the man."All these evil things come from within, and defile a man.
Mark 7:24Then He rose and left that place and went into the neighbourhood of Tyre and Sidon. Here He entered a house and wished no one to know it, but He could not escape observation. From there he arose, and went away into the borders of Tyre and Sidon. He entered into a house, and wanted no one to know it, but he couldn't escape detection. And rising from thence he went into the coasts of Tyre and Sidon: and entering into a house, he would that no man should know it, and he could not be hid.
Mark 7:25Forthwith a woman whose little daughter was possessed by a foul spirit heard of Him, and came and flung herself at His feet. For a woman, whose little daughter had an unclean spirit, having heard of him, came and fell down at his feet. For a woman as soon as she heard of him, whose daughter had an unclean spirit, came in and fell down at his feet.
Mark 7:26She was a Gentile woman, a Syro-phoenician by nation: and again and again she begged Him to expel the demon from her daughter. Now the woman was a Greek, a Syrophoenician by race. She begged him that he would cast the demon out of her daughter. For the woman was a Gentile, a Syrophenician born. And she besought him that he would cast forth the devil out of her daughter.
Mark 7:27"Let the children first eat all they want," He said; "it is not right to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs."But Jesus said to her, "Let the children be filled first, for it is not appropriate to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs."Who said to her: Suffer first the children to be filled: for it is not good to take the bread of the children, and cast it to the dogs.
Mark 7:28"True, Sir," she replied, "and yet the dogs under the table eat the children's scraps."But she answered him, "Yes, Lord. For even the dogs under the table eat the children's crumbs."But she answered and said to him: Yea, Lord; for the whelps also eat under the table of the crumbs of the children.
Mark 7:29"For those words of yours, go home," He replied; "the demon has gone out of your daughter."He said to her, "For this saying, go your way. The demon has gone out of your daughter."And he said to her: For this saying go thy way, the devil is gone out of thy daughter.
Mark 7:30So she went home, and found the child lying on the bed, and the demon gone. She went away to her house, and found the child laying on the bed, with the demon gone out.And when she was come into her house, she found the girl lying upon the bed, and that the devil was gone out.
Mark 7:31Returning from the neighbourhood of Tyre, He came by way of Sidon to the Lake of Galilee, passing through the district of the Ten Towns.Again he departed from the borders of Tyre and Sidon, and came to the sea of Galilee, through the midst of the borders of Decapolis. And again going out of the coasts of Tyre, he came by Sidon to the sea of Galilee, through the midst of the coasts of Decapolis.
Mark 7:32Here they brought to Him a deaf man that stammered, on whom they begged Him to lay His hands. They brought to him one who was deaf and had an impediment in his speech. They begged him to lay his hand on him.And they bring to him one deaf and dumb; and they besought him that he would lay his hand upon him.
Mark 7:33So Jesus taking him aside, apart from the crowd, put His fingers into his ears, and spat, and moistened his tongue; He took him aside from the multitude, privately, and put his fingers into his ears, and he spat, and touched his tongue. And taking him from the multitude apart, he put his fingers into his ears, and spitting, he touched his tongue:
Mark 7:34and looking up to Heaven He sighed, and said to him, "Ephphatha!" (that is, "Open!")Looking up to heaven, he sighed, and said to him, "Ephphatha!" that is, "Be opened!"And looking up to heaven, he groaned, and said to him: Ephpheta, which is, Be thou opened.
Mark 7:35And the man's ears were opened, and his tongue became untied, and he began to speak perfectly.Immediately his ears were opened, and the bond of his tongue was loosed, and he spoke clearly. And immediately his ears were opened, and the string of his tongue was loosed, and he spoke right.
Mark 7:36Then Jesus charged them to tell no one; but the more He charged them, all the more did they spread the news far and wide.He charged them that they should tell no one, but the more he charged them, so much the more widely they proclaimed it.And he charged them that they should tell no man. But the more he charged them, so much the more a great deal did they publish it.
Mark 7:37The amazement was extreme. "He succeeds in everything he attempts," they exclaimed; "he even makes deaf men hear and dumb men speak!"They were astonished beyond measure, saying, "He has done all things well. He makes even the deaf hear, and the mute speak!"And so much the more did they wonder, saying: He hath done all things well; he hath made both the deaf to hear, and the dumb to speak.
