Luke 23:1Then the whole assembly rose and brought Him to Pilate, and began to accuse Him.The whole company of them rose up and brought him before Pilate.And having risen, the whole multitude of them did lead him to Pilate,
Luke 23:2"We have found this man," they said, "an agitator among our nation, forbidding the payment of tribute to Caesar, and claiming to be himself an anointed king."They began to accuse him, saying, "We found this man perverting the nation, forbidding paying taxes to Caesar, and saying that he himself is Christ, a king."and began to accuse him, saying, `This one we found perverting the nation, and forbidding to give tribute to Caesar, saying himself to be Christ a king.`
Luke 23:3Then Pilate asked Him, "You, then, are the King of the Jews?" "It is as you say," He replied.Pilate asked him, "Are you the King of the Jews?" He answered him, "So you say."And Pilate questioned him, saying, `Thou art the king of the Jews?` and he answering him, said, `Thou dost say [it].`
Luke 23:4Pilate said to the High Priests and to the crowd, "I can find no crime in this man."Pilate said to the chief priests and the multitudes, "I find no basis for a charge against this man."And Pilate said unto the chief priests, and the multitude, `I find no fault in this man;`
Luke 23:5But they violently insisted. "He stirs up the people," they said, "throughout all Judaea with His teaching even from Galilee (where He first started) to this city."But they insisted, saying, "He stirs up the people, teaching throughout all Judea, beginning from Galilee even to this place."and they were the more urgent, saying `He doth stir up the people, teaching throughout the whole of Judea having begun from Galilee unto this place.`
Luke 23:6On hearing this, Pilate inquired, "Is this man a Galilaean?"But when Pilate heard Galilee mentioned, he asked if the man was a Galilean.And Pilate having heard of Galilee, questioned if the man is a Galilean,
Luke 23:7And learning that He belonged to Herod's jurisdiction he sent Him to Herod, for he too was in Jerusalem at that time.When he found out that he was in Herod's jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod, who was also in Jerusalem in those days.and having known that he is from the jurisdiction of Herod, he sent him back unto Herod, he being also in Jerusalem in those days.
Luke 23:8To Herod the sight of Jesus was a great gratification, for, for a long time, he had been wanting to see Him, because he had heard so much about Him. He hoped also to see some miracle performed by Him.Now when Herod saw Jesus, he was exceedingly glad, for he had wanted to see him for a long time, because he had heard many things about him. He hoped to see some miracle done by him.And Herod having seen Jesus did rejoice exceedingly, for he was wishing for a long [time] to see him, because of hearing many things about him, and he was hoping some sign to see done by him,
Luke 23:9So he put a number of questions to Him, but Jesus gave him no reply.He questioned him with many words, but he gave no answers.and was questioning him in many words, and he answered him nothing.
Luke 23:10Meanwhile the High Priests and the Scribes were standing there and vehemently accusing Him.The chief priests and the scribes stood, vehemently accusing him.And the chief priests and the scribes stood vehemently accusing him,
Luke 23:11Then, laughing to scorn the claims of Jesus, Herod (and his soldiers with him) made sport of Him, dressed Him in a gorgeous costume, and sent Him back to Pilate.Herod with his soldiers humiliated him and mocked him. Dressing him in luxurious clothing, they sent him back to Pilate.and Herod with his soldiers having set him at nought, and having mocked, having put around him gorgeous apparel, did send him back to Pilate,
Luke 23:12And on that very day Herod and Pilate became friends again, for they had been for some time at enmity.Herod and Pilate became friends with each other that very day, for before that they were enemies with each other.and both Pilate and Herod became friends on that day with one another, for they were before at enmity between themselves.
Luke 23:13Then calling together the High Priests and the Rulers and the people, Pilate said,Pilate called together the chief priests and the rulers and the people,And Pilate having called together the chief priests, and the rulers, and the people,
Luke 23:14"You have brought this man to me on a charge of corrupting the loyalty of the people. But, you see, I have examined him in your presence and have discovered in the man no ground for the accusations which you bring against him.and said to them, "You brought this man to me as one that perverts the people, and see, I have examined him before you, and found no basis for a charge against this man concerning those things of which you accuse him.said unto them, `Ye brought to me this man as perverting the people, and lo, I before you having examined, found in this man no fault in those things ye bring forward against him;
Luke 23:15No, nor does Herod; for he has sent him back to us; and, you see, there is nothing he has done that deserves death.Neither has Herod, for I sent you to him, and see, nothing worthy of death has been done by him.no, nor yet Herod, for I sent you back unto him, and lo, nothing worthy of death is having been done by him;
Luke 23:16I will therefore give him a light punishment and release him."I will therefore chastise him and release him."having chastised, therefore, I will release him,`
Luke 23:17[]Now he had to release one prisoner to them at the feast.for it was necessary for him to release to them one at every feast,
Luke 23:18Then the whole multitude burst out into a shout. "Away with this man," they said, "and release Barabbas to us"But they all cried out together, saying, "Away with this man! Release to us Barabbas!"and they cried out the whole multitude saying, `Away with this one, and release to us Barabbas,`
Luke 23:19Barabbas! who had been lodged in jail for some time in connexion with a riot which had occurred in the city, and for murder.one who was thrown into prison for a certain revolt in the city, and for murder.who had been, because of a certain sedition made in the city, and murder, cast into prison.
Luke 23:20But Pilate once more addressed them, wishing to set Jesus free.Pilate spoke to them again, desiring to release Jesus,Pilate again then wishing to release Jesus called to them,
Luke 23:21They, however, persistently shouted, "Crucify, crucify him!"but they shouted, saying, "Crucify! Crucify him!"but they were calling out, saying, `Crucify, crucify him.`
Luke 23:22A third time he appealed to them: "Why, what crime has the man committed? I have discovered in him nothing that deserves death. I will therefore give him a light punishment and release him."He said to them the third time, "Why? What evil has this man done? I have found no capital crime in him. I will therefore chastise him and release him."And he a third time said unto them, `Why, what evil did he? no cause of death did I find in him; having chastised him, then, I will release [him].`
Luke 23:23But they urgently insisted, demanding with frantic outcries that He should be crucified; and their clamour prevailed.But they were urgent with loud voices, asking that he might be crucified. Their voices and the voices of the chief priests prevailed.And they were pressing with loud voices asking him to be crucified, and their voices, and those of the chief priests, were prevailing,
Luke 23:24So Pilate gave judgement, yielding to their demand.Pilate adjudged that what they asked for should be done.and Pilate gave judgment for their request being done,
Luke 23:25The man who was lying in prison charged with riot and murder and for whom they clamoured he set free, but Jesus he gave up to be dealt with as they desired.He released him who had been thrown into prison for insurrection and murder, for whom they asked, but he delivered Jesus up to their will.and he released him who because of sedition and murder hath been cast into the prison, whom they were asking, and Jesus he gave up to their will.
Luke 23:26As soon as they led Him away, they laid hold on one Simon, a Cyrenaean, who was coming in from the country, and on his shoulders they put the cross, for him to carry it behind Jesus.When they led him away, they grabbed one Simon of Cyrene, coming from the country, and laid on him the cross, to carry it after Jesus.And as they led him away, having taken hold on Simon, a certain Cyrenian, coming from the field, they put on him the cross, to bear [it] behind Jesus.
Luke 23:27A vast crowd of the people also followed Him, and of women who were beating their breasts and wailing for Him.A great multitude of the people followed him, including women who also mourned and lamented him.And there was following him a great multitude of the people, and of women, who also were beating themselves and lamenting him,
Luke 23:28But Jesus turned towards them and said, "Daughters of Jerusalem, weep not for me, but weep for yourselves and for your children.But Jesus, turning to them, said, "Daughters of Jerusalem, don't weep for me, but weep for yourselves and for your children.and Jesus having turned unto them, said, `Daughters of Jerusalem, weep not for me, but for yourselves weep ye, and for your children;
Luke 23:29For a time is coming when they will say, `Blessed are the women who never bore children, and the breasts which have never given nourishment.'For behold, the days are coming in which they will say, 'Blessed are the barren, the wombs that never bore, and the breasts that never nursed.'for, lo, days do come, in which they shall say, Happy the barren, and wombs that did not bare, and paps that did not give suck;
Luke 23:30Then will they begin to say to the mountains, `Fall on us;' and to the hills, `Cover us.'Then will they begin to tell the mountains, 'Fall on us!' and to the hills, 'Cover us.'then they shall begin to say to the mountains, Fall on us, and to the hills, Cover us;
Luke 23:31For if they are doing these things in the case of the green tree, what will be done in that of the dry?"For if they do these things in the green tree, what will be done in the dry?"for, if in the green tree they do these things in the dry what may happen?`
Luke 23:32They brought also two others, criminals, to put them to death with Him.There were also others, two criminals, led with him to be put to death.And there were also others two evil-doers with him, to be put to death;
Luke 23:33When they reached the place called `The Skull,' there they nailed Him to the cross, and the criminals also, one at His right hand and one at His left.When they came to the place that is called The Skull, they crucified him there with the criminals, one on the right and the other on the left.and when they came to the place that is called Skull, there they crucified him and the evil-doers, one on the right hand and one on the left.
Luke 23:34Jesus prayed, "Father, forgive them, for they know not what they are doing." And they divided His garments among them, drawing lots for them;Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, for they don't know what they are doing." Dividing his garments among them, they cast lots.And Jesus said, `Father, forgive them, for they have not known what they do;` and parting his garments they cast a lot.
Luke 23:35and the people stood looking on. The Rulers, too, repeatedly uttered their bitter taunts. "This fellow," they said, "saved others: let him save himself, if he is God's Anointed, the Chosen One."The people stood watching. The rulers with them also scoffed at him, saying, "He saved others. Let him save himself, if this is the Christ of God, his chosen one!"And the people were standing, looking on, and the rulers also were sneering with them, saying, `Others he saved, let him save himself, if this be the Christ, the choice one of God.`
Luke 23:36And the soldiers also made sport of Him, coming and offering Him sour wine and saying,The soldiers also mocked him, coming to him and offering him vinegar,And mocking him also were the soldiers, coming near and offering vinegar to him,
Luke 23:37"Are *you* the King of the Jews? Save yourself, then!"and saying, "If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself!"and saying, `If thou be the king of the Jews, save thyself.`
Luke 23:38There was moreover a writing over His head: THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.An inscription was also written over him in letters of Greek, Latin, and Hebrew: "THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS."And there was also a superscription written over him, in letters of Greek, and Roman, and Hebrew, `This is the King of the Jews.`
Luke 23:39Now one of the criminals who had been crucified insulted Him, saying, "Are not you the Christ? Save yourself and us."One of the criminals who was hanged insulted him, saying, "If you are the Christ, save yourself and us!"And one of the evil-doers who were hanged, was speaking evil of him, saying, `If thou be the Christ, save thyself and us.`
Luke 23:40But the other, answering, reproved him. "Do you also not fear God," he said, "when you are actually suffering the same punishment?But the other answered, and rebuking him said, "Don't you even fear God, seeing you are in the same condemnation?And the other answering, was rebuking him, saying, `Dost thou not even fear God, that thou art in the same judgment?
Luke 23:41And we indeed are suffering justly, for we are receiving due requital for what we have done. But He has done nothing amiss."And we indeed justly, for we receive the due reward for our deeds, but this man has done nothing wrong."and we indeed righteously, for things worthy of what we did we receive back, but this one did nothing out of place;`
Luke 23:42And he said, "Jesus, remember me when you come in your Kingdom."He said to Jesus, "Lord, remember me when you come into your kingdom."and he said to Jesus, `Remember me, lord, when thou mayest come in thy reign;`
Luke 23:43"I tell you in solemn truth," replied Jesus, "that this very day you shall be with me in Paradise."He said to him, "Most assuredly I tell you, today you will be with me in Paradise."and Jesus said to him, `Verily I say to thee, To-day with me thou shalt be in the paradise.`
Luke 23:44It was now about noon, and a darkness came over the whole country till three o'clock in the afternoon.It was now about the sixth hour, and darkness came over the whole land until the ninth hour.And it was, as it were, the sixth hour, and darkness came over all the land till the ninth hour,
Luke 23:45The sun was darkened, and the curtain of the Sanctuary was torn down the middle,The sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was torn in two.and the sun was darkened, and the vail of the sanctuary was rent in the midst,
Luke 23:46and Jesus cried out in a loud voice, and said, "Father, to Thy hands I entrust my spirit." And after uttering these words He yielded up His spirit.Jesus, crying with a loud voice, said, "Father, into your hands I commit my spirit!" Having said this, he breathed his last.and having cried with a loud voice, Jesus said, `Father, to Thy hands I commit my spirit;` and these things having said, he breathed forth the spirit.
Luke 23:47The Captain, seeing what had happened, gave glory to God, saying, "Beyond question this man was innocent."When the centurion saw what was done, he glorified God, saying, "Certainly this was a righteous man."And the centurion having seen what was done, did glorify God, saying, `Really this man was righteous;`
Luke 23:48And all the crowds that had come together to this sight, after seeing all that had occurred, returned to the city beating their breasts.All the multitudes that came together to see this, when they saw the things that were done, returned beating their breasts.and all the multitudes who were come together to this sight, beholding the things that came to pass, smiting their breasts did turn back;
Luke 23:49But all His acquaintances, and the women who had been His followers after leaving Galilee, continued standing at a distance and looking on.All his acquaintances, and the women who followed with him from Galilee, stood far away, watching these things.and all his acquaintances stood afar off, and women who did follow him from Galilee, beholding these things.
Luke 23:50There was a member of the Council of the name of Joseph, a kind-hearted and upright man,Behold, a man named Joseph, who was a member of the council, a good and righteous manAnd lo, a man, by name Joseph, being a counsellor, a man good and righteous,
Luke 23:51who came from the Jewish town of Arimathaea and was awaiting the coming of the Kingdom of God. He had not concurred in the design or action of the Council,(he had not consented to their counsel and deed), from Arimathaea, a city of the Jews, who was also waiting for the kingdom of God:he was not consenting to their counsel and deed from Arimathea, a city of the Jews, who also himself was expecting the reign of God,
Luke 23:52and now he went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.this man went to Pilate, and asked for Jesus' body.he, having gone near to Pilate, asked the body of Jesus,
Luke 23:53Then, taking it down, he wrapped it in a linen sheet and laid it in a tomb in the rock, where no one else had yet been put.He took it down, and wrapped it in a linen cloth, and laid him in a tomb that was cut in stone, where no man had ever yet lain.and having taken it down, he wrapped it in fine linen, and placed it in a tomb hewn out, where no one was yet laid.
Luke 23:54It was the Preparation Day, and the Sabbath was near at hand.It was the day of the Preparation, and the Sabbath was coming on.And the day was a preparation, and sabbath was approaching,
Luke 23:55The women those who had come with Jesus from Galilee followed close behind, and saw the tomb and how His body was placed.The women, who had come with him out of Galilee, followed after, and saw the tomb, and how his body was laid.and the women also who have come with him out of Galilee having followed after, beheld the tomb, and how his body was placed,
Luke 23:56Then they returned, and prepared spices and perfumes. On the Sabbath they rested in obedience to the Commandment.They returned, and prepared spices and ointments. On the Sabbath they rested according to the commandment.and having turned back, they made ready spices and ointments, and on the sabbath, indeed, they rested, according to the command.
