John 9:1As He passed by, He saw a man who had been blind from his birth. And passing by, he saw a man blind from birth,And when he went on his way, he saw a man blind from birth.
John 9:2So His disciples asked Him, "Rabbi, who sinned this man or his parents that he was born blind?"and his disciples asked him, saying, `Rabbi, who did sin, this one or his parents, that he should be born blind?`And his disciples put a question to him, saying, Master, was it because of this man's sin, or the sin of his father and mother, that he has been blind from birth?
John 9:3"Neither he nor his parents sinned," answered Jesus, "but he was born blind in order that God's mercy might be openly shown in him.Jesus answered, `Neither did this one sin nor his parents, but that the works of God may be manifested in him;Jesus said in answer, It was not because of his sin, or because of his father's or mother's; it was so that the works of God might be seen openly in him.
John 9:4We must do the works of Him who sent me while there is daylight. Night is coming on, when no one can work.it behoveth me to be working the works of Him who sent me while it is day; night doth come, when no one is able to work:While it is day we have to do the works of him who sent me: the night comes when no work may be done.
John 9:5When I am in the world, I am the Light of the world."when I am in the world, I am a light of the world.`As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.
John 9:6After thus speaking, He spat on the ground, and then, kneading the dust and spittle into clay, He smeared the clay over the man's eyes and said to him,These things saying, he spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and rubbed the clay on the eyes of the blind man, and said to him,Having said these words, he put earth, mixed with water from his mouth, on the man's eyes,
John 9:7"Go and wash in the pool of Siloam" the name means `Sent.' So he went and washed his eyes, and returned able to see.`Go away, wash at the pool of Siloam,` which is, interpreted, Sent. He went away, therefore, and did wash, and came seeing; And said to him, Go and make yourself clean in the bath of Siloam (the sense of the name is, Sent). So he went away and, after washing, came back able to see.
John 9:8His neighbours, therefore, and the other people to whom he had been a familiar object because he was a beggar, began asking, "Is not this the man who used to sit and beg?"the neighbours, therefore, and those seeing him before, that he was blind, said, `Is not this he who is sitting and begging?`Then the neighbours and others who had seen him before in the street, with his hand out for money, said, Is not this the man who got money from people?
John 9:9"Yes it is," replied some of them. "No it is not," said others, "but he is like him." His own statement was, "I am the man."others said `This is he;` and others `He is like to him;` he himself said, `I am [he].`Some said, It is he: others said, No, but he is like him. He said, I am he.
John 9:10"How then were your eyes opened?" they asked. They said, therefore, to him, `How were thine eyes opened?`So they said to him, How then were your eyes made open?
John 9:11"He whose name is Jesus," he answered, "made clay and smeared my eyes with it, and then told me to go to Siloam and wash. So I went and washed and obtained sight."he answered and said, `A man called Jesus made clay, and rubbed my eyes, and said to me, Go away to the pool of Siloam, and wash; and having gone away and having washed, I received sight;`His answer was: The man who is named Jesus put earth mixed with water on my eyes, and said to me, Go and make yourself clean in Siloam: so I went away and, after washing, am now able to see.
John 9:12"Where is he?" they inquired, but the man did not know.they said, therefore, to him, `Where is that one?` he saith, `I have not known.`And they said to him, Where is he? His answer was: I have no knowledge.
John 9:13They brought him to the Pharisees the man who had been blind. They bring him to the Pharisees who once [was] blind,They took him before the Pharisees this man who had been blind.
John 9:14Now the day on which Jesus made the clay and opened the man's eyes was the Sabbath.and it was a sabbath when Jesus made the clay, and opened his eyes. Now the day on which the earth was mixed by Jesus and the man's eyes were made open was the Sabbath.
John 9:15So the Pharisees renewed their questioning as to how he had obtained his sight. "He put clay on my eyes," he replied, "and I washed, and now I can see."Again, therefore, the Pharisees also were asking him how he received sight, and he said to them, `Clay he did put upon my eyes, and I did wash and I see.`So the Pharisees put more questions to him about how his eyes had been made open. And he said to them, He put earth on my eyes, and I had a wash and am able to see.
John 9:16This led some of the Pharisees to say, "That man has not come from God, for he does not keep the Sabbath." "How is it possible for a bad man to do such miracles?" argued others.Of the Pharisees, therefore, certain said, `This man is not from God, because the sabbath he doth not keep;` others said, `How is a man a sinful one able to do such signs?` and there was a division among them. Then some of the Pharisees said, That man has not come from God, for he does not keep the Sabbath. Others said, How is it possible for a sinner to do such signs? So there was a division among them.
John 9:17And there was a division among them. So again they asked the once blind man, "What is your account of him? for he opened your eyes." "He is a Prophet," he replied. They said to the blind man again, `Thou what dost thou say of him that he opened thine eyes?`Again they said to the blind man, What have you to say about him for opening your eyes? And he said, He is a prophet.
John 9:18The Jews, however, did not believe the statement concerning him that he had been blind and had obtained his sight until they called his parents and asked them, and he said `He is a prophet.` The Jews, therefore, did not believe concerning him that he was blind and did receive sight, till that they called the parents of him who received sight,Now the Jews had no belief in the statement that he had been blind and was now able to see, till they sent for the father and mother of the man whose eyes had been made open,
John 9:19"Is this your son, who you say was born blind? How is it then that he can now see?"and they asked them, saying, `Is your son, of whom ye say that he was born blind? how then now doth he see?`And put the question to them, saying, Is this your son, of whom you say that he was blind at birth? how is it then that he is now able to see?
John 9:20"We know," replied the parents, "that this is our son and that he was born blind; His parents answered them and said, `We have known that this is our son, and that he was born blind; In answer his father and mother said, We are certain that this is our son and that he was blind at birth:
John 9:21but how it is that he can now see or who has opened his eyes we do not know. Ask him himself; he is of full age; he himself will give his own account of it."and how he now seeth, we have not known; or who opened his eyes, we have not known; himself is of age, ask him; he himself shall speak concerning himself.`But how it is he is now able to see, or who made his eyes open, we are not able to say: put the question to him; he is old enough to give an answer for himself.
John 9:22Such was their answer, because they were afraid of the Jews; for the Jews had already settled among themselves that if any one should acknowledge Jesus as the Christ, he should be excluded from the synagogue. These things said his parents, because they were afraid of the Jews, for already had the Jews agreed together, that if any one may confess him Christ, he may be put out of the synagogue; They said this because of their fear of the Jews: for the Jews had come to an agreement that if any man said that Jesus was the Christ he would be put out of the Synagogue.
John 9:23That was why his parents said, "He is of full age: ask him himself."because of this his parents said `He is of age, ask him.`That was the reason why they said, He is old enough; put the question to him.
John 9:24A second time therefore they called the man who had been blind, and said, "Give God the praise: we know that that man is a sinner."They called, therefore, a second time the man who was blind, and they said to him, `Give glory to God, we have known that this man is a sinner;`So they sent a second time for the man who had been blind and they said to him, Give glory to God: it is clear to us that this man is a sinner.
John 9:25"Whether he is a sinner or not, I do not know," he replied; "one thing I know that I was once blind and that now I can see."he answered, therefore, and said, `If he be a sinner I have not known, one thing I have known, that, being blind, now I see.`He said in answer, I have no knowledge if he is a sinner or not, but one thing I am certain about; I was blind, and now I see.
John 9:26"What did he do to you?" they asked; "how did he open your eyes?"And they said to him again, `What did he to thee? how did he open thine eyes?`Then they said to him, What did he do to you? how did he give you the use of your eyes?
John 9:27"I have told you already," he replied, "and you did not listen to me. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you also mean to be disciples of his?"He answered them, `I told you already, and ye did not hear; why again do ye wish to hear? do ye also wish to become his disciples?`His answer was: I have said it before, but your ears were shut: why would you have me say it again? is it your desire to become his disciples?
John 9:28Then they railed at him, and said, "You are that man's disciple, but we are disciples of Moses. They reviled him, therefore, and said, `Thou art his disciple, and we are Moses` disciples; And they were angry with him and said, You are his disciple, but we are disciples of Moses.
John 9:29We know that God spoke to Moses; but as for this fellow we do not know where he comes from."we have known that God hath spoken to Moses, but this one we have not known whence he is.`We are certain that God gave his word to Moses: but as for this man, we have no knowledge where he comes from.
John 9:30"Why, this is marvellous!" the man replied; "you do not know where he comes from, and yet he has opened my eyes! The man answered and said to them, `Why, in this is a wonderful thing, that ye have not known whence he is, and he opened my eyes! The man said in answer, Why, here is a strange thing! You have no knowledge where he comes from though he gave me the use of my eyes.
John 9:31We know that God does not listen to bad people, but that if any one is a God-fearing man and obeys Him, to him He listens.and we have known that God doth not hear sinners, but, if any one may be a worshipper of God, and may do His will, him He doth hear;We have knowledge that God does not give ear to sinners, but if any man is a worshipper of God and does his pleasure, to him God's ears are open.
John 9:32From the beginning of the world such a thing was never heard of as that any one should open the eyes of a man blind from his birth.from the age it was not heard, that any one did open eyes of one who hath been born blind; In all the years nobody has ever before seen the eyes of a man blind from birth made open.
John 9:33Had that man not come from God, he could have done nothing."if this one were not from God, he were not able to do anything.`If this man did not come from God he would be unable to do anything.
John 9:34"You," they replied, "were wholly begotten and born in sin, and do *you* teach *us*?" And they put him out of the synagogue. They answered and said to him, `In sins thou wast born altogether, and thou dost teach us!` and they cast him forth without.Their answer was: You came to birth through sin; do you make yourself our teacher? And they put him out of the Synagogue.
John 9:35Jesus heard that they had done this. So having found him, He asked him, "Do you believe in the Son of God?"Jesus heard that they cast him forth without, and having found him, he said to him, `Dost thou believe in the Son of God?`It came to the ears of Jesus that they had put him out, and meeting him he said, Have you faith in the Son of man?
John 9:36"Who is He, Sir?" replied the man. "Tell me, so that I may believe in Him."he answered and said, `Who is he, sir, that I may believe in him?`He said in answer, And who is he, Lord? Say, so that I may have faith in him.
John 9:37"You have seen Him," said Jesus; "and not only so: He is now speaking to you."And Jesus said to him, `Thou hast both seen him, and he who is speaking with thee is he;`Jesus said to him, You have seen him; it is he who is talking to you.
John 9:38"I believe, Sir," he said. And he threw himself at His feet.and he said, `I believe, sir,` and bowed before him.And he said, Lord, I have faith. And he gave him worship.
John 9:39"I came into this world," said Jesus, "to judge men, that those who do not see may see, and that those who do see may become blind."And Jesus said, `For judgment I to this world did come, that those not seeing may see, and those seeing may become blind.`And Jesus said, I came into this world to be a judge, so that those who do not see may see, and those who see may become blind.
John 9:40These words were heard by those of the Pharisees who were present, and they asked Him, "Are *we* also blind?"And those of the Pharisees who were with him heard these things, and they said to him, `Are we also blind?`These words came to the ears of the Pharisees who were with him and they said to him, Are we, then, blind?
John 9:41"If you were blind," answered Jesus, "you would have no sin; but as a matter of fact you boast that you see. So your sin remains!"Jesus said to them, `If ye were blind, ye were not having had sin, but now ye say We see, therefore doth your sin remain.Jesus said to them, If you were blind you would have no sin: but now that you say, We see; your sin is there still.
