Hebrews 5:1 | For every High Priest is chosen from among men, and is appointed to act on behalf of men in matters relating to God, in order to offer both gifts and sin-offerings, | For every chief priest out of men taken in behalf of men is set in things [pertaining] to God, that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins, | For every high priest taken from amongst men is established for men in things relating to God, that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins; |
Hebrews 5:2 | and must be one who is able to bear patiently with the ignorant and erring, because he himself also is beset with infirmity. | able to be gentle to those ignorant and going astray, since himself also is compassed with infirmity; | being able to exercise forbearance towards the ignorant and erring, since he himself also is clothed with infirmity; |
Hebrews 5:3 | And for this reason he is required to offer sin-offerings not only for the people but also for himself. | and because of this infirmity he ought, as for the people, so also for himself to offer for sins; | and, on account of this [infirmity], he ought, even as for the people, so also for himself, to offer for sins. |
Hebrews 5:4 | And no one takes this honourable office upon himself, but only accepts it when called to it by God, as Aaron was. | and no one to himself doth take the honour, but he who is called by God, as also Aaron: | And no one takes the honour to himself but [as] called by God, even as Aaron also. |
Hebrews 5:5 | So Christ also did not claim for Himself the honour of being made High Priest, but was appointed to it by Him who said to Him, "My Son art Thou: I have to-day become Thy Father;" | so also the Christ did not glorify himself to become chief priest, but He who spake unto him: `My Son thou art, I to-day have begotten thee;` | Thus the Christ also has not glorified himself to be made a high priest; but he who had said to him, *Thou* art my Son, *I* have to-day begotten thee. |
Hebrews 5:6 | as also in another passage He says, "Thou art a priest for ever, belonging to the order of Melchizedek." | as also in another [place] He saith, `Thou [art] a priest to the age, according to the order of Melchisedek;` | Even as also in another [place] he says, *Thou* [art] a priest for ever according to the order of Melchisedec. |
Hebrews 5:7 | For Jesus during his earthly life offered up prayers and entreaties, crying aloud and weeping as He pleaded with Him who was able to bring Him in safety out of death, and He was delivered from the terror from which He shrank. | who in the days of his flesh both prayers and supplications unto Him who was able to save him from death with strong crying and tears having offered up, and having been heard in respect to that which he feared, | Who in the days of his flesh, having offered up both supplications and entreaties to him who was able to save him out of death, with strong crying and tears; (and having been heard because of his piety;) |
Hebrews 5:8 | Although He was God's Son, yet He learned obedience from the sufferings which He endured; | through being a Son, did learn by the things which he suffered the obedience, | though he were Son, he learned obedience from the things which he suffered; |
Hebrews 5:9 | and so, having been made perfect, He became to all who obey Him the source and giver of eternal salvation. | and having been made perfect, he did become to all those obeying him a cause of salvation age-during, | and having been perfected, became to all them that obey him, author of eternal salvation; |
Hebrews 5:10 | For God Himself addresses Him as a High Priest for ever, belonging to the order of Melchizedek. | having been addressed by God a chief priest, according to the order of Melchisedek, | addressed by God [as] high priest according to the order of Melchisedec. |
Hebrews 5:11 | Concerning Him we have much to say, and much that it would be difficult to make clear to you, since you have become so dull of apprehension. | concerning whom we have much discourse and of hard explanation to say, since ye have become dull of hearing, | Concerning whom we have much to say, and hard to be interpreted in speaking [of it], since ye are become dull in hearing. |
Hebrews 5:12 | For although, considering the long time you have been believers, you ought now to be teachers of others, you really need some one to teach you over again the very rudiments of the truths of God, and you have come to require milk instead of solid food. | for even owing to be teachers, because of the time, again ye have need that one teach you what [are] the elements of the beginning of the oracles of God, and ye have become having need of milk, and not of strong food, | For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have again need that [one] should teach you what [are] the elements of the beginning of the oracles of God, and are become such as have need of milk, [and] not of solid food. |
Hebrews 5:13 | By people who live on milk I mean those who are imperfectly acquainted with the teaching concerning righteousness. | for every one who is partaking of milk [is] unskilled in the word of righteousness for he is an infant, | For every one that partakes of milk [is] unskilled in the word of righteousness, for he is a babe; |
Hebrews 5:14 | Such persons are mere babes. But solid food is for adults that is, for those who through constant practice have their spiritual faculties carefully trained to distinguish good from evil. | and of perfect men is the strong food, who because of the use are having the senses exercised, unto the discernment both of good and of evil. | but solid food belongs to full-grown men, who, on account of habit, have their senses exercised for distinguishing both good and evil. |
