Luke 3:1Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being Governor of Judaea, Herod Tetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip Tetrarch of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias Tetrarch of Abilene,And in the fifteenth year of the government of Tiberius Caesar Pontius Pilate being governor of Judea, and Herod tetrarch of Galilee, and Philip his brother, tetrarch of Ituraea and of the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of AbileneNow in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Cesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of Iturea and of the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanius the tetrarch of Abilene,
Luke 3:2during the High-priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, a message from God came to John, the son of Zechariah, in the Desert.Annas and Caiaphas being chief priests there came a word of God unto John the son of Zacharias, in the wilderness,Annas and Caiaphas being the high priests, the word of God came to John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness.
Luke 3:3John went into all the district about the Jordan proclaiming a baptism of the penitent for the forgiveness of sins;and he came to all the region round the Jordan, proclaiming a baptism of reformation to remission of sins,And he came into all the country about Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance, for the remission of sins;
Luke 3:4as it is written in the book of the prophet Isaiah, "The voice of one crying aloud! `In the Desert prepare ye a road for the Lord: make His highway straight.as it hath been written in the scroll of the words of Isaiah the prophet, saying, `A voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, straight make ye His paths;As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.
Luke 3:5Every ravine shall be filled up, and every mountain and hill levelled down, the crooked places shall be turned into straight roads, and the rugged ways into smooth;every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be made low, and the crooked shall become straightness, and the rough become smooth ways;Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be brought low; and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways shall be made smooth;
Luke 3:6and then shall all mankind see God's salvation.'"and all flesh shall see the salvation of God.`And all flesh shall see the salvation of God.
Luke 3:7Accordingly John used to say to the crowds who came out to be baptized by him, "O vipers' brood, who has warned you to flee from the coming wrath?Then said he to the multitudes coming forth to be baptised by him, `Brood of vipers! who did prompt you to flee from the coming wrath?Then said he to the multitude that came forth to be baptized by him, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?
Luke 3:8Live lives which shall prove your change of heart; and do not begin to say to yourselves, `We have Abraham as our forefather,' for I tell you that God can raise up descendants for Abraham from these stones.make, therefore, fruits worthy of the reformation, and begin not to say within yourselves, We have a father Abraham; for I say to you, that God is able out of these stones to raise children to Abraham;Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance, and begin not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham for our father: for I say to you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children to Abraham.
Luke 3:9And even now the axe is lying at the root of the trees, so that every tree which fails to yield good fruit will quickly be hewn down and thrown into the fire."and already also the axe unto the root of the trees is laid, every tree, therefore, not making good fruit is cut down, and to fire it is cast.`And now also the ax is laid to the root of the trees: every tree therefore which bringeth not forth good fruit, is hewn down, and cast into the fire.
Luke 3:10The crowds repeatedly asked him, "What then are we to do?"And the multitudes were questioning him, saying, `What, then, shall we do?`And the people asked him, saying, What shall we do then?
Luke 3:11"Let the man who has two coats," he answered, "give one to the man who has none; and let the man who has food share it with others."and he answering saith to them, `He having two coats let him impart to him having none, and he having victuals in like manner let him do.`He answereth and saith to them, He that hath two coats, let him impart to him that hath none; and he that hath provisions, let him do likewise.
Luke 3:12There came also a party of tax-gatherers to be baptized, and they asked him, "Rabbi, what are we to do?"And there came also tax-gatherers to be baptised, and they said unto him, `Teacher, what shall we do?`Then came also publicans to be baptized, and said to him, Master, what shall we do?
Luke 3:13"Do not exact more than the legal amount," he replied.and he said unto them, `Exact no more than that directed you.`And he said to them, Exact no more than that which is appointed you.
Luke 3:14The soldiers also once and again inquired of him, "And we, what are we to do?" His answer was, "Neither intimidate any one nor lay false charges; and be content with your pay."And questioning him also were those warring, saying, `And we, what shall we do?` and he said unto them, `Do violence to no one, nor accuse falsely, and be content with your wages.`And the soldiers likewise asked him, saying, And what shall we do? And he said to them, Do violence to no man, neither accuse any falsely, and be content with your wages.
Luke 3:15And while the people were in suspense and all were debating in their minds whether John might possibly be the Anointed One,And the people are looking forward, and all are reasoning in their hearts concerning John, whether or not he may be the Christ;And as the people were in expectation, and all men mused in their hearts concerning John, whether he was the Christ, or not;
Luke 3:16he answered the question by saying to them all, "As for me, I am baptizing you with water, but One mightier than I is coming, whose very sandal-strap I am not worthy to unfasten: He will baptize you in the Holy Spirit and with fire.John answered, saying to all, `I indeed with water do baptise you, but he cometh who is mightier than I, of whom I am not worthy to loose the latchet of his sandals he shall baptise you with the Holy Spirit and with fire;John answered, saying to them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit, and with fire:
Luke 3:17His winnowing-shovel is in His hand to clear out His threshing-floor, and to gather the wheat into His storehouse; but the chaff He will burn up in fire unquenchable."whose winnowing shovel [is] in his hand, and he will thoroughly cleanse his floor, and will gather the wheat to his storehouse, and the chaff he will burn with fire unquenchable.`Whose fan is in his hand, and he will thoroughly cleanse his floor, and will gather the wheat into his granary; but the chaff he will burn with fire unquenchable.
Luke 3:18With many exhortations besides these he declared the Good News to the people.And, therefore, indeed with many other things, exhorting, he was proclaiming good news to the people,And many other things in his exhortation he preached to the people.
Luke 3:19But Herod the Tetrarch, being repeatedly rebuked by him about Herodias his brother's wife, and about all the wicked deeds that he had done,and Herod the tetrarch, being reproved by him concerning Herodias the wife of Philip his brother, and concerning all the evils that Herod did,But Herod the tetrarch, being reproved by him on account of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife, and for all the evils which Herod had done,
Luke 3:20now added this to crown all the rest, that he threw John into prison.added also this to all, that he shut up John in the prison.Added yet this above all, that he shut up John in prison.
Luke 3:21Now when all the people had been baptized, and Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, the sky opened,And it came to pass, in all the people being baptised, Jesus also being baptised, and praying, the heaven was opened,Now when all the people were baptized, it came to pass, that Jesus also being baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened,
Luke 3:22and the Holy Spirit came down in bodily shape, like a dove, upon Him, and a voice came from Heaven, which said, "Thou art My Son, dearly loved: in Thee is My delight."and the Holy Spirit came down in a bodily appearance, as if a dove, upon him, and a voice came out of heaven, saying, `Thou art My Son the Beloved, in thee I did delight.`And the Holy Spirit descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased.
Luke 3:23And He Jesus when He began His ministry, was about thirty years old. He was the son (it was supposed) of Joseph, son of Heli,And Jesus himself was beginning to be about thirty years of age, being, as was supposed, son of Joseph,And Jesus himself began to be about thirty years of age, being (as was supposed) the son of Joseph, who was the son of Heli,
