Acts 12:1Now, about that time, King Herod arrested certain members of the Church, in order to ill-treat them;And about that time, Herod the king put forth his hands, to do evil to certain of those of the assembly,Now about that time, Herod the king put forth his hands to oppress some of the assembly.
Acts 12:2and James, John's brother, he beheaded.and he killed James, the brother of John, with the sword,He killed James, the brother of John, with the sword.
Acts 12:3Finding that this gratified the Jews, he proceeded to seize Peter also; these being the days of Unleavened Bread.and having seen that it is pleasing to the Jews, he added to lay hold of Peter also and they were the days of the unleavened foodWhen he saw that it pleased the Jews, he proceeded to seize Peter also. This was during the days of unleavened bread.
Acts 12:4He had him arrested and lodged in jail, handing him over to the care of sixteen soldiers; and intended after the Passover to bring him out again to the people.whom also having seized, he did put in prison, having delivered [him] to four quaternions of soldiers to guard him, intending after the passover to bring him forth to the people.When he had captured him, he put him in prison, and delivered him to four squads of four soldiers each to guard him, intending to bring him out to the people after the Passover.
Acts 12:5So Peter was kept in prison; but long and fervent prayer was offered to God by the Church on his behalf.Peter, therefore, indeed, was kept in the prison, and fervent prayer was being made by the assembly unto God for him,Peter therefore was kept in the prison, but constant prayer was made by the assembly to God for him.
Acts 12:6Now when Herod was on the point of taking him out of prison, that very night Peter was asleep between two soldiers, bound with two chains, and guards were on duty outside the door.and when Herod was about to bring him forth, the same night was Peter sleeping between two soldiers, having been bound with two chains, guards also before the door were keeping the prison,The same night when Herod was about to bring him out, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains. Guards in front of the door kept the prison.
Acts 12:7Suddenly an angel of the Lord stood by him, and a light shone in the cell; and, striking Peter on the side, he woke him and said, "Rise quickly." Instantly the chains dropped off his wrists.and lo, a messenger of the Lord stood by, and a light shone in the buildings, and having smitten Peter on the side, he raised him up, saying, `Rise in haste,` and his chains fell from off [his] hands.Behold, an angel of the Lord stood by him, and a light shone in the cell. He struck Peter on the side, and woke him up, saying, "Stand up quickly!" His chains fell off from his hands.
Acts 12:8"Fasten your girdle," said the angel, "and tie on your sandals." He did so. Then the angel said, "Throw your cloak round you, and follow me."The messenger also said to him, `Gird thyself, and bind on thy sandals;` and he did so; and he saith to him, `Put thy garment round and be following me;`The angel said to him, "Put on your clothes, and tie on your sandals." He did so. He said to him, "Wrap your cloak around you, and follow me."
Acts 12:9So Peter went out, following him, yet could not believe that what the angel was doing was real, but supposed that he saw a vision.and having gone forth, he was following him, and he knew not that it is true that which is done through the messenger, and was thinking he saw a vision,He went out, and followed him. He didn't know that what was done by the angel was real, but thought he saw a vision.
Acts 12:10And passing through the first ward and the second, they came to the iron gate leading into the city. This opened to them of itself; and, going out, they passed on through one of the streets, and then suddenly the angel left him.and having passed through a first ward, and a second, they came unto the iron gate that is leading to the city, which of its own accord did open to them, and having gone forth, they went on through one street, and immediately the messenger departed from him.When they were past the first and the second guard, they came to the iron gate that leads into the city, which opened to them by itself. They went out, and passed on through one street, and immediately the angel departed from him.
Acts 12:11Peter coming to himself said, "Now I know for certain that the Lord has sent His angel and has rescued me from the power of Herod and from all that the Jewish people were anticipating."And Peter having come to himself, said, `Now I have known of a truth that the Lord did sent forth His messenger, and did deliver me out of the hand of Herod, and all the expectation of the people of the Jews;`When Peter had come to himself, he said, "Now I truly know that the Lord has sent forth his angel and delivered me out of the hand of Herod, and from everything the Jewish people were expecting."
Acts 12:12So, after thinking things over, he went to the house of Mary, the mother of John surnamed Mark, where a large number of people were assembled, praying.also, having considered, he came unto the house of Mary, the mother of John, who is surnamed Mark, where there were many thronged together and praying.Thinking about that, he came to the house of Mary, the mother of John whose surname was Mark, where many were gathered together and were praying.
Acts 12:13When he knocked at the wicket in the door, a maidservant named Rhoda came to answer the knock;And Peter having knocked at the door of the porch, there came a damsel to hearken, by name Rhoda,When Peter knocked at the door of the gate, a maid named Rhoda came to answer.
Acts 12:14and recognizing Peter's voice, for very joy she did not open the door, but ran in and told them that Peter was standing there.and having known the voice of Peter, from the joy she did not open the porch, but having run in, told of the standing of Peter before the porch,When she recognized Peter's voice, she didn't open the gate for joy, but ran in, and reported that Peter stood before the gate.
Acts 12:15"You are mad," they said. But she strenuously maintained that it was true. "It is his guardian angel," they said.and they said unto her, `Thou art mad;` and she was confidently affirming [it] to be so, and they said, `It is his messenger;`They said to her, "You are crazy!" But she insisted that it was so. They said, "It is his angel."
Acts 12:16Meanwhile Peter went on knocking, until at last they opened the door and saw that it was really he, and were filled with amazement.and Peter was continuing knocking, and having opened, they saw him, and were astonished,But Peter continued knocking. When they had opened, they saw him, and were amazed.
Acts 12:17But he motioned with his hand for silence, and then described to them how the Lord had brought him out of the prison. "Tell all this to James and the brethren," he added. Then he left them, and went to another place.and having beckoned to them with the hand to be silent, he declared to them how the Lord brought him out of the prison, and he said, `Declare to James and to the brethren these things;` and having gone forth, he went on to another place.But he, beckoning to them with his hand to be silent, declared to them how the Lord had brought him forth out of the prison. He said, "Tell these things to James, and to the brothers." He departed, and went to another place.
Acts 12:18When morning came, there was no little commotion among the soldiers, as to what could possibly have become of Peter.And day having come, there was not a little stir among the soldiers what then was become of Peter,Now as soon as it was day, there was no small stir among the soldiers about what had become of Peter.
Acts 12:19And when Herod had had him searched for and could not find him, after sharply questioning the guards he ordered them away to execution. He then went down from Judaea to Caesarea and remained there.and Herod having sought for him, and not having found, having examined the guards, did command [them] to be led away to punishment, and having gone down from Judea to Cesarea, he was abiding [there].When Herod had sought for him, and didn't find him, he examined the guards, and commanded that they should be put to death. He went down from Judea to Caesarea, and stayed there.
Acts 12:20Now the people of Tyre and Sidon had incurred Herod's violent displeasure. So they sent a large deputation to wait on him; and having secured the good will of Blastus, his treasurer, they begged the king to be friendly with them again, because their country was dependent on his for its food supply.And Herod was highly displeased with the Tyrians and Sidonians, and with one accord they came unto him, and having made a friend of Blastus, who [is] over the bed-chambers of the king, they were asking peace, because of their country being nourished from the king`s;Now Herod was highly displeased with those of Tyre and Sidon. They came with one accord to him, and, having made Blastus, the king's chamberlain, their friend, they asked for peace, because their country depended on the king's country for food.
Acts 12:21So, on an appointed day, Herod, having arrayed himself in royal robes, took his seat on the tribunal, and was haranguing them;and on a set day, Herod having arrayed himself in kingly apparel, and having sat down upon the tribunal, was making an oration unto them,On an appointed day, Herod dressed himself in royal clothing, sat on the throne, and gave a speech to them.
Acts 12:22and the assembled people kept shouting, "It is the voice of a god, and not of a man!"and the populace were shouting, `The voice of a god, and not of a man;`The people shouted, "The voice of a god, and not of a man!"
Acts 12:23Instantly an angel of the Lord struck him, because he had not given the glory to God, and being eaten up by worms, he died.and presently there smote him a messenger of the Lord, because he did not give the glory to God, and having been eaten of worms, he expired.Immediately an angel of the Lord struck him, because he didn't give God the glory, and he was eaten by worms, and he died.
Acts 12:24But God's Message prospered, and converts were multiplied.And the word of God did grow and did multiply,But the word of God grew and multiplied.
Acts 12:25And Barnabas and Saul returned from Jerusalem, having discharged their mission, and they brought with them John, surnamed Mark.and Barnabas and Saul did turn back out of Jerusalem, having fulfilled the ministration, having taken also with [them] John, who was surnamed Mark.Barnabas and Saul returned to Jerusalem, when they had fulfilled their service, also taking with them John whose surname was Mark.
