Matthew 2:1Now after the birth of Jesus, which took place at Bethlehem in Judaea in the reign of King Herod, excitement was produced in Jerusalem by the arrival of certain Magi from the east,And Jesus having been born in Beth-Lehem of Judea, in the days of Herod the king, lo, mages from the east came to Jerusalem,Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod, the king, behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem, saying,
Matthew 2:2inquiring, "Where is the newly born king of the Jews? For we have seen his Star in the east, and have come here to do him homage."saying, `Where is he who was born king of the Jews? for we saw his star in the east, and we came to bow to him.`"Where is he who is born King of the Jews? For we saw his star in the east, and have come to worship him."
Matthew 2:3Reports of this soon reached the king, and greatly agitated not only him but all the people of Jerusalem. And Herod the king having heard, was stirred, and all Jerusalem with him,When Herod the king heard it, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.
Matthew 2:4So he assembled all the High Priests and Scribes of the people, and anxiously asked them where the Christ was to be born.and having gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he was inquiring from them where the Christ is born.Gathering together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he asked them where the Christ would be born.
Matthew 2:5"At Bethlehem in Judaea," they replied; "for so it stands written in the words of the Prophet,And they said to him, `In Beth-Lehem of Judea, for thus it hath been written through the prophet,They said to him, "In Bethlehem of Judea, for thus it is written through the prophet,
Matthew 2:6"`And thou, Bethlehem in the land of Judah, by no means the least honorable art thou among princely places in Judah! For from thee shall come a prince one who shall be the Shepherd of My People Israel.'"And thou, Beth-Lehem, the land of Judah, thou art by no means the least among the leaders of Judah, for out of thee shall come one leading, who shall feed My people Israel.`'You Bethlehem, land of Judah, Are in no way least among the princes of Judah: For out of you shall come forth a governor, Who shall shepherd my people, Israel'".
Matthew 2:7Thereupon Herod sent privately for the Magi and ascertained from them the exact time of the star's appearing. Then Herod, privately having called the mages, did inquire exactly from them the time of the appearing star,Then Herod secretly called the wise men, and learned from them exactly what time the star appeared.
Matthew 2:8He then directed them to go to Bethlehem, adding, "Go and make careful inquiry about the child, and when you have found him, bring me word, that I too may come and do him homage."and having sent them to Beth-Lehem, he said, `Having gone inquire ye exactly for the child, and whenever ye may have found, bring me back word, that I also having come may bow to him.`He sent them to Bethlehem, and said, "Go and search diligently for the young child. When you have found him, bring me word, so that I also may come and worship him."
Matthew 2:9After hearing what the king said, they went to Bethlehem, while, strange to say, the star they had seen in the east led them on until it came and stood over the place where the babe was.And they, having heard the king, departed, and lo, the star, that they did see in the east, did go before them, till, having come, it stood over where the child was. They, having heard the king, went their way; and behold, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, until it came and stood over where the young child was.
Matthew 2:10When they saw the star, the sight filled them with intense joy.And having seen the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy,When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceedingly great joy.
Matthew 2:11So they entered the house; and when they saw the babe with His mother Mary, they prostrated themselves and did Him homage, and opening their treasure-chests offered gifts to Him gold, frankincense, and myrrh.and having come to the house, they found the child with Mary his mother, and having fallen down they bowed to him, and having opened their treasures, they presented to him gifts, gold, and frankincense, and myrrh,They came into the house and saw the young child with Mary, his mother, and they fell down and worshipped him. Opening their treasures, they offered to him gifts: gold, frankincense, and myrrh.
Matthew 2:12But being forbidden by God in a dream to return to Herod, they went back to their own country by a different route.and having been divinely warned in a dream not to turn back unto Herod, through another way they withdrew to their own region.Being warned in a dream that they shouldn't return to Herod, they went back to their own country another way.
Matthew 2:13When they were gone, and angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, "Rise: take the babe and His mother and escape to Egypt, and remain there till I bring you word. For Herod is about to make search for the child in order to destroy Him."And on their having withdrawn, lo, a messenger of the Lord doth appear in a dream to Joseph, saying, `Having risen, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and be thou there till I may speak to thee, for Herod is about to seek the child to destroy him.`Now when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream, saying, "Arise and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and stay there until I tell you, for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him."
Matthew 2:14So Joseph roused himself and took the babe and His mother by night and departed into Egypt. And he, having risen, took the child and his mother by night, and withdrew to Egypt,He arose and took the young child and his mother by night, and departed into Egypt,
Matthew 2:15There he remained till Herod's death, that what the Lord had said through the Prophet might be fulfilled, "Out of Egypt I called My Son."and he was there till the death of Herod, that it might be fulfilled that was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying, `Out of Egypt I did call My Son.`and was there until the death of Herod; that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying, "Out of Egypt I called my son."
Matthew 2:16Then Herod, finding that the Magi had trifled with him, was furious, and sent and massacred all the boys under two years of age, in Bethlehem and all its neighbourhood, according to the date he had so carefully ascertained from the Magi. Then Herod, having seen that he was deceived by the mages, was very wroth, and having sent forth, he slew all the male children in Beth-Lehem, and in all its borders, from two years and under, according to the time that he inquired exactly from the mages. Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked by the wise men, was exceedingly angry, and sent forth, and killed all the male children who were in Bethlehem, and in all the surrounding countryside, from two years old and under, according to the exact time which he had learned from the wise men.
Matthew 2:17Then were these words, spoken by the Prophet Jeremiah, fulfilled,Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet, saying,Then that which was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled, saying,
Matthew 2:18"A voice was heard in Ramah, wailing and bitter lamentation: It was Rachel bewailing her children, and she refused to be comforted because there were no more."`A voice in Ramah was heard lamentation and weeping and much mourning Rachel weeping [for] her children, and she would not be comforted because they are not.`"A voice was heard in Ramah, Lamentation, weeping and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children; She wouldn't be comforted, because they are no more."
Matthew 2:19But after Herod's death an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, and said to him,And Herod having died, lo, a messenger of the Lord in a dream doth appear to Joseph in Egypt,But when Herod was dead, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, saying,
Matthew 2:20"Rise from sleep, and take the child and His mother, and go into the land of Israel, for those who were seeking the child's life are dead."saying, `Having risen, take the child and his mother, and be going to the land of Israel, for they have died those seeking the life of the child.`"Arise and take the young child and his mother, and go into the land of Israel, for those who sought the young child's life are dead."
Matthew 2:21So he roused himself and took the child and His mother and came into the land of Israel. And he, having risen, took the child and his mother, and came to the land of Israel,He arose and took the young child and his mother, and came into the land of Israel.
Matthew 2:22But hearing that Archelaus had succeeded his father Herod on the throne of Judaea, he was afraid to go there; and being instructed by God in a dream he withdrew into Galilee, and having heard that Archelaus doth reign over Judea instead of Herod his father, he was afraid to go thither, and having been divinely warned in a dream, he withdrew to the parts of Galilee,But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning over Judea in the place of his father, Herod, he was afraid to go there. Being warned in a dream, he withdrew into the region of Galilee,
Matthew 2:23and went and settled in a town called Nazareth, in order that these words spoken through the Prophets might be fulfilled, "He shall be called a Nazarene."and coming, he dwelt in a city named Nazareth, that it might be fulfilled that was spoken through the prophets, that `A Nazarene he shall be called.`and came and lived in a city called Nazareth; that it might be fulfilled which was spoken through the prophets: "He will be called a Nazarene."
