James 3:1Let not many of you be teachers, my brothers, knowing that we will receive heavier judgment.Be not many [of you] teachers, my brethren, knowing that we shall receive heavier judgment. Be not many teachers, my brethren, knowing that we shall receive greater judgment.
James 3:2For in many things we all stumble. If anyone doesn't stumble in word, the same is a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body also.For in many things we all stumble. If any stumbleth not in word, the same is a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body also. For we all often offend. If any one offend not in word, *he* [is] a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body too.
James 3:3Indeed, we put bits into the horses' mouths so that they may obey us, and we turn about their whole body.Now if we put the horses' bridles into their mouths that they may obey us, we turn about their whole body also. Behold, we put the bits in the mouths of the horses, that they may obey us, and we turn round their whole bodies.
James 3:4Behold, the ships also, though they are so big and are driven by fierce winds, are yet turned about by a very small rudder, wherever the pilot desires.Behold, the ships also, though they are so great and are driven by rough winds, are yet turned about by a very small rudder, whither the impulse of the steersman willeth. Behold also the ships, which are so great, and driven by violent winds, are turned about by a very small rudder, wherever the pleasure of the helmsman will.
James 3:5So the tongue is also a little member, and boasts great things. Behold, how much wood is kindled by how small a fire!So the tongue also is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how much wood is kindled by how small a fire! Thus also the tongue is a little member, and boasts great things. See how little a fire, how large a wood it kindles!
James 3:6And the tongue is a fire. The world of iniquity among our members is the tongue, which defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature, and is set on fire by Gehenna.And the tongue is a fire: the world of iniquity among our members is the tongue, which defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the wheel of nature, and is set on fire by hell. and the tongue [is] fire, the world of unrighteousness; the tongue is set in our members, the defiler of the whole body, and which sets fire to the course of nature, and is set on fire of hell.
James 3:7For every kind of animal, bird, creeping thing, and thing in the sea, is tamed, and has been tamed by mankind.For every kind of beasts and birds, of creeping things and things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed by mankind. For every species both of beasts and of birds, both of creeping things and of sea animals, is tamed and has been tamed by the human species;
James 3:8But nobody can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.But the tongue can no man tame; [it is] a restless evil, [it is] full of deadly poison. but the tongue can no one among men tame; [it is] an unsettled evil, full of death-bringing poison.
James 3:9With it we bless our God and Father, and with it we curse men, who are made in the image of God.Therewith bless we the Lord and Father; and therewith curse we men, who are made after the likeness of God: Therewith bless we the Lord and Father, and therewith curse we men made after [the] likeness of God.
James 3:10Out of the same mouth comes forth blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so.out of the same mouth cometh forth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be. Out of the same mouth goes forth blessing and cursing. It is not right, my brethren, that these things should be thus.
James 3:11Does a spring send forth from the same opening fresh and bitter water?Doth the fountain send forth from the same opening sweet [water] and bitter? Does the fountain, out of the same opening, pour forth sweet and bitter?
James 3:12Can a fig tree, my brothers, yield olives, or a vine figs? Thus no spring yields both salt water and fresh water.Can a fig tree, my brethren, yield olives, or a vine figs? Neither [can] salt water yield sweet. Can, my brethren, a fig produce olives, or a vine figs? Neither [can] salt [water] make sweet water.
James 3:13Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show his deeds done in gentleness of wisdom by his good life.Who is wise and understanding among you? let him show by his good life his works in meekness of wisdom. Who [is] wise and understanding among you; let him shew out of a good conversation his works in meekness of wisdom;
James 3:14But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your heart, don't boast and don't lie against the truth.But if ye have bitter jealousy and faction in your heart, glory not and lie not against the truth. but if ye have bitter emulation and strife in your hearts, do not boast and lie against the truth.
James 3:15This wisdom is not that which comes down from above, but is earthly, sensual, and demonic.This wisdom is not [a wisdom] that cometh down from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish. This is not the wisdom which comes down from above, but earthly, natural, devilish.
James 3:16For where jealousy and selfish ambition are, there is confusion and every evil deed.For where jealousy and faction are, there is confusion and every vile deed. For where emulation and strife [are], there [is] disorder and every evil thing.
James 3:17But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceful, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, easy to be entreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without variance, without hypocrisy. But the wisdom from above first is pure, then peaceful, gentle, yielding, full of mercy and good fruits, unquestioning, unfeigned.
James 3:18Now the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace for them that make peace. But [the] fruit of righteousness in peace is sown for them that make peace.
