John 18:1When Jesus had spoken these words, he went forth with his disciples over the brook Kidron, where was a garden, into which he entered, himself and his disciples. When Jesus had said these words he went out with his disciples over the stream Kedron to a garden, into which he went with his disciples. When Jesus had spoken these words, he went forth with his disciples over the brook Kidron, where was a garden, into which he entered, himself and his disciples.
John 18:2Now Judas, who betrayed him, also knew the place, for Jesus often resorted there with his disciples. And Judas, who was false to him, had knowledge of the place because Jesus went there frequently with his disciples. Now Judas also, who betrayed him, knew the place: for Jesus oft-times resorted thither with his disciples.
John 18:3Judas then, having taken a detachment of soldiers and officers from the chief priests and the Pharisees, came there with lanterns, torches, and weapons. So Judas, getting a band of armed men and police from the chief priests and Pharisees, went there with lights and with arms.Judas then, having received the band [of soldiers], and officers from the chief priests and the Pharisees, cometh thither with lanterns and torches and weapons.
John 18:4Jesus therefore, knowing all the things that were coming on him, went forth, and said to them, "Who are you looking for?"Then Jesus, having knowledge of everything which was coming on him, went forward and said to them, Who are you looking for?Jesus therefore, knowing all the things that were coming upon him, went forth, and saith unto them, Whom seek ye?
John 18:5They answered him, "Jesus of Nazareth." Jesus said to them, "I AM." Judas also, who betrayed him, was standing with them.Their answer was, Jesus the Nazarene. Jesus said, I am he. And Judas, who was false to him, was there at their side. They answered him, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus saith unto them, I am [he]. And Judas also, who betrayed him, was standing with them.
John 18:6When therefore he said to them, "I AM," they went backward, and fell to the ground. And when he said to them, I am he, they went back, falling to the earth. When therefore he said unto them, I am [he], they went backward, and fell to the ground.
John 18:7Again therefore he asked them, "Who are you looking for?" They said, "Jesus of Nazareth."So again he put the question to them, Who are you looking for? And they said, Jesus the Nazarene.Again therefore he asked them, Whom seek ye? And they said, Jesus of Nazareth.
John 18:8Jesus answered, "I told you that I AM. If therefore you seek me, let these go their way,"Jesus made answer, I have said that I am he; if you are looking for me, let these men go away.Jesus answered, I told you that I am [he]; if therefore ye seek me, let these go their way:
John 18:9that the word might be fulfilled which he spoke, "Of those whom you have given me, I have lost none."(He said this so that his words might come true, I have kept safe all those whom you gave to me.)that the word might be fulfilled which he spake, Of those whom thou hast given me I lost not one.
John 18:10Simon Peter therefore, having a sword, drew it, and struck the high priest's servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant's name was Malchus. Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, took it out and gave the high priest's servant a blow, cutting off his right ear. The servant's name was Malchus.Simon Peter therefore having a sword drew it, and struck the high priest's servant, and cut off his right ear. Now the servant's name was Malchus.
John 18:11Jesus therefore said to Peter, "Put up the sword into its sheath. The cup which the Father has given me, shall I not drink it?"Then Jesus said to Peter, Put back your sword: am I not to take the cup which my Father has given to me?Jesus therefore said unto Peter, Put up the sword into the sheath: the cup which the Father hath given me, shall I not drink it?
John 18:12So the detachment, the commanding officer, and the officers of the Jews, seized Jesus and bound him,Then the band and the chief captain and the police took Jesus and put cords round him.So the band and the chief captain, and the officers of the Jews, seized Jesus and bound him,
John 18:13and led him to Annas first, for he was father-in-law to Caiaphas, who was high priest that year. They took him first to Annas, because Annas was the father-in-law of Caiaphas who was the high priest that year.and led him to Annas first; for he was father in law to Caiaphas, who was high priest that year.
John 18:14Now it was Caiaphas who gave counsel to the Jews, that it was expedient that one man should die for the people. It was Caiaphas who had said to the Jews that it was in their interest for one man to be put to death for the people. Now Caiaphas was he that gave counsel to the Jews, that it was expedient that one man should die for the people.
John 18:15Simon Peter followed Jesus, as did another disciple. Now that disciple was known to the high priest, and entered in with Jesus into the court of the high priest;And Simon Peter went after Jesus with another disciple. Now that disciple was a friend of the high priest and he went in with Jesus into the house of the high priest;And Simon Peter followed Jesus, and [so did] another disciple. Now that disciple was known unto the high priest, and entered in with Jesus into the court of the high priest;
John 18:16but Peter was standing at the door outside. So the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to her who kept the door, and brought in Peter. But Peter was kept outside at the door. Then this other disciple, who was a friend of the high priest, came out and had a word with the girl who kept the door, and took Peter in.but Peter was standing at the door without. So the other disciple, who was known unto the high priest, went out and spake unto her that kept the door, and brought in Peter.
John 18:17Then the maid who kept the door said to Peter, "Are you also one of this man's disciples?" He said, "I am not."Then the girl who was the door-keeper said to Peter, Are you not one of this man's disciples? In answer he said, I am not.The maid therefore that kept the door saith unto Peter, Art thou also [one] of this man's disciples? He saith, I am not.
John 18:18Now the servants and the officers were standing there, having made a fire of coals, for it was cold. They were warming themselves. Peter was with them, standing and warming himself. Now the servants and the police had made a fire of coals because it was cold; they were warming themselves in front of it and Peter was there with them, warming himself. Now the servants and the officers were standing [there], having made a fire of coals; for it was cold; and they were warming themselves: and Peter also was with them, standing and warming himself.
John 18:19The high priest therefore asked Jesus of his disciples, and of his teaching. Then the high priest put questions to Jesus about his disciples and his teaching. The high priest therefore asked Jesus of his disciples, and of his teaching.
John 18:20Jesus answered him, "I spoke openly to the world. I always taught in synagogues, and in the temple, where the Jews always meet. I said nothing in secret.Jesus made answer, I said things openly to the world at all times; I have given my teaching in the Synagogues and in the Temple to which all the Jews come; and I have said nothing secretly.Jesus answered him, I have spoken openly to the world; I ever taught in synagogues, and in the temple, where all the Jews come together; and in secret spake I nothing.
John 18:21Why do you ask me? Ask those who have heard me what I said to them. Behold, these know the things which I said."Why are you questioning me? put questions to my hearers about what I have said to them: they have knowledge of what I said. Why askest thou me? Ask them that have heard [me], what I spake unto them: behold, these know the things which I said.
John 18:22When he had said this, one of the officers standing by slapped Jesus with his hand, saying, "Do you answer the high priest like that?"When he said this, one of the police by his side gave him a blow with his open hand, saying, Do you give such an answer to the high priest? And when he had said this, one of the officers standing by struck Jesus with his hand, saying, Answerest thou the high priest so?
John 18:23Jesus answered him, "If I have spoken evil, testify of the evil; but if well, why do you beat me?"Jesus said in answer, If I have said anything evil, give witness to the evil: but if I said what is true, why do you give me blows?Jesus answered him, If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil: but if well, why smitest thou me?
John 18:24Annas sent him bound to Caiaphas, the high priest. Then Annas sent him chained to Caiaphas, the high priest.Annas therefore sent him bound unto Caiaphas the high priest.
John 18:25Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. They said therefore to him, "Are you also one of his disciples?" He denied it, and said, "I am not."But Simon Peter was still there warming himself by the fire. They said to him, Are you not one of his disciples? He said, No, I am not.Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. They said therefore unto him, Art thou also [one] of his disciples? He denied, and said, I am not.
John 18:26One of the servants of the high priest, being a relative of him whose ear Peter cut off, said, "Didn't I see you in the garden with him?"One of the servants of the high priest, a relation of him whose ear had been cut off by Peter, said, Did I not see you with him in the garden? One of the servants of the high priest, being a kinsman of him whose ear Peter cut off, saith, Did not I see thee in the garden with him?
John 18:27Peter therefore denied again, and immediately the rooster crowed. Then again Peter said, No. And straight away a cock gave its cry.Peter therefore denied again: and straightway the cock crew.
John 18:28They led Jesus therefore from Caiaphas into the Praetorium. It was early, and they themselves didn't enter into the Praetorium, that they might not be defiled, but might eat the Passover. So they took Jesus from the house of Caiaphas to the Praetorium. It was early. They themselves did not go into the Praetorium, so that they might not become unclean, but might take the Passover. They lead Jesus therefore from Caiaphas into the Praetorium: and it was early; and they themselves entered not into the Praetorium, that they might not be defiled, but might eat the passover.
John 18:29Pilate therefore went out to them, and said, "What accusation do you bring against this man?"So Pilate came out to them and put the question: What have you to say against this man?Pilate therefore went out unto them, and saith, What accusation bring ye against this man?
John 18:30They answered him, "If this man weren't an evildoer, we wouldn't have delivered him up to you."They said to him in answer, If the man was not a wrongdoer we would not have given him up to you. They answered and said unto him, If this man were not an evildoer, we should not have delivered him up unto thee.
John 18:31Pilate therefore said to them, "Take him yourselves, and judge him according to your law." Therefore the Jews said to him, "It is not lawful for us to put anyone to death,"Then Pilate said to them, Take him yourselves and let him be judged by your law. But the Jews said to him, We have no right to put any man to death.Pilate therefore said unto them, Take him yourselves, and judge him according to your law. The Jews said unto him, It is not lawful for us to put any man to death:
John 18:32that the word of Jesus might be fulfilled, which he spoke, signifying by what kind of death he should die.(That the word of Jesus might come true, pointing to the sort of death he would have.)that the word of Jesus might be fulfilled, which he spake, signifying by what manner of death he should die.
John 18:33Pilate therefore entered again into the Praetorium, called Jesus, and said to him, "Are you the King of the Jews?"Then Pilate went back into the Praetorium and sent for Jesus and said to him, Are you the King of the Jews?Pilate therefore entered again into the Praetorium, and called Jesus, and said unto him, Art thou the King of the Jews?
John 18:34Jesus answered him, "Do you say this of yourself, or did others tell it to you concerning me?"Jesus made answer, Do you say this of yourself, or did others say it about me?Jesus answered, Sayest thou this of thyself, or did others tell it thee concerning me?
John 18:35Pilate answered, "Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests delivered you to me. What have you done?"Pilate said, Am I a Jew? Your nation and the chief priests have given you into my hands: what have you done?Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? Thine own nation and the chief priests delivered thee unto me: what hast thou done?
John 18:36Jesus answered, "My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, then my servants would fight, that I wouldn't be delivered to the Jews. But now my kingdom is not from here."Jesus said in answer, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom was of this world, my disciples would have made a good fight to keep me out of the hands of the Jews: but my kingdom is not here.Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence.
John 18:37Pilate therefore said to him, "Are you a king then?" Jesus answered, "You say that I am a king. To this end have I been born, and to this end I have come into the world, that I should testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice."Then Pilate said to him, Are you then a king? Jesus made answer, You say that I am a king. For this purpose was I given birth, and for this purpose I came into the world, that I might give witness to what is true. Every lover of what is true gives ear to my voice.Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end have I been born, and to this end am I come into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.
John 18:38Pilate said to him, "What is truth?" When he had said this, he went out again to the Jews, and said to them, "I find no basis for a charge against him.Pilate said to him, True? what is true? Having said this he went out again to the Jews and said to them, I see no wrong in him.Pilate saith unto him, What is truth? And when he had said this, he went out again unto the Jews, and saith unto them, I find no crime in him.
John 18:39But you have a custom, that I should release to you one at the Passover. Therefore do you desire that I release to you the King of the Jews?"But every year you make a request to me to let a prisoner go free at the Passover. Is it your desire that I let the King of the Jews go free? But ye have a custom, that I should release unto you one at the passover: will ye therefore that I release unto you the King of the Jews?
John 18:40Then they all cried out again, saying, "Not this man, but Barabbas!" Now Barabbas was a robber. Then again they gave a loud cry, Not this man, but Barabbas. Now Barabbas was an outlaw. They cried out therefore again, saying, Not this man, but Barabbas. Now Barabbas was a robber.)
