John 19:1 | Then Pilate therefore took Jesus, and flogged him. | Then Pilate took Jesus and had him whipped with cords. | Then Pilate therefore took Jesus and scourged [him]. |
John 19:2 | The soldiers twisted thorns into a crown, and put it on his head, and dressed him in a purple garment. | And the men of the army made a crown of thorns and put it on his head, and they put a purple robe on him. | And the soldiers having plaited a crown of thorns put it on his head, and put a purple robe on him, |
John 19:3 | They said, "Hail, King of the Jews!" and they struck him with their hands. | And they kept coming and saying, Long life to the King of the Jews! And they gave him blows with their hands. | and came to him and said, Hail, king of the Jews! and gave him blows on the face. |
John 19:4 | Then Pilate went out again, and said to them, "Behold, I bring him out to you, that you may know that I find no basis for a charge against him." | And Pilate went out again and said to them, See, I let him come out to you to make it clear to you that I see no wrong in him. | And Pilate went out again and says to them, Lo, I bring him out to you, that ye may know that I find in him no fault whatever. |
John 19:5 | Jesus therefore came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple garment. Pilate said to them, "Behold, the man!" | Then Jesus came out with the crown of thorns and the purple robe. And Pilate said to them, Here is the man! | (Jesus therefore went forth without, wearing the crown of thorn, and the purple robe.) And he says to them, Behold the man! |
John 19:6 | When therefore the chief priests and the officers saw him, they cried out, saying, "Crucify! Crucify!" Pilate said to them, "Take him yourselves, and crucify him, for I find no basis for a charge against him." | So when the chief priests and the police saw him they gave a loud cry, To the cross! to the cross! Pilate said to them, Take him yourselves and put him on the cross: I see no crime in him. | When therefore the chief priests and the officers saw him they cried out saying, Crucify, crucify [him]. Pilate says to them, Take him ye and crucify [him], for I find no fault in him. |
John 19:7 | The Jews answered him, "We have a law, and by our law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God." | And the Jews made answer, We have a law, and by that law it is right for him to be put to death because he said he was the Son of God. | The Jews answered him, We have a law, and according to [our] law he ought to die, because he made himself Son of God. |
John 19:8 | When therefore Pilate heard this saying, he was more afraid. | When this saying came to Pilate's ears his fear became greater; | When Pilate therefore heard this word, he was the rather afraid, |
John 19:9 | He entered into the Praetorium again, and said to Jesus, "Where are you from?" But Jesus gave him no answer. | And he went again into the Praetorium and said to Jesus, Where do you come from? But Jesus gave him no answer. | and went into the praetorium again and says to Jesus, Whence art thou? But Jesus gave him no answer. |
John 19:10 | Pilate therefore said to him, "Aren't you speaking to me? Don't you know that I have power to release you, and have power to crucify you?" | Then Pilate said to him, You say nothing to me? is it not clear to you that I have power to let you go free and power to put you to death on the cross? | Pilate therefore says to him, Speakest thou not to *me*? Dost thou not know that I have authority to release thee and have authority to crucify thee? |
John 19:11 | Jesus answered, "You would have no power at all against me, unless it were given to you from above. Therefore he who delivered me to you has greater sin." | Jesus gave this answer: You would have no power at all over me if it was not given to you by God; so that he who gave me up to you has the greater sin. | Jesus answered, Thou hadst no authority whatever against me if it were not given to thee from above. On this account he that has delivered me up to thee has [the] greater sin. |
John 19:12 | At this, Pilate sought to release him, but the Jews cried out, saying, "If you release this man, you aren't Caesar's friend! Everyone who makes himself a king speaks against Caesar!" | Hearing this, Pilate had a desire to let him go free, but the Jews said in a loud voice, If you let this man go, you are not Caesar's friend: everyone who makes himself a king goes against Caesar. | From this time Pilate sought to release him; but the Jews cried out saying, If thou releasest this [man], thou art not a friend to Caesar. Every one making himself a king speaks against Caesar. |
John 19:13 | When Pilate therefore heard these words, he brought Jesus out, and sat down on the judgment seat at a place called "The Pavement," but in Hebrew, "Gabbatha." | So when these words came to Pilate's ear, he took Jesus out, seating himself in the judge's seat in a place named in Hebrew, Gabbatha, or the Stone Floor. | Pilate therefore, having heard these words, led Jesus out and sat down upon [the] judgment-seat, at a place called Pavement, but in Hebrew Gabbatha; |
John 19:14 | Now it was the Preparation of the Passover, at about the sixth hour. He said to the Jews, "Behold, your King!" | (It was the day when they made ready for the Passover; and it was about the sixth hour.) And he said to the Jews, There is your King! | (now it was [the] preparation of the passover; it was about the sixth hour;) and he says to the Jews, Behold your king! |
John 19:15 | They cried out, "Away with him! Away with him! Crucify him!" Pilate said to them, "Shall I crucify your King?" The chief priests answered, "We have no king but Caesar!" | Then they gave a loud cry, Away with him! away with him! to the cross! Pilate said to them, Am I to put your King to death on the cross? The chief priests said in answer, We have no king but Caesar. | But they cried out, Take [him] away, take [him] away, crucify him. Pilate says to them, Shall I crucify your king? The chief priests answered, We have no king but Caesar. |
John 19:16 | Then therefore he delivered him to them to be crucified. So they took Jesus and led him away. | So then he gave him up to them to be put to death on the cross. And they took Jesus away; | Then therefore he delivered him up to them, that he might be crucified; and they took Jesus and led him away. |
John 19:17 | He went out, bearing his cross, to the place called "The place of a skull," which is called in Hebrew, "Golgotha," | And he went out with his cross on him to the place which is named Dead Man's Head (in Hebrew, Golgotha): | And he went out, bearing his cross, to the place called [place] of a skull, which is called in Hebrew, Golgotha; |
John 19:18 | where they crucified him, and with him two others, on either side one, and Jesus in the middle. | Where they put him on the cross with two others, one on this side and one on that, and Jesus in the middle. | where they crucified him, and with him two others, [one] on this side, and [one] on that, and Jesus in the middle. |
John 19:19 | Pilate wrote a title also, and put it on the cross. There was written, "JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS." | And Pilate put on the cross a statement in writing. The writing was: JESUS THE NAZARENE, THE KING OF THE JEWS. | And Pilate wrote a title also and put it on the cross. But there was written: Jesus the Nazaraean, the King of the Jews. |
John 19:20 | Therefore many of the Jews read this title, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew, in Latin, and in Greek. | The writing was seen by a number of the Jews, for the place where Jesus was put to death on the cross was near the town; and the writing was in Hebrew and Latin and Greek. | This title therefore many of the Jews read, for the place of the city where Jesus was crucified was near; and it was written in Hebrew, Greek, Latin. |
John 19:21 | The chief priests of the Jews therefore said to Pilate, "Don't write, 'The King of the Jews,' but that, 'he said, I am King of the Jews.'" | Then the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, Do not put, The King of the Jews, but, He said, I am the King of the Jews. | The chief priests of the Jews therefore said to Pilate, Do not write, The king of the Jews, but that *he* said, I am king of the Jews. |
John 19:22 | Pilate answered, "What I have written, I have written." | But Pilate made answer, What I have put in writing will not be changed. | Pilate answered, What I have written, I have written. |
John 19:23 | Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his garments and made four parts, to every soldier a part; and also the coat. Now the coat was without seam, woven from the top throughout. | And when Jesus was nailed to the cross, the men of the army took his clothing, and made a division of it into four parts, to every man a part, and they took his coat: now the coat was without a join, made out of one bit of cloth. | The soldiers therefore, when they had crucified Jesus, took his clothes, and made four parts, to each soldier a part, and the body-coat; but the body-coat was seamless, woven through the whole from the top. |
John 19:24 | Then they said to one another, "Let's not tear it, but cast lots for it, whose it will be," that the scripture might be fulfilled, which says, "They parted my garments among them, For my cloak they cast lots." Therefore the soldiers did these things. | So they said among themselves, Let this not be cut up, but let us put it to the decision of chance and see who gets it. (They did this so that the Writings might come true, which say, They made a distribution of my clothing among them, and my coat they put to the decision of chance.) This was what the men of the army did. | They said therefore to one another, Let us not rend it, but let us cast lots for it, whose it shall be; that the scripture might be fulfilled which says, They parted my garments among themselves, and on my vesture they cast lots. The soldiers therefore did these things. |
John 19:25 | But there were standing by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. | Now by the side of the cross of Jesus were his mother, and his mother's sister Mary, the wife of Cleopas, and Mary Magdalene. | And by the cross of Jesus stood his mother, and the sister of his mother, Mary the [wife] of Clopas, and Mary of Magdala. |
John 19:26 | Therefore when Jesus saw his mother, and the disciple whom he loved standing there, he said to his mother, "Woman, behold your son!" | So when Jesus saw his mother and the disciple who was dear to him, he said to his mother, Mother, there is your son! | Jesus therefore, seeing his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, says to his mother, Woman, behold thy son. |
John 19:27 | Then he said to the disciple, "Behold, your mother!" From that hour, the disciple took her to his own home. | Then he said to the disciple, There is your mother! And from that hour the disciple took her to his house. | Then he says unto the disciple, Behold thy mother. And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home. |
John 19:28 | After this, Jesus, seeing that all things were now finished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, said, "I am thirsty." | After this, being conscious that all things had now been done so that the Writings might come true, Jesus said, Give me water. | After this, Jesus, knowing that all things were now finished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, says, I thirst. |
John 19:29 | Now a vessel full of vinegar was set there; so they put a sponge full of the vinegar on hyssop, and brought it to his mouth. | Now there was a vessel ready, full of bitter wine, and they put a sponge full of it on a stick and put it to his mouth. | There was a vessel therefore there full of vinegar, and having filled a sponge with vinegar, and putting hyssop round it, they put it up to his mouth. |
John 19:30 | When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, "It is finished." He bowed his head, and gave up his spirit. | So when Jesus had taken the wine he said, All is done. And with his head bent he gave up his spirit. | When therefore Jesus had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished; and having bowed his head, he delivered up his spirit. |
John 19:31 | Therefore the Jews, because it was the Preparation, so that the bodies wouldn't remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a special one), asked of Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away. | Now it was the day of getting ready for the Passover, and so that the bodies might not be on the cross on the Sabbath (because the day of that Sabbath was a great day), the Jews made a request to Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away. | The Jews therefore, that the bodies might not remain on the cross on the sabbath, for it was [the] preparation, (for the day of that sabbath was a great [day],) demanded of Pilate that their legs might be broken and they taken away. |
John 19:32 | Therefore the soldiers came, and broke the legs of the first, and of the other who was crucified with him; | So the men of the army came, and the legs of the first were broken and then of the other who was put to death on the cross with Jesus: | The soldiers therefore came and broke the legs of the first and of the other that had been crucified with him; |
John 19:33 | but when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was already dead, they didn't break his legs. | But when they came to Jesus, they saw that he was dead by this time, and so his legs were not broken; | but coming to Jesus, when they saw that he was already dead they did not break his legs, |
John 19:34 | However one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and immediately blood and water came out. | But one of the men made a wound in his side with a spear, and straight away there came out blood and water. | but one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and immediately there came out blood and water. |
John 19:35 | He who has seen has testified, and his testimony is true. He knows that he tells the truth, that you also may believe. | And he who saw it has given witness (and his witness is true; he is certain that what he says is true) so that you may have belief. | And he who saw it bears witness, and his witness is true, and he knows that he says true that ye also may believe. |
John 19:36 | For these things happened, that the scripture might be fulfilled, "A bone of him will not be broken." | These things came about so that the Writings might be true, No bone of his body will be broken. | For these things took place that the scripture might be fulfilled, Not a bone of him shall be broken. |
John 19:37 | Again another scripture says, "They will look on him whom they pierced." | And again another verse says, They will see him who was wounded by their spears. | And again another scripture says, They shall look on him whom they pierced. |
John 19:38 | After these things, Joseph of Arimathaea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, asked of Pilate that he might take away Jesus' body. Pilate gave him permission. He came therefore, and took away his body. | After these things, Joseph of Arimathaea, who was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, made a request to Pilate to let him take away the body of Jesus: and Pilate said he might do so. So he went and took away his body. | And after these things Joseph of Arimathaea, who was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly through fear of the Jews, demanded of Pilate that he might take the body of Jesus: and Pilate allowed it. He came therefore and took away the body of Jesus. |
John 19:39 | Nicodemus also came, he who at first came to Jesus by night, bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred Roman pounds. | And Nicodemus came (he who had first come to Jesus by night) with a roll of myrrh and aloes mixed, about a hundred pounds. | And Nicodemus also, who at first came to Jesus by night, came, bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pounds [weight]. |
John 19:40 | So they took Jesus' body, and bound it in linen cloths with the spices, as the custom of the Jews is to bury. | Then they took the body of Jesus, folding linen about it with the spices, as is the way of the Jews when they put the dead to rest. | They took therefore the body of Jesus and bound it up in linen with the spices, as it is the custom with the Jews to prepare for burial. |
John 19:41 | Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden. In the garden a new tomb in which no man had ever yet been laid. | Now there was a garden near the cross, and in the garden a new place for the dead in which no man had ever been put. | But there was in the place where he had been crucified a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had ever been laid. |
John 19:42 | Then because of the Jews' Preparation (for the tomb was near at hand) they laid Jesus there. | So they put Jesus there, because it was the Jews' day of getting ready for the Passover, and the place was near. | There therefore, on account of the preparation of the Jews, because the tomb was near, they laid Jesus. |
