Matthew 13:1 | On that day Jesus went out of the house, and sat by the seaside. | On that day Jesus went out of the house and was seated by the seaside. | That same day Jesus had left the house and was sitting on the shore of the Lake, |
Matthew 13:2 | Great multitudes gathered to him, so that he entered into a boat, and sat, and all the multitude stood on the beach. | And great numbers of people came together to him, so that he got into a boat; and the people took up their position by the sea. | when a vast multitude of people crowded round Him. He therefore went on board a boat and sat there, while all the people stood on the shore. |
Matthew 13:3 | He spoke to them many things in parables, saying, "Behold, the farmer went forth to sow. | And he gave them teaching in the form of a story, saying, A man went out to put seed in the earth; | He then spoke many things to them in figurative language. "The sower goes out," He said, "to sow. |
Matthew 13:4 | As he sowed, some seeds fell by the roadside, and the birds came and devoured them. | And while he did so, some seeds were dropped by the wayside, and the birds came and took them for food: | As he sows, some of the seed falls by the way-side, and the birds come and peck it up. |
Matthew 13:5 | Others fell on rocky ground, where they didn't have much soil, and immediately they sprang up, because they had no deepness of earth. | And some of the seed went among the stones, where it had not much earth, and straight away it came up because the earth was not deep: | Some falls on rocky ground, where it has but scanty soil. It quickly shows itself above ground, because it has no depth of earth; |
Matthew 13:6 | When the sun had risen, they were scorched. Because they had no root, they withered away. | And when the sun was high, it was burned; and because it had no root it became dry and dead. | but when the sun is risen, it is scorched by the heat, and through having no root it withers up. |
Matthew 13:7 | Others fell on thorns. The thorns grew up and choked them: | And some seeds went among thorns, and the thorns came up and they had no room for growth: | Some falls among the thorns; but the thorns spring up and stifle it. |
Matthew 13:8 | and others fell on good soil, and yielded fruit: some one hundred times, some sixty, and some thirty. | And some, falling on good earth, gave fruit, some a hundred, some sixty, some thirty times as much. | But a portion falls upon good ground, and gives a return, some a hundred for one, some sixty, some thirty. |
Matthew 13:9 | He who has ears to hear, let him hear." | He who has ears, let him give ear. | Listen, every one who has ears!" |
Matthew 13:10 | The disciples came, and said to him, "Why do you speak to them in parables?" | And the disciples came and said to him, Why do you say things to them in the form of stories? | (And His disciples came and asked Him, "Why do you speak to them in figurative language?" |
Matthew 13:11 | He answered them, "To you it is given to know the mysteries of the Kingdom of Heaven, but it is not given to them. | And he said to them in answer, To you is given the knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given. | "Because," He replied, "while to you it is granted to know the secrets of the Kingdom of the Heavens, to them it is not. |
Matthew 13:12 | For whoever has, to him will be given, and he will have abundance, but whoever doesn't have, from him will be taken away even that which he has. | Because whoever has, to him will be given, and he will have more; but from him who has not, even what he has will be taken away. | For whoever has, to him more shall be given, and he shall have abundance; but whoever has not, from him even what he has shall be taken away. |
Matthew 13:13 | Therefore I speak to them in parables, because seeing they don't see, and hearing, they don't hear, neither do they understand. | For this reason I put things into the form of stories; because they see without seeing, and give ear without hearing, and the sense is not clear to them. | I speak to them in figurative language for this reason, that while looking they do not see, and while hearing they neither hear nor understand. |
Matthew 13:14 | In them the prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled, which says, 'By hearing you will hear, and will in no way understand; Seeing you will see, and will in no way perceive: | And for them the words of Isaiah have come true, Though you give ear, you will not get knowledge; and seeing, you will see, but the sense will not be clear to you: | And in regard to them the prophecy of Isaiah is receiving signal fulfilment: "`You will hear and hear and by no means understand, and you will look and look and by no means see. |
Matthew 13:15 | For this people's heart has grown callous, Their ears are dull of hearing, Their eyes they have closed; Or else perhaps they might perceive with their eyes, Hear with their ears, Understand with their heart, And should turn again; And I would heal them.' | For the heart of this people has become fat and their ears are slow in hearing and their eyes are shut; for fear that they might see with their eyes and give hearing with their ears and become wise in their hearts and be turned again to me, so that I might make them well. | For this people's mind is stupefied, their hearing has become dull, and their eyes they have closed; to prevent their ever seeing with their eyes, or hearing with their ears, or understanding with their minds, and turning back, so that I might heal them.' |
Matthew 13:16 | "But blessed are your eyes, for they see; and your ears, for they hear. | But a blessing be on your eyes, because they see; and on your ears, because they are open. | "But as for you, blessed are your eyes, for they see, and your ears, for they hear. |
Matthew 13:17 | For most assuredly I tell you that many prophets and righteous men desired to see the things which you see, and didn't see them; and to hear the things which you hear, and didn't hear them. | For truly, I say to you that prophets and upright men had a desire to see the things which you see, and saw them not; and to have knowledge of the words which have come to your ears, and they had it not. | For I solemnly tell you that many Prophets and holy men have longed to see the sights you see, and have not seen them, and to hear the words you hear, and have not heard them. |
Matthew 13:18 | "Hear, then, the parable of the farmer. | Give ear, then, to the story of the man who put the seed in the earth. | "To you then I will explain the parable of the Sower. |
Matthew 13:19 | When anyone hears the word of the kingdom, and doesn't understand it, the evil one comes, and snatches away that which has been sown in his heart. This is what was sown by the roadside. | When the word of the kingdom comes to anyone, and the sense of it is not clear to him, then the Evil One comes, and quickly takes away that which was put in his heart. He is the seed dropped by the wayside. | When a man hears the Message concerning the Kingdom and does not understand it, the Evil one comes and catches away what has been sown in his heart. This is he who has received the seed by the road-side. |
Matthew 13:20 | What was sown on the rocky places, this is he who hears the word, and immediately with joy receives it; | And that which went on the stones, this is he who, hearing the word, straight away takes it with joy; | He who has received the seed on the rocky ground is the man who hears the Message and immediately receives it with joy. |
Matthew 13:21 | yet he has no root in himself, but endures for a while. When oppression or persecution arises because of the word, immediately he stumbles. | But having no root in himself, he goes on for a time; and when trouble comes or pain, because of the word, he quickly becomes full of doubts. | It has struck no root, however, within him. He continues for a time, but when suffering comes, or persecution, because of the Message, he at once stumbles and falls. |
Matthew 13:22 | What was sown among the thorns, this is he who hears the word, but the cares of this world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and he becomes unfruitful. | And that which was dropped among the thorns, this is he who has the word; and the cares of this life, and the deceits of wealth, put a stop to the growth of the word and it gives no fruit. | He who has received the seed among the thorns is the man who hears the Message, but the cares of the present age and the delusions of riches quite stifle the Message, and it becomes unfruitful. |
Matthew 13:23 | What was sown on the good ground, this is he who hears the word, and understands it, who most assuredly bears fruit, and brings forth, some one hundred times, some sixty, some thirty." | And the seed which was put in good earth, this is he who gives ear to the word, and gets the sense of it; who gives fruit, some a hundred, some sixty, some thirty times as much. | But he who has received the seed on good ground is he who hears and understands. Such hearers give a return, and yield one a hundred for one, another sixty, another thirty.") |
Matthew 13:24 | He set another parable before them, saying, "The Kingdom of Heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field, | And he gave them another story, saying, The kingdom of heaven is like a man who put good seed in his field: | Another parable He put before them. "The Kingdom of the Heavens," He said, "may be compared to a man who has sown good seed in his field, |
Matthew 13:25 | but while people slept, his enemy came and sowed darnel also among the wheat, and went away. | But while men were sleeping, one who had hate for him came and put evil seeds among the grain, and went away. | but during the night his enemy comes, and over the first seed he sows darnel among the wheat, and goes away. |
Matthew 13:26 | But when the blade sprang up and brought forth fruit, then the darnel appeared also. | But when the green stem came up and gave fruit, the evil plants were seen at the same time. | But when the blade shoots up and the grain is formed, then appears the darnel also. |
Matthew 13:27 | The servants of the householder came and said to him, 'Sir, didn't you sow good seed in your field? Where did this darnel come from?' | And the servants of the master of the house came and said to him, Sir, did you not put good seed in your field? how then has it evil plants? | "So the farmer's men come and ask him, "`Sir, was it not good seed that you sowed on your land? Where then does the darnel come from?' |
Matthew 13:28 | He said to them, 'An enemy has done this.' The servants asked him, 'Do you want us to go and gather them up?' | And he said, Someone has done this in hate. And the servants say to him, Is it your pleasure that we go and take them up? | "`Some enemy has done this,' he said. "`Shall we go, and collect it?' the men inquire. |
Matthew 13:29 | But he said, 'No, lest perhaps while you gather up the darnel, you root up the wheat with them. | But he says, No, for fear that by chance while you take up the evil plants, you may be rooting up the grain with them. | "`No,' he replied, `for fear that while collecting the darnel you should at the same time root up the wheat with it. |
Matthew 13:30 | Let both grow together until the harvest, and in the harvest time I will tell the reapers, "First, gather up the darnel, and bind them in bundles to burn them; but gather the wheat into my barn."'" | Let them come up together till the getting in of the grain; and then I will say to the workers, Take up first the evil plants, and put them together for burning: but put the grain into my store-house. | Leave both to grow together until the harvest, and at harvest-time I will direct the reapers, Collect the darnel first, and make it up into bundles to burn it, but bring all the wheat into my barn.'" |
Matthew 13:31 | He set another parable before them, saying, "The Kingdom of Heaven is like a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and sowed in his field; | He put another story before them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is like a grain of mustard seed which a man took and put in his field: | Another parable He put before them. "The Kingdom of the Heavens," He said, "is like a mustard-seed, which a man takes and sows in his ground. |
Matthew 13:32 | which indeed is smaller than all seeds. But when it is grown, it is greater than the herbs, and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and lodge in its branches." | Which is smaller than all seeds; but when it has come up it is greater than the plants, and becomes a tree, so that the birds of heaven come and make their resting-places in its branches. | It is the smallest of all seeds, and yet when full-grown it is larger than any herb and forms a tree, so that the birds come and build in its branches." |
Matthew 13:33 | He spoke another parable to them. "The Kingdom of Heaven is like yeast, which a woman took, and hid in three measures of meal, until it was all leavened." | Another story he gave to them: The kingdom of heaven is like leaven, which a woman took, and put in three measures of meal, till it was all leavened. | Another parable He spoke to them. "The Kingdom of the Heavens," He said, "is like yeast which a woman takes and buries in a bushel of flour, for it to work there till the whole mass has risen." |
Matthew 13:34 | Jesus spoke all these things in parables to the multitudes; and without a parable, he didn't speak to them, | All these things Jesus said to the people in the form of stories; and without a story he said nothing to them: | All this Jesus spoke to the people in figurative language, and except in figurative language He spoke nothing to them, |
Matthew 13:35 | that it might be fulfilled which was spoken through the prophet, saying, "I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter things hidden from the foundation of the world." | That it might come true which was said by the prophet, Opening my mouth, I will give out stories; I will give knowledge of things kept secret from before all time. | in fulfilment of the saying of the Prophet, "I will open my mouth in figurative language, I will utter things kept hidden since the creation of all things." |
Matthew 13:36 | Then Jesus sent the multitudes away, and went into the house. His disciples came to him, saying, "Explain to us the parable of the darnel of the field." | Then he went away from the people, and went into the house; and his disciples came to him, saying, Make clear to us the story of the evil plants in the field. | When He had dismissed the people and had returned to the house, His disciples came to Him with the request, "Explain to us the parable of the darnel sown in the field." |
Matthew 13:37 | He answered them, "He who sows the good seed is the Son of Man, | And he made answer and said, He who puts the good seed in the earth is the Son of man; | "The sower of the good seed," He replied, "is the Son of Man; |
Matthew 13:38 | the field is the world; and the good seed, these are the sons of the kingdom; and the darnel are the sons of the evil one. | And the field is the world; and the good seed is the sons of the kingdom; and the evil seeds are the sons of the Evil One; | the field is the world; the good seed these are the sons of the Kingdom; the darnel, the sons of the Evil one. |
Matthew 13:39 | The enemy who sowed them is the devil. The harvest is the end of the age, and the reapers are angels. | And he who put them in the earth is Satan; and the getting in of the grain is the end of the world; and those who get it in are the angels. | The enemy who sows the darnel is *the Devil*; the harvest is the Close of the Age; the reapers are the angels. |
Matthew 13:40 | As therefore the darnel is gathered up and burned with fire; so will it be in the end of this age. | As then the evil plants are got together and burned with fire, so will it be in the end of the world. | As then the darnel is collected together and burnt up with fire, so will it be at the Close of the Age. |
Matthew 13:41 | The Son of Man will send forth his angels, and they will gather out of his kingdom all things that cause stumbling, and those who do iniquity, | The Son of man will send out his angels, and they will take out of his kingdom everything which is a cause of error, and all those who do wrong, | The Son of Man will commission His angels, and they will gather out of His Kingdom all causes of sin and all who violate His laws; |
Matthew 13:42 | and will cast them into the furnace of fire. There will be weeping and the gnashing of teeth. | And will put them into the fire; there will be weeping and cries of sorrow. | and these they will throw into the fiery furnace. There will be the weeping aloud and the gnashing of teeth. |
Matthew 13:43 | Then the righteous will shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. He who has ears to hear, let him hear. | Then will the upright be shining as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. He who has ears, let him give ear. | Then will the righteous shine out like the sun in their Father's Kingdom. Listen, every one who has ears! |
Matthew 13:44 | "The Kingdom of Heaven is like a treasure hidden in the field, which a man found, and hid. In his joy, he goes and sells all that he has, and buys that field. | The kingdom of heaven is like a secret store of wealth in a field, which a man came across and put back again; and in his joy he goes and gives all he has, to get that field. | "The Kingdom of the Heavens is like treasure buried in the open country, which a man finds, but buries again, and, in his joy about it, goes and sells all he has and buys that piece of ground. |
Matthew 13:45 | "Again, the Kingdom of Heaven is like a man who is a merchant seeking fine pearls, | Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a trader searching for beautiful jewels. | "Again the Kingdom of the Heavens is like a jewel merchant who is in quest of choice pearls. |
Matthew 13:46 | who having found one pearl of great price, he went and sold all that he had, and bought it. | And having come across one jewel of great price, he went and gave all he had in exchange for it. | He finds one most costly pearl; he goes away; and though it costs all he has, he buys it. |
Matthew 13:47 | "Again, the Kingdom of Heaven is like a dragnet, that was cast into the sea, and gathered some fish of every kind, | Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net, which was put into the sea and took in every sort of fish: | "Again the Kingdom of the Heavens is like a draw-net let down into the sea, which encloses fish of all sorts. |
Matthew 13:48 | which, when it was filled, they drew up on the beach. They sat down, and gathered the good into containers, but the bad they threw away. | When it was full, they took it up on the sands; and seated there they put the good into vessels, but the bad they put away. | When full, they haul it up on the beach, and sit down and collect the good fish in baskets, while the worthless they throw away. |
Matthew 13:49 | So will it be in the end of the world. The angels will come forth, and separate the wicked from among the righteous, | So will it be in the end of the world: the angels will come and take out the bad from the good, | So will it be at the Close of the Age. The angels will go forth and separate the wicked from among the righteous, |
Matthew 13:50 | and will cast them into the furnace of fire. There will be the weeping and the gnashing of teeth." | And will put them into the fire: there will be weeping and cries of sorrow. | and will throw them into the fiery furnace. There will be the weeping aloud and the gnashing of teeth." |
Matthew 13:51 | Jesus said to them, "Have you understood all these things?" They answered him, "Yes, Lord." | Are all these things now clear to you? They say to him, Yes. | "Have you understood all this?" He asked. "Yes," they said. |
Matthew 13:52 | He said to them, "Therefore, every scribe who has been made a disciple to the Kingdom of Heaven is like a man who is a householder, who brings forth out of his treasure new and old things." | And he said to them, For this reason every scribe who has become a disciple of the kingdom of heaven is like the owner of a house, who gives out from his store things new and old. | "Therefore," He said, "remember that every Scribe well trained for the Kingdom of the Heavens is like a householder who brings out of his storehouse new things and old." |
Matthew 13:53 | It happened, when Jesus had finished these parables, he departed from there. | And when Jesus had come to the end of these stories he went away from there. | Jesus concluded this series of parables and then departed. |
Matthew 13:54 | Coming into his own country, he taught them in their synagogue, so much that they were astonished, and said, "Where did this man get this wisdom, and these mighty works? | And coming into his country, he gave them teaching in their Synagogue, so that they were greatly surprised and said, Where did this man get this wisdom and these works of power? | And He came into His own country and proceeded to teach in their synagogue, so that they were filled with astonishment and exclaimed, "Where did he obtain such wisdom, and these wondrous powers? |
Matthew 13:55 | Isn't this the carpenter's son? Isn't his mother called Mary, and his brothers, James, Joses, Simon, and Judas? | Is not this the woodworker's son? is not his mother named Mary? and his brothers James and Joseph and Simon and Judas? | Is not this the carpenter's son? Is not his mother called Mary? And are not his brothers, James, Joseph, Simon and Judah? |
Matthew 13:56 | Aren't all of his sisters with us? Where, then did this man get all of these things?" | And his sisters, are they not all with us? from where, then, has he all these things? | And his sisters are they not all living here among us? Where then did he get all this?" |
Matthew 13:57 | They were offended by him. But Jesus said to them, "A prophet is not without honor, except in his own country, and in his own house." | And they were bitter against him. But Jesus said to them, A prophet is nowhere without honour but in his country and among his family. | So they turned angrily away from Him. But Jesus said to them, "There is no prophet left without honour except in his own country and among his own family." |
Matthew 13:58 | He didn't do many mighty works there because of their unbelief. | And the works of power which he did there were small in number because they had no faith. | And He performed but few mighty deeds there because of their want of faith. |
