Hebrews 7:1For this Melchizedek, king of Salem, priest of God Most High, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings and blessed him,For this Melchisedec, King of Salem, priest of the most high God, who met Abraham returning from smiting the kings, and blessed him;For this Melchizedek, the king of Salem, a priest of the Most High God, who gave Abraham his blessing, meeting him when he came back after putting the kings to death,
Hebrews 7:2to whom also Abraham divided a tenth part of all (being first, by interpretation, King of righteousness, and then also King of Salem, which is King of peace;to whom Abraham gave also the tenth portion of all; first being interpreted King of righteousness, and then also King of Salem, which is King of peace;And to whom Abraham gave a tenth part of everything which he had, being first named King of righteousness, and then in addition, King of Salem, that is to say, King of peace;
Hebrews 7:3without father, without mother, without genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but made like the Son of God), remains a priest continually.without father, without mother, without genealogy; having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but assimilated to the Son of God, abides a priest continually.Being without father or mother, or family, having no birth or end to his life, being made like the Son of God, is a priest for ever.
Hebrews 7:4Now consider how great this man was, to whom even Abraham, the patriarch, gave a tenth out of the best spoils.Now consider how great this [personage] was, to whom [even] the patriarch Abraham gave a tenth out of the spoils.Now see how great this man was, to whom our father Abraham gave a tenth part of what he had got in the fight.
Hebrews 7:5They indeed of the sons of Levi who receive the priest's office have a commandment to take tithes of the people according to the law, that is, of their brothers, though these have come out of the loins of Abraham,And they indeed from among the sons of Levi, who receive the priesthood, have commandment to take tithes from the people according to the law, that is from their brethren, though these are come out of the loins of Abraham:And it is true that by the law, those of the sons of Levi who have the position of priests may take a tenth part of the people's goods; that is to say, they take it from their brothers though these are the sons of Abraham.
Hebrews 7:6but he whose genealogy is not counted from them has taken tithes of Abraham, and has blessed him who has the promises.but he who has no genealogy from them has tithed Abraham, and blessed him who had the promises.But this man, who was not of their family, took the tenth from Abraham, and gave a blessing to him to whom God had given his undertaking.
Hebrews 7:7But without any dispute the less is blessed of the better.But beyond all gainsaying, the inferior is blessed by the better.But there is no doubt that the less gets his blessing from the greater.
Hebrews 7:8Here men who die receive tithes, but there one, of whom it is testified that he lives.And here dying men receive tithes; but there [one] of whom the witness is that he lives;Now at the present time, men over whom death has power take the tenth; but then it was taken by one of whom it is witnessed that he is living.
Hebrews 7:9So to say, through Abraham even Levi, who receives tithes, has paid tithes,and, so to speak, through Abraham, Levi also, who received tithes, has been made to pay tithes.And we may say that in Abraham, even Levi, who has a right to take the tenth part, gave it;
Hebrews 7:10for he was yet in the loins of his father when Melchizedek met him.For he was yet in the loins of his father when Melchisedec met him.Because he was still in his father's body when Melchizedek came to him.
Hebrews 7:11Now if there was perfection through the Levitical priesthood (for under it have the people received the law), what further need was there for another priest to arise after the order of Melchizedek, and not be called after the order of Aaron?If indeed then perfection were by the Levitical priesthood, for the people had their law given to them in connexion with *it*, what need [was there] still that a different priest should arise according to the order of Melchisedec, and not be named after the order of Aaron?Now if it was possible for things to be made complete through the priests of the house of Levi (for the law was given to the people in connection with them), what need was there for another priest who was of the order of Melchizedek and not of the order of Aaron?
Hebrews 7:12For the priesthood being changed, there is of necessity a change made also of the law.For, the priesthood being changed, there takes place of necessity a change of law also.Because if the priests are changed, it is necessary to make a change in the law.
Hebrews 7:13For he of whom these things are said belongs to another tribe, from which no man has given attendance at the altar.For he, of whom these things are said, belongs to a different tribe, of which no one has [ever] been attached to the service of the altar.For he of whom these things are said comes of another tribe, of which no man has ever made offerings at the altar.
Hebrews 7:14For it is evident that our Lord has sprung out of Judah, as to which tribe Moses spoke nothing concerning priesthood.For it is clear that our Lord has sprung out of Juda, as to which tribe Moses spake nothing as to priests.Because it is clear that our Lord comes out of Judah, and Moses said nothing about priests from that tribe.
Hebrews 7:15This is yet more abundantly evident, if after the likeness of Melchizedek there arises another priest,And it is yet more abundantly evident, since a different priest arises according to the similitude of Melchisedec,And this is even more clear if a second priest has come up who is like Melchizedek,
Hebrews 7:16who has been made, not after the law of a fleshly commandment, but after the power of an endless life:who has been constituted not according to law of fleshly commandment, but according to power of indissoluble life.That is to say, not made by a law based on the flesh, but by the power of a life without end:
Hebrews 7:17for it is testified, "You are a priest forever, According to the order of Melchizedek."For it is borne witness, *Thou* art a priest for ever according to the order of Melchisedec.For it has been witnessed of him, You are a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek.
Hebrews 7:18For there is an annulling of a foregoing commandment because of its weakness and uselessnessFor there is a setting aside of the commandment going before for its weakness and unprofitableness,So the law which went before is put on one side, because it was feeble and without profit.
Hebrews 7:19(for the law made nothing perfect), and a bringing in thereupon of a better hope, through which we draw near to God.(for the law perfected nothing,) and the introduction of a better hope by which we draw nigh to God.(Because the law made nothing complete), and in its place there is a better hope, through which we come near to God.
Hebrews 7:20Inasmuch as it is not without the taking of an oath,And by how much [it was] not without the swearing of an oath;And as this is not without the taking of an oath
Hebrews 7:21for they indeed have been made priests without an oath; but he with an oath by him that says of him, "The Lord swore and will not change his mind, 'You are a priest forever, According to the order of Melchizedek'".(for they are become priests without the swearing of an oath, but he with the swearing of an oath, by him who said, as to him, The Lord has sworn, and will not repent [of it], *Thou* [art] priest for ever [according to the order of Melchisedec];)(For those were made priests without an oath, but this one was made a priest with an oath by him who says of him, The Lord gave his oath, which he will not take back, that you are a priest for ever);
Hebrews 7:22By so much has Jesus become the collateral of a better covenant.by so much Jesus became surety of a better covenant.By so much is it a better agreement which we have through Jesus.
Hebrews 7:23Many, indeed, have been made priests, because they are hindered from continuing by death.And they have been many priests, on account of being hindered from continuing by death;And it is true that there have been a great number of those priests, because death does not let them go on for ever;
Hebrews 7:24But he, because he lives forever, has his priesthood unchangeable.but he, because of his continuing for ever, has the priesthood unchangeable.But this priest, because his life goes on for ever, is unchanging.
Hebrews 7:25Therefore he is also able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, seeing he ever lives to make intercession for them.Whence also he is able to save completely those who approach by him to God, always living to intercede for them.So that he is fully able to be the saviour of all who come to God through him, because he is ever living to make prayer to God for them.
Hebrews 7:26For such a high priest was fitting for us: holy, guiltless, undefiled, separated from sinners, and made higher than the heavens;For such a high priest became us, holy, harmless, undefiled, separated from sinners, and become higher than the heavens:It was right for us to have such a high priest, one who is holy and without evil, doing no wrong, having no part with sinners, and made higher than the heavens:
Hebrews 7:27who doesn't need, like those high priests, to daily offer up sacrifices, first for his own sins, and then for the sins of the people. For this he did once for all, when he offered up himself.who has not day by day need, as the high priests, first to offer up sacrifices for his own sins, then [for] those of the people; for this he did once for all [in] having offered up himself.Who has no need to make offerings for sins every day, like those high priests, first for himself, and then for the people; because he did this once and for ever when he made an offering of himself.
Hebrews 7:28For the law appoints men high priests, having infirmity; but the word of the oath, which was after the law, appoints a Son, perfected forevermore.For the law constitutes men high priests, having infirmity; but the word of the swearing of the oath which [is] after the law, a Son perfected for ever.The law makes high priests of men who are feeble; but the word of the oath, which was made after the law, gives that position to a Son, in whom all good is for ever complete.
