Joel 1:1The Word of Yahweh that came to Joel, the son of Pethuel. The word of Jehovah that came to Joel the son of Pethuel. The word of the Lord that came to Joel the son of Phatuel.
Joel 1:2Hear this, you elders, And listen, all you inhabitants of the land. Has this ever happened in your days, Or in the days of your fathers?Hear this, ye old men, and give ear, all ye inhabitants of the land. Hath this been in your days, or even in the days of your fathers?Hear this, ye old men, and give ear, all ye inhabitants of the land: did this ever happen in your days, or in the days of your fathers?
Joel 1:3Tell your children about it, And have your children tell their children, And their children, another generation.Tell your children of it, and [let] your children [tell] their children, and their children another generation:Tell ye of this to your children, and let your children tell their children, and their children to another generation.
Joel 1:4What the swarming locust has left, the great locust has eaten. What the great locust has left, the grasshopper has eaten. What the grasshopper has left, the caterpillar has eaten.that which the palmer-worm hath left hath the locust eaten; and that which the locust hath left hath the cankerworm eaten; and that which the cankerworm hath left hath the caterpillar eaten. That which the palmerworm hath left, the locust hath eaten: and that which the locust hath left, the bruchus hath eaten: and that which the bruchus hath left, the mildew hath destroyed.
Joel 1:5Wake up, you drunkards, and weep! Wail, all you drinkers of wine, because of the sweet wine; For it is cut off from your mouth.Awake, ye drunkards, and weep; and howl, all ye drinkers of wine, because of the new wine: for it is cut off from your mouth.Awake, ye that are drunk, and weep, and mourn all ye that take delight in drinking sweet wine: for it is cut off from your mouth.
Joel 1:6For a nation has come up on my land, strong, and without number. His teeth are the teeth of a lion, And he has the fangs of a lioness. For a nation is come up upon my land, strong and without number: his teeth are the teeth of a lion, and he hath the cheek teeth of a lioness. For a nation is come up upon my land, strong and without number: his teeth are like the teeth of a lion: and his cheek teeth as of a lion's whelp.
Joel 1:7He has laid my vine waste, And stripped my fig tree. He has stripped its bark, and thrown it away. Its branches are made white. He hath made my vine a desolation, and barked my fig-tree; he hath made it clean bare, and cast it away: its branches are made white. He hath laid my vineyard waste, and hath pilled off the bark of my fig tree: he hath stripped it bare, and cast it away; the branches thereof are made white.
Joel 1:8Mourn like a virgin dressed in sackcloth for the husband of her youth!Wail like a virgin girded with sackcloth for the husband of her youth.Lament like a virgin girded with sackcloth for the husband of her youth.
Joel 1:9The meal offering and the drink offering are cut off from Yahweh's house. The priests, Yahweh's ministers, mourn. The oblation and the drink-offering are cut off from the house of Jehovah; the priests, Jehovah's ministers, mourn.Sacrifice and libation is cut off from the house of the Lord: the priests, the Lord's ministers, have mourned:
Joel 1:10The field is laid waste. The land mourns, for the grain is destroyed, The new wine has dried up, And the oil languishes. The field is laid waste, the land mourneth; for the corn is wasted, the new wine is dried up, the oil languisheth. The country is destroyed, the ground hath mourned: for the corn is wasted, the wine is confounded, the oil hath languished.
Joel 1:11Be confounded, you farmers! Wail, you vineyard keepers; For the wheat and for the barley; For the harvest of the field has perished.Be ashamed, ye husbandmen; howl, ye vinedressers, for the wheat and for the barley: because the harvest of the field hath perished. The husbandmen are ashamed, the vinedressers have howled for the wheat, and for the barley, because the harvest of the field is perished.
Joel 1:12The vine has dried up, and the fig tree withered; the pomegranate tree, the palm tree also, and the apple tree, Even all of the trees of the field are withered; For joy has withered away from the sons of men.The vine is dried up, and the fig-tree languisheth; the pomegranate-tree, the palm also and the apple-tree; all the trees of the field are withered, yea, joy is withered away from the children of men.The vineyard is confounded, and the fig tree hath languished: the pomegranate tree, and the palm tree, and the apple tree, and all the trees of the field are withered: because joy is withdrawn from the children of men.
Joel 1:13Put on sackcloth and mourn, you priests! Wail, you ministers of the altar. Come, lie all night in sackcloth, you ministers of my God, For the meal offering and the drink offering are withheld from your God's house.Gird yourselves, and lament, ye priests; howl, ministers of the altar; come, lie all night in sackcloth, ye ministers of my God: for the oblation and the drink-offering are withholden from the house of your God.Gird yourselves, and lament, O ye priests, howl, ye ministers of the altars: go in, lie in sackcloth, ye ministers of my God: because sacrifice and libation is cut off from the house of your God.
Joel 1:14Sanctify a fast. Call a solemn assembly. Gather the elders, And all the inhabitants of the land, to the house of Yahweh, your God, And cry to Yahweh.Hallow a fast, proclaim a solemn assembly, gather the elders, [and] all the inhabitants of the land to the house of Jehovah your God, and cry unto Jehovah.Sanctify ye a fast, call an assembly; gather together the ancients, all the inhabitants of the land into the house of your God: and cry ye to the Lord:
Joel 1:15Alas for the day! For the day of Yahweh is at hand, And it will come as destruction from the Almighty.Alas for the day! for the day of Jehovah is at hand, and as destruction from the Almighty shall it come.Ah, ah, ah, for the day: because the day of the Lord is at hand, and it shall come like destruction from the mighty.
Joel 1:16Isn't the food cut off before our eyes; Joy and gladness from the house of our God?Is not the food cut off before our eyes, joy and gladness from the house of our God?Is not your food cut off before your eyes, joy and gladness from the house of our God?
Joel 1:17The seeds rot under their clods. The granaries are laid desolate. The barns are broken down, for the grain has withered. The seeds are rotten under their clods, the granaries are laid desolate, the barns are broken down; for the corn is withered. The beasts have rotted in their dung, the barns are destroyed, the storehouses are broken down: because the corn is confounded.
Joel 1:18How the animals groan! The herds of cattle are perplexed, because they have no pasture. Yes, the flocks of sheep are made desolate. How do the beasts groan! The herds of cattle are bewildered, for they have no pasture; the flocks of sheep also are in suffering. Why did the beast groan, why did the herds of cattle low? because there is no pasture for them: yea, and the flocks of sheep are perished.
Joel 1:19Yahweh, I cry to you, For the fire has devoured the pastures of the wilderness, And the flame has burned all the trees of the field. To thee, Jehovah, do I cry; for the fire hath devoured the pastures of the wilderness, and the flame hath burned up all the trees of the field. To thee, 0 Lord, will I cry: because fire hath devoured the beautiful places of the wilderness, and the flame hath burnt all the trees of the country.
Joel 1:20Yes, the animals of the field pant to you, For the water brooks have dried up, And the fire has devoured the pastures of the wilderness. The beasts of the field also cry unto thee; for the water-courses are dried, and the fire hath devoured the pastures of the wilderness.Yea and the beasts of the field have looked up to thee, as a garden bed that thirsteth after rain, for the springs of waters are dried up, and fire hath devoured the beautiful places of the wilderness.
