Acts 17:4Some of them were persuaded, and joined Paul and Silas, of the devout Greeks a great multitude, and not a few of the chief women.And some of them believed, and joined themselves to Paul and Silas, and of the Greeks who worshipped, a great multitude, and of the chief women not a few.And some of them believed, and consorted with Paul and Silas: and of the devout Greeks a great multitude, and of the chief women not a few.
Acts 17:5But the disobedient Jews gathered some wicked men from the marketplace, and gathering a crowd, set the city in an uproar. Assaulting the house of Jason, they sought to bring them forth to the people.But the Jews having been stirred up to jealousy, and taken to [themselves] certain wicked men of the lowest rabble, and having got a crowd together, set the city in confusion; and having beset the house of Jason sought to bring them out to the people;But the Jews who believed not, moved with envy, took to them certain vile fellows of the baser sort, and gathered a company, and set all the city in an uproar, and assaulted the house of Jason, and sought to bring them out to the people.
Acts 17:6When they didn't find them, they dragged Jason and certain brothers before the rulers of the city, crying, "These who have turned the world upside down have come here also,and not having found them, dragged Jason and certain brethren before the politarchs, crying out, These [men] that have set the world in tumult, are come here also,And when they found them not, they drew Jason and certain brethren to the rulers of the city, crying, These that have turned the world upside down, have come hither also;
Acts 17:7whom Jason has received. These all act contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is another king, Jesus!"whom Jason has received; and these all do contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying, that there is another king, Jesus.Whom Jason hath received: and these all do contrary to the decrees of Cesar, saying, That there is another king, one Jesus.
Acts 17:8The multitude and the rulers of the city were troubled when they heard these things.And they troubled the crowd and the politarchs when they heard these things.And they troubled the people, and the rulers of the city, when they heard these things.
Acts 17:9When they had taken security from Jason and the rest, they let them go.And having taken security of Jason and the rest, they let them go.And when they had taken security of Jason and of the other, they let them go.
Acts 17:10The brothers immediately sent Paul and Silas away by night to Beroea. When they arrived, they went into the Jewish synagogue.But the brethren immediately sent away, in the night, Paul and Silas to Berea; who, being arrived, went away into the synagogue of the Jews.And the brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas by night to Berea: who coming thither, went into the synagogue of the Jews.
Acts 17:11Now these were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of the mind, examining the Scriptures daily, whether these things were so.And these were more noble than those in Thessalonica, receiving the word with all readiness of mind, daily searching the scriptures if these things were so.These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.
Acts 17:12Many of them therefore believed; also of the Greek women of honorable estate, and not a few men.Therefore many from among them believed, and of Grecian women of the upper classes and men not a few.Therefore many of them believed; also of honorable women who were Greeks, and of men not a few.
Acts 17:13But when the Jews of Thessalonica had knowledge that the word of God was proclaimed by Paul at Beroea also, they came there likewise, agitating the multitudes.But when the Jews from Thessalonica knew that the word of God was announced in Berea also by Paul, they came there also, stirring up the crowds.But when the Jews of Thessalonica had knowledge that the word of God was preached by Paul at Berea, they came thither also, and stirred up the people.
Acts 17:14Then the brothers immediately sent forth Paul to go as far as to the sea, and Silas and Timothy still stayed there.And then immediately the brethren sent away Paul to go as to the sea; but Silas and Timotheus abode there.And then immediately the brethren sent away Paul, to go as it were to the sea: but Silas and Timothy abode there still.
Acts 17:15But those who escorted Paul brought him as far as Athens. Receiving a commandment to Silas and Timothy that they should come to him with all speed, they departed.But they that conducted Paul brought him as far as Athens; and, having received a commandment to Silas and Timotheus, that they should come to him as quickly as possible, they departed.And they that conducted Paul brought him to Athens: and receiving a commandment to Silas and Timothy to come to him with all speed, they departed.
Acts 17:16Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was provoked within him as he saw the city full of idols.But in Athens, while Paul was waiting for them, his spirit was painfully excited in him seeing the city given up to idolatry.Now, while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was stirred in him, when he saw the city wholly given to idolatry.
Acts 17:17So he reasoned in the synagogue with Jews and the devout persons, and in the marketplace every day with those who met him.He reasoned therefore in the synagogue with the Jews, and those who worshipped, and in the market-place every day with those he met with.Therefore he disputed in the synagogue with the Jews, and with the devout persons, and in the market daily with them that met with him.
Acts 17:18Some of the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers also encountered him. Some said, "What does this babbler want to say?" Others said, "He seems to be advocating foreign demons," because he preached Jesus and the resurrection.But some also of the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers attacked him. And some said, What would this chatterer say? and some, He seems to be an announcer of foreign demons, because he announced the glad tidings of Jesus and the resurrection [to them].Then certain philosophers of the Epicureans, and of the Stoics, encountered him. And some said, What will this babbler say? some others, He seemeth to be a setter-forth of strange gods: because he preached to them Jesus, and the resurrection.
Acts 17:19They took hold of him, and brought him to the Areopagus, saying, "May we know what this new teaching is, which is spoken by you?And having taken hold on him they brought [him] to Areopagus, saying, Might we know what this new doctrine which is spoken by thee [is]?And they took him, and brought him to Areopagus, saying, May we know what this new doctrine is, of which thou speakest?
Acts 17:20For you bring certain strange things to our ears. We want to know therefore what these things mean."For thou bringest certain strange things to our ears. We wish therefore to know what these things may mean.For thou bringest certain strange things to our ears; we would know therefore what these things mean.
Acts 17:21Now all the Athenians and the strangers living there spent their time in nothing else, but either to tell or to hear some new thing.Now all [the] Athenians and the strangers sojourning there spent their time in nothing else than to tell and to hear the news.(For all the Athenians and strangers who were there, spent their time in nothing else, but either to tell, or to hear some new thing.)
Acts 17:22Paul stood in the midst of the Areopagus, and said, "You men of Athens, I perceive that you are very religious in all things.And Paul standing in the midst of Areopagus said, Athenians, in every way I see you given up to demon worship;Then Paul stood in the midst of Mars-hill, and said, Ye men of Athens, I perceive that in all things ye are too superstitious.
Acts 17:23For as I passed along, and observed the objects of your worship, I found also an altar with this inscription: 'TO AN UNKNOWN GOD.' What therefore you worship in ignorance, this I announce to you.for, passing through and beholding your shrines, I found also an altar on which was inscribed, To the unknown God. Whom therefore ye reverence, not knowing [him], him I announce to you.For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription, TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I to you.
Acts 17:24The God who made the world and all things in it, he, being Lord of heaven and earth, dwells not in temples made with hands,The God who has made the world and all things which are in it, *he*, being Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples made with hands,God that made the world, and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands;
Acts 17:25neither is he served by men's hands, as though he needed anything, seeing he himself gives to all life and breath, and all things.nor is served by men's hands as needing something, himself giving to all life and breath and all things;Neither is worshiped with men's hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things;
Acts 17:26He made from one blood every nation of men to dwell on all the surface of the earth, having determined appointed seasons, and the bounds of their habitation,and has made of one blood every nation of men to dwell upon the whole face of the earth, having determined ordained times and the boundaries of their dwelling,And hath made of one blood all nations of men to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation;
Acts 17:27that they should seek the Lord, if perhaps they might reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from each one of us.that they may seek God; if indeed they might feel after him and find him, although he is not far from each one of us:That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he is not far from every one of us:
Acts 17:28'For in him we live, and move, and have our being.' As some of your own poets have said, 'For we are also his offspring.'for in him we live and move and exist; as also some of the poets amongst you have said, For we are also his offspring.For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, for we are also his offspring.
Acts 17:29Being then the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Divine Nature is like gold, or silver, or stone, engraved by art and device of man.Being therefore [the] offspring of God, we ought not to think that which is divine to be like gold or silver or stone, [the] graven form of man's art and imagination.Being then the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like to gold, or silver, or stone graven by art and man's device.
Acts 17:30The times of ignorance therefore God overlooked. But now he commands that all men everywhere should repent,God therefore, having overlooked the times of ignorance, now enjoins men that they shall all everywhere repent,And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent:
Acts 17:31because he has appointed a day in which he will judge the world in righteousness by the man whom he has ordained; whereof he has given assurance to all men, in that he has raised him from the dead."because he has set a day in which he is going to judge the habitable earth in righteousness by [the] man whom he has appointed, giving the proof [of it] to all [in] having raised him from among [the] dead.Because he hath appointed a day, in which he will judge the world in righteousness, by that man whom he hath ordained: of which he hath given assurance to all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.
Acts 17:32Now when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked; but others said, "We want to hear you yet again concerning this."And when they heard [of the] resurrection of the dead, some mocked, and some said, We will hear thee again also concerning this.And when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked: and others said, We will hear thee again concerning this matter.
Acts 17:33Thus Paul went out from among them.Thus Paul went out of their midst.So Paul departed from among them.
Acts 17:34But certain men joined with him, and believed, among whom also was Dionysius the Areopagite, and a woman named Damaris, and others with them.But some men joining themselves to him believed; among whom also was Dionysius the Areopagite, and a woman by name Damaris, and others with them.But certain men adhered to him, and believed: among whom was Dionysius the Areopagite, and a woman named Damaris, and others with them.
