John 11:1Now a certain man was sick, Lazarus of Bethany, of the village of Mary and her sister, Martha.Now there was a certain man sick, named Lazarus, of Bethania, of the town of Mary and Martha her sister.Now a certain man named Lazarus was ill; he was of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha.
John 11:2It was that Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother, Lazarus, was sick.(And Mary was she that anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair: whose brother Lazarus was sick.)(The Mary whose brother Lazarus was ill, was the Mary who put perfumed oil on the Lord and made his feet dry with her hair.)
John 11:3The sisters therefore sent to him, saying, "Lord, behold, he for whom you have great affection is sick."His sisters therefore sent to him, saying: Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick.So the sisters sent to him, saying, Lord, your dear friend is ill.
John 11:4But when Jesus heard it, he said, "This sickness is not to death, but for the glory of God, that God's Son may be glorified by it."And Jesus hearing it, said to them: This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God: that the Son of God may be glorified by it.When this came to his ears, Jesus said, The end of this disease is not death, but the glory of God, so that the Son of God may have glory because of it.
John 11:5Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus.Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister Mary, and Lazarus.Now Jesus had love in his heart for Martha and her sister and Lazarus.
John 11:6When therefore he heard that he was sick, he stayed at that time two days in the place where he was.When he had heard therefore that he was sick, he still remained in the same place two days.So when the news came to him that Lazarus was ill, he did not go from the place where he was for two days.
John 11:7Then after this he said to the disciples, "Let's go into Judea again."Then after that, he said to his disciples: Let us go into Judea again.Then after that time he said to his disciples, Let us go into Judaea again.
John 11:8The disciples told him, "Rabbi, the Jews were just trying to stone you, and are you going there again?"The disciples say to him: Rabbi, the Jews but now sought to stone thee: and goest thou thither again?The disciples said to him, Master, the Jews were attempting only the other day to have you stoned, and are you going back there again?
John 11:9Jesus answered, "Aren't there twelve hours of daylight? If a man walks in the day, he doesn't stumble, because he sees the light of this world.Jesus answered: Are there not twelve hours of the day? If a man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world:Then Jesus said in answer, Are there not twelve hours in the day? A man may go about in the day without falling, because he sees the light of this world.
John 11:10But if a man walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light isn't in him."But if he walk in the night, he stumbleth, because the light is not in him.But if a man goes about in the night, he may have a fall because the light is not in him.
John 11:11He said these things, and after that, he said to them, "Our friend, Lazarus, has fallen asleep, but I am going so that I may awake him out of sleep."These things he said; and after that he said to them: Lazarus our friend sleepeth; but I go that I may awake him out of sleep.These things said he: and after that he said to them, Lazarus our friend is at rest; but I go so that I may make him come out of his sleep.
John 11:12The disciples therefore said to him, "Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover."His disciples therefore said: Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well.Then his disciples said to him, Lord, if he is resting he will get well.
John 11:13Now Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that he spoke of taking rest in sleep.But Jesus spoke of his death; and they thought that he spoke of the repose of sleep.Jesus, however, was talking of his death: but they had the idea that he was talking about taking rest in sleep.
John 11:14So Jesus said to them plainly then, "Lazarus is dead.Then therefore Jesus said to them plainly: Lazarus is dead.Then Jesus said to them clearly, Lazarus is dead.
John 11:15I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, so that you may believe. Nevertheless, let's go to him."And I am glad, for your sakes, that I was not there, that you may believe: but let us go to him.And because of you I am glad I was not there, so that you may have faith; but let us go to him.
John 11:16Thomas therefore, who is called Didymus, said to his fellow disciples, "Let's go also, that we may die with him."Thomas therefore, who is called Didymus, said to his fellow disciples: Let us also go, that we may die with him.Then Thomas, who was named Didymus, said to the other disciples, Let us go so that we may be with him in death.
John 11:17So when Jesus came, he found that he had been in the tomb four days already.Jesus therefore came, and found that he had been four days already in the grave.Now when Jesus came, he made the discovery that Lazarus had been put into the earth four days before.
John 11:18Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, about fifteen stadia away.(Now Bethania was near Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off.)Now Bethany was near to Jerusalem, about two miles away;
John 11:19Many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary, to console them concerning their brother.And many of the Jews were come to Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother.And a number of Jews had come to Martha and Mary to give them comfort about their brother.
John 11:20Therefore Martha, when she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met him, but Mary stayed in the house.Martha therefore, as soon as she heard that Jesus had come, went to meet him: but Mary sat at home.When Martha had the news that Jesus was on the way, she went out to him, but Mary did not go from the house.
John 11:21Therefore Martha said to Jesus, "Lord, if you would have been here, my brother wouldn't have died.Martha therefore said to Jesus: Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.Then Martha said to Jesus, Lord, if you had been here my brother would not be dead.
John 11:22Even now I know that, whatever you ask of God, God will give you."But now also I know that whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give it thee.But I am certain that, even now, whatever request you make to God, God will give it to you.
John 11:23Jesus said to her, "Your brother will rise again."Jesus saith to her: Thy brother shall rise again.Jesus said to her, Your brother will come to life again.
John 11:24Martha said to him, "I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day."Martha saith to him: I know that he shall rise again, in the resurrection at the last day.Martha said to him, I am certain that he will come to life again when all come back from the dead at the last day.
John 11:25Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me, though he die, yet will he live.Jesus said to her: I am the resurrection and the life: he that believeth in me, although he be dead, shall live:Jesus said to her, I am myself that day and that life; he who has faith in me will have life even if he is dead;
John 11:26Whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?"And every one that liveth, and believeth in me, shall not die for ever. Believest thou this?And no one who is living and has faith in me will ever see death. Is this your faith?
John 11:27She said to him, "Yes, Lord. I have come to believe that you are the Christ, God's Son, he who comes into the world."She saith to him: Yea, Lord, I have believed that thou art Christ the Son of the living God, who art come into this world.She said to him, Yes, Lord: my faith is that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who was to come into the world.
John 11:28When she had said this, she went away, and called Mary, her sister, secretly, saying, "The Teacher is here, and is calling you."And when she had said these things, she went, and called her sister Mary secretly, saying: The master is come, and calleth for thee.And having said this, she went away and said secretly to her sister Mary, The Master is here and has sent for you.
John 11:29She, when she heard this, arose quickly, and went to him.She, as soon as she heard this, riseth quickly, and cometh to him.And Mary, hearing this, got up quickly and went to him.
John 11:30Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was in the place where Martha met him.For Jesus was not yet come into the town: but he was still in that place where Martha had met him.Now Jesus had not at this time come into the town, but was still in the place where Martha had seen him.
John 11:31Then the Jews who were with her in the house, and were consoling her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up quickly and went out, followed her, saying, "She is going to the tomb to weep there."The Jews therefore, who were with her in the house, and comforted her, when they saw Mary that she rose up speedily and went out, followed her, saying: She goeth to the grave to weep there.Then the Jews who were with her in the house, comforting her, when they saw Mary get up quickly and go out, went after her in the belief that she was going to the place of the dead and would be weeping there.
John 11:32Mary therefore, when she came to where Jesus was, and saw him, fell down at his feet, saying to him, "Lord, if you would have been here, my brother wouldn't have died."When Mary therefore was come where Jesus was, seeing him, she fell down at his feet, and saith to him: Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.When Mary came to where Jesus was and saw him, she went down at his feet, saying, Lord, if you had been here my brother would not be dead.
John 11:33When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews weeping who came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled,Jesus, therefore, when he saw her weeping, and the Jews that were come with her, weeping, groaned in the spirit, and troubled himself,And when Jesus saw her weeping, and saw the Jews weeping who came with her, his spirit was moved and he was troubled,
John 11:34and said, "Where have you laid him?" They told him, "Lord, come and see."And said: Where have you laid him? They say to him: Lord, come and see.And said, Where have you put him? They said, Come and see, Lord.
John 11:35Jesus wept.And Jesus wept.And Jesus himself was weeping.
John 11:36The Jews therefore said, "See how much affection he had for him!"The Jews therefore said: Behold how he loved him.So the Jews said, See how dear he was to him!
John 11:37Some of them said, "Couldn't this man, who opened the eyes of him who was blind, have also caused that this man wouldn't die?"But some of them said: Could not he that opened the eyes of the man born blind, have caused that this man should not die?But some of them said, This man, who made open the eyes of the blind man, was he not able to keep his friend from death?
John 11:38Jesus therefore, again groaning in himself, came to the tomb. Now it was a cave, and a stone lay against it.Jesus therefore again groaning in himself, cometh to the sepulchre. Now it was a cave; and a stone was laid over it.So Jesus, deeply troubled in heart, came to the place of the dead. It was a hole in the rock, and a stone was over the opening.
John 11:39Jesus said, "Take away the stone." Martha, the sister of him who was dead, said to him, "Lord, by this time there is a stench, for he has been dead four days."Jesus saith: Take away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith to him: Lord, by this time he stinketh, for he is now of four days.Jesus said, Take away the stone. Martha, the sister of him who was dead, said, Lord, by this time the body will be smelling, for he has been dead four days.
John 11:40Jesus said to her, "Didn't I tell you that if you believed, you would see God's glory?"Jesus saith to her: Did not I say to thee, that if thou believe, thou shalt see the glory of God?Jesus said to her, Did I not say to you that if you had faith you would see the glory of God?
John 11:41So they took away the stone from the place where the dead man was lying. Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, "Father, I thank you that you listened to me.They took therefore the stone away. And Jesus lifting up his eyes said: Father, I give thee thanks that thou hast heard me.So they took away the stone. And Jesus, looking up to heaven, said, Father, I give praise to you for hearing me.
John 11:42I know that you always listen to me, but because of the multitude that stands around I said this, that they may believe that you sent me."And I knew that thou hearest me always; but because of the people who stand about have I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me.I was certain that your ears are at all times open to me, but I said it because of these who are here, so that they may see that you sent me.
John 11:43When he had said this, he cried with a loud voice, "Lazarus, come out!"When he had said these things, he cried with a loud voice: Lazarus, come forth.Then he said in a loud voice, Lazarus, come out!
John 11:44He who was dead came out, bound hand and foot with wrappings, and his face was wrapped around with a cloth. Jesus said to them, "Free him, and let him go."And presently he that had been dead came forth, bound feet and hands with winding bands; and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus said to them: Loose him, and let him go.And he who was dead came out, with linen bands folded tightly about his hands and feet, and a cloth about his face. Jesus said to them, Make him free and let him go.
John 11:45Therefore many of the Jews, who came to Mary and saw that which Jesus did, believed in him.Many therefore of the Jews, who were come to Mary and Martha, and had seen the things that Jesus did, believed in him.Then a number of the Jews who had come to Mary and had seen the things which Jesus did had belief in him.
John 11:46But some of them went away to the Pharisees, and told them the things which Jesus had done.But some of them went to the Pharisees, and told them the things that Jesus had done.But some of them went to the Pharisees with the news of what Jesus had done.
John 11:47The chief priests therefore and the Pharisees gathered a council, and said, "What are we doing? For this man does many signs.The chief priests therefore, and the Pharisees, gathered a council, and said: What do we, for this man doth many miracles?Then the high priests and the Pharisees had a meeting and said, What are we doing? This man is doing a number of signs.
John 11:48If we leave him alone like this, everyone will believe in him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation."If we let him alone so, all will believe in him; and the Romans will come, and take away our place and nation.If we let him go on in this way, everybody will have belief in him and the Romans will come and take away our place and our nation.
John 11:49But a certain one of them, Caiaphas, being high priest that year, said to them, "You know nothing at all,But one of them, named Caiphas, being the high priest that year, said to them: You know nothing.But one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them, You have no knowledge of anything;
John 11:50nor do you take account that it is advantageous for us that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation not perish."Neither do you consider that it is expedient for you that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not.You do not see that it is in your interest for one man to be put to death for the people, so that all the nation may not come to destruction.
John 11:51Now he didn't say this of himself, but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation,And this he spoke not of himself: but being the high priest of that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for the nation.He did not say this of himself, but being the high priest that year he said, as a prophet, that Jesus would be put to death for the nation;
John 11:52and not for the nation only, but that he might also gather together into one the children of God who are scattered abroad.And not only for the nation, but to gather together in one the children of God, that were dispersed.And not for that nation only, but for the purpose of uniting in one body the children of God all over the world.
John 11:53So from that day forth they took counsel that they might put him to death.From that day therefore they devised to put him to death.And from that day they took thought together how to put him to death.
John 11:54Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews, but departed from there into the country near the wilderness, into a city called Ephraim. He stayed there with his disciples.Wherefore Jesus walked no more openly among the Jews; but he went into a country near the desert, unto a city that is called Ephrem, and there he abode with his disciples.So Jesus no longer went about publicly among the Jews, but went from there into the country near to the waste land, to a town named Ephraim, where he was for some time with the disciples.
John 11:55Now the Passover of the Jews was at hand. Many went up to Jerusalem out of the country before the Passover, to purify themselves.And the pasch of the Jews was at hand; and many from the country went up to Jerusalem, before the pasch to purify themselves.Now the Passover of the Jews was near, and numbers of people went up from the country to Jerusalem to make themselves clean before the Passover.
John 11:56Then they sought for Jesus and spoke one with another, as they stood in the temple, "What do you think? Isn't he coming to the feast?"They sought therefore for Jesus; and they discoursed one with another, standing in the temple: What think you that he is not come to the festival day? And the chief priests and Pharisees had given a commandment, that if any man knew where he was, he should tell, that they might apprehend him.They were looking for Jesus and saying to one another while they were in the Temple, What is your opinion? Will he not come to the feast?
John 11:57Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had commanded that if anyone knew where he was, he should report it, that they might seize him.Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that if anyone had knowledge where he was, he was to give them word, so that they might take him.
