Matthew 14:1At that time, Herod, the tetrarch, heard the report concerning Jesus,At that time Herod the Tetrarch heard of the fame of Jesus,At that time news of Jesus came to Herod the king;
Matthew 14:2and said to his servants, "This is John the Baptizer. He is risen from the dead. That is why these powers work in him."And said to his servants, This is John the Baptist; he hath risen from the dead; and therefore mighty works do show forth themselves in him.And he said to his servants, This is John the Baptist; he has come back from the dead, and so these powers are working in him.
Matthew 14:3For Herod had laid hold of John, and bound him, and put him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife.For Herod had laid hold on John, and bound him, and put him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife.For Herod had taken John and put him in prison because of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife.
Matthew 14:4For John said to him, "It is not lawful for you to have her."For John had said to him, It is not lawful for thee to have her.Because John had said to him, It is not right for you to have her.
Matthew 14:5When he would have put him to death, he feared the multitude, because they counted him as a prophet.And when he would have put him to death, he feared the multitude, because they counted him as a prophet.And he would have put him to death, but for his fear of the people, because in their eyes John was a prophet.
Matthew 14:6But when Herod's birthday came, the daughter of Herodias danced in the midst, and pleased Herod.But when Herod's birth-day was kept, the daughter of Herodias danced before them, and pleased Herod.But when Herod's birthday came, the daughter of Herodias was dancing before them, and Herod was pleased with her.
Matthew 14:7Whereupon he promised with an oath to give her whatever she should ask.Upon which he promised with an oath to give her whatever she would ask.So he gave her his word with an oath to let her have whatever she might make request for.
Matthew 14:8She, being put forward by her mother, said, "Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptizer."And she, being before instructed by her mother, said, Give me here the head of John the Baptist in a dish.And she, at her mother's suggestion, said, Give me here on a plate the head of John the Baptist.
Matthew 14:9The king was grieved, but for the sake of his oaths, and of those who sat at the table with him, he commanded it to be given,And the king was sorry: nevertheless for the sake of the oath, and of them who sat with him at table, he commanded it to be given her.And the king was sad; but because of his oaths and because of his guests, he gave the order for it to be given to her;
Matthew 14:10and he sent and beheaded John in the prison.And he sent, and beheaded John in the prison.And he sent and had John's head cut off in the prison.
Matthew 14:11His head was brought on a platter, and given to the young lady: and she brought it to her mother.And his head was brought in a dish, and given to the damsel: and she brought it to her mother.And his head was put on a plate and given to the girl; and she took it to her mother.
Matthew 14:12His disciples came, and took up the body, and buried it; and they went and told Jesus.And his disciples came, and took up the body, and buried it, and went and told Jesus.And his disciples came, and took up his body and put it in the earth; and they went and gave Jesus news of what had taken place.
Matthew 14:13Now when Jesus heard this, he withdrew from there in a boat, to a desert place apart. When the multitudes heard it, they followed him on foot from the cities.When Jesus heard of it, he departed thence in a boat, into a desert place apart: and when the people had heard of it, they followed him on foot out of the cities.Now when it came to the ears of Jesus, he went away from there in a boat, to a waste place by himself: and the people hearing of it, went after him on foot from the towns.
Matthew 14:14Jesus went out, and he saw a great multitude. He had compassion on them, and healed their sick.And Jesus went forth, and saw a great multitude, and was moved with compassion towards them, and he healed their sick.And he came out and saw a great number of people and he had pity on them, and made well those of them who were ill.
Matthew 14:15When evening had come, his disciples came to him, saying, "The place is a desert, and the time is already past. Send the multitudes away, that they may go into the villages, and buy themselves food."And when it was evening, his disciples came to him, saying, This is a desert place, and the time is now past; send the multitude away, that they may go into the villages, and buy themselves victuals.And when evening had come, the disciples came to him, saying, This place is waste land, and the time is now past; send the people away so that they may go into the towns and get themselves food.
Matthew 14:16But Jesus said to them, "They don't need to go away. You give them something to eat."But Jesus said to them, They need not depart; give ye them to eat.But Jesus said to them, There is no need for them to go away; give them food yourselves.
Matthew 14:17They told him, "We only have here five loaves and two fish."And they say to him, We have here but five loaves, and two fishes.And they say to him, We have here but five cakes of bread and two fishes.
Matthew 14:18He said, "Bring them here to me."He said, Bring them hither to me.And he said, Give them to me.
Matthew 14:19He commanded the multitudes to sit down on the grass; and he took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, he blessed, broke and gave the loaves to the disciples, and the disciples to the multitudes.And he commanded the multitude to sit down on the grass, and took the five loaves, and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed, and broke, and gave the loaves to his disciples, and the disciples to the multitude.And he gave orders for the people to be seated on the grass; and he took the five cakes of bread and the two fishes and, looking up to heaven, he said words of blessing, and made division of the food, and gave it to the disciples, and the disciples gave it to the people.
Matthew 14:20They all ate, and were filled. They took up twelve baskets full of that which remained left over from the broken pieces.And they all ate, and were satisfied: and they took up of the fragments that remained twelve baskets full.And they all took of the food and had enough: and they took up twelve baskets full of broken bits which were not used.
Matthew 14:21Those who ate were about five thousand men, besides women and children.And they that had eaten were about five thousand men, besides women and children.And those who had food were about five thousand men, in addition to women and children.
Matthew 14:22Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat, and to go ahead of him to the other side, while he sent the multitudes away.And immediately Jesus constrained his disciples to get into a boat, and to go before him to the other side, while he sent the multitudes away.And straight away he made the disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, till he had sent the people away.
Matthew 14:23After he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into the mountain apart to pray. When evening had come, he was there alone.And when he had sent the multitudes away, he ascended a mountain apart to pray: and when the evening was come, he was there alone.And after he had sent the people away, he went up into the mountain by himself for prayer: and when evening was come, he was there by himself.
Matthew 14:24But the boat was now in the midst of the sea, distressed by the waves, for the wind was contrary.But the boat was now in the midst of the sea, tossed with waves: for the wind was contrary.But the boat was now in the middle of the sea, and was troubled by the waves: for the wind was against them.
Matthew 14:25In the fourth watch of the night Jesus came to them, walking on the sea.And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went to them, walking on the sea.And in the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea.
Matthew 14:26When the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, "It is a ghost!" and they cried out for fear.And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear.And when they saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they gave cries of fear.
Matthew 14:27But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying "Cheer up! I AM! Don't be afraid."But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid.But straight away Jesus said to them, Take heart; it is I, have no fear.
Matthew 14:28Peter answered him and said, "Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the waters."And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it is thou, bid me come to thee on the water.And Peter, answering, said to him, Lord, if it is you, give me the order to come to you on the water.
Matthew 14:29He said, "Come!" Peter went down from the boat, and walked on the waters to come to Jesus.And he said, Come. And when Peter had come down out of the boat, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus.And he said, Come. And Peter got out of the boat, and walking on the water, went to Jesus.
Matthew 14:30But when he saw that the wind was strong, he was afraid, and beginning to sink, he cried out, saying, "Lord, save me!"But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me.But when he saw the wind he was in fear and, starting to go down, he gave a cry, saying, Help, Lord.
Matthew 14:31Immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and took hold of him, and said to him, "You of little faith, why did you doubt?"And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said to him, O thou of little faith, Why didst thou doubt?And straight away Jesus put out his hand and took a grip of him, and said to him, O man of little faith, why were you in doubt?
Matthew 14:32When they got up into the boat, the wind ceased.And when they had come into the boat, the wind ceased.And when they had got into the boat, the wind went down.
Matthew 14:33Those who were in the boat came and worshipped him, saying, "You are truly the Son of God!"Then they that were in the boat came and worshiped him, saying, In truth thou art the son of God.And those who were in the boat gave him worship, saying, Truly you are the Son of God.
Matthew 14:34When they had crossed over, they came to the land of Gennesaret.And when they had gone over, they came into the land of Gennesaret.And when they had gone across, they came to land at Gennesaret.
Matthew 14:35When the men of that place recognized him, they sent into all that region round about, and brought to him all who were sick,And when the men of that place had knowledge of him, they sent out into all the surrounding country, and brought to him all that were diseased;And when the men of that place had news of him, they sent into all the country round about, and took to him all who were ill,
Matthew 14:36and they begged him that they might only touch the fringe of his garment. As many as touched it were made whole.And besought him that they might only touch the hem of his garment: and as many as touched were restored to health.With the request that they might only put their hands on the edge of his robe: and all those who did so were made well.
