1st-Samuel 1:1Now there was a certain man of Ramathaim-zophim, of the hill-country of Ephraim, and his name was Elkanah, the son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephraimite:And there was a certain man of Ramathaim-zophim, of mount Ephraim, and his name was Elkanah, the son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephrathite.
1st-Samuel 1:2and he had two wives; the name of the one was Hannah, and the name of other Peninnah: and Peninnah had children, but Hannah had no children. And he had two wives: the name of the one was Hannah, and the name of the other Peninnah; and Peninnah had children, but Hannah had no children.
1st-Samuel 1:3This man went up out of his city from year to year to worship and to sacrifice to Yahweh of Hosts in Shiloh. The two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, priests to Yahweh, were there. And this man went up out of his city from year to year to worship and to sacrifice to Jehovah of hosts in Shiloh. And the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, the priests of Jehovah, were there.
1st-Samuel 1:4When the day came that Elkanah sacrificed, he gave to Peninnah his wife, and to all her sons and her daughters, portions:And it came to pass on the day that Elkanah sacrificed, he gave to Peninnah his wife and to all her sons and her daughters portions;
1st-Samuel 1:5but to Hannah he gave a double portion; for he loved Hannah, but Yahweh had shut up her womb.but to Hannah he used to give a double portion, for he loved Hannah; but Jehovah had shut up her womb.
1st-Samuel 1:6Her rival provoked her sore, to make her fret, because Yahweh had shut up her womb. And her adversary provoked her much also, to make her fret, because Jehovah had shut up her womb.
1st-Samuel 1:7[as] he did so year by year, when she went up to the house of Yahweh, so she provoked her; therefore she wept, and did not eat.And [as] he did so year by year, as often as she went up to the house of Jehovah, she provoked her thus; and she wept and did not eat.
1st-Samuel 1:8Elkanah her husband said to her, Hannah, why weep you? and why don't you eat? and why is your heart grieved? am I not better to you than ten sons? And Elkanah her husband said to her, Hannah, why weepest thou? and why eatest thou not? and why is thy heart grieved? Am not I better to thee than ten sons?
1st-Samuel 1:9So Hannah rose up after they had eaten in Shiloh, and after they had drunk. Now Eli the priest was sitting on his seat by the door-post of the temple of Yahweh. And Hannah rose up after they had eaten in Shiloh, and after they had drunk; (now Eli the priest sat upon the seat by the door-post of the temple of Jehovah;)
1st-Samuel 1:10She was in bitterness of soul, and prayed to Yahweh, and wept sore.and she was in bitterness of soul, and prayed to Jehovah, and wept much.
1st-Samuel 1:11She vowed a vow, and said, Yahweh of hosts, if you will indeed look on the affliction of your handmaid, and remember me, and not forget your handmaid, but will give to your handmaid a man-child, then I will give him to Yahweh all the days of his life, and there shall no razor come on his head. And she vowed a vow, and said, O Jehovah of hosts, if thou wilt indeed look on the affliction of thy handmaid, and remember me, and not forget thy handmaid, but wilt give unto thy handmaid a man child, then I will give him to Jehovah all the days of his life, and there shall no razor come upon his head.
1st-Samuel 1:12It happened, as she continued praying before Yahweh, that Eli marked her mouth. And it came to pass as she continued praying before Jehovah, that Eli marked her mouth.
1st-Samuel 1:13Now Hannah, she spoke in her heart; only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard: therefore Eli thought she had been drunken. Now Hannah spoke in her heart; only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard; and Eli thought she was drunken.
1st-Samuel 1:14Eli said to her, How long will you be drunken? put away your wine from you.And Eli said to her, How long wilt thou be drunken? put away thy wine from thee.
1st-Samuel 1:15Hannah answered, No, my lord, I am a woman of a sorrowful spirit: I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but I poured out my soul before Yahweh. And Hannah answered and said, No, my lord, I am a woman of a sorrowful spirit: I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but have poured out my soul before Jehovah.
1st-Samuel 1:16Don't count your handmaid for a wicked woman; for out of the abundance of my complaint and my provocation have I spoken hitherto.Take not thy handmaid for a daughter of Belial: for out of the abundance of my grief and provocation have I spoken hitherto.
1st-Samuel 1:17Then Eli answered, Go in peace; and the God of Israel grant your petition that you have asked of him.And Eli answered and said, Go in peace; and the God of Israel grant thee thy petition which thou hast asked of him.
1st-Samuel 1:18She said, Let your handmaid find favor in your sight. So the woman went her way, and ate; and her facial expression wasn't sad any more. And she said, Let thy bondwoman find grace in thy sight. And the woman went her way, and did eat, and her countenance was no more [as before].
1st-Samuel 1:19They rose up in the morning early, and worshipped before Yahweh, and returned, and came to their house to Ramah: and Elkanah knew Hannah his wife; and Yahweh remembered her.And they rose up early in the morning and worshipped before Jehovah, and returned and came to their house at Ramah. And Elkanah knew Hannah his wife; and Jehovah remembered her.
1st-Samuel 1:20It happened, when the time was come about, that Hannah conceived, and bore a son; and she named him Samuel, [saying], Because I have asked him of Yahweh. And it came to pass when the time was come about after Hannah had conceived, that she bore a son, and called his name Samuel, [saying,] Because I have asked him of Jehovah.
1st-Samuel 1:21The man Elkanah, and all his house, went up to offer to Yahweh the yearly sacrifice, and his vow.And Elkanah her husband, and all his house, went up to sacrifice to Jehovah the yearly sacrifice and his vow.
1st-Samuel 1:22But Hannah didn't go up; for she said to her husband, [I will not go up] until the child be weaned; and then I will bring him, that he may appear before Yahweh, and there abide forever. But Hannah did not go up, for she said to her husband, [I will wait] until the child is weaned; then will I bring him, that he may appear before Jehovah, and there abide for ever.
1st-Samuel 1:23Elkanah her husband said to her, Do what seems you good; wait until you have weaned him; only Yahweh establish his word. So the woman waited and nursed her son, until she weaned him.And Elkanah her husband said to her, Do what is good in thy sight: abide until thou hast weaned him; only, may Jehovah fulfil his word. And the woman abode, and gave her son suck until she weaned him.
1st-Samuel 1:24When she had weaned him, she took him up with her, with three bulls, and one ephah of meal, and a bottle of wine, and brought him to the house of Yahweh in Shiloh: and the child was young. And she took him up with her when she had weaned him, with three bullocks, and one ephah of flour, and a flask of wine, and brought him to the house of Jehovah to Shiloh; and the boy was young.
1st-Samuel 1:25They killed the bull, and brought the child to Eli.And they slaughtered the bullock, and brought the boy to Eli.
1st-Samuel 1:26She said, Oh, my lord, as your soul lives, my lord, I am the woman who stood by you here, praying to Yahweh. And she said, Oh my lord, [as] thy soul liveth, my lord, I am the woman that stood by thee here to pray to Jehovah.
1st-Samuel 1:27For this child I prayed; and Yahweh has given me my petition which I asked of him:For this boy I prayed; and Jehovah has granted me my petition which I asked of him.
1st-Samuel 1:28therefore also I have granted him to Yahweh; as long as he lives he is granted to Yahweh. He worshipped Yahweh there. And also I have lent him to Jehovah: all the days that he lives, he is lent to Jehovah. And he worshipped Jehovah there.
