Mark 7:1 | Then the Pharisees, and some of the scribes gathered together to him, having come from Jerusalem. | Then the Pharisees, with certain Scribes who had come from Jerusalem, came to Him in a body. | And there assembled together unto him the Pharisees and some of the scribes, coming from Jerusalem. |
Mark 7:2 | Now when they saw some of his disciples eating bread with defiled, that is, unwashed, hands, they found fault. | They had noticed that some of His disciples were eating their food with `unclean' (that is to say, unwashed) hands. | And when they had seen some of his disciples eat bread with common, that is, with unwashed hands, they found fault. |
Mark 7:3 | (For the Pharisees, and all the Jews, don't eat unless they wash their hands and forearms, holding to the tradition of the elders. | (For the Pharisees and all the Jews being, as they are, zealous for the traditions of the Elders never eat without first carefully washing their hands, | For the Pharisees, and all the Jews eat not without often washing their hands, holding the tradition of the ancients: |
Mark 7:4 | They don't eat when they come from the marketplace, unless they bathe themselves, and there are many other things, which they have received to hold to: washings of cups, pitchers, bronze vessels, and couches.) | and when they come from market they will not eat without bathing first; and they have a good many other customs which they have received traditionally and cling to, such as the rinsing of cups and pots and of bronze utensils, and the washing of beds.) | And when they come from the market, unless they be washed, they eat not: and many other things there are that have been delivered to them to observe, the washings of cups and of pots, and of brazen vessels, and of beds. |
Mark 7:5 | The Pharisees and the scribes asked him, "Why don't your disciples walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat their bread with unwashed hands?" | So the Pharisees and Scribes put the question to Him: "Why do your disciples transgress the traditions of the Elders, and eat their food with unclean hands?" | And the Pharisees and scribes asked him: Why do not thy disciples walk according to the tradition of the ancients, but they eat bread with common hands? |
Mark 7:6 | He answered them, "Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written, 'This people honors me with their lips, But their heart is far from me. | "Rightly did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites," He replied; "as it is written, "`This People honour Me with their lips, while their hearts are far away from Me: | But he answering, said to them: Well did Isaias prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written: This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me. |
Mark 7:7 | But in vain do they worship me, Teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.' | But idle is their devotion while they lay down precepts which are mere human rules.' | And in vain to they worship me, teaching doctrines and precepts of men. |
Mark 7:8 | "For you set aside the commandment of God, and hold tightly to the tradition of men the washing of pitchers and cups, and you do many other such things." | "You neglect God's Commandment: you hold fast to men's traditions." | For leaving the commandment of God, you hold the tradition of men, the washing of pots and of cups: and many other things you do like to these. |
Mark 7:9 | He said to them, "Full well do you reject the commandment of God, that you may keep your tradition. | "Praiseworthy indeed!" He added, "to set at nought God's Commandment in order to observe your own traditions! | And he said to them: Well do you make void the commandment of God, that you may keep your own tradition. |
Mark 7:10 | For Moses said, 'Honor your father and your mother;' and, 'He who speaks evil of father or mother, let him be put to death.' | For Moses said, `Honour thy father and thy mother' and again, `He who curses father or mother, let him die the death.' | For Moses said: Honor thy father and thy mother; and He that shall curse father or mother, dying let him die. |
Mark 7:11 | But you say, 'If a man will tell his father or his mother, "Whatever you might have been profited by me is Corban, that is to say, given to God;"' | But *you* say, `If a man says to his father or mother, It is a Korban (that is, a thing devoted to God), whatever it is, which otherwise you would have received from me ' | But you say: If a man shall say to his father or mother, Corban, (which is a gift,) whatsoever is from me, shall profit thee. |
Mark 7:12 | and you no longer allow him to do anything for his father or his mother, | And so you no longer allow him to do anything for his father or mother, | And further you suffer him not to do any thing for his father or mother, |
Mark 7:13 | making void the word of God by your tradition, which you have handed down. You do many things like this." | thus nullifying God's precept by your tradition which you have handed down. And many things of that kind you do." | Making void the word of God by your own tradition, which you have given forth. And many other such like things you do. |
Mark 7:14 | He called all the multitude to himself, and said to them, "Hear me, all of you, and understand. | Then Jesus called the people to Him again. "Listen to me, all of you," He said, "and understand. | And calling again the multitude unto him, he said to them: Hear ye me all, and understand. |
Mark 7:15 | There is nothing from outside of the man, that going into him can defile him; but the things which proceed out of the man are those that defile the man. | There is nothing outside a man which entering him can make him unclean; but it is the things which come out of a man that make him unclean." | There is nothing from without a man that entering into him, can defile him. But the things which come from a man, those are they that defile a man. |
Mark 7:16 | If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear!" | [] | If any man have ears to hear, let him hear. |
Mark 7:17 | When he had entered into the house from the multitude, his disciples asked him about the parable. | After He had left the crowd and gone indoors, His disciples began to ask Him about this figure of speech. | And when he was come into the house from the multitude, his disciples asked him the parable. |
Mark 7:18 | He said to them, "Are you so without understanding also? Don't you perceive that whatever goes into the man from outside can't defile him, | "Have *you* also so little understanding?" He replied; "do you not understand that anything whatever that enters a man from outside cannot make him unclean, | And he saith to them: So are you also without knowledge? understand you not that every thing from without, entering into a man cannot defile him: |
Mark 7:19 | because it doesn't go into his heart, but into his belly, and into the latrine, thus making all foods clean?" | because it does not go into his heart, but into his stomach, and passes away ejected from him?" By these words Jesus pronounced all kinds of food clean. | Because it entereth not into his heart, but goeth into the belly, and goeth out into the privy, purging all meats? |
Mark 7:20 | He said, "That which proceeds out of the man, that defiles the man. | "What comes out of a man," He added, "that it is which makes him unclean. | But he said that the things which come out from a man, they defile a man. |
Mark 7:21 | For from within, out of the hearts of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, sexual sins, murders, thefts, | For from within, out of men's hearts, their evil purposes proceed fornication, theft, murder, adultery, | For from within out of the heart of men proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, |
Mark 7:22 | covetings, wickedness, deceit, lustful desires, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, and foolishness. | covetousness, wickedness, deceit, licentiousness, envy, reviling, pride, reckless folly: | Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness. |
Mark 7:23 | All these evil things proceed from within, and defile the man." | all these wicked things come out from within and make a man unclean." | All these evil things come from within, and defile a man. |
Mark 7:24 | From there he arose, and went away into the borders of Tyre and Sidon. He entered into a house, and wanted no one to know it, but he couldn't escape detection. | Then He rose and left that place and went into the neighbourhood of Tyre and Sidon. Here He entered a house and wished no one to know it, but He could not escape observation. | And rising from thence he went into the coasts of Tyre and Sidon: and entering into a house, he would that no man should know it, and he could not be hid. |
Mark 7:25 | For a woman, whose little daughter had an unclean spirit, having heard of him, came and fell down at his feet. | Forthwith a woman whose little daughter was possessed by a foul spirit heard of Him, and came and flung herself at His feet. | For a woman as soon as she heard of him, whose daughter had an unclean spirit, came in and fell down at his feet. |
Mark 7:26 | Now the woman was a Greek, a Syrophoenician by race. She begged him that he would cast the demon out of her daughter. | She was a Gentile woman, a Syro-phoenician by nation: and again and again she begged Him to expel the demon from her daughter. | For the woman was a Gentile, a Syrophenician born. And she besought him that he would cast forth the devil out of her daughter. |
Mark 7:27 | But Jesus said to her, "Let the children be filled first, for it is not appropriate to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs." | "Let the children first eat all they want," He said; "it is not right to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs." | Who said to her: Suffer first the children to be filled: for it is not good to take the bread of the children, and cast it to the dogs. |
Mark 7:28 | But she answered him, "Yes, Lord. For even the dogs under the table eat the children's crumbs." | "True, Sir," she replied, "and yet the dogs under the table eat the children's scraps." | But she answered and said to him: Yea, Lord; for the whelps also eat under the table of the crumbs of the children. |
Mark 7:29 | He said to her, "For this saying, go your way. The demon has gone out of your daughter." | "For those words of yours, go home," He replied; "the demon has gone out of your daughter." | And he said to her: For this saying go thy way, the devil is gone out of thy daughter. |
Mark 7:30 | She went away to her house, and found the child laying on the bed, with the demon gone out. | So she went home, and found the child lying on the bed, and the demon gone. | And when she was come into her house, she found the girl lying upon the bed, and that the devil was gone out. |
Mark 7:31 | Again he departed from the borders of Tyre and Sidon, and came to the sea of Galilee, through the midst of the borders of Decapolis. | Returning from the neighbourhood of Tyre, He came by way of Sidon to the Lake of Galilee, passing through the district of the Ten Towns. | And again going out of the coasts of Tyre, he came by Sidon to the sea of Galilee, through the midst of the coasts of Decapolis. |
Mark 7:32 | They brought to him one who was deaf and had an impediment in his speech. They begged him to lay his hand on him. | Here they brought to Him a deaf man that stammered, on whom they begged Him to lay His hands. | And they bring to him one deaf and dumb; and they besought him that he would lay his hand upon him. |
Mark 7:33 | He took him aside from the multitude, privately, and put his fingers into his ears, and he spat, and touched his tongue. | So Jesus taking him aside, apart from the crowd, put His fingers into his ears, and spat, and moistened his tongue; | And taking him from the multitude apart, he put his fingers into his ears, and spitting, he touched his tongue: |
Mark 7:34 | Looking up to heaven, he sighed, and said to him, "Ephphatha!" that is, "Be opened!" | and looking up to Heaven He sighed, and said to him, "Ephphatha!" (that is, "Open!") | And looking up to heaven, he groaned, and said to him: Ephpheta, which is, Be thou opened. |
Mark 7:35 | Immediately his ears were opened, and the bond of his tongue was loosed, and he spoke clearly. | And the man's ears were opened, and his tongue became untied, and he began to speak perfectly. | And immediately his ears were opened, and the string of his tongue was loosed, and he spoke right. |
Mark 7:36 | He charged them that they should tell no one, but the more he charged them, so much the more widely they proclaimed it. | Then Jesus charged them to tell no one; but the more He charged them, all the more did they spread the news far and wide. | And he charged them that they should tell no man. But the more he charged them, so much the more a great deal did they publish it. |
Mark 7:37 | They were astonished beyond measure, saying, "He has done all things well. He makes even the deaf hear, and the mute speak!" | The amazement was extreme. "He succeeds in everything he attempts," they exclaimed; "he even makes deaf men hear and dumb men speak!" | And so much the more did they wonder, saying: He hath done all things well; he hath made both the deaf to hear, and the dumb to speak. |
