 The World English Online Bible (WLD)The Young's Literal Translation Online Bible (YLT)The Weymouth New Testament Online Bible (WEY)
John 11:1Now a certain man was sick, Lazarus of Bethany, of the village of Mary and her sister, Martha.And there was a certain one ailing, Lazarus, from Bethany, of the village of Mary and Martha her sisterNow a certain man, named Lazarus, of Bethany, was lying ill Bethany being the village of Mary and her sister Martha.
John 11:2It was that Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother, Lazarus, was sick.and it was Mary who did anoint the Lord with ointment, and did wipe his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was ailing(It was the Mary who poured the perfume over the Lord and wiped His feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was ill.)
John 11:3The sisters therefore sent to him, saying, "Lord, behold, he for whom you have great affection is sick."therefore sent the sisters unto him, saying, `Sir, lo, he whom thou dost love is ailing;`So the sisters sent to Him to say, "Master, he whom you hold dear is ill."
John 11:4But when Jesus heard it, he said, "This sickness is not to death, but for the glory of God, that God's Son may be glorified by it."and Jesus having heard, said, `This ailment is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified through it.`Jesus received the message and said, "This illness is not to end in death, but is to promote the glory of God, in order that the Son of God may be glorified by it."
John 11:5Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus.And Jesus was loving Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus,Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus.
John 11:6When therefore he heard that he was sick, he stayed at that time two days in the place where he was.when, therefore, he heard that he is ailing, then indeed he remained in the place in which he was two days,When, however, He heard that Lazarus was ill, He still remained two days in that same place.
John 11:7Then after this he said to the disciples, "Let's go into Judea again."then after this, he saith to the disciples, `We may go to Judea again;`Then, after that, He said to the disciples, "Let us return to Judaea."
John 11:8The disciples told him, "Rabbi, the Jews were just trying to stone you, and are you going there again?"the disciples say to him, `Rabbi, now were the Jews seeking to stone thee, and again thou dost go thither!`"Rabbi," exclaimed the disciples, "the Jews have just been trying to stone you, and do you think of going back there again?"
John 11:9Jesus answered, "Aren't there twelve hours of daylight? If a man walks in the day, he doesn't stumble, because he sees the light of this world.Jesus answered, `Are there not twelve hours in the day? if any one may walk in the day, he doth not stumble, because the light of this world he doth see;"Are there not twelve hours in the day?" replied Jesus. "If any one walks in the daytime, he does not stumble because he sees the light of this world.
John 11:10But if a man walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light isn't in him."and if any one may walk in the night, he stumbleth, because the light is not in him.`But if a man walks by night, he does stumble, because the light is not in him."
John 11:11He said these things, and after that, he said to them, "Our friend, Lazarus, has fallen asleep, but I am going so that I may awake him out of sleep."These things he said, and after this he saith to them, `Lazarus our friend hath fallen asleep, but I go on that I may awake him;`He said this, and afterwards He added, "Our friend Lazarus is sleeping, but I will go and wake him."
John 11:12The disciples therefore said to him, "Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover."therefore said his disciples, `Sir, if he hath fallen asleep, he will be saved;`"Master," said the disciples, "if he is asleep he will recover."
John 11:13Now Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that he spoke of taking rest in sleep.but Jesus had spoken about his death, but they thought that about the repose of sleep he speaketh.Now Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought He referred to the rest taken in ordinary sleep.
John 11:14So Jesus said to them plainly then, "Lazarus is dead.Then, therefore, Jesus said to them freely, `Lazarus hath died;So then He told them plainly,
John 11:15I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, so that you may believe. Nevertheless, let's go to him."and I rejoice, for your sake, (that ye may believe,) that I was not there; but we may go to him;`"Lazarus is dead; and for your sakes I am glad I was not there, in order that you may believe. But let us go to him."
John 11:16Thomas therefore, who is called Didymus, said to his fellow disciples, "Let's go also, that we may die with him."therefore said Thomas, who is called Didymus, to the fellow-disciples, `We may go we also, that we may die with him,`"Let us go also," Thomas, the Twin, said to his fellow disciples, "that we may die with him."
John 11:17So when Jesus came, he found that he had been in the tomb four days already.Jesus, therefore, having come, found him having been four days already in the tomb.On His arrival Jesus found that Lazarus had already been three days in the tomb.
John 11:18Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, about fifteen stadia away.And Bethany was nigh to Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off,Bethany was near Jerusalem, the distance being a little less than two miles;
John 11:19Many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary, to console them concerning their brother.and many of the Jews had come unto Martha and Mary, that they might comfort them concerning their brother;and a considerable number of the Jews were with Martha and Mary, having come to express sympathy with them on the death of their brother.
John 11:20Therefore Martha, when she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met him, but Mary stayed in the house.Martha, therefore, when she heard that Jesus doth come, met him, and Mary kept sitting in the house.Martha, however, as soon as she heard the tidings, "Jesus is coming," went to meet Him; but Mary remained sitting in the house.
John 11:21Therefore Martha said to Jesus, "Lord, if you would have been here, my brother wouldn't have died.Martha, therefore, said unto Jesus, `Sir, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died;So Martha came and spoke to Jesus. "Master, if you had been here," she said, "my brother would not have died.
John 11:22Even now I know that, whatever you ask of God, God will give you."but even now, I have known that whatever thou mayest ask of God, God will give to thee;`And even now I know that whatever you ask God for, God will give you."
John 11:23Jesus said to her, "Your brother will rise again."Jesus saith to her, `Thy brother shall rise again.`"Your brother shall rise again," replied Jesus.
John 11:24Martha said to him, "I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day."Martha saith to him, `I have known that he will rise again, in the rising again in the last day;`"I know," said Martha, "that he will rise again at the resurrection, on the last day."
John 11:25Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me, though he die, yet will he live.Jesus said to her, `I am the rising again, and the life; he who is believing in me, even if he may die, shall live;"I am the Resurrection and the Life," said Jesus; "he who believes in me, even if he has died, he shall live;
John 11:26Whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?"and every one who is living and believing in me shall not die to the age;and every one who is living and is a believer in me shall never, never die. Do you believe this?"
John 11:27She said to him, "Yes, Lord. I have come to believe that you are the Christ, God's Son, he who comes into the world."believest thou this?` she saith to him, `Yes, sir, I have believed that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, who is coming to the world.`"Yes, Master," she replied; "I thoroughly believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who was to come into the world."
John 11:28When she had said this, she went away, and called Mary, her sister, secretly, saying, "The Teacher is here, and is calling you."And these things having said, she went away, and called Mary her sister privately, saying, `The Teacher is present, and doth call thee;`After saying this, she went and called her sister Mary privately, telling her, "The Rabbi is here and is asking for you."
John 11:29She, when she heard this, arose quickly, and went to him.she, when she heard, riseth up quickly, and doth come to him;So she, on hearing that, rose up quickly to go to Him.
John 11:30Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was in the place where Martha met him.and Jesus had not yet come to the village, but was in the place where Martha met him;Now Jesus was not yet come into the village, but was still at the place where Martha had met Him.
John 11:31Then the Jews who were with her in the house, and were consoling her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up quickly and went out, followed her, saying, "She is going to the tomb to weep there."the Jews, therefore, who were with her in the house, and were comforting her, having seen Mary that she rose up quickly and went forth, followed her, saying `She doth go away to the tomb, that she may weep there.`So the Jews who were with Mary in the house sympathizing with her, when they saw that she had risen hastily and had gone out, followed her, supposing that she was going to the tomb to weep aloud there.
John 11:32Mary therefore, when she came to where Jesus was, and saw him, fell down at his feet, saying to him, "Lord, if you would have been here, my brother wouldn't have died."Mary, therefore, when she came where Jesus was, having seen him, fell at his feet, saying to him, `Sir, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died;`Mary then, when she came to Jesus and saw Him, fell at His feet and exclaimed, "Master, if you had been here, my brother would not have died."
John 11:33When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews weeping who came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled,Jesus, therefore, when he saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her weeping, did groan in the spirit, and troubled himself, and he said,Seeing her weeping aloud, and the Jews in like manner weeping who had come with her, Jesus, curbing the strong emotion of His spirit,
John 11:34and said, "Where have you laid him?" They told him, "Lord, come and see."`Where have ye laid him?` they say to him, `Sir, come and see;`though deeply troubled, asked them, "Where have you laid him?" "Master, come and see," was their reply.
John 11:35Jesus wept.Jesus wept.Jesus wept.
John 11:36The Jews therefore said, "See how much affection he had for him!"The Jews, therefore, said, `Lo, how he was loving him!`"See how dear he held him," said the Jews.
John 11:37Some of them said, "Couldn't this man, who opened the eyes of him who was blind, have also caused that this man wouldn't die?"and certain of them said, `Was not this one, who did open the eyes of the blind man, able to cause that also this one might not have died?`But others of them asked, "Was this man who opened the blind man's eyes unable to prevent this man from dying?"
John 11:38Jesus therefore, again groaning in himself, came to the tomb. Now it was a cave, and a stone lay against it.Jesus, therefore, again groaning in himself, cometh to the tomb, and it was a cave, and a stone was lying upon it,Jesus, however, again restraining His strong feeling, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone had been laid against the mouth of it.
John 11:39Jesus said, "Take away the stone." Martha, the sister of him who was dead, said to him, "Lord, by this time there is a stench, for he has been dead four days."Jesus saith, `Take ye away the stone;` the sister of him who hath died Martha saith to him, `Sir, already he stinketh, for he is four days dead;`"Take away the stone," said Jesus. Martha, the sister of the dead man, exclaimed, "Master, by this time there is a foul smell; for it is three days since he died."
John 11:40Jesus said to her, "Didn't I tell you that if you believed, you would see God's glory?"Jesus saith to her, `Said I not to thee, that if thou mayest believe, thou shalt see the glory of God?`"Did I not promise you," replied Jesus, "that if you believe, you shall see the glory of God?"
John 11:41So they took away the stone from the place where the dead man was lying. Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, "Father, I thank you that you listened to me.They took away, therefore, the stone where the dead was laid, and Jesus lifted his eyes upwards, and said, `Father, I thank Thee, that Thou didst hear me;So they removed the stone. Then Jesus lifted up His eyes and said, "Father, I thank Thee that Thou hast heard me.
John 11:42I know that you always listen to me, but because of the multitude that stands around I said this, that they may believe that you sent me."and I knew that Thou always dost hear me, but, because of the multitude that is standing by, I said [it], that they may believe that Thou didst send me.`I know that Thou always hearest me; but for the sake of the crowd standing round I have said this that they may believe that Thou didst send me."
John 11:43When he had said this, he cried with a loud voice, "Lazarus, come out!"And these things saying, with a loud voice he cried out, `Lazarus, come forth;`After speaking thus, He called out in a loud voice, "Lazarus, come out."
John 11:44He who was dead came out, bound hand and foot with wrappings, and his face was wrapped around with a cloth. Jesus said to them, "Free him, and let him go."and he who died came forth, being bound feet and hands with grave-clothes, and his visage with a napkin was bound about; Jesus saith to them, `Loose him, and suffer to go.`The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped in cloths, and his face wrapped round with a towel. "Untie him," said Jesus, "and let him go free."
John 11:45Therefore many of the Jews, who came to Mary and saw that which Jesus did, believed in him.Many, therefore, of the Jews who came unto Mary, and beheld what Jesus did, believed in him;Thereupon a considerable number of the Jews namely those who had come to Mary and had witnessed His deeds became believers in Him;
John 11:46But some of them went away to the Pharisees, and told them the things which Jesus had done.but certain of them went away unto the Pharisees, and told them what Jesus did;though some of them went off to the Pharisees and told them what He had done.
John 11:47The chief priests therefore and the Pharisees gathered a council, and said, "What are we doing? For this man does many signs.the chief priests, therefore, and the Pharisees, gathered together a sanhedrim, and said, `What may we do? because this man doth many signs?Therefore the High Priests and the Pharisees held a meeting of the Sanhedrin. "What steps are we taking?" they asked one another; "for this man is performing a great number of miracles.
John 11:48If we leave him alone like this, everyone will believe in him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation."if we may let him alone thus, all will believe in him; and the Romans will come, and will take away both our place and nation.`If we leave him alone in this way, everybody will believe in him, and the Romans will come and blot out both our city and our nation."
John 11:49But a certain one of them, Caiaphas, being high priest that year, said to them, "You know nothing at all,and a certain one of them, Caiaphas, being chief priest of that year, said to them, `Ye have not known anything,But one of them, named Caiaphas, being High Priest that year, said, "You know nothing about it.
John 11:50nor do you take account that it is advantageous for us that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation not perish."nor reason that it is good for us that one man may die for the people, and not the whole nation perish.`You do not reflect that it is to your interest that one man should die for the people rather than the whole nation perish."
John 11:51Now he didn't say this of himself, but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation,And this he said not of himself, but being chief priest of that year, he did prophesy that Jesus was about to die for the nation,It was not as a mere man that he thus spoke. But being High Priest that year he was inspired to declare that Jesus was to die for the nation,
John 11:52and not for the nation only, but that he might also gather together into one the children of God who are scattered abroad.and not for the nation only, but that also the children of God, who have been scattered abroad, he may gather together into one.and not for the nation only, but in order to unite into one body all the far-scattered children of God.
John 11:53So from that day forth they took counsel that they might put him to death.From that day, therefore, they took counsel together that they may kill him;So from that day forward they planned and schemed in order to put Him to death.
John 11:54Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews, but departed from there into the country near the wilderness, into a city called Ephraim. He stayed there with his disciples.Jesus, therefore, was no more freely walking among the Jews, but went away thence to the region nigh the wilderness, to a city called Ephraim, and there he tarried with his disciples.Therefore Jesus no longer went about openly among the Jews, but He left that neighbourhood and went into the district near the Desert, to a town called Ephraim, and remained there with the disciples.
John 11:55Now the Passover of the Jews was at hand. Many went up to Jerusalem out of the country before the Passover, to purify themselves.And the passover of the Jews was nigh, and many went up to Jerusalem out of the country before the passover, that they might purify themselves;The Jewish Passover was coming near, and many from that district went up to Jerusalem before the Passover, to purify themselves.
John 11:56Then they sought for Jesus and spoke one with another, as they stood in the temple, "What do you think? Isn't he coming to the feast?"they were seeking, therefore, Jesus, and said one with another, standing in the temple, `What doth appear to you that he may not come to the feast?`They therefore looked out for Jesus, and asked one another as they stood in the Temple, "What do you think? will he come to the Festival at all?"
John 11:57Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had commanded that if anyone knew where he was, he should report it, that they might seize him.and both the chief priests and the Pharisees had given a command, that if any one may know where he is, he may shew [it], so that they may seize him.Now the High Priests and the Pharisees had issued orders that if any one knew where He was, he should give information, so that they might arrest Him.
