John 18:1When Jesus had spoken these words, he went forth with his disciples over the brook Kidron, where was a garden, into which he entered, himself and his disciples. These things having said, Jesus went forth with his disciples beyond the brook of Kedron, where was a garden, into which he entered, himself and his disciples,After offering this prayer Jesus went out with His disciples to a place on the further side of the Ravine of the Cedars, where there was a garden which He entered Himself and His disciples.
John 18:2Now Judas, who betrayed him, also knew the place, for Jesus often resorted there with his disciples.and Judas also, who delivered him up, had known the place, because many times did Jesus assemble there with his disciples. Now Judas also, who at that very time was betraying Him, knew the place, for Jesus had often resorted there with His disciples.
John 18:3Judas then, having taken a detachment of soldiers and officers from the chief priests and the Pharisees, came there with lanterns, torches, and weapons.Judas, therefore, having taken the band and officers out of the chief priests and Pharisees, doth come thither with torches and lamps, and weapons; So Judas, followed by the battalion and by a detachment of the Temple police sent by the High Priests and Pharisees, came there with torches and lamps and weapons.
John 18:4Jesus therefore, knowing all the things that were coming on him, went forth, and said to them, "Who are you looking for?"Jesus, therefore, knowing all things that are coming upon him, having gone forth, said to them, `Whom do ye seek?`Jesus therefore, knowing all that was about to befall Him, went out to meet them. "Who are you looking for?" He asked them.
John 18:5They answered him, "Jesus of Nazareth." Jesus said to them, "I AM." Judas also, who betrayed him, was standing with them.they answered him, `Jesus the Nazarene;` Jesus saith to them, `I am [he];` and Judas who delivered him up was standing with them;"For Jesus the Nazarene," was the answer. "I am he," He replied. (Now Judas who was betraying Him was also standing with them.)
John 18:6When therefore he said to them, "I AM," they went backward, and fell to the ground.when, therefore, he said to them `I am [he],` they went away backward, and fell to the ground. As soon then as He said to them, "I am he," they went backwards and fell to the ground.
John 18:7Again therefore he asked them, "Who are you looking for?" They said, "Jesus of Nazareth."Again, therefore, he questioned them, `Whom do ye seek?` and they said, `Jesus the Nazarene;`Again therefore He asked them, "Who are you looking for?" "For Jesus the Nazarene," they said.
John 18:8Jesus answered, "I told you that I AM. If therefore you seek me, let these go their way,"Jesus answered, `I said to you that I am [he]; if, then, me ye seek, suffer these to go away;`"I have told you," replied Jesus, "that I am he. If therefore you are looking for me, let these my disciples go their way."
John 18:9that the word might be fulfilled which he spoke, "Of those whom you have given me, I have lost none."that the word might be fulfilled that he said `Those whom Thou hast given to me, I did not lose of them even one.`He made this request in order that the words He had spoken might be fulfilled, "As for those whom Thou hast given me, I have not lost one."
John 18:10Simon Peter therefore, having a sword, drew it, and struck the high priest's servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant's name was Malchus.Simon Peter, therefore, having a sword, drew it, and struck the chief priest`s servant, and cut off his right ear and the name of the servant was MalchusSimon Peter, however, having a sword, drew it, and, aiming at the High Priest's servant, cut off his right ear. The servant's name was Malchus.
John 18:11Jesus therefore said to Peter, "Put up the sword into its sheath. The cup which the Father has given me, shall I not drink it?"Jesus, therefore, said to Peter, `Put the sword into the sheath; the cup that the Father hath given to me, may I not drink it?`Jesus therefore said to Peter, "Put back your sword. Shall I refuse to drink the cup of sorrow which the Father has given me to drink?"
John 18:12So the detachment, the commanding officer, and the officers of the Jews, seized Jesus and bound him,The band, therefore, and the captain, and the officers of the Jews, took hold on Jesus, and bound him,So the battalion and their tribune and the Jewish police closed in, and took Jesus and bound Him.
John 18:13and led him to Annas first, for he was father-in-law to Caiaphas, who was high priest that year.and they led him away to Annas first, for he was father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was chief priest of that year,They then brought Him to Annas first; for Annas was the father-in-law of Caiaphas who was High Priest that year.
John 18:14Now it was Caiaphas who gave counsel to the Jews, that it was expedient that one man should die for the people.and Caiaphas was he who gave counsel to the Jews, that it is good for one man to perish for the people.(It was this Caiaphas who had advised the Jews, saying, "It is to your interest that one man should die for the People.")
John 18:15Simon Peter followed Jesus, as did another disciple. Now that disciple was known to the high priest, and entered in with Jesus into the court of the high priest; And following Jesus was Simon Peter, and the other disciple, and that disciple was known to the chief priest, and he entered with Jesus to the hall of the chief priest,Meanwhile Simon Peter was following Jesus, and so also was another disciple. The latter was known to the High Priest, and went in with Jesus into the court of the High Priest's palace.
John 18:16but Peter was standing at the door outside. So the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to her who kept the door, and brought in Peter.and Peter was standing at the door without, therefore went forth the other disciple who was known to the chief priest, and he spake to the female keeping the door, and he brought in Peter. But Peter remained standing outside the door, till the disciple who was acquainted with the High Priest came out and induced the portress to let Peter in.
John 18:17Then the maid who kept the door said to Peter, "Are you also one of this man's disciples?" He said, "I am not."Then said the maid keeping the door to Peter, `Art thou also of the disciples of this man?` he saith, `I am not;`This led the girl, the portress, to ask Peter, "Are you also one of this man's disciples?" "No, I am not," he replied.
John 18:18Now the servants and the officers were standing there, having made a fire of coals, for it was cold. They were warming themselves. Peter was with them, standing and warming himself.and the servants and the officers were standing, having made a fire of coals, because it was cold, and they were warming themselves, and Peter was standing with them, and warming himself. Now because it was cold the servants and the police had lighted a charcoal fire, and were standing and warming themselves; and Peter too remained with them, standing and warming himself.
John 18:19The high priest therefore asked Jesus of his disciples, and of his teaching. The chief priests, therefore, questioned Jesus concerning his disciples, and concerning his teaching; So the High Priest questioned Jesus about His disciples and His teaching.
John 18:20Jesus answered him, "I spoke openly to the world. I always taught in synagogues, and in the temple, where the Jews always meet. I said nothing in secret.Jesus answered him, `I spake freely to the world, I did always teach in a synagogue, and in the temple, where the Jews do always come together; and in secret I spake nothing;"As for me," replied Jesus, "I have spoken openly to the world. I have continually taught in some synagogue or in the Temple where all the Jews are wont to assemble, and I have said nothing in secret.
John 18:21Why do you ask me? Ask those who have heard me what I said to them. Behold, these know the things which I said."why me dost thou question? question those having heard what I spake to them; lo, these have known what I said.`Why do you question me? Question those who heard what it was I said to them: these witnesses here know what I said."
John 18:22When he had said this, one of the officers standing by slapped Jesus with his hand, saying, "Do you answer the high priest like that?"And he having said these things, one of the officers standing by did give Jesus a slap, saying, `Thus dost thou answer the chief priest?`Upon His saying this, one of the officers standing by struck Him with his open hand, asking Him as he did so, "Is that the way you answer the High Priest?"
John 18:23Jesus answered him, "If I have spoken evil, testify of the evil; but if well, why do you beat me?"Jesus answered him, `If I spake ill, testify concerning the ill; and if well, why me dost thou smite?`"If I have spoken wrongly," replied Jesus, "bear witness to it as wrong; but if rightly, why that blow?"
John 18:24Annas sent him bound to Caiaphas, the high priest.Annas then sent him bound to Caiaphas the chief priest. So Annas sent Him bound to Caiaphas the High Priest.
John 18:25Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. They said therefore to him, "Are you also one of his disciples?" He denied it, and said, "I am not."And Simon Peter was standing and warming himself, they said then to him, `Art thou also of his disciples?` he denied, and said, `I am not.`But Simon Peter remained standing and warming himself, and this led to their asking him, "Are you also one of his disciples?" He denied it, and said, "No, I am not."
John 18:26One of the servants of the high priest, being a relative of him whose ear Peter cut off, said, "Didn't I see you in the garden with him?"One of the servants of the chief priest, being kinsman of him whose ear Peter cut off, saith, `Did not I see thee in the garden with him?`One of the High Priest's servants, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, said, "Did I not see you in the garden with him?"
John 18:27Peter therefore denied again, and immediately the rooster crowed.again, therefore, Peter denied, and immediately a cock crew.Once more Peter denied it, and immediately a cock crowed.
John 18:28They led Jesus therefore from Caiaphas into the Praetorium. It was early, and they themselves didn't enter into the Praetorium, that they might not be defiled, but might eat the Passover. They led, therefore, Jesus from Caiaphas to the praetorium, and it was early, and they themselves did not enter into the praetorium, that they might not be defiled, but that they might eat the passover; So they brought Jesus from Caiaphas's house to the Praetorium. It was the early morning, and they would not enter the Praetorium themselves for fear of defilement, and in order that they might be able to eat the Passover.
John 18:29Pilate therefore went out to them, and said, "What accusation do you bring against this man?"Pilate, therefore, went forth unto them, and said, `What accusation do ye bring against this man?`Accordingly Pilate came out to them and inquired, "What accusation have you to bring against this man?"
John 18:30They answered him, "If this man weren't an evildoer, we wouldn't have delivered him up to you."they answered and said to him, `If he were not an evil doer, we had not delivered him to thee.`"If the man were not a criminal," they replied, "we would not have handed him over to you."
John 18:31Pilate therefore said to them, "Take him yourselves, and judge him according to your law." Therefore the Jews said to him, "It is not lawful for us to put anyone to death,"Pilate, therefore, said to them, `Take ye him ye and according to your law judge him;` the Jews, therefore, said to him, `It is not lawful to us to put any one to death;`"Take him yourselves," said Pilate, "and judge him by your Law." "We have no power," replied the Jews, "to put any man to death."
John 18:32that the word of Jesus might be fulfilled, which he spoke, signifying by what kind of death he should die.that the word of Jesus might be fulfilled which he said, signifying by what death he was about to die. They said this that the words might be fulfilled in which Jesus predicted the kind of death He was to die.
John 18:33Pilate therefore entered again into the Praetorium, called Jesus, and said to him, "Are you the King of the Jews?"Pilate, therefore, entered into the praetorium again, and called Jesus, and said to him, `Thou art the King of the Jews?`Re-entering the Praetorium, therefore, Pilate called Jesus and asked Him, "Are *you* the King of the Jews?"
John 18:34Jesus answered him, "Do you say this of yourself, or did others tell it to you concerning me?"Jesus answered him, `From thyself dost thou say this? or did others say it to thee about me?`"Do you say this of yourself, or have others told it you about me?" replied Jesus.
John 18:35Pilate answered, "Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests delivered you to me. What have you done?"Pilate answered, `Am I a Jew? thy nation, and the chief priests did deliver thee up to me; what didst thou?`"Am I a Jew?" exclaimed Pilate; "it is your own nation and the High Priests who have handed you over to me. What have you done?"
John 18:36Jesus answered, "My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, then my servants would fight, that I wouldn't be delivered to the Jews. But now my kingdom is not from here."Jesus answered, `My kingdom is not of this world; if my kingdom were of this world, my officers had struggled that I might not be delivered up to Jews; but now my kingdom is not from hence.`"My kingdom," replied Jesus, "does not belong to this world. If my kingdom did belong to this world, my subjects would have resolutely fought to save me from being delivered up to the Jews. But, as a matter of fact, my kingdom has not this origin."
John 18:37Pilate therefore said to him, "Are you a king then?" Jesus answered, "You say that I am a king. To this end have I been born, and to this end I have come into the world, that I should testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice."Pilate, therefore, said to him, `Art thou then a king?` Jesus answered, `Thou dost say [it]; because a king I am, I for this have been born, and for this I have come to the world, that I may testify to the truth; every one who is of the truth, doth hear my voice.`"So then *you* are a king!" rejoined Pilate. "Yes," said Jesus, "you say truly that I am a king. For this purpose I was born, and for this purpose I have come into the world to give testimony for the truth. Every one who is a friend of the truth listens to my voice."
John 18:38Pilate said to him, "What is truth?" When he had said this, he went out again to the Jews, and said to them, "I find no basis for a charge against him.Pilate saith to him, `What is truth?` and this having said, again he went forth unto the Jews, and saith to them, `I do find no fault in him;"What is truth?" said Pilate. But no sooner had he spoken the words than he went out again to the Jews and told them, "I find no crime in him.
John 18:39But you have a custom, that I should release to you one at the Passover. Therefore do you desire that I release to you the King of the Jews?"and ye have a custom that I shall release to you one in the passover; will ye, therefore, [that] I shall release to you the king of the Jews?`But you have a custom that I should release one prisoner to you at the Passover. So shall I release to you the King of the Jews?"
John 18:40Then they all cried out again, saying, "Not this man, but Barabbas!" Now Barabbas was a robber.therefore they all cried out again, saying, `Not this one but Barabbas;` and Barabbas was a robber. With a roar of voices they again cried out, saying, "Not this man, but Barabbas!" Now Barabbas was a robber.
