Romans 13:1Let every soul to the higher authorities be subject, for there is no authority except from God, and the authorities existing are appointed by God,Let every soul be in subjection to the higher powers: for there is no power but of God; and the [powers] that be are ordained of God. Let every individual be obedient to those who rule over him; for no one is a ruler except by God's permission, and our present rulers have had their rank and power assigned to them by Him.
Romans 13:2so that he who is setting himself against the authority, against God`s ordinance hath resisted; and those resisting, to themselves shall receive judgment. Therefore he that resisteth the power, withstandeth the ordinance of God: and they that withstand shall receive to themselves judgment. Therefore the man who rebels against his ruler is resisting God's will; and those who thus resist will bring punishment upon themselves.
Romans 13:3For those ruling are not a terror to the good works, but to the evil; and dost thou wish not to be afraid of the authority? that which is good be doing, and thou shalt have praise from it,For rulers are not a terror to the good work, but to the evil. And wouldest thou have no fear of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise from the same: For judges and magistrates are to be feared not by right-doers but by wrong-doers. You desire do you not? to have no reason to fear your ruler. Well, do the thing that is right, and then he will commend you.
Romans 13:4for of God it is a ministrant to thee for good; and if that which is evil thou mayest do, be fearing, for not in vain doth it bear the sword; for of God it is a ministrant, an avenger for wrath to him who is doing that which is evil.for he is a minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is a minister of God, an avenger for wrath to him that doeth evil. For he is God's servant for your benefit. But if you do what is wrong, be afraid. He does not wear the sword to no purpose: he is God's servant an administrator to inflict punishment upon evil-doers.
Romans 13:5Wherefore it is necessary to be subject, not only because of the wrath, but also because of the conscience,Wherefore [ye] must needs be in subjection, not only because of the wrath, but also for conscience' sake. We must obey therefore, not only in order to escape punishment, but also for conscience' sake.
Romans 13:6for because of this also pay ye tribute; for servants of God they are, on this very thing attending continually; For this cause ye pay tribute also; for they are ministers of God's service, attending continually upon this very thing. Why, this is really the reason you pay taxes; for tax-gatherers are ministers of God, devoting their energies to this very work.
Romans 13:7render, therefore, to all [their] dues; to whom tribute, the tribute; to whom custom, the custom; to whom fear, the fear; to whom honour, the honour.Render to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute [is due]; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honor to whom honor. Pay promptly to all men what is due to them: taxes to those to whom taxes are due, toll to those to whom toll is due, respect to those to whom respect is due, honour to those to whom honour is due.
Romans 13:8To no one owe anything, except to love one another; for he who is loving the other law he hath fulfilled,Owe no man anything, save to love one another: for he that loveth his neighbor hath fulfilled the law. Owe nothing to any one except mutual love; for he who loves his fellow man has satisfied the demands of Law.
Romans 13:9for, `Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt do no murder, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false testimony, Thou shalt not covet;` and if there is any other command, in this word it is summed up, in this: `Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself;`For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not covet, and if there be any other commandment, it is summed up in this word, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. For the precepts, "Thou shalt not commit adultery," "Thou shalt do no murder," "Thou shalt not steal," "Thou shalt not covet," and all other precepts, are summed up in this one command, "Thou shalt love thy fellow man as much as thou lovest thyself."
Romans 13:10the love to the neighbor doth work no ill; the love, therefore, [is] the fulness of law.Love worketh no ill to his neighbor: love therefore is the fulfilment of the law. Love avoids doing any wrong to one's fellow man, and is therefore complete obedience to Law.
Romans 13:11And this, knowing the time, that for us, the hour already [is] to be aroused out of sleep, for now nearer [is] our salvation than when we did believe; And this, knowing the season, that already it is time for you to awake out of sleep: for now is salvation nearer to us than when we [first] believed. Carry out these injunctions because you know the critical period at which we are living, and that it is now high time, to rouse yourselves from sleep; for salvation is now nearer to us than when we first became believers.
Romans 13:12the night did advance, and the day came nigh; let us lay aside, therefore, the works of the darkness, and let us put on the armour of the light; The night is far spent, and the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armor of light. The night is far advanced, and day is about to dawn. We must therefore lay aside the deeds of darkness, and clothe ourselves with the armour of Light.
Romans 13:13as in day-time, let us walk becomingly; not in revellings and drunkennesses, not in chamberings and lasciviousnesses, not in strife and emulation;Let us walk becomingly, as in the day; not in revelling and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and jealousy. Living as we do in broad daylight, let us conduct ourselves becomingly, not indulging in revelry and drunkenness, nor in lust and debauchery, nor in quarrelling and jealousy.
Romans 13:14but put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and for the flesh take no forethought for desires. But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to [fulfil] the lusts [thereof]. On the contrary, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for gratifying your earthly cravings.
