1st-Kings 20:1 | And Ben-Hadad king of Aram hath gathered all his force, and thirty and two kings [are] with him, and horse and chariot, and he goeth up and layeth siege against Samaria, and fighteth with it, | Now Ben-hadad, king of Aram, got all his army together, and thirty-two kings with him, and horses and carriages of war; he went up and made war on Samaria, shutting it in. | And Benadad, king of Syria, gathered together all his host, and there were two and thirty kings with him, and horses, and chariots: and going up, he fought against Samaria, and besieged it. |
1st-Kings 20:2 | and sendeth messengers unto Ahab king of Israel, to the city, | And he sent representatives into the town to Ahab, king of Israel; | And, sending messengers to Achab king of Israel into the city, |
1st-Kings 20:3 | and saith to him, `Thus said Ben-Hadad, `Thy silver and thy gold are mine, and thy wives and thy sons the best are mine.` | And they said to him, Ben-hadad says, Your silver and your gold are mine; and your wives and children are mine. | He said: Thus saith Benadad: Thy silver, and thy gold is mine: and thy wives, and thy goodliest children are mine. |
1st-Kings 20:4 | And the king of Israel answereth and saith, `According to thy word, my lord, O king: I [am] thine, and all that I have.` | And the king of Israel sent him an answer saying, As you say, my lord king, I am yours with all I have. | And the king of Israel answered: According to thy word, my lord 0 king, I am thine, and all that I have. |
1st-Kings 20:5 | And the messengers turn back and say, `Thus spake Ben-Hadad, saying, Surely I sent unto thee, saying, Thy silver, and thy gold, and thy wives, and thy sons, to me thou dost give; | Then the representatives came back again, and said, These are the words of Ben-hadad: I sent to you saying, Give up to me your silver and your gold, your wives and your children; | And the messengers came again, and said: Thus saith Benadad, who sent us unto thee: Thy silver, and thy gold, and thy wives, and thy children thou shalt deliver up to me. |
1st-Kings 20:6 | for if, at this time to-morrow, I send my servants unto thee then they have searched thy house, and the houses of thy servants, and it hath been, every desirable thing of thine eyes they place in their hand, and have taken away.` | But I will send my servants to you tomorrow about this time, to make a search through your house and the houses of your people, and everything which is pleasing in your eyes they will take away in their hands. | To morrow therefore at this same hour I will send my servants to thee, and they shall search thy house, and the houses of thy servants: and all that pleaseth them, they shall put in their hands, and take away. |
1st-Kings 20:7 | And the king of Israel calleth to all the elders of the land, and saith, `Know, I pray you, and see that evil this [one] is seeking, for he sent unto me for my wives, and for my sons, and for my silver, and for my gold, and I withheld not from him.` | Then the king of Israel sent for all the responsible men of the land, and said, Now will you take note and see the evil purpose of this man: he sent for my wives and my children, my silver and my gold, and I did not keep them back. | And the king of Israel called all the ancients of the land, and said: Mark, and see that he layeth snares for us. For he sent to me for my wives, and for my children, and for my silver and gold: and I said not nay. |
1st-Kings 20:8 | And all the elders and all the people say unto him, `Do not hearken, nor consent.` | And all the responsible men and the people said to him, Do not give attention to him or do what he says. | And all the ancients, and all the people said to him: Hearken not to him, nor consent to him. |
1st-Kings 20:9 | And he saith to the messengers of Ben-Hadad, `Say to my lord the king, All that thou didst send for unto thy servant at the first I do, and this thing I am not able to do;` and the messengers go and take him back word. | So he said to the representatives of Ben-hadad, Say to my lord the king, All the orders you sent the first time I will do; but this thing I may not do. And the representatives went back with this answer. | Wherefore he answered the messengers of Benadad: Tell my lord the king: All that thou didst send for to me thy servant at first, I will do: but this thing I cannot do. |
1st-Kings 20:10 | And Ben-Hadad sendeth unto him, and saith, `Thus do the gods to me, and thus do they add, if the dust of Samaria suffice for handfuls for all the people who [are] at my feet.` | Then Ben-hadad sent to him, saying, May the gods' punishment be on me if there is enough of the dust of Samaria for all the people at my feet to take some in their hands. | And the messengers returning brought him word. And he sent again and said: Such and such things may the gods do to me, and more may they add, if the dust of Samaria shall suffice for handfuls for all the people that follow me. |
1st-Kings 20:11 | And the king of Israel answereth and saith, `Speak ye: let not him who is girding on boast himself as him who is loosing [his armour].` | And the king of Israel said in answer, Say to him, The time for loud talk is not when a man is putting on his arms, but when he is taking them off. | And the king of Israel answering, said: Tell him: Let not the girded boast himself as the ungirded. |
1st-Kings 20:12 | And it cometh to pass at the hearing of this word and he is drinking, he and the kings, in the booths that he saith unto his servants, `Set yourselves;` and they set themselves against the city. | Now when this answer was given to Ben-hadad, he was drinking with the kings in the tents, and he said to his men, Take up your positions. So they put themselves in position for attacking the town. | And it came to pass, when Benadad heard this word, that he and the kings were drinking in pavilions, and he said to his servants: Beset the city. And they beset it. |
1st-Kings 20:13 | And lo, a certain prophet hath come nigh unto Ahab king of Israel, and saith, `Thus said Jehovah, `Hast thou seen all this great multitude? lo, I am giving it into thy hand to-day, and thou hast known that I [am] Jehovah.` | Then a prophet came up to Ahab, king of Israel, and said, The Lord says, Have you seen all this great army? See, I will give it into your hands today, and you will see that I am the Lord. | And behold a prophet coming to Achab king of Israel, said to him: Thus saith the Lord: Hast thou seen all this exceeding great multitude, behold I will deliver them into thy hand this day: that thou mayest know that I am the Lord. |
1st-Kings 20:14 | And Ahab saith, `By whom?` and he saith, `Thus said Jehovah, By the young men of the heads of the provinces;` and he saith, `Who doth direct the battle?` and he saith, `Thou.` | And Ahab said, By whom? And he said, The Lord says, By the servants of the chiefs who are over the divisions of the land. Then he said, By whom is the fighting to be started? And he made answer, By you. | And Achab said: By whom? And he said to him: Thus saith the Lord: By the servants of the princes of the provinces. And he said: Who shall begin to fight? And he said: Thou. |
1st-Kings 20:15 | And he inspecteth the young men of the heads of the provinces, and they are two hundred, two and thirty, and after them he hath inspecteth the whole of the people, all the sons of Israel, seven thousand, | Then he got together the servants of all the chiefs who were over the divisions of the land, two hundred and thirty-two of them; and after them, he got together all the people, all the children of Israel, seven thousand. | So he mustered the servants of the princes of the provinces, and he found the number of two hundred and thirty-two: and he mustered after them the people, all the children of Israel, seven thousand: |
1st-Kings 20:16 | and they go out at noon, and Ben-Hadad is drinking drunk in the booths, he and the kings, the thirty and two kings, helping him. | And in the middle of the day they went out. But Ben-hadad was drinking in the tents with the thirty-two kings who were helping him. | And they went out at noon. But Benadad was drinking himself drunk in his pavilion, and the two and thirty kings with him, who were come to help him. |
1st-Kings 20:17 | And the young men of the heads of the provinces go out at the first, and Ben-Hadad sendeth, and they declare to him, saying, `Men have come out of Samaria.` | And the servants of the chiefs who were over the divisions of the land went forward first; and when Ben-hadad sent out, they gave him the news, saying, Men have come out from Samaria. | And the servants of the princes of the provinces went out first. And Benadad sent. And they told him, saying: There are men come out of Samaria. |
1st-Kings 20:18 | And he saith, `If for peace they have come out catch them alive; and if for battle they have come out alive catch them.` | And he said, If they have come out for peace, take them living, and if they have come out for war, take them living. | And he said: Whether they come for peace, take them alive: or whether they come to fight, take them alive. |
1st-Kings 20:19 | And these have gone out of the city the young men of the heads of the provinces and the force that [is] after them, | So the servants of the chiefs of the divisions of the land went out of the town, with the army coming after them. | So the servants of the princes of the provinces went out, and the rest of the army followed: |
1st-Kings 20:20 | and smite each his man, and Aram fleeth, and Israel pursueth them, and Ben-Hadad king of Aram escapeth on a horse, and the horsemen; | And every one of them put his man to death, and the Aramaeans went in flight with Israel after them; and Ben-hadad, king of Aram, got away safely on a horse with his horsemen. | And every one slew the man that came against him: and the Syrians fled, and Israel pursued after them. And Benadad king of Syria fled away on horseback with his horsemen. |
1st-Kings 20:21 | and the king of Israel goeth out, and smiteth the horses, and the charioteers, and hath smitten among the Aramaeans a great smiting. | And the king of Israel went out and took the horses and the war-carriages, and made great destruction among the Aramaeans. | But the king of Israel going out overthrew the horses and chariots, and slew the Syrians with a great slaughter. |
1st-Kings 20:22 | And the prophet cometh nigh unto the king of Israel, and saith to him, `Go, strengthen thyself, and know and see that which thou dost, for at the turn of the year the king of Aram is coming up against thee.` | Then the prophet came up to the king of Israel, and said to him, Now make yourself strong, and take care what you do, or a year from now the king of Aram will come up against you again. | (And a prophet coming to the king of Israel, said to him: Go, and strengthen thyself, and know, and see what thou dost: for the next year the king of Syria will come up against thee.) |
1st-Kings 20:23 | And the servants of the king of Aram said unto him, `Gods of hills [are] their gods, therefore they were stronger than we; and yet, we fight with them in the plain are we not stronger than they? | Then the king of Aram's servants said to him, Their god is a god of the hills; that is why they were stronger than we: but if we make an attack on them in the lowlands, we will certainly be stronger than they. | But the servants of the king of Syria said to him: Their gods are gods of the hills, therefore they have overcome us: but it is better that we should fight against them in the plains, and we shall overcome them. |
1st-Kings 20:24 | `And this thing do thou: turn aside the kings each out of his place, and set captains in their stead; | This is what you have to do: take away the kings from their positions, and put captains in their places; | Do thou therefore this thing: Remove all the kings from thy army, and put captains in their stead: |
1st-Kings 20:25 | and thou, number to thee a force as the force that is fallen from thee, and horse for horse, and chariot for chariot, and we fight with them in the plain; are we not stronger than they?` and he hearkeneth to their voice, and doth so. | And get together another army like the one which came to destruction, horse for horse, and carriage for carriage; and let us make war on them in the lowlands, and certainly we will be stronger than they. And he gave ear to what they said, and did so. | And make up the number of soldiers that have been slain of thine, and horses according to the former horses, and chariots according to the chariots which thou hadst before: and we will fight against them in the plains, and thou shalt see that we shall overcome them. He believed their counsel and did so. |
1st-Kings 20:26 | And it cometh to pass at the turn of the year, that Ben-Hadad inspecteth the Aramaeans, and goeth up to Aphek, to battle with Israel, | So, a year later, Ben-hadad got the Aramaeans together and went up to Aphek to make war on Israel. | Wherefore at the return of the year, p Benadad mustered the Syrians, ancient up to Aphec, to fight against Israel. |
1st-Kings 20:27 | and the sons of Israel have been inspected, and supported, and go to meet them, and the sons of Israel encamp before them, like two flocks of goats, and the Aramaeans have filled the land. | And the children of Israel got themselves together, and food was made ready and they went against them; the tents of the children of Israel were like two little flocks of goats before them, but all the country was full of the Aramaeans. | And the children of Israel were mustered, and taking victuals went out on the other side, and camped over against them, like two little hocks of goats: but the Syrians filled the land. |
1st-Kings 20:28 | And there cometh nigh a man of God, and speaketh unto the king of Israel, and saith, `Thus said Jehovah, Because that the Aramaeans have said, God of hills [is] Jehovah, and He [is] not God of valleys I have given the whole of this great multitude into thy hand, and ye have known that I [am] Jehovah.` | And a man of God came up and said to the king of Israel, The Lord says, Because the Aramaeans have said, The Lord is a god of the hills and not of the valleys; I will give all this great army into your hands, and you will see that I am the Lord. | (And a man of God coming, said to the king of Israel: Thus saith the Lord: Because the Syrians have said: The Lord is God of the hills, but is not God of the valleys: I will deliver all this great multitude into thy hand, and you shall know that I am the Lord.) |
1st-Kings 20:29 | And they encamp one over-against another seven days, and it cometh to pass on the seventh day, that the battle draweth near, and the sons of Israel smite Aram a hundred thousand footmen in one day. | Now the two armies kept their positions facing one another for seven days. And on the seventh day the fight was started; and the children of Israel put to the sword a hundred thousand Aramaean footmen in one day. | And both sides set their armies in array one against the other seven days, and on the seventh day the battle was fought: and the children of Israel slew of the Syrians a hundred thousand footmen in one day. |
1st-Kings 20:30 | And those left flee to Aphek, unto the city, and the wall falleth on twenty and seven chief men who are left, and Ben-Hadad hath fled, and cometh in unto the city, into the innermost part. | But the rest went in flight to Aphek, into the town, where a wall came down on the twenty-seven thousand who were still living. And Ben-hadad went in flight into the town, into an inner room. | And they that remained fled to Aphec, into the city: and the wall fell upon seven and twenty thousand men, that were left. And Benadad fleeing went into the city, into a chamber that was within a chamber. |
1st-Kings 20:31 | And his servants say unto him, `Lo, we pray thee, we have heard that the kings of the house of Israel that they are kind kings; let us put, we pray thee, sackcloth on our loins, and ropes on our heads, and we go out unto the king of Israel; it may be he doth keep thee alive.` | Then his servants said to him, It is said that the kings of Israel are full of mercy: let us then put on haircloth, and cords on our heads, and go to the king of Israel; it may be that he will give you your life. | And his servants said to him: Behold, we have heard that the kings of the house of Israel are merciful: so let us put sackcloth on our loins, and ropes on our heads, and go out to the king of Israel: perhaps he will save our lives. |
1st-Kings 20:32 | And they gird sackcloth on their loins, and ropes [are] on their heads, and they come in unto the king of Israel, and say, `Thy servant Ben-Hadad hath said, Let me live, I pray thee;` and he saith, `Is he yet alive? he [is] my brother.` | So they put on haircloth, and cords on their heads, and came to the king of Israel and said, Your servant Ben-hadad says, Let me now keep my life. And he said, Is he still living? he is my brother. | So they girded sackcloth on their loins, and put ropes on their heads, and came to the king of Israel, and said to him: Thy servant Benadad saith: I beseech thee let me have my life. And he said: If he be yet alive he is my brother. |
1st-Kings 20:33 | And the men observe diligently, and hasten, and catch it from him, and say, `Thy brother Ben-Hadad;` and he saith, `Go ye in, bring him;` and Ben-Hadad cometh out unto him, and he causeth him to come up on the chariot. | Now the men took it as a sign, and quickly took up his words; and they said, Ben-hadad is your brother. Then he said, Go and get him. So Ben-hadad came out to him and he made him get up into his carriage. | The men took this for a sign: and in haste caught the word out of his mouth, and said: Thy brother Benadad. And he said to them: Go, and bring him to me. Then Benadad came out to him, and he lifted him up into his chariot. |
1st-Kings 20:34 | And he saith unto him, `The cities that my father took from thy father, I give back, and streets thou dost make for thee in Damascus, as my father did in Samaria;` `and I, with a covenant, send thee away;` and he maketh with him a covenant, and sendeth him away. | And Ben-hadad said to him, The towns my father took from your father I will give back; and you may make streets for yourself in Damascus as my father did in Samaria. And as for me, at the price of this agreement you will let me go. So he made an agreement with him and let him go. | And he said to him: The cities which my father took from thy father, I will restore: and do thou make thee streets in Damascus, as my father made in Samaria, and having made a league I will depart from thee. So he made a league with him, and let him go. |
1st-Kings 20:35 | And a certain man of the sons of the prophets said unto his neighbour by the word of Jehovah, `Smite me, I pray thee;` and the man refuseth to smite him, | And a certain man of the sons of the prophets said to his neighbour by the word of the Lord, Give me a wound. But the man would not. | Then a certain man of the sons of the prophets said to his companion in the word of the Lord: Strike me. But he would not strike. |
1st-Kings 20:36 | and he saith to him, `Because that thou hast not hearkened to the voice of Jehovah, lo, thou art going from me, and the lion hath smitten thee;` and he goeth from him, and the lion findeth him, and smiteth him. | Then he said to him, Because you have not given ear to the voice of the Lord, straight away when you have gone from me a lion will put you to death. And when he had gone, straight away a lion came rushing at him and put him to death. | Then he said to him: Because thou wouldst not hearken to the word of the Lord, behold then shalt depart from me, and a lion shall slay thee. And when he was gone a little from him, a lion found him, and slew him. |
1st-Kings 20:37 | And he findeth another man, and saith, `Smite me, I pray thee;` and the man smiteth him, smiting and wounding, | Then he came across another man, and said, Give me a wound. And the man gave him a blow wounding him. | Then he found another man, and said to him: Strike me. And he struck him, and wounded him. |
1st-Kings 20:38 | and the prophet goeth and standeth for the king on the way, and disguiseth himself with ashes on his eyes. | So the prophet went away, and pulling his head-band over his eyes to keep his face covered, took his place by the road waiting for the king. | So the prophet went, and met the king in the way, and disguised himself by sprinkling dust on his face and his eyes. |
1st-Kings 20:39 | And it cometh to pass the king is passing by that he hath cried unto the king, and saith, `Thy servant went out into the midst of the battle, and lo, a man hath turned aside and bringeth in unto me a man, and saith, Keep this man; if he be at all missing, then hath thy life been for his life, or a talent of silver thou dost weigh out; | And when the king went by, crying out to him he said, Your servant went out into the fight; and a man came out to me with another man and said, Keep this man: if by any chance he gets away, your life will be the price of his life, or you will have to give a talent of silver in payment. | And as the king passed by, he cried to the king, and said: Thy servant went out to fight hand to hand: and when a certain man was run away, one brought him to me, and said: Keep this man: and if he shall slip away, thy life shall be for his life, or thou shalt pay a talent of silver. |
1st-Kings 20:40 | and it cometh to pass, thy servant is working hither and thither, and he is not!` and the king of Israel saith unto him, Right [is] thy judgment; thou hast determined [it].` | But while your servant was turning this way and that, he was gone. Then the king of Israel said to him, You are responsible; you have given the decision against yourself. | And whilst I in a hurry turned this way and that, on a sudden he was not to be seen. And the king of Israel said to him: This is thy judgment, which thyself hast decreed. |
1st-Kings 20:41 | And he hasteth and turneth aside the ashes from off his eyes, and the king of Israel discerneth him, that he [is] of the prophets, | Then he quickly took the head-band from his eyes; and the king of Israel saw that he was one of the prophets. | But he forthwith wiped off the dust from his face, and the king of Israel knew him, that he was one of the prophets. |
1st-Kings 20:42 | and he saith unto him, `Thus said Jehovah, Because thou hast sent away the man I devoted, out of [thy] hand, even thy life hath been for his life, and thy people for his people;` | And he said to him, These are the words of the Lord: Because you have let go from your hands the man whom I had put to the curse, your life will be taken for his life, and your people for his people. | And he said to him: Thus saith the Lord: Because thou hast let go out of thy hand a mall worthy of death, thy life shall be for his life, and thy people for his people. |
1st-Kings 20:43 | and the king of Israel goeth unto his house, sulky and wroth, and cometh in to Samaria. | Then the king of Israel went back to his house, bitter and angry, and came to Samaria. | And the king of Israel returned to his house, slighting to hear, and raging came into Samaria. |
