Acts 12:1And about that time, Herod the king put forth his hands, to do evil to certain of those of the assembly,Now, about that time, Herod the king made cruel attacks on the Christians.Now, about that time, King Herod arrested certain members of the Church, in order to ill-treat them;
Acts 12:2and he killed James, the brother of John, with the sword,And he put James, the brother of John, to death with the sword.and James, John's brother, he beheaded.
Acts 12:3and having seen that it is pleasing to the Jews, he added to lay hold of Peter also and they were the days of the unleavened foodAnd when he saw that this was pleasing to the Jews he went on to take Peter in addition. This was at the time of the feast of unleavened bread.Finding that this gratified the Jews, he proceeded to seize Peter also; these being the days of Unleavened Bread.
Acts 12:4whom also having seized, he did put in prison, having delivered [him] to four quaternions of soldiers to guard him, intending after the passover to bring him forth to the people.And having taken him, he put him in prison, with four bands of armed men to keep watch over him; his purpose being to take him out to the people after the Passover.He had him arrested and lodged in jail, handing him over to the care of sixteen soldiers; and intended after the Passover to bring him out again to the people.
Acts 12:5Peter, therefore, indeed, was kept in the prison, and fervent prayer was being made by the assembly unto God for him,So Peter was kept in prison: but the church made strong prayer to God for him.So Peter was kept in prison; but long and fervent prayer was offered to God by the Church on his behalf.
Acts 12:6and when Herod was about to bring him forth, the same night was Peter sleeping between two soldiers, having been bound with two chains, guards also before the door were keeping the prison,And when Herod was about to take him out, the same night Peter was sleeping in chains between two armed men, and the watchmen were keeping watch before the door of the prison.Now when Herod was on the point of taking him out of prison, that very night Peter was asleep between two soldiers, bound with two chains, and guards were on duty outside the door.
Acts 12:7and lo, a messenger of the Lord stood by, and a light shone in the buildings, and having smitten Peter on the side, he raised him up, saying, `Rise in haste,` and his chains fell from off [his] hands.And a great light was seen shining in the room, and an angel of the Lord came to Peter and, touching him on his side so that he came out of his sleep, said, Get up quickly. And his chains came off his hands.Suddenly an angel of the Lord stood by him, and a light shone in the cell; and, striking Peter on the side, he woke him and said, "Rise quickly." Instantly the chains dropped off his wrists.
Acts 12:8The messenger also said to him, `Gird thyself, and bind on thy sandals;` and he did so; and he saith to him, `Put thy garment round and be following me;`Then the angel said, Put on your shoes and get ready to go. And he did so. And he said, Put your coat round you and come with me."Fasten your girdle," said the angel, "and tie on your sandals." He did so. Then the angel said, "Throw your cloak round you, and follow me."
Acts 12:9and having gone forth, he was following him, and he knew not that it is true that which is done through the messenger, and was thinking he saw a vision,And he went out after him; and he was not certain if what was done by the angel was a fact, for it seemed to him that he was seeing a vision.So Peter went out, following him, yet could not believe that what the angel was doing was real, but supposed that he saw a vision.
Acts 12:10and having passed through a first ward, and a second, they came unto the iron gate that is leading to the city, which of its own accord did open to them, and having gone forth, they went on through one street, and immediately the messenger departed from him.And when they had gone past the first and second watchmen they came to the iron door into the town, which came open by itself: and they went out and down one street; and then the angel went away.And passing through the first ward and the second, they came to the iron gate leading into the city. This opened to them of itself; and, going out, they passed on through one of the streets, and then suddenly the angel left him.
Acts 12:11And Peter having come to himself, said, `Now I have known of a truth that the Lord did sent forth His messenger, and did deliver me out of the hand of Herod, and all the expectation of the people of the Jews;`And when Peter came to his senses he said, Now, truly, I am certain that the Lord has sent his angel and taken me out of the hands of Herod, against all the hopes of the Jews.Peter coming to himself said, "Now I know for certain that the Lord has sent His angel and has rescued me from the power of Herod and from all that the Jewish people were anticipating."
Acts 12:12also, having considered, he came unto the house of Mary, the mother of John, who is surnamed Mark, where there were many thronged together and praying.And when he became clear about this, he went to the house of Mary, the mother of John named Mark, where a number of them had come together for prayer.So, after thinking things over, he went to the house of Mary, the mother of John surnamed Mark, where a large number of people were assembled, praying.
Acts 12:13And Peter having knocked at the door of the porch, there came a damsel to hearken, by name Rhoda,And he gave a blow on the door, and a young girl came to it, named Rhoda.When he knocked at the wicket in the door, a maidservant named Rhoda came to answer the knock;
Acts 12:14and having known the voice of Peter, from the joy she did not open the porch, but having run in, told of the standing of Peter before the porch,And hearing the voice of Peter, in her joy she went running, without opening the door, to say that Peter was outside.and recognizing Peter's voice, for very joy she did not open the door, but ran in and told them that Peter was standing there.
Acts 12:15and they said unto her, `Thou art mad;` and she was confidently affirming [it] to be so, and they said, `It is his messenger;`And they said to her, You are off your head. But still she said, with decision, that it was so. And they said, It is his angel."You are mad," they said. But she strenuously maintained that it was true. "It is his guardian angel," they said.
Acts 12:16and Peter was continuing knocking, and having opened, they saw him, and were astonished,But Peter went on giving blows on the door: and when it was open and they saw him, they were full of wonder.Meanwhile Peter went on knocking, until at last they opened the door and saw that it was really he, and were filled with amazement.
Acts 12:17and having beckoned to them with the hand to be silent, he declared to them how the Lord brought him out of the prison, and he said, `Declare to James and to the brethren these things;` and having gone forth, he went on to another place.But he made a sign to them with his hand to be quiet, and gave them an account of how the Lord had taken him out of prison. And he said, Give the news to James and the brothers. And then he went away.But he motioned with his hand for silence, and then described to them how the Lord had brought him out of the prison. "Tell all this to James and the brethren," he added. Then he left them, and went to another place.
Acts 12:18And day having come, there was not a little stir among the soldiers what then was become of Peter,Now when it was day, the armed men were greatly troubled about what had become of Peter.When morning came, there was no little commotion among the soldiers, as to what could possibly have become of Peter.
Acts 12:19and Herod having sought for him, and not having found, having examined the guards, did command [them] to be led away to punishment, and having gone down from Judea to Cesarea, he was abiding [there].And Herod, when he sent for him, and he was not there, after questioning the watchmen, gave orders that they were to be put to death. Then he went down from Judaea to Caesarea for a time.And when Herod had had him searched for and could not find him, after sharply questioning the guards he ordered them away to execution. He then went down from Judaea to Caesarea and remained there.
Acts 12:20And Herod was highly displeased with the Tyrians and Sidonians, and with one accord they came unto him, and having made a friend of Blastus, who [is] over the bed-chambers of the king, they were asking peace, because of their country being nourished from the king`s;Now he was very angry with the people of Tyre and Sidon: and they came to him, all together, and having made friends with Blastus, the controller of the king's house, they made a request for peace, because their country was dependent on the king's country for its food.Now the people of Tyre and Sidon had incurred Herod's violent displeasure. So they sent a large deputation to wait on him; and having secured the good will of Blastus, his treasurer, they begged the king to be friendly with them again, because their country was dependent on his for its food supply.
Acts 12:21and on a set day, Herod having arrayed himself in kingly apparel, and having sat down upon the tribunal, was making an oration unto them,And on the day which had been fixed, Herod, dressed in his robes and seated in his place, made a public statement to them.So, on an appointed day, Herod, having arrayed himself in royal robes, took his seat on the tribunal, and was haranguing them;
Acts 12:22and the populace were shouting, `The voice of a god, and not of a man;`And the people, with loud cries, said, It is the voice of a god, not of a man.and the assembled people kept shouting, "It is the voice of a god, and not of a man!"
Acts 12:23and presently there smote him a messenger of the Lord, because he did not give the glory to God, and having been eaten of worms, he expired.And straight away the angel of the Lord sent a disease on him, because he did not give the glory to God: and his flesh was wasted away by worms, and so he came to his end.Instantly an angel of the Lord struck him, because he had not given the glory to God, and being eaten up by worms, he died.
Acts 12:24And the word of God did grow and did multiply,But the word of the Lord went on increasing.But God's Message prospered, and converts were multiplied.
Acts 12:25and Barnabas and Saul did turn back out of Jerusalem, having fulfilled the ministration, having taken also with [them] John, who was surnamed Mark.And Barnabas and Saul came back from Jerusalem, when their work was ended, taking with them John named Mark.And Barnabas and Saul returned from Jerusalem, having discharged their mission, and they brought with them John, surnamed Mark.
