Acts 28:1And having been saved, then they knew that the island is called Melita,And when we were safe, we made the discovery that the island was named Melita. Our lives having been thus preserved, we discovered that the island was called Malta.
Acts 28:2and the foreigners were shewing us no ordinary kindness, for having kindled a fire, they received us all, because of the pressing rain, and because of the cold; And the simple people living there were uncommonly kind to us, for they made a fire for us, and took us in, because it was raining and cold. The strange-speaking natives showed us remarkable kindness, for they lighted a fire and made us all welcome because of the pelting rain and the cold.
Acts 28:3but Paul having gathered together a quantity of sticks, and having laid [them] upon the fire, a viper out of the heat having come did fasten on his hand. But when Paul had got some sticks together and put them on the fire, a snake came out, because of the heat, and gave him a bite on the hand. Now, when Paul had gathered a bundle of sticks and had thrown them on the fire, a viper, driven by the heat, came out and fastened itself on his hand.
Acts 28:4And when the foreigners saw the beast hanging from his hand, they said unto one another, `Certainly this man is a murderer, whom, having been saved out of the sea, the justice did not suffer to live;`And when the people saw it hanging on his hand, they said to one another, Without doubt this man has put someone to death, and though he has got safely away from the sea, God will not let him go on living. When the natives saw the creature hanging to his hand, they said to one another, "Beyond doubt this man is a murderer, for, though saved from the sea, unerring Justice does not permit him to live."
Acts 28:5he then, indeed, having shaken off the beast into the fire, suffered no evil,But shaking off the beast into the fire, he got no damage. He, however, shook the reptile off into the fire and was unhurt.
Acts 28:6and they were expecting him to be about to be inflamed, or to fall down suddenly dead, and they, expecting [it] a long time, and seeing nothing uncommon happening to him, changing [their] minds, said he was a god.But they had the idea that they would see him becoming ill, or suddenly falling down dead; but after waiting a long time, and seeing that no damage came to him, changing their opinion, they said he was a god. They expected him soon to swell with inflammation or suddenly fall down dead; but, after waiting a long time and seeing no harm come to him, they changed their minds and said that he was a god.
Acts 28:7And in the neighbourhood of that place were lands of the principal man of the island, by name Publius, who, having received us, three days did courteously lodge [us];Now near that place there was some land, the property of the chief man of the island, who was named Publius; who very kindly took us into his house as his guests for three days. Now in the same part of the island there were estates belonging to the Governor, whose name was Publius. He welcomed us to his house, and for three days generously made us his guests.
Acts 28:8and it came to pass, the father of Publius with feverish heats and dysentery pressed, was laid, unto whom Paul having entered, and having prayed, having laid [his] hands on him, healed him;And the father of Publius was ill, with a disease of the stomach; to whom Paul went, and put his hands on him, with prayer, and made him well.It happened, however, that his father was lying ill of dysentery aggravated by attacks of fever; so Paul went to see him, and, after praying, laid his hands on him and cured him.
Acts 28:9this, therefore, being done, the others also in the island having infirmities were coming and were healed; And when this took place, all the others in the island who had diseases came and were made well. After this, all the other sick people in the island came and were cured.
Acts 28:10who also with many honours did honour us, and we setting sail they were lading [us] with the things that were necessary. Then they gave us great honour, and, when we went away, they put into the ship whatever things we were in need of.They also loaded us with honours, and when at last we sailed they put supplies on board for us.
Acts 28:11And after three months, we set sail in a ship (that had wintered in the isle) of Alexandria, with the sign Dioscuri,And after three months we went to sea in a ship of Alexandria sailing under the sign of the Dioscuri, which had been at the island for the winter.Three months passed before we set sail in an Alexandrian vessel, called the `Twin Brothers,' which had wintered at the island.
Acts 28:12and having landed at Syracuse, we remained three days,And going into the harbour at Syracuse, we were waiting there for three days.At Syracuse we put in and stayed for two days.
Acts 28:13thence having gone round, we came to Rhegium, and after one day, a south wind having sprung up, the second [day] we came to Puteoli; And from there, going about in a curve, we came to Rhegium: and after one day a south wind came up and on the day after we came to Puteoli:From there we came round and reached Rhegium; and a day later, a south wind sprang up which brought us by the evening of the next day to Puteoli.
Acts 28:14where, having found brethren, we were called upon to remain with them seven days, and thus to Rome we came;Where we came across some of the brothers, who kept us with them for seven days; and so we came to Rome. Here we found brethren, who invited us to remain with them for a week; and so we reached Rome.
Acts 28:15and thence, the brethren having heard the things concerning us, came forth to meet us, unto Appii Forum, and Three Taverns whom Paul having seen, having given thanks to God, took courage. And the brothers, when they had news of us, came out from town as far as Appii Forum and the Three Taverns to have a meeting with us: and Paul, seeing them, gave praise to God and took heart.Meanwhile the brethren there, hearing of our movements, came as far as the Market of Appius and the Three Huts to meet us; and when Paul saw them he thanked God and felt encouraged.
Acts 28:16And when we came to Rome, the centurion delivered up the prisoners to the captain of the barrack, but Paul was suffered to remain by himself, with the soldier guarding him.And when we came into Rome, they let Paul have a house for himself and the armed man who kept watch over him.Upon our arrival in Rome, Paul received permission to live by himself, guarded by a soldier.
Acts 28:17And it came to pass after three days, Paul called together those who are the principal men of the Jews, and they having come together, he said unto them: `Men, brethren, I having done nothing contrary to the people, or to the customs of the fathers a prisoner from Jerusalem, was delivered up to the hands of the Romans; Then after three days he sent for the chief men of the Jews: and when they had come together, he said to them, My brothers, though I had done nothing against the people or the ways of our fathers, I was given, a prisoner from Jerusalem, into the hands of the Romans. After one complete day he invited the leading men among the Jews to meet him; and, when they were come together, he said to them, "As for me, brethren, although I had done nothing prejudicial to our people or contrary to the customs of our forefathers, I was handed over as a prisoner from Jerusalem into the power of the Romans.
Acts 28:18who, having examined me, were wishing to release [me], because of their being no cause of death in me,Who, when they had put questions to me, were ready to let me go free, because there was no cause of death in me.They, after they had sharply questioned me, were willing to set me at liberty, because they found no offence in me for which I deserve to die.
Acts 28:19and the Jews having spoken against [it], I was constrained to appeal unto Caesar not as having anything to accuse my nation of;But when the Jews made protest against it, I had to put my cause into Caesar's hands; not because I have anything to say against my nation. But, at last, the opposition of the Jews compelled me to appeal to Caesar; not however that I had any charge to bring against my nation.
Acts 28:20for this cause, therefore, I called for you to see and to speak with [you], for because of the hope of Israel with this chain I am bound.`But for this reason I sent for you, to see and have talk with you: for because of the hope of Israel I am in these chains. For these reasons, then, I have invited you here, that I might see you and speak to you; for it is for the sake of Him who is the hope of Israel that this chain hangs upon me."
Acts 28:21And they said unto him, `We did neither receive letters concerning thee from Judea, nor did any one who came of the brethren declare or speak any evil concerning thee,And they said to him, We have not had letters from Judaea about you, and no one of the brothers has come to us here to give an account or say any evil about you."For our part," they replied, "we have not received any letters from Judaea about you, nor have any of our countrymen come here and reported or stated anything to your disadvantage.
Acts 28:22and we think it good from thee to hear what thou dost think, for, indeed, concerning this sect it is known to us that everywhere it is spoken against;`But we have a desire to give hearing to your opinion: for as to this form of religion, we have knowledge that in all places it is attacked. But we should be glad to hear from you what it is that you believe; for as for this sect all we know is that it is everywhere spoken against."
Acts 28:23and having appointed him a day, they came, more of them unto him, to the lodging, to whom he was expounding, testifying fully the reign of God, persuading them also of the things concerning Jesus, both from the law of Moses, and the prophets, from morning till evening,And when a day had been fixed, they came to his house in great numbers; and he gave them teaching, giving witness to the kingdom of God, and having discussions with them about Jesus, from the law of Moses and from the prophets, from morning till evening. So they arranged a day with him and came to him in considerable numbers at the house of the friends who were entertaining him. And then, with solemn earnestness, he explained to them the subject of the Kingdom of God, endeavouring from morning till evening to convince them about Jesus, both from the Law of Moses and from the Prophets.
Acts 28:24and, some, indeed, were believing the things spoken, and some were not believing. And some were in agreement with what he said, but some had doubts. Some were convinced; others refused to believe.
Acts 28:25And not being agreed with one another, they were going away, Paul having spoken one word `Well did the Holy Spirit speak through Isaiah the prophet unto our fathers,And they went away, for there was a division among them after Paul had said this one thing: Well did the Holy Spirit say by the prophet Isaiah to your fathers,Unable to agree among themselves, they at last left him, but not before Paul had spoken a parting word to them, saying, "Right well did the Holy Spirit say to your forefathers through the Prophet Isaiah:
Acts 28:26saying, Go on unto this people and say, With hearing ye shall hear, and ye shall not understand, and seeing ye shall see, and ye shall not perceive,Go to this people and say, Though you give ear, you will not get knowledge; and seeing, you will see, but the sense will not be clear to you:"`Go to this people and tell them, you will hear and hear, and by no means understand; and will look and look, and by no means see.
Acts 28:27for made gross was the heart of this people, and with the ears they heard heavily, and their eyes they did close, lest they may see with the eyes, and with the heart may understand, and be turned back, and I may heal them. For the heart of this people has become fat and their ears are slow in hearing and their eyes are shut; for fear that they might see with their eyes and give hearing with their ears and become wise in their hearts and be turned again to me, so that I might make them well. For this people's mind has grown callous, their hearing has become dull, and their eyes they have closed; to prevent their ever seeing with their eyes, or hearing with their ears, or understanding with their minds, and turning back, so that I might cure them.'
Acts 28:28`Be it known, therefore, to you, that to the nations was sent the salvation of God, these also will hear it;`Be certain, then, that the salvation of God is sent to the Gentiles, and they will give hearing."Be fully assured, therefore, that this salvation God's salvation has now been sent to the Gentiles, and that they, at any rate, will give heed."
Acts 28:29and he having said these things, the Jews went away, having much disputation among themselves;[][]
Acts 28:30and Paul remained an entire two years in his own hired [house], and was receiving all those coming in unto him,And for the space of two years, Paul was living in the house of which he had the use, and had talk with all those who went in to see him,After this Paul lived for fully two years in a hired house of his own, receiving all who came to see him.
Acts 28:31preaching the reign of God, and teaching the things concerning the Lord Jesus Christ with all boldness unforbidden.Preaching the kingdom of God and teaching about the Lord Jesus Christ without fear, and no orders were given that he was not to do so.He announced the coming of the Kingdom of God, and taught concerning the Lord Jesus Christ without let or hindrance.
