Luke 4:1 | And Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, turned back from the Jordan, and was brought in the Spirit to the wilderness, | And Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, came back from the Jordan, and was guided by the Spirit in the waste land | Then Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan, and was led about by the Spirit in the Desert for forty days, |
Luke 4:2 | forty days being tempted by the Devil, and he did not eat anything in those days, and they having been ended, he afterward hungered, | For forty days, being tested by the Evil One. And he had no food in those days; and when they came to an end, he was in need of food. | tempted all the while by the Devil. During those days He ate nothing, and at the close of them He suffered from hunger. |
Luke 4:3 | and the Devil said to him, `If Son thou art of God, speak to this stone that it may become bread.` | And the Evil One said to him, If you are the Son of God, give orders to this stone to become bread. | Then the Devil said to Him, "If you are God's Son, tell this stone to become bread." |
Luke 4:4 | And Jesus answered him, saying, `It hath been written, that, not on bread only shall man live, but on every saying of God.` | And Jesus made answer to him, It has been said in the Writings, Bread is not man's only need. | "It is written," replied Jesus, "`It is not on bread alone that a man shall live.'" |
Luke 4:5 | And the Devil having brought him up to an high mountain, shewed to him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time, | And he took him up and let him see all the kingdoms of the earth in a minute of time. | The Devil next led Him up and caused Him to see at a glance all the kingdoms of the world. |
Luke 4:6 | and the Devil said to him, `To thee I will give all this authority, and their glory, because to me it hath been delivered, and to whomsoever I will, I do give it; | And the Evil One said, I will give you authority over all these, and the glory of them, for it has been given to me, and I give it to anyone at my pleasure. | And the Devil said to Him, "To you will I give all this authority and this splendour; for it has been handed over to me, and on whomsoever I will I bestow it. |
Luke 4:7 | thou, then, if thou mayest bow before me all shall be thine.` | If then you will give worship to me, it will all be yours. | If therefore you do homage to me, it shall all be yours.' |
Luke 4:8 | And Jesus answering him said, `Get thee behind me, Adversary, for it hath been written, Thou shalt bow before the Lord thy God, and Him only thou shalt serve.` | And Jesus in answer said to him, It has been said in the Writings, Give worship to the Lord your God, and be his servant only. | Jesus answered him, "It is written, `To the Lord thy God thou shalt do homage, and to Him alone shalt thou render worship.'" |
Luke 4:9 | And he brought him to Jerusalem, and set him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to him, `If the Son thou art of God, cast thyself down hence, | And he took him to Jerusalem and put him on the highest point of the Temple and said to him, If you are the Son of God, let yourself go down from here; for it is said in the Writings, | Then he brought Him to Jerusalem and caused Him to stand on the roof of the Temple, and said to Him, "If you are God's Son, throw yourself down from here; for it is written, |
Luke 4:10 | for it hath been written To His messengers He will give charge concerning thee, to guard over thee, | He will give his angels orders to take care of you: | `He will give orders to His angels concerning thee, to guard thee safely;' |
Luke 4:11 | and On hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou mayest dash against a stone thy foot.` | And, In their hands they will keep you up, so that your foot may not be crushed against a stone. | and `On their hands they shall bear thee up, Lest at any moment thou shouldst strike thy foot against a stone.'" |
Luke 4:12 | And Jesus answering said to him `It hath been said, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.` | And Jesus made answer and said to him, It is said in the Writings, You may not put the Lord your God to the test. | The reply of Jesus was, "It is said, `Thou shalt not put the Lord they God to the proof.'" |
Luke 4:13 | And having ended all temptation, the Devil departed from him till a convenient season. | And when all these tests were ended the Evil One went away from him for a time. | So the Devil, having fully tried every kind of temptation on Him, left Him for a time. |
Luke 4:14 | And Jesus turned back in the power of the Spirit to Galilee, and a fame went forth through all the region round about concerning him, | And Jesus came back to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and the news of him went through all the country round about. | Then Jesus returned in the Spirit's power to Galilee; and His fame spread through all the adjacent districts. |
Luke 4:15 | and he was teaching in their synagogues, being glorified by all. | And he was teaching in their Synagogues and all men gave him praise. | And He proceeded to teach in their synagogues, winning praise from all. |
Luke 4:16 | And he came to Nazareth, where he hath been brought up, and he went in, according to his custom, on the sabbath-day, to the synagogue, and stood up to read; | And he came to Nazareth, where he had been as a child, and he went, as his way was, into the Synagogue on the Sabbath, and got up to give a reading. | He came to Nazareth also, where He had been brought up; and, as was His custom, He went to the synagogue on the Sabbath, and stood up to read. |

Luke 4:18 | `The Spirit of the Lord [is] upon me, Because He did anoint me; To proclaim good news to the poor, Sent me to heal the broken of heart, To proclaim to captives deliverance, And to blind receiving of sight, To send away the bruised with deliverance, | The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because I am marked out by him to give good news to the poor; he has sent me to make well those who are broken-hearted; to say that the prisoners will be let go, and the blind will see, and to make the wounded free from their chains, | "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because He has anointed me to proclaim Good News to the poor; He has sent me to announce release to the prisoners of war and recovery of sight to the blind: to send away free those whom tyranny has crushed, |
Luke 4:19 | To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.` | To give knowledge that the year of the Lord's good pleasure is come. | to proclaim the year of acceptance with the Lord." |
Luke 4:20 | And having folded the roll, having given [it] back to the officer, he sat down, and the eyes of all in the synagogue were gazing on him. | And shutting the book he gave it back to the servant and took his seat: and the eyes of all in the Synagogue were fixed on him. | And rolling up the book, He returned it to the attendant, and sat down to speak. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on Him. |
Luke 4:21 | And he began to say unto them `To-day hath this writing been fulfilled in your ears;` | Then he said to them, Today this word has come true in your hearing. | Then He proceeded to say to them, "To-day is this Scripture fulfilled in your hearing." |
Luke 4:22 | and all were bearing testimony to him, and were wondering at the gracious words that are coming forth out of his mouth, and they said, `Is not this the son of Joseph?` | And they were all giving witness, with wonder, to the words of grace which came from his mouth: and they said, Is not this the son of Joseph? | And they all spoke well of Him, wondering at the sweet words of kindness which fell from His lips, while they asked one another, "Is not this Joseph's son?" |
Luke 4:23 | And he said unto them, `Certainly ye will say to me this simile, Physician, heal thyself; as great things as we heard done in Capernaum, do also here in thy country;` | And he said to them, Without doubt you will say to me, Let the medical man make himself well: the things which to our knowledge were done at Capernaum, do them here in your country. | "Doubtless," said He, "you will quote to me the proverb, `Physician, cure yourself: all that we hear that you have done at Capernaum, do here also in your native place.'" |
Luke 4:24 | and he said, `Verily I say to you No prophet is accepted in his own country; | And he said to them, Truly I say to you, No prophet is honoured in his country. | "I tell you in solemn truth," He added, "that no Prophet is welcomed among his own people. |
Luke 4:25 | and of a truth I say to you, Many widows were in the days of Elijah, in Israel, when the heaven was shut for three years and six months, when great famine came on all the land, | Truly I say to you, There were a number of widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the heaven was shut up for three years and six months and there was no food in the land; | But I tell you in truth that there was many a widow in Israel in the time of Elijah, when there was no rain for three years and six months and there came a severe famine over all the land; |
Luke 4:26 | and unto none of them was Elijah sent, but to Sarepta of Sidon, unto a woman, a widow; | But Elijah was not sent to one of them, but only to Zarephath, in the land of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow. | and yet to not one of them was Elijah sent: he was only sent to a widow at Zarephath in the Sidonian country. |
Luke 4:27 | and many lepers were in the time of Elisha the prophet, in Israel, and none of them was cleansed, but Naaman the Syrian.` | And there were a number of lepers in Israel in the time of Elisha the prophet, and not one of them was made clean, but only Naaman the Syrian. | And there was also many a leper in Israel in the time of the Prophet Elisha, and yet not one of them was cleansed, but Naaman the Syrian was." |
Luke 4:28 | And all in the synagogue were filled with wrath, hearing these things, | And all who were in the Synagogue were very angry when these things were said to them. | Then all in the synagogue, while listening to these words, were filled with fury. |

In a loud voice he cried out, |
Luke 4:34 | saying, `Away, what to us and to thee, Jesus, O Nazarene? thou didst come to destroy us; I have known thee who thou art the Holy One of God.` | Let us be! what have we to do with you, Jesus of Nazareth? have you come to put an end to us? I have knowledge who you are, the Holy One of God. | "Ha! Jesus the Nazarene, what have you to do with us? I know who you are God's Holy One!" |
Luke 4:35 | And Jesus did rebuke him, saying, `Be silenced, and come forth out of him;` and the demon having cast him into the midst, came forth from him, having hurt him nought; | And Jesus said to him, Be quiet, and come out of him. And when the evil spirit had put him down on the earth in the middle of them, he came out of him, having done him no damage. | But Jesus rebuked the demon. "Silence!" He exclaimed; "come out of him." Upon this, the demon hurled the man into the midst of them, and came out of him without doing him any harm. |
Luke 4:36 | and amazement came upon all, and they were speaking together, with one another, saying, `What [is] this word, that with authority and power he doth command the unclean spirits, and they come forth?` | And wonder came on them all and they said to one another, What are these words? for with authority and power he gives orders to the evil spirits and they come out. | All were astonished and awe-struck; and they asked one another, "What sort of language is this? For with authority and real power He gives orders to the foul spirits and they come out." |
Luke 4:37 | and there was going forth a fame concerning him to every place of the region round about. | And there was much talk about him in all the places round about. | And the talk about Him spread into every part of the neighbouring country. |
Luke 4:38 | And having risen out of the synagogue, he entered into the house of Simon, and the mother-in-law of Simon was pressed with a great fever, and they did ask him about her, | And he got up and went out of the Synagogue and went into the house of Simon. And Simon's wife's mother was very ill with a burning heat; and in answer to their prayers for her | Now when He rose and left the synagogue He went to Simon's house. Simon's mother-in-law was suffering from an acute attack of fever; and they consulted Him about her. |
Luke 4:39 | and having stood over her, he rebuked the fever, and it left her, and presently, having risen, she was ministering to them. | He went near her, and with a sharp word he gave orders to the disease and it went away from her; and straight away she got up and took care of their needs. | Then standing over her He rebuked the fever, and it left her; and she at once rose and waited on them. |
Luke 4:40 | And at the setting of the sun, all, as many as had any ailing with manifold sicknesses, brought them unto him, and he on each one of them [his] hands having put, did heal them. | And at sundown all those who had anyone ill with any sort of disease, took them to him, and he put his hands on every one of them and made them well. | At sunset all who had friends suffering from any illness brought them to Him, and He laid His hands on them all, one by one, and cured them. |
Luke 4:41 | And demons also were coming forth from many, crying out and saying `Thou art the Christ, the Son of God;` and rebuking, he did not suffer them to speak, because they knew him to be the Christ. | And evil spirits came out of a number of them, crying out and saying, You are the Son of God. But he gave them sharp orders not to say a word, because they had knowledge that he was the Christ. | Demons also came out of many, loudly calling out, "You are the Son of God." But He rebuked them and forbad them to speak, because they knew Him to be the Christ. |
Luke 4:42 | And day having come, having gone forth, he went on to a desert place, and the multitudes were seeking him, and they came unto him, and were staying him not to go on from them, | And when it was day, he came out and went to a waste place; and great numbers of people came looking for him, and they came to him and would have kept him from going away. | Next morning, at daybreak, He left the town and went away to a solitary place; but the people flocked out to find Him, and, coming to the place where He was, they endeavoured to detain Him that He might not leave them. |
Luke 4:43 | and he said unto them `Also to the other cities it behoveth me to proclaim good news of the reign of God, because for this I have been sent;` | But he said to them, I have to give the good news of the kingdom of God in other towns, because that is why I was sent. | But He said to them, "I have to tell the Good News of the Kingdom of God to the other towns also, because for this purpose I was sent." |
Luke 4:44 | and he was preaching in the synagogues of Galilee. | And he was teaching in the Synagogues of Galilee. | And for some time He preached in the synagogues in Galilee. |
