Mark 5:1 | And they came to the other side of the sea, to the region of the Gadarenes, | And they came to the other side of the sea, into the country of the Gerasenes. | So they arrived at the opposite shore of the Lake, in the country of the Gerasenes. |
Mark 5:2 | and he having come forth out of the boat, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit, | And when he had got out of the boat, straight away there came to him from the place of the dead a man with an unclean spirit. | At once, on His landing, there came from the tombs to meet Him a man possessed by a foul spirit. |
Mark 5:3 | who had his dwelling in the tombs, and not even with chains was any one able to bind him, | He was living in the place of the dead: and no man was able to keep him down, no, not with a chain; | This man lived among the tombs, nor could any one now secure him even with a chain; |
Mark 5:4 | because that he many times with fetters and chains had been bound, and pulled in pieces by him had been the chains, and the fetters broken in pieces, and none was able to tame him, | Because he had frequently been prisoned in chains and iron bands, and the chains had been parted and the bands broken by him: and no man was strong enough to make him quiet. | for many a time he had been left securely bound in fetters and chains, but afterwards the chains lay torn link from link, and the fetters in fragments, and there was no one strong enough to master him. |
Mark 5:5 | and always, night and day, in the mountains, and in the tombs he was, crying and cutting himself with stones. | And all the time, by day and by night, in the place of the dead, and in the mountains, he was crying out and cutting himself with stones. | And constantly, day and night, he remained among the tombs or on the hills, shrieking, and mangling himself with sharp stones. |
Mark 5:6 | And, having seen Jesus from afar, he ran and bowed before him, | And when he saw Jesus from far off, he went quickly to him and gave him worship; | And when he saw Jesus in the distance, he ran and threw himself at His feet, |
Mark 5:7 | and having called with a loud voice, he said, `What to me and to thee, Jesus, Son of God the Most High? I adjure thee by God, mayest thou not afflict me!` | And crying out with a loud voice he said, What have I to do with you, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? In God's name, do not be cruel to me. | crying out in a loud voice, "What hast Thou to do with me, Jesus, Son of God Most High? In God's name I implore Thee not to torment me." |
Mark 5:8 | (for he said to him, `Come forth, spirit unclean, out of the man,`) | For Jesus had said to him, Come out of the man, you unclean spirit. | For He had said to him, "Foul spirit, come out of the man." |
Mark 5:9 | and he was questioning him, `What [is] thy name?` and he answered, saying, `Legion [is] my name, because we are many;` | And Jesus said, What is your name? And he made answer, My name is Legion, because there are a great number of us. | Jesus also questioned him. "What is your name?" He said. "Legion," he replied, "for there are a host of us." |
Mark 5:10 | and he was calling on him much, that he may not send them out of the region. | And he made strong prayers to him not to send them away out of the country. | And he earnestly entreated Him not to send them away out of the country. |
Mark 5:11 | And there was there, near the mountains, a great herd of swine feeding, | Now on the mountain side there was a great herd of pigs getting their food. | Feeding there, on the mountain slope, was a great herd of swine. |
Mark 5:12 | and all the demons did call upon him, saying, `Send us to the swine, that into them we may enter;` | And they said to him, Send us into the pigs, so that we may go into them. | So they besought Jesus. "Send us to the swine," they said, "so that we may enter into them." |
Mark 5:13 | and immediately Jesus gave them leave, and having come forth, the unclean spirits did enter into the swine, and the herd did rush down the steep place to the sea and they were about two thousand and they were choked in the sea. | And he let them do it. And the unclean spirits came out and went into the pigs; and the herd went rushing down a sharp slope into the sea, about two thousand of them; and they came to their death in the sea. | He gave them leave; and the foul spirits came out and entered into the swine, and the herd about 2,000 in number rushed headlong down the cliff into the Lake and were drowned in the Lake. |
Mark 5:14 | And those feeding the swine did flee, and told in the city, and in the fields, and they came forth to see what it is that hath been done; | And their keepers went running and gave an account of it in the town and in the country. And people came to see what had taken place. | The swineherds fled, and spread the news in town and country. So the people came to see what it was that had happened; |
Mark 5:15 | and they come unto Jesus, and see the demoniac, sitting, and clothed, and right-minded him having had the legion and they were afraid; | And they came to Jesus, and saw the man in whom had been the evil spirits seated, clothed and with full use of his senses, and they were full of fear. | and when they came to Jesus, they beheld the demoniac quietly seated, clothed and of sane mind the man who had had the legion; and they were awe-stricken. |
Mark 5:16 | and those having seen [it], declared to them how it had come to pass to the demoniac, and about the swine; | And those who had seen it gave them an account of what had been done to him who had the evil spirits, and of the fate of the pigs. | And those who had seen it told them the particulars of what had happened to the demoniac, and all about the swine. |
Mark 5:17 | and they began to call upon him to go away from their borders. | And they made a request to him to go out of their country. | Then they began entreating Him to depart from their district. |
Mark 5:18 | And he having gone into the boat, the demoniac was calling on him that he may be with him, | And when he was getting into the boat, the man in whom had been the evil spirits had a great desire to come with him. | As He was embarking, the man who had been possessed asked permission to accompany Him. |
Mark 5:19 | and Jesus did not suffer him, but saith to him, `Go away to thy house, unto thine own [friends], and tell them how great things the Lord did to thee, and dealt kindly with thee; | And he would not let him, but said to him, Go to your house, to your friends, and give them news of the great things the Lord has done for you, and how he had mercy on you. | But He would not allow it. "Go home to your family," He said, "and report to them all that the Lord has done for you, and the mercy He has shown you." |
Mark 5:20 | and he went away, and began to proclaim in the Decapolis how great things Jesus did to him, and all were wondering. | And he went on his way, and made public in the country of Decapolis what great things Jesus had done for him: and all men were full of wonder. | So the man departed, and related publicly everywhere in the Ten Towns all that Jesus had done for him; and all were astonished. |

Mark 5:22 | and lo, there doth come one of the chiefs of the synagogue, by name Jairus, and having seen him, he doth fall at his feet, | And one of the rulers of the Synagogue, Jairus by name, came, and seeing him, went down at his feet, | when there came one of the Wardens of the Synagogue he was called Jair who, on beholding Him, threw himself at His feet, |
Mark 5:23 | and he was calling upon him much, saying `My little daughter is at the last extremity that having come, thou mayest lay on her [thy] hands, so that she may be saved, and she shall live;` | And made strong prayers to him, saying, My little daughter is near to death: it is my prayer that you will come and put your hands on her, so that she may be made well, and have life. | and besought Him with many entreaties. "My little daughter," he said, "is at the point of death: I pray you come and lay your hands upon her, that she may recover and live." |
Mark 5:24 | and he went away with him. And there was following him a great multitude, and they were thronging him, | And he went with him; and a great number of people went after him, and came round him. | And Jesus went with him. And a dense crowd followed Him, and thronged Him on all sides. |
Mark 5:25 | and a certain woman, having an issue of blood twelve years, | And a woman, who had had a flow of blood for twelve years, | Now a woman who for twelve years had suffered from haemorrhage, |
Mark 5:26 | and many things having suffered under many physicians, and having spent all that she had, and having profited nothing, but rather having come to the worse, | And had undergone much at the hands of a number of medical men, and had given all she had, and was no better, but even worse, | and had undergone many different treatments under a number of doctors and had spent all she had without receiving benefit but on the contrary growing worse, |
Mark 5:27 | having heard about Jesus, having come in the multitude behind, she touched his garment, | When she had news of the things which Jesus did, went among the people coming after him, and put her hand on his robe. | heard of Jesus. And she came in the crowd behind Him and touched His cloak; |
Mark 5:28 | for she said `If even his garments I may touch, I shall be saved;` | For she said, If I may only put my hand on his robe, I will be made well. | for she said, "If I but touch His clothes, I shall be cured." |
Mark 5:29 | and immediately was the fountain of her blood dried up, and she knew in the body that she hath been healed of the plague. | And straight away the fountain of her blood was stopped, and she had a feeling in her body that her disease had gone and she was well. | In a moment the flow of her blood ceased, and she felt in herself that her complaint was cured. |
Mark 5:30 | And immediately Jesus having known in himself that out of him power had gone forth, having turned about in the multitude, said, `Who did touch my garments?` | And straight away Jesus was conscious that power had gone out of him; and, turning to the people, he said, Who was touching my robe? | Immediately Jesus, well knowing that healing power had gone from within Him, turned round in the crowd and asked, "Who touched my clothes?" |
Mark 5:31 | and his disciples said to him, `Thou seest the multitude thronging thee, and thou sayest, `Who did touch me!` | And his disciples said to him, You see the people round you on every side, and you say, Who was touching me? | "You see the multitude pressing you on all sides," His disciples exclaimed, "and yet you ask, `Who touched me?'" |
Mark 5:32 | And he was looking round to see her who did this, | And on his looking round to see her who had done this thing, | But He continued looking about to see the person who had done this, |
Mark 5:33 | and the woman, having been afraid, and trembling, knowing what was done on her, came, and fell down before him, and told him all the truth, | The woman, shaking with fear, conscious of what had been done to her, came and, falling on her face before him, gave him a true account of everything. | until the woman, frightened and trembling, knowing what had happened to her, came and threw herself at His feet, and told Him all the truth. |
Mark 5:34 | and he said to her, `Daughter, thy faith hath saved thee; go away in peace, and be whole from thy plague.` | And he said to her, Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace, and be free from your disease. | "Daughter," He said, "your faith has cured you: go in peace, and be free from your complaint." |
Mark 5:35 | As he is yet speaking, there come from the chief of the synagogue`s [house, certain], saying `Thy daughter did die, why still dost thou harass the Teacher?` | And while he was still talking, they came from the ruler of the Synagogue's house, saying, Your daughter is dead: why are you still troubling the Master? | While He is yet speaking, men come from the house to the Warden, and say, "Your daughter is dead: why trouble the Rabbi further?" |
Mark 5:36 | And Jesus immediately, having heard the word that is spoken, saith to the chief of the synagogue, `Be not afraid, only believe.` | But Jesus, giving no attention to their words, said to the ruler of the Synagogue, Have no fear, only have faith. | But Jesus, overhearing the words, said to the Warden, "Do not be afraid; only have faith." |
Mark 5:37 | And he did not suffer any one to follow with him, except Peter, and James, and John the brother of James; | And he did not let anyone come with him, but Peter and James and John, the brother of James. | And He allowed no one to accompany Him except Peter and the brothers James and John. |
Mark 5:38 | and he cometh to the house of the chief of the synagogue, and seeth a tumult, much weeping and wailing; | And they came to the house of the ruler of the Synagogue; and he saw people running this way and that, and weeping and crying loudly. | So they come to the Warden's house. Here He gazes on a scene of uproar, with people weeping aloud and wailing. |
Mark 5:39 | and having gone in he saith to them, `Why do ye make a tumult, and weep? the child did not die, but doth sleep; | And when he had gone in, he said to them, Why are you making such a noise and weeping? The child is not dead, but sleeping. | He goes in. "Why all this outcry and loud weeping?" He asks; "the child is asleep, not dead." |
Mark 5:40 | and they were laughing at him. And he, having put all forth, doth take the father of the child, and the mother, and those with him, and goeth in where the child is lying, | And they were laughing at him. But he, having sent them all out, took the father of the child and her mother and those who were with him, and went in where the child was. | To this their reply is a scornful laugh. He, however, puts them all out, takes the child's father and mother and those He has brought with Him, and enters the room where the child lies. |
Mark 5:41 | and, having taken the hand of the child, he saith to her, `Talitha cumi;` which is, being interpreted, `Damsel (I say to thee), arise.` | And taking her by the hand, he said to her, Talitha cumi, which is, My child, I say to you, Get up. | Then, taking her by the hand, He says to her, "Talitha, koum;" that is to say, "Little girl, I command you to wake!" |
Mark 5:42 | And immediately the damsel arose, and was walking, for she was twelve years [old]; and they were amazed with a great amazement, | And the young girl got up straight away, and was walking about; she being twelve years old. And they were overcome with wonder. | Instantly the little girl rises to her feet and begins to walk (for she was twelve years old). They were at once beside themselves with utter astonishment; |
Mark 5:43 | and he charged them much, that no one may know this thing, and he said that there be given to her to eat. | And he gave them special orders that they were not to say anything of this; and he said that some food was to be given to her. | but He gave strict injunctions that the matter should not be made known, and directed them to give her something to eat. |
