Matthew 13:1 | And in that day Jesus, having gone forth from the house, was sitting by the sea, | On that day Jesus went out of the house and was seated by the seaside. | That same day Jesus had left the house and was sitting on the shore of the Lake, |
Matthew 13:2 | and gathered together unto him were many multitudes, so that he having gone into the boat did sit down, and all the multitude on the beach did stand, | And great numbers of people came together to him, so that he got into a boat; and the people took up their position by the sea. | when a vast multitude of people crowded round Him. He therefore went on board a boat and sat there, while all the people stood on the shore. |
Matthew 13:3 | and he spake to them many things in similes, saying: `Lo, the sower went forth to sow, | And he gave them teaching in the form of a story, saying, A man went out to put seed in the earth; | He then spoke many things to them in figurative language. "The sower goes out," He said, "to sow. |
Matthew 13:4 | and in his sowing, some indeed fell by the way, and the fowls did come and devour them, | And while he did so, some seeds were dropped by the wayside, and the birds came and took them for food: | As he sows, some of the seed falls by the way-side, and the birds come and peck it up. |
Matthew 13:5 | and others fell upon the rocky places, where they had not much earth, and immediately they sprang forth, through not having depth of earth, | And some of the seed went among the stones, where it had not much earth, and straight away it came up because the earth was not deep: | Some falls on rocky ground, where it has but scanty soil. It quickly shows itself above ground, because it has no depth of earth; |
Matthew 13:6 | and the sun having risen they were scorched, and through not having root, they withered, | And when the sun was high, it was burned; and because it had no root it became dry and dead. | but when the sun is risen, it is scorched by the heat, and through having no root it withers up. |
Matthew 13:7 | and others fell upon the thorns, and the thorns did come up and choke them, | And some seeds went among thorns, and the thorns came up and they had no room for growth: | Some falls among the thorns; but the thorns spring up and stifle it. |
Matthew 13:8 | and others fell upon the good ground, and were giving fruit, some indeed a hundredfold, and some sixty, and some thirty. | And some, falling on good earth, gave fruit, some a hundred, some sixty, some thirty times as much. | But a portion falls upon good ground, and gives a return, some a hundred for one, some sixty, some thirty. |
Matthew 13:9 | He who is having ears to hear let him hear.` | He who has ears, let him give ear. | Listen, every one who has ears!" |
Matthew 13:10 | And the disciples having come near, said to him, `Wherefore in similes dost thou speak to them?` | And the disciples came and said to him, Why do you say things to them in the form of stories? | (And His disciples came and asked Him, "Why do you speak to them in figurative language?" |
Matthew 13:11 | And he answering said to them that `To you it hath been given to know the secrets of the reign of the heavens, and to these it hath not been given, | And he said to them in answer, To you is given the knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given. | "Because," He replied, "while to you it is granted to know the secrets of the Kingdom of the Heavens, to them it is not. |
Matthew 13:12 | for whoever hath, it shall be given to him, and he shall have overabundance, and whoever hath not, even that which he hath shall be taken from him. | Because whoever has, to him will be given, and he will have more; but from him who has not, even what he has will be taken away. | For whoever has, to him more shall be given, and he shall have abundance; but whoever has not, from him even what he has shall be taken away. |
Matthew 13:13 | `Because of this, in similes do I speak to them, because seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not hear, nor understand, | For this reason I put things into the form of stories; because they see without seeing, and give ear without hearing, and the sense is not clear to them. | I speak to them in figurative language for this reason, that while looking they do not see, and while hearing they neither hear nor understand. |
Matthew 13:14 | and fulfilled on them is the prophecy of Isaiah, that saith, With hearing ye shall hear, and ye shall not understand, and seeing ye shall see, and ye shall not perceive, | And for them the words of Isaiah have come true, Though you give ear, you will not get knowledge; and seeing, you will see, but the sense will not be clear to you: | And in regard to them the prophecy of Isaiah is receiving signal fulfilment: "`You will hear and hear and by no means understand, and you will look and look and by no means see. |
Matthew 13:15 | for made gross was the heart of this people, and with the ears they heard heavily, and their eyes they did close, lest they might see with the eyes, and with the ears might hear, and with the heart understand, and turn back, and I might heal them. | For the heart of this people has become fat and their ears are slow in hearing and their eyes are shut; for fear that they might see with their eyes and give hearing with their ears and become wise in their hearts and be turned again to me, so that I might make them well. | For this people's mind is stupefied, their hearing has become dull, and their eyes they have closed; to prevent their ever seeing with their eyes, or hearing with their ears, or understanding with their minds, and turning back, so that I might heal them.' |
Matthew 13:16 | `And happy are your eyes because they see, and your ears because they hear, | But a blessing be on your eyes, because they see; and on your ears, because they are open. | "But as for you, blessed are your eyes, for they see, and your ears, for they hear. |
Matthew 13:17 | for verily I say to you, that many prophets and righteous men did desire to see that which ye look on, and they did not see, and to hear that which ye hear, and they did not hear. | For truly, I say to you that prophets and upright men had a desire to see the things which you see, and saw them not; and to have knowledge of the words which have come to your ears, and they had it not. | For I solemnly tell you that many Prophets and holy men have longed to see the sights you see, and have not seen them, and to hear the words you hear, and have not heard them. |
Matthew 13:18 | `Ye, therefore, hear ye the simile of the sower: | Give ear, then, to the story of the man who put the seed in the earth. | "To you then I will explain the parable of the Sower. |
Matthew 13:19 | Every one hearing the word of the reign, and not understanding the evil one doth come, and doth catch that which hath been sown in his heart; this is that sown by the way. | When the word of the kingdom comes to anyone, and the sense of it is not clear to him, then the Evil One comes, and quickly takes away that which was put in his heart. He is the seed dropped by the wayside. | When a man hears the Message concerning the Kingdom and does not understand it, the Evil one comes and catches away what has been sown in his heart. This is he who has received the seed by the road-side. |
Matthew 13:20 | `And that sown on the rocky places, this is he who is hearing the word, and immediately with joy is receiving it, | And that which went on the stones, this is he who, hearing the word, straight away takes it with joy; | He who has received the seed on the rocky ground is the man who hears the Message and immediately receives it with joy. |
Matthew 13:21 | and he hath not root in himself, but is temporary, and persecution or tribulation having happened because of the word, immediately he is stumbled. | But having no root in himself, he goes on for a time; and when trouble comes or pain, because of the word, he quickly becomes full of doubts. | It has struck no root, however, within him. He continues for a time, but when suffering comes, or persecution, because of the Message, he at once stumbles and falls. |
Matthew 13:22 | `And that sown toward the thorns, this is he who is hearing the word, and the anxiety of this age, and the deceitfulness of the riches, do choke the word, and it becometh unfruitful. | And that which was dropped among the thorns, this is he who has the word; and the cares of this life, and the deceits of wealth, put a stop to the growth of the word and it gives no fruit. | He who has received the seed among the thorns is the man who hears the Message, but the cares of the present age and the delusions of riches quite stifle the Message, and it becomes unfruitful. |
Matthew 13:23 | `And that sown on the good ground: this is he who is hearing the word, and is understanding, who indeed doth bear fruit, and doth make, some indeed a hundredfold, and some sixty, and some thirty.` | And the seed which was put in good earth, this is he who gives ear to the word, and gets the sense of it; who gives fruit, some a hundred, some sixty, some thirty times as much. | But he who has received the seed on good ground is he who hears and understands. Such hearers give a return, and yield one a hundred for one, another sixty, another thirty.") |
Matthew 13:24 | Another simile he set before them, saying: `The reign of the heavens was likened to a man sowing good seed in his field, | And he gave them another story, saying, The kingdom of heaven is like a man who put good seed in his field: | Another parable He put before them. "The Kingdom of the Heavens," He said, "may be compared to a man who has sown good seed in his field, |
Matthew 13:25 | and, while men are sleeping, his enemy came and sowed darnel in the midst of the wheat, and went away, | But while men were sleeping, one who had hate for him came and put evil seeds among the grain, and went away. | but during the night his enemy comes, and over the first seed he sows darnel among the wheat, and goes away. |
Matthew 13:26 | and when the herb sprang up, and yielded fruit, then appeared also the darnel. | But when the green stem came up and gave fruit, the evil plants were seen at the same time. | But when the blade shoots up and the grain is formed, then appears the darnel also. |
Matthew 13:27 | `And the servants of the householder, having come near, said to him, Sir, good seed didst thou not sow in thy field? whence then hath it the darnel? | And the servants of the master of the house came and said to him, Sir, did you not put good seed in your field? how then has it evil plants? | "So the farmer's men come and ask him, "`Sir, was it not good seed that you sowed on your land? Where then does the darnel come from?' |
Matthew 13:28 | And he saith to them, A man, an enemy, did this; and the servants said to him, Wilt thou, then, [that] having gone away we may gather it up? | And he said, Someone has done this in hate. And the servants say to him, Is it your pleasure that we go and take them up? | "`Some enemy has done this,' he said. "`Shall we go, and collect it?' the men inquire. |
Matthew 13:29 | `And he said, No, lest gathering up the darnel ye root up with it the wheat, | But he says, No, for fear that by chance while you take up the evil plants, you may be rooting up the grain with them. | "`No,' he replied, `for fear that while collecting the darnel you should at the same time root up the wheat with it. |
Matthew 13:30 | suffer both to grow together till the harvest, and in the time of the harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather up first the darnel, and bind it in bundles, to burn it, and the wheat gather up into my storehouse.` | Let them come up together till the getting in of the grain; and then I will say to the workers, Take up first the evil plants, and put them together for burning: but put the grain into my store-house. | Leave both to grow together until the harvest, and at harvest-time I will direct the reapers, Collect the darnel first, and make it up into bundles to burn it, but bring all the wheat into my barn.'" |
Matthew 13:31 | Another simile he set before them, saying: `The reign of the heavens is like to a grain of mustard, which a man having taken, did sow in his field, | He put another story before them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is like a grain of mustard seed which a man took and put in his field: | Another parable He put before them. "The Kingdom of the Heavens," He said, "is like a mustard-seed, which a man takes and sows in his ground. |
Matthew 13:32 | which less, indeed, is than all the seeds, but when it may be grown, is greatest of the herbs, and becometh a tree, so that the birds of the heaven do come and rest in its branches.` | Which is smaller than all seeds; but when it has come up it is greater than the plants, and becomes a tree, so that the birds of heaven come and make their resting-places in its branches. | It is the smallest of all seeds, and yet when full-grown it is larger than any herb and forms a tree, so that the birds come and build in its branches." |
Matthew 13:33 | Another simile spake he to them: `The reign of the heavens is like to leaven, which a woman having taken, hid in three measures of meal, till the whole was leavened.` | Another story he gave to them: The kingdom of heaven is like leaven, which a woman took, and put in three measures of meal, till it was all leavened. | Another parable He spoke to them. "The Kingdom of the Heavens," He said, "is like yeast which a woman takes and buries in a bushel of flour, for it to work there till the whole mass has risen." |
Matthew 13:34 | All these things spake Jesus in similes to the multitudes, and without a simile he was not speaking to them, | All these things Jesus said to the people in the form of stories; and without a story he said nothing to them: | All this Jesus spoke to the people in figurative language, and except in figurative language He spoke nothing to them, |
Matthew 13:35 | that it might be fulfilled that was spoken through the prophet, saying, `I will open in similes my mouth, I will utter things having been hidden from the foundation of the world.` | That it might come true which was said by the prophet, Opening my mouth, I will give out stories; I will give knowledge of things kept secret from before all time. | in fulfilment of the saying of the Prophet, "I will open my mouth in figurative language, I will utter things kept hidden since the creation of all things." |
Matthew 13:36 | Then having let away the multitudes, Jesus came to the house, and his disciples came near to him, saying, `Explain to us the simile of the darnel of the field.` | Then he went away from the people, and went into the house; and his disciples came to him, saying, Make clear to us the story of the evil plants in the field. | When He had dismissed the people and had returned to the house, His disciples came to Him with the request, "Explain to us the parable of the darnel sown in the field." |
Matthew 13:37 | And he answering said to them, `He who is sowing the good seed is the Son of Man, | And he made answer and said, He who puts the good seed in the earth is the Son of man; | "The sower of the good seed," He replied, "is the Son of Man; |
Matthew 13:38 | and the field is the world, and the good seed, these are the sons of the reign, and the darnel are the sons of the evil one, | And the field is the world; and the good seed is the sons of the kingdom; and the evil seeds are the sons of the Evil One; | the field is the world; the good seed these are the sons of the Kingdom; the darnel, the sons of the Evil one. |
Matthew 13:39 | and the enemy who sowed them is the devil, and the harvest is a full end of the age, and the reapers are messengers. | And he who put them in the earth is Satan; and the getting in of the grain is the end of the world; and those who get it in are the angels. | The enemy who sows the darnel is *the Devil*; the harvest is the Close of the Age; the reapers are the angels. |
Matthew 13:40 | `As, then, the darnel is gathered up, and is burned with fire, so shall it be in the full end of this age, | As then the evil plants are got together and burned with fire, so will it be in the end of the world. | As then the darnel is collected together and burnt up with fire, so will it be at the Close of the Age. |
Matthew 13:41 | the Son of Man shall send forth his messengers, and they shall gather up out of his kingdom all the stumbling-blocks, and those doing the unlawlessness, | The Son of man will send out his angels, and they will take out of his kingdom everything which is a cause of error, and all those who do wrong, | The Son of Man will commission His angels, and they will gather out of His Kingdom all causes of sin and all who violate His laws; |
Matthew 13:42 | and shall cast them to the furnace of the fire; there shall be the weeping and the gnashing of the teeth. | And will put them into the fire; there will be weeping and cries of sorrow. | and these they will throw into the fiery furnace. There will be the weeping aloud and the gnashing of teeth. |
Matthew 13:43 | `Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun in the reign of their Father. He who is having ears to hear let him hear. | Then will the upright be shining as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. He who has ears, let him give ear. | Then will the righteous shine out like the sun in their Father's Kingdom. Listen, every one who has ears! |
Matthew 13:44 | `Again, the reign of the heavens is like to treasure hid in the field, which a man having found did hide, and from his joy goeth, and all, as much as he hath, he selleth, and buyeth that field. | The kingdom of heaven is like a secret store of wealth in a field, which a man came across and put back again; and in his joy he goes and gives all he has, to get that field. | "The Kingdom of the Heavens is like treasure buried in the open country, which a man finds, but buries again, and, in his joy about it, goes and sells all he has and buys that piece of ground. |
Matthew 13:45 | `Again, the reign of the heavens is like to a man, a merchant, seeking goodly pearls, | Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a trader searching for beautiful jewels. | "Again the Kingdom of the Heavens is like a jewel merchant who is in quest of choice pearls. |
Matthew 13:46 | who having found one pearl of great price, having gone away, hath sold all, as much as he had, and bought it. | And having come across one jewel of great price, he went and gave all he had in exchange for it. | He finds one most costly pearl; he goes away; and though it costs all he has, he buys it. |
Matthew 13:47 | `Again, the reign of the heavens is like to a net that was cast into the sea, and did gather together of every kind, | Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net, which was put into the sea and took in every sort of fish: | "Again the Kingdom of the Heavens is like a draw-net let down into the sea, which encloses fish of all sorts. |
Matthew 13:48 | which, when it was filled, having drawn up again upon the beach, and having sat down, they gathered the good into vessels, and the bad they did cast out, | When it was full, they took it up on the sands; and seated there they put the good into vessels, but the bad they put away. | When full, they haul it up on the beach, and sit down and collect the good fish in baskets, while the worthless they throw away. |
Matthew 13:49 | so shall it be in the full end of the age, the messengers shall come forth and separate the evil out of the midst of the righteous, | So will it be in the end of the world: the angels will come and take out the bad from the good, | So will it be at the Close of the Age. The angels will go forth and separate the wicked from among the righteous, |
Matthew 13:50 | and shall cast them to the furnace of the fire, there shall be the weeping and the gnashing of the teeth.` | And will put them into the fire: there will be weeping and cries of sorrow. | and will throw them into the fiery furnace. There will be the weeping aloud and the gnashing of teeth." |
Matthew 13:51 | Jesus saith to them, `Did ye understand all these?` They say to him, `Yes, sir.` | Are all these things now clear to you? They say to him, Yes. | "Have you understood all this?" He asked. "Yes," they said. |
Matthew 13:52 | And he said to them, `Because of this every scribe having been discipled in regard to the reign of the heavens, is like to a man, a householder, who doth bring forth out of his treasure things new and old.` | And he said to them, For this reason every scribe who has become a disciple of the kingdom of heaven is like the owner of a house, who gives out from his store things new and old. | "Therefore," He said, "remember that every Scribe well trained for the Kingdom of the Heavens is like a householder who brings out of his storehouse new things and old." |
Matthew 13:53 | And it came to pass, when Jesus finished these similes, he removed thence, | And when Jesus had come to the end of these stories he went away from there. | Jesus concluded this series of parables and then departed. |
Matthew 13:54 | and having come to his own country, he was teaching them in their synagogue, so that they were astonished, and were saying, `Whence to this one this wisdom and the mighty works? | And coming into his country, he gave them teaching in their Synagogue, so that they were greatly surprised and said, Where did this man get this wisdom and these works of power? | And He came into His own country and proceeded to teach in their synagogue, so that they were filled with astonishment and exclaimed, "Where did he obtain such wisdom, and these wondrous powers? |
Matthew 13:55 | is not this the carpenter`s son? is not his mother called Mary, and his brethren James, and Joses, and Simon, and Judas? | Is not this the woodworker's son? is not his mother named Mary? and his brothers James and Joseph and Simon and Judas? | Is not this the carpenter's son? Is not his mother called Mary? And are not his brothers, James, Joseph, Simon and Judah? |
Matthew 13:56 | and his sisters are they not all with us? whence, then, to this one all these?` | And his sisters, are they not all with us? from where, then, has he all these things? | And his sisters are they not all living here among us? Where then did he get all this?" |
Matthew 13:57 | and they were stumbled at him. And Jesus said to them, `A prophet is not without honor except in his own country, and in his own house:` | And they were bitter against him. But Jesus said to them, A prophet is nowhere without honour but in his country and among his family. | So they turned angrily away from Him. But Jesus said to them, "There is no prophet left without honour except in his own country and among his own family." |
Matthew 13:58 | and he did not there many mighty works, because of their unbelief. | And the works of power which he did there were small in number because they had no faith. | And He performed but few mighty deeds there because of their want of faith. |
