Matthew 21:2 | saying to them, `Go on to the village over-against you, and immediately ye shall find an ass bound, and a colt with her having loosed, bring ye to me; | Saying to them, Go into the little town in front of you, and straight away you will see an ass with a cord round her neck, and a young one with her; let them loose and come with them to me. | saying to them, "Go to the village you see facing you, and as you enter it you will find a she-ass tied up and a foal with her. Untie her and bring them to me. |
Matthew 21:3 | and if any one may say anything to you, ye shall say, that the lord hath need of them, and immediately he will send them.` | And if anyone says anything to you, you will say, The Lord has need of them; and straight away he will send them. | And if any one says anything to you, say, `The Master needs them,' and he will at once send them." |
Matthew 21:4 | And all this came to pass, that it might be fulfilled that was spoken through the prophet, saying, | Now this took place so that these words of the prophet might come true, | This took place in order that the Prophet's prediction might be fulfilled: |
Matthew 21:5 | `Tell ye the daughter of Zion, Lo, thy king doth come to thee, meek, and mounted on an ass, and a colt, a foal of a beast of burden.` | Say to the daughter of Zion, See, your King comes to you, gentle and seated on an ass, and on a young ass. | "Tell the Daughter of Zion, `See, thy King is coming to thee, gentle, and yet mounted on an ass, even on a colt the foal of a beast of burden.'" |
Matthew 21:6 | And the disciples having gone and having done as Jesus commanded them, | And the disciples went and did as Jesus had given them orders, | So the disciples went and did as Jesus had instructed them: |
Matthew 21:7 | brought the ass and the colt, and did put on them their garments, and set [him] upon them; | And got the ass and the young one, and put their clothing on them, and he took his seat on it. | they brought the she-ass and the foal, and threw their outer garments on them. So He sat on them; |
Matthew 21:8 | and the very great multitude spread their own garments in the way, and others were cutting branches from the trees, and were strewing in the way, | And all the people put their clothing down in the way; and others got branches from the trees, and put them down in the way. | and most of the crowd kept spreading their garments along the road, while others cut branches from the trees and carpeted the road with them, |
Matthew 21:9 | and the multitudes who were going before, and who were following, were crying, saying, `Hosanna to the Son of David, blessed is he who is coming in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest.` | And those who went before him, and those who came after, gave loud cries, saying, Glory to the Son of David: A blessing on him who comes in the name of the Lord: Glory in the highest. | and the multitudes some of the people preceding Him and some following sang aloud, "God save the Son of David! Blessings on Him who comes in the Lord's name! God in the highest Heavens save Him!" |
Matthew 21:10 | And he having entered into Jerusalem, all the city was moved, saying, `Who is this?` | And when he came into Jerusalem, all the town was moved, saying, Who is this? | When He thus entered Jerusalem, the whole city was thrown into commotion, every one inquiring, "Who is this?" |
Matthew 21:11 | And the multitudes said, `This is Jesus the prophet, who [is] from Nazareth of Galilee.` | And the people said, This is the prophet Jesus, from Nazareth of Galilee. | "This is Jesus, the Prophet, from Nazareth in Galilee," replied the crowds. |
Matthew 21:12 | And Jesus entered into the temple of God, and did cast forth all those selling and buying in the temple, and the tables of the money-changers he overturned, and the seats of those selling the doves, | And Jesus went into the Temple and sent out all who were trading there, overturning the tables of the money-changers and the seats of those trading in doves. | Entering the Temple, Jesus drove out all who were buying and selling there, and overturned the money-changers' tables and the seats of the pigeon-dealers. |
Matthew 21:13 | and he saith to them, `It hath been written, My house a house of prayer shall be called, but ye did make it a den of robbers.` | And he said to them, It is in the Writings, My house is to be named a house of prayer, but you are making it a hole of thieves. | "It is written," He said, "`My House shall be called the House of Prayer', but you are making it a robbers' cave." |
Matthew 21:14 | And there came to him blind and lame men in the temple, and he healed them, | And the blind and the broken in body came to him in the Temple, and he made them well. | And the blind and the lame came to Him in the Temple, and He cured them. |
Matthew 21:15 | and the chief priests and the scribes having seen the wonderful things that he did, and the children crying in the temple, and saying, `Hosanna to the Son of David,` were much displeased; | But when the chief priests and the scribes saw the works of power which he did, and the children crying out in the Temple, Glory to the son of David, they were angry and said to him, | But when the High Priests and the Scribes saw the wonderful things that He had done and the children who were crying aloud in the Temple, "God save the Son of David," they were filled with indignation. |
Matthew 21:16 | and they said to him, `Hearest thou what these say?` And Jesus saith to them, `Yes, did ye never read, that, Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings Thou didst prepare praise?` | Have you any idea what these are saying? And Jesus said to them, Yes: have you not seen in the Writings, From the lips of children and babies at the breast you have made your praise complete? | "Do you hear," they asked Him, "what these children are saying?" "Yes," He replied; "have you never read, `Out of the mouths of infants and of babes at the breast Thou hast brought forth the praise which is due'?" |
Matthew 21:17 | And having left them, he went forth out of the city to Bethany, and did lodge there, | And he went away from them, and went out of the town to Bethany, and was there for the night. | So He left them and went out of the city to Bethany and passed the night there. |
Matthew 21:18 | and in the morning turning back to the city, he hungered, | Now in the morning when he was coming back to the town, he had a desire for food. | Early in the morning as He was on His way to return to the city He was hungry, |
Matthew 21:19 | and having seen a certain fig-tree on the way, he came to it, and found nothing in it except leaves only, and he saith to it, `No more from thee may fruit be to the age;` and forthwith the fig-tree withered. | And seeing a fig-tree by the wayside, he came to it, and saw nothing on it but leaves only; and he said to it, Let there be no fruit from you from this time forward for ever. And straight away the fig-tree became dry and dead. | and seeing a fig-tree on the road-side He went up to it, but found nothing on it but leaves. "On you," He said, "no fruit shall ever again grow." And immediately the fig-tree withered away. |
Matthew 21:20 | And the disciples having seen, did wonder, saying, `How did the fig-tree forthwith wither?` | And when the disciples saw it they were surprised, saying, How did the fig-tree become dry in so short a time? | When the disciples saw it they exclaimed in astonishment, "How instantaneously the fig-tree has withered away!" |
Matthew 21:21 | And Jesus answering said to them, `Verily I say to you, If ye may have faith, and may not doubt, not only this of the fig-tree shall ye do, but even if to this mount ye may say, Be lifted up and be cast into the sea, it shall come to pass; | And Jesus in answer said to them, Truly I say to you, If you have faith, without doubting, not only may you do what has been done to the fig-tree, but even if you say to this mountain, Be taken up and put into the sea, it will be done. | "I solemnly tell you," said Jesus, "that if you have an unwavering faith, you shall not only perform such a miracle as this of the fig-tree, but that even if you say to this mountain, `Be thou lifted up and hurled into the sea,' it shall be done; |
Matthew 21:22 | and all as much as ye may ask in the prayer, believing, ye shall receive.` | And all things, whatever you make request for in prayer, having faith, you will get. | and everything, whatever it be, that you ask for in your prayers, if you have faith, you shall obtain." |
Matthew 21:23 | And he having come to the temple, there came to him when teaching the chief priests and the elders of the people, saying, `By what authority dost thou do these things? and who gave thee this authority?` | And when he had come into the Temple, the chief priests and those in authority over the people came to him while he was teaching, and said, By what authority do you do these things? and who gave you this authority? | He entered the Temple; and while He was teaching, the High Priests and the Elders of the people came to Him and asked Him, "By what authority are you doing these things? and who gave you this authority?" |
Matthew 21:24 | And Jesus answering said to them, `I will ask you I also one word, which if ye may tell me, I also will tell you by what authority I do these things; | And Jesus said to them in answer, I will put one question to you, and if you give me the answer, I will say by what authority I do these things. | "And I also have a question to ask *you*," replied Jesus, "and if you answer me, I in turn will tell you by what authority I do these things. |
Matthew 21:25 | the baptism of John, whence was it? from heaven, or from men?` And they were reasoning with themselves, saying, `If we should say, From heaven; he will say to us, Wherefore, then, did ye not believe him? | The baptism of John, where did it come from? from heaven or from men? And they were reasoning among themselves, saying, If we say, From heaven; he will say to us, Why then did you not have faith in him? | John's Baptism, whence was it? had it a heavenly or a human origin?" So they debated the matter among themselves. "If we say `a heavenly origin,'" they argued, "he will say, `Why then did you not believe him?' |
Matthew 21:26 | and if we should say, From men, we fear the multitude, for all hold John as a prophet.` | But if we say, From men; we are in fear of the people, because all take John to be a prophet. | and if we say `a human origin' we have the people to fear, for they all hold John to have been a Prophet." |
Matthew 21:27 | And answering Jesus they said, `We have not known.` He said to them he also `Neither do I tell you by what authority I do these things. | And they made answer and said, We have no idea. Then he said to them, And I will not say to you by what authority I do these things. | So they answered Jesus, "We do not know." "Nor do I tell you," He replied, "by what authority I do these things." |
Matthew 21:28 | `And what think ye? A man had two children, and having come to the first, he said, Child, go, to-day be working in my vineyard.` | But how does it seem to you? A man had two sons; and he came to the first, and said, Son, go and do work today in the vine-garden. | "But give me your judgement. There was a man who had two sons. He came to the elder of them, and said, "`My son, go and work in the vineyard to-day.' |
Matthew 21:29 | And he answering said, `I will not,` but at last, having repented, he went. | And he said in answer, I will not: but later, changing his decision, he went. | "`I will not,' he replied. "But afterwards he was sorry, and went. |
Matthew 21:30 | `And having come to the second, he said in the same manner, and he answering said, I [go], sir, and went not; | And he came to the second and said the same. And he made answer and said, I go, sir: and went not. | He came to the second and spoke in the same manner. His answer was, "`I will go, Sir.' "But he did not go. |
Matthew 21:31 | which of the two did the will of the father?` They say to him, `The first.` Jesus saith to them, `Verily I say to you, that the tax-gatherers and the harlots do go before you into the reign of God, | Which of the two did his father's pleasure? They say, The first. Jesus said to them, Truly I say to you, that tax-farmers and loose women are going into the kingdom of God before you. | Which of the two did as his father desired?" "The first," they said. "I solemnly tell you,' replied Jesus, "that the tax-gatherers and the notorious sinners are entering the Kingdom of God in front of you. |
Matthew 21:32 | for John came unto you in the way of righteousness, and ye did not believe him, and the tax-gatherers and the harlots did believe him, and ye, having seen, repented not at last to believe him. | For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you had no faith in him, but the tax-farmers and the loose women had faith in him: and you, when you saw it, did not even have regret for your sins, so as to have faith in him. | For John came to you observing all sorts of ritual, and you put no faith in him: the tax-gatherers and the notorious sinners did put faith in him, and you, though you saw this example set you, were not even afterwards sorry so as to believe him. |
Matthew 21:33 | `Hear ye another simile: There was a certain man, a householder, who planted a vineyard, and did put a hedge round it, and digged in it a wine-press, and built a tower, and gave it out to husbandmen, and went abroad. | Give ear to another story. A master of a house made a vine garden, and put a wall round it, and made a place for crushing out the wine, and made a tower, and let it out to field-workers, and went into another country. | "Listen to another parable. There was a householder who planted a vineyard, made a fence round it, dug a wine-tank in it, and built a strong lodge; then let the place to vine-dressers, and went abroad. |
Matthew 21:34 | `And when the season of the fruits came nigh, he sent his servants unto the husbandmen, to receive the fruits of it, | And when the time for the fruit came near, he sent his servants to the workmen, to get the fruit. | When vintage-time approached, he sent his servants to the vine-dressers to receive his share of the grapes; |
Matthew 21:35 | and the husbandmen having taken his servants, one they scourged, and one they killed, and one they stoned. | And the workmen made an attack on his servants, giving blows to one, putting another to death, and stoning another. | but the vine-dressers seized the servants, and one they cruelly beat, one they killed, one they pelted with stones. |
Matthew 21:36 | `Again he sent other servants more than the first, and they did to them in the same manner. | Again, he sent other servants more in number than the first: and they did the same to them. | Again he sent another party of servants more numerous than the first; and these they treated in the same manner. |
Matthew 21:37 | `And at last he sent unto them his son, saying, They will reverence my son; | But after that he sent his son to them, saying, They will have respect for my son. | Later still he sent to them his son, saying, "`They will respect my son.' |
Matthew 21:38 | and the husbandmen having seen the son, said among themselves, This is the heir, come, we may kill him, and may possess his inheritance; | But when the workmen saw the son, they said among themselves, This is he who will one day be the owner of the property; come, let us put him to death and take his heritage. | "But the vine-dressers, when they saw the son, said to one another, "`Here is the heir: come, let us kill him and get his inheritance.' |
Matthew 21:39 | and having taken him, they cast [him] out of the vineyard, and killed him; | And they took him and, driving him out of the vine-garden, put him to death. | "So they seized him, dragged him out of the vineyard, and killed him. |
Matthew 21:40 | whenever therefore the lord of the vineyard may come, what will he do to these husbandmen?` | When, then, the lord of the vine-garden comes, what will he do to those workmen? | When then the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those vine-dressers?" |
Matthew 21:41 | They say to him, `Evil men he will evilly destroy them, and the vineyard will give out to other husbandmen, who will give back to him the fruits in their seasons.` | They say to him, He will put those cruel men to a cruel death, and will let out the vine-garden to other workmen, who will give him the fruit when it is ready. | "He will put the wretches to a wretched death," was the reply, "and will entrust the vineyard to other vine-dressers who will render the produce to him at the vintage season." |
Matthew 21:42 | Jesus saith to them, `Did ye never read in the Writings, A stone that the builders disallowed, it became head of a corner; from the Lord hath this come to pass, and it is wonderful in our eyes. | Jesus says to them, Did you never see in the Writings, The stone which the builders put on one side, the same has been made the chief stone of the building: this was the Lord's doing, and it is a wonder in our eyes? | "Have you never read in the Scriptures," said Jesus, "`The Stone which the builders rejected has been made the Cornerstone: this Cornerstone came from the Lord, and is wonderful in our eyes'? |
Matthew 21:43 | `Because of this I say to you, that the reign of God shall be taken from you, and given to a nation bringing forth its fruit; | For this reason I say to you, The kingdom of God will be taken away from you, and will be given to a nation producing the fruits of it. | "That, I tell you, is the reason why the Kingdom of God will be taken away from you, and given to a nation that will exhibit the power of it. |
Matthew 21:44 | and he who is falling on this stone shall be broken, and on whomsoever it may fall it will crush him to pieces.` | Any man falling on this stone will be broken, but he on whom it comes down will be crushed to dust. | He who falls on this stone will be severely hurt; but he on whom it falls will be utterly crushed." |
Matthew 21:45 | And the chief priests and the Pharisees having heard his similes, knew that of them he speaketh, | And when his stories came to the ears of the chief priests and the Pharisees, they saw that he was talking of them. | After listening to His parables the High Priests and the Pharisees perceived that He was speaking about them; |
Matthew 21:46 | and seeking to lay hold on him, they feared the multitudes, seeing they were holding him as a prophet. | And though they had a desire to take him, they were in fear of the people, because in their eyes he was a prophet. | but though they were eager to lay hands upon Him, they were afraid of the people, for by them He was regarded as a Prophet. |
