Matthew 22:1 | And Jesus answering, again spake to them in similes, saying, | And Jesus, talking to them again in stories, said: | Again Jesus spoke to them in figurative language. |
Matthew 22:2 | `The reign of the heavens was likened to a man, a king, who made marriage-feasts for his son, | The kingdom of heaven is like a certain king, who made a feast when his son was married, | "The Kingdom of the Heavens," He said, "may be compared to a king who celebrated the marriage of his son, |
Matthew 22:3 | and he sent forth his servants to call those having been called to the marriage-feasts, and they were not willing to come. | And sent out his servants to get in the guests to the feast: and they would not come. | and sent his servants to call the invited guests to the wedding, but they were unwilling to come. |
Matthew 22:4 | `Again he sent forth other servants, saying, Say to those who have been called: Lo, my dinner I prepared, my oxen and the fatlings have been killed, and all things [are] ready, come ye to the marriage-feasts; | Again he sent out other servants, with orders to say to the guests, See, I have made ready my feast: my oxen and my fat beasts have been put to death, and all things are ready: come to the feast. | "Again he sent other servants with a message to those who were invited. "`My breakfast is now ready," he said, `my bullocks and fat cattle are killed, and every preparation is made: come to the wedding.' |
Matthew 22:5 | and they, having disregarded [it], went away, the one to his own field, and the other to his merchandise; | But they gave no attention, and went about their business, one to his farm, another to his trade: | "They however gave no heed, but went, one to his home in the country, another to his business; |
Matthew 22:6 | and the rest, having laid hold on his servants, did insult and slay [them]. | And the rest put violent hands on his servants, and did evil to them, and put them to death. | and the rest seized the king's servants, maltreated them, and murdered them. |
Matthew 22:7 | `And the king having heard, was wroth, and having sent forth his soldiers, he destroyed those murderers, and their city he set on fire; | But the king was angry; and he sent his armies, and those who had put his servants to death he gave to destruction, burning down their town with fire. | So the king's anger was stirred, and he sent his troops and destroyed those murderers and burnt their city. |
Matthew 22:8 | then saith he to his servants, The marriage-feast indeed is ready, and those called were not worthy, | Then he said to his servants, The feast is ready but the guests were not good enough. | Then he said to his servants, "`The wedding banquet is ready, but those who were invited were unworthy of it. |
Matthew 22:9 | be going, then, on to the cross-ways, and as many as ye may find, call ye to the marriage-feasts. | Go then to the cross-roads, and get all those whom you see to come to the bride-feast. | Go out therefore to the crossroads, and everybody you meet invite to the wedding.' |
Matthew 22:10 | `And those servants, having gone forth to the ways, did gather all, as many as they found, both bad and good, and the marriage-feast apartment was filled with those reclining. | And those servants went out into the streets, and got together all those whom they came across, bad and good: and the feast was full of guests. | "So they went out into the roads and gathered together all they could find, both bad and good, and the banqueting hall was filled with guests. |
Matthew 22:11 | `And the king having come in to view those reclining, saw there a man not clothed with clothing of the marriage-feast, | But when the king came in to see the guests, he saw there a man who had not on a guest's robe; | "Now the king came in to see the guests; and among them he discovered one who was not wearing a wedding-robe. |
Matthew 22:12 | and he saith to him, Comrade, how didst thou come in hither, not having clothing of the marriage-feast? and he was speechless. | And he says to him, Friend, how came you in here not having a guest's robe? And he had nothing to say. | "`My friend,' he said, `how is it that you came in here without a wedding robe?' |
Matthew 22:13 | `Then said the king to the ministrants, Having bound his feet and hands, take him up and cast forth to the outer darkness, there shall be the weeping and the gnashing of the teeth; | Then the king said to the servants, Put cords round his hands and feet and put him out into the dark; there will be weeping and cries of sorrow. | "The man stood speechless. Then the king said to the servants, "`Bind him hand and foot and fling him into the darkness outside: there will be the weeping aloud and the gnashing of teeth.' |
Matthew 22:14 | for many are called, and few chosen.` | For out of all to whom the good news has come, only a small number will get salvation. | "For there are many called, but few chosen." |
Matthew 22:15 | Then the Pharisees having gone, took counsel how they might ensnare him in words, | Then the Pharisees went and had a meeting to see how they might make use of his words to take him. | Then the Pharisees went and consulted together how they might entrap Him in His conversation. |
Matthew 22:16 | and they send to him their disciples with the Herodians, saying, `Teacher, we have known that thou art true, and the way of God in truth thou dost teach, and thou art not caring for any one, for thou dost not look to the face of men; | And they sent to him their disciples, with the Herodians, saying, Master, we see that you are true, and that you are teaching the true way of God, and have no fear of anyone, because you have no respect for a man's position. | So they sent to Him their disciples together with the Herodians; who said, "Teacher, we know that you are truthful and that you faithfully teach God's truth; and that no fear of man misleads you, for you are not biased by men's wealth or rank. |
Matthew 22:17 | tell us, therefore, what dost thou think? is it lawful to give tribute to Caesar or not?` | Give us, then, your opinion of this: Is it right to give tax to Caesar, or not? | Give us your judgement therefore: is it allowable for us to pay a poll-tax to Caesar, or not?" |
Matthew 22:18 | And Jesus having known their wickedness, said, `Why me do ye tempt, hypocrites? | But Jesus saw their trick and said, Oh false ones, why are you attempting to put me in the wrong? | Perceiving their wickedness, Jesus replied, "Why are you hypocrites trying to ensnare me? |
Matthew 22:19 | show me the tribute-coin?` and they brought to him a denary; | Let me see the tax money. And they gave him a penny. | Show me the tribute coin." And they brought Him a shilling. |
Matthew 22:20 | and he saith to them, `Whose [is] this image and the inscription?` | And he said to them, Whose is this image and name on it? | "Whose likeness and inscription," He asked, "is this?" |
Matthew 22:21 | they say to him, `Caesar`s;` then saith he to them, `Render therefore the things of Caesar to Caesar, and the things of God to God;` | They say to him, Caesar's. Then he said to them, Give to Caesar the things which are Caesar's, and to God the things which are God's. | "Caesar's," they replied. "Pay therefore," He rejoined, "what is Caesar's to Caesar; and what is God's to God." |

And they put this case to Him. |
Matthew 22:24 | `Teacher, Moses said, If any one may die not having children, his brother shall marry his wife, and shall raise up seed to his brother. | Master, Moses said, If a man, at the time of his death, has no children, let his brother take his wife, and get a family for his brother; | "Teacher," they said, "Moses enjoined, `If a man die childless, his brother shall marry his widow, and raise up a family for him.' |
Matthew 22:25 | `And there were with us seven brothers, and the first having married did die, and not having seed, he left his wife to his brother; | Now there were among us seven brothers; and the first was married and at his death, having no seed, gave his wife to his brother; | Now we had among us seven brothers. The eldest of them married, but died childless, leaving his wife to his brother. |
Matthew 22:26 | in like manner also the second, and the third, unto the seventh, | In the same way the second and the third, up to the seventh. | So also did the second and the third, down to the seventh, |
Matthew 22:27 | and last of all died also the woman; | And last of all the woman came to her end. | till the woman also died, after surviving them all. |
Matthew 22:28 | therefore in the rising again, of which of the seven shall she be wife for all had her?` | When they come back from the dead, then, whose wife will she be of the seven? because they all had her. | At the Resurrection, therefore, whose wife of the seven will she be? for they all married her." |
Matthew 22:29 | And Jesus answering said to them, `Ye go astray, not knowing the Writings, nor the power of God; | But Jesus said to them in answer, You are in error, not having knowledge of the Writings, or of the power of God. | The reply of Jesus was, "You are in error, through ignorance of the Scriptures and of the power of God. |
Matthew 22:30 | for in the rising again they do not marry, nor are they given in marriage, but are as messengers of God in heaven. | For when they come back from the dead there are no husbands and wives, but they are as the angels in heaven. | For in the Resurrection, men neither marry nor are women given in marriage, but they are like angels in Heaven. |
Matthew 22:31 | `And concerning the rising again of the dead, did ye not read that which was spoken to you by God, saying, | But about the dead coming back to life, have you no knowledge of what was said to you by God in the Writings: | But as to the Resurrection of the dead, have you never read what God says to you, |
Matthew 22:32 | I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? God is not a God of dead men, but of living.` | I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? God is not the God of the dead but of the living. | `I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob'? He is not the God of dead, but of living men." |

Matthew 22:35 | and one of them, a lawyer, did question, tempting him, and saying, | And one of them, a teacher of the law, put a question to him, testing him, and saying, | and one of them, an expounder of the Law, asked Him as a test question, |
Matthew 22:36 | `Teacher, which [is] the great command in the Law?` | Master, which is the chief rule in the law? | "Teacher, which is the greatest Commandment in the Law?" |

Matthew 22:38 | this is a first and great command; | This is the first and greatest rule. | This is the greatest and foremost Commandment. |
Matthew 22:39 | and the second [is] like to it, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself; | And a second like it is this, Have love for your neighbour as for yourself. | And the second is similar to it: `Thou shalt love thy fellow man as much as thyself.' |

Matthew 22:43 | He saith to them, `How then doth David in the Spirit call him lord, saying, | He says to them, How then does David in the Spirit give him the name of Lord, saying, | "How then," He asked, "does David, taught by the Spirit, call Him Lord, when he says, |
Matthew 22:44 | The Lord said to my lord, Sit at my right hand, till I may make thine enemies thy footstool? | The Lord said to my Lord, Be seated at my right hand, till I put under your feet all those who are against you? | "`The Lord said to my Lord, sit at My right hand until I have put thy foes beneath thy feet'? |
Matthew 22:45 | If then David doth call him lord, how is he his son?` | If David then gives him the name of Lord, how is he his son? | "If therefore David calls Him Lord, how can He be his son?" |
Matthew 22:46 | And no one was able to answer him a word, nor durst any from that day question him any more. | And no one was able to give him an answer, and so great was their fear of him, that from that day no one put any more questions to him. | No one could say a word in reply, nor from that day did any one venture again to put a question to Him. |
