Exodus 20:1 | `And God speaketh all these words, saying, | And God said all these words: | God spoke all these words, saying, |
Exodus 20:2 | I [am] Jehovah thy God, who hath brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of a house of servants. | I am the Lord your God who took you out of the land of Egypt, out of the prison-house. | "I am Yahweh your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. |
Exodus 20:3 | `Thou hast no other Gods before Me. | You are to have no other gods but me. | You shall have no other gods before me. |
Exodus 20:4 | `Thou dost not make to thyself a graven image, or any likeness which [is] in the heavens above, or which [is] in the earth beneath, or which [is] in the waters under the earth. | You are not to make an image or picture of anything in heaven or on the earth or in the waters under the earth: | "You shall not make for yourselves an idol, nor any image of anything that is in the heavens above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: |
Exodus 20:5 | Thou dost not bow thyself to them, nor serve them: for I, Jehovah thy God, [am] a zealous God, charging iniquity of fathers on sons, on the third [generation], and on the fourth, of those hating Me, | You may not go down on your faces before them or give them worship: for I, the Lord your God, am a God who will not give his honour to another; and I will send punishment on the children for the wrongdoing of their fathers, to the third and fourth generation of my haters; | you shall not bow yourself down to them, nor serve them, for I, Yahweh your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and on the fourth generation of those who hate me, |
Exodus 20:6 | and doing kindness to thousands, of those loving Me and keeping My commands. | And I will have mercy through a thousand generations on those who have love for me and keep my laws. | and showing lovingkindness to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments. |
Exodus 20:7 | `Thou dost not take up the name of Jehovah thy God for a vain thing, for Jehovah acquitteth not him who taketh up His name for a vain thing. | You are not to make use of the name of the Lord your God for an evil purpose; whoever takes the Lord's name on his lips for an evil purpose will be judged a sinner by the Lord | "You shall not take the name of Yahweh your God in vain, for Yahweh will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain. |
Exodus 20:8 | `Remember the Sabbath-day to sanctify it; | Keep in memory the Sabbath and let it be a holy day. | "Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. |
Exodus 20:9 | six days thou dost labour, and hast done all thy work, | On six days do all your work: | You shall labor six days, and do all your work, |
Exodus 20:10 | and the seventh day [is] a Sabbath to Jehovah thy God; thou dost not do any work, thou, and thy son, and thy daughter, thy man-servant, and thy handmaid, and thy cattle, and thy sojourner who is within thy gates, | But the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God; on that day you are to do no work, you or your son or your daughter, your man-servant or your woman-servant, your cattle or the man from a strange country who is living among you: | but the seventh day is a Sabbath to Yahweh your God. You shall not do any work in it, you, nor your son, nor your daughter, your man-servant, nor your maid-servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates; |
Exodus 20:11 | for six days hath Jehovah made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that [is] in them, and resteth in the seventh day; therefore hath Jehovah blessed the Sabbath-day, and doth sanctify it. | For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, and the sea, and everything in them, and he took his rest on the seventh day: for this reason the Lord has given his blessing to the seventh day and made it holy. | for in six days Yahweh made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day; therefore Yahweh blessed the Sabbath day, and made it holy. |
Exodus 20:12 | `Honour thy father and thy mother, so that thy days are prolonged on the ground which Jehovah thy God is giving to thee. | Give honour to your father and to your mother, so that your life may be long in the land which the Lord your God is giving you. | "Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land which Yahweh your God gives you. |
Exodus 20:13 | `Thou dost not murder. | Do not put anyone to death without cause. | "You shall not murder. |
Exodus 20:14 | `Thou dost not commit adultery. | Do not be false to the married relation. | "You shall not commit adultery. |
Exodus 20:15 | `Thou dost not steal. | Do not take the property of another. | "You shall not steal. |
Exodus 20:16 | `Thou dost not answer against thy neighbour a false testimony. | Do not give false witness against your neighbour. | "You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor. |
Exodus 20:17 | `Thou dost not desire the house of thy neighbour, thou dost not desire the wife of thy neighbour, or his man-servant, or his handmaid, or his ox, or his ass, or anything which [is] thy neighbour`s.` | Let not your desire be turned to your neighbour's house, or his wife or his man-servant or his woman-servant or his ox or his ass or anything which is his. | "You shall not covet your neighbor's house. You shall not covet your neighbor's wife, nor his man-servant, nor his maid-servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbor's." |
Exodus 20:18 | And all the people are seeing the voices, and the flames, and the sound of the trumpet, and the mount smoking; and the people see, and move, and stand afar off, | And all the people were watching the thunderings and the flames and the sound of the horn and the mountain smoking; and when they saw it, they kept far off, shaking with fear. | All the people perceived the thunderings, the lightnings, the sound of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking. When the people saw it, they trembled, and stayed at a distance. |
Exodus 20:19 | and say unto Moses, `Speak thou with us, and we hear, and let not God speak with us, lest we die.` | And they said to Moses, To your words we will give ear, but let not the voice of God come to our ears, for fear death may come on us. | They said to Moses, "Speak with us yourself, and we will listen; but don't let God speak with us, lest we die." |
Exodus 20:20 | And Moses saith unto the people, `Fear not, for to try you hath God come, and in order that His fear may be before your faces that ye sin not.` | And Moses said to the people, Have no fear: for God has come to put you to the test, so that fearing him you may be kept from sin. | Moses said to the people, "Don't be afraid, for God has come to test you, and that his fear may be before you, that you won't sin." |
Exodus 20:21 | And the people stand afar off, and Moses hath drawn nigh unto the thick darkness where God [is]. | And the people kept their places far off, but Moses went near to the dark cloud where God was. | The people stayed at a distance, and Moses drew near to the thick darkness where God was. |
Exodus 20:22 | And Jehovah saith unto Moses, `Thus dost thou say unto the sons of Israel: Ye ye have seen that from the heavens I have spoken with you; | And the Lord said to Moses, Say to the children of Israel, You yourselves have seen that my voice has come to you from heaven | Yahweh said to Moses, "This is what you shall tell the children of Israel: 'You yourselves have seen that I have talked with you from heaven. |
Exodus 20:23 | ye do not make with Me gods of silver, even gods of gold ye do not make to yourselves. | Gods of silver and gods of gold you are not to make for yourselves. | You shall most certainly not make alongside of me gods of silver, or gods of gold for yourselves. |
Exodus 20:24 | `An altar of earth thou dost make for Me, and thou hast sacrificed on it thy burnt-offerings and thy peace-offerings, thy flock and thy herd; in every place where I cause My name to be remembered I come in unto thee, and have blessed thee. | Make for me an altar of earth, offering on it your burned offerings and your peace-offerings, your sheep and your oxen: in every place where I have put the memory of my name, I will come to you and give you my blessing. | You shall make an altar of earth for me, and shall sacrifice on it your burnt offerings and your peace-offerings, your sheep and your oxen. In every place where I record my name I will come to you and I will bless you. |
Exodus 20:25 | `And if an altar of stones thou dost make to Me, thou dost not build them of hewn work; when thy tool thou hast waved over it, then thou dost pollute it; | And if you make me an altar of stone do not make it of cut stones: for the touch of an instrument will make it unclean. | If you make me an altar of stone, you shall not build it of hewn stones; for if you lift up your tool on it, you have polluted it. |
Exodus 20:26 | neither dost thou go up by steps on Mine altar, that thy nakedness be not revealed upon it. | And do not go up by steps to my altar, for fear that your bodies may be seen uncovered. | Neither shall you go up by steps to my altar, that your nakedness may not be exposed to it.' |
