| Hebrews 5:1 | For every chief priest out of men taken in behalf of men is set in things [pertaining] to God, that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins, | Every high priest who is taken from among men is given his position to take care of the interests of men in those things which have to do with God, so that he may make offerings for sins. | For every high priest, being taken from among men, is appointed for men in things pertaining to God, that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins. |
| Hebrews 5:2 | able to be gentle to those ignorant and going astray, since himself also is compassed with infirmity; | He is able to have feeling for those who have no knowledge and for those who are wandering from the true way, because he himself is feeble; | The high priest can deal gently with those who are ignorant and going astray, because he himself is also surrounded with weakness. |
| Hebrews 5:3 | and because of this infirmity he ought, as for the people, so also for himself to offer for sins; | And being feeble, he has to make sin-offerings for himself as well as for the people. | Because of this, he must offer sacrifices for sins for the people, as well as for himself. |
