John 13:1 | And before the feast of the passover, Jesus knowing that his hour hath come, that he may remove out of this world unto the Father, having loved his own who [are] in the world to the end he loved them. | Now before the feast of the Passover, it was clear to Jesus that the time had come for him to go away from this world to the Father. Having once had love for those in the world who were his, his love for them went on to the end. | Now before the feast of the Passover, Jesus knowing that his time had come that he would depart out of this world to his Father, having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. |
John 13:2 | And supper being come, the devil already having put [it] into the heart of Judas of Simon, Iscariot, that he may deliver him up, | So while a meal was going on, the Evil One having now put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to be false to him, | After supper, the devil having already put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray him, |
John 13:3 | Jesus knowing that all things the Father hath given to him into [his] hands, and that from God he came forth, and unto God he goeth, | Jesus, being conscious that the Father had put everything into his hands, and that he came from God and was going to God, | Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he came forth from God, and was going to God, |
John 13:4 | doth rise from the supper, and doth lay down his garments, and having taken a towel, he girded himself; | Got up from table, put off his robe and took a cloth and put it round him. | arose from supper, and laid aside his outer garments. He took a towel, and wrapped a towel around his waist. |
John 13:5 | afterward he putteth water into the basin, and began to wash the feet of his disciples, and to wipe with the towel with which he was being girded. | Then he put water into a basin and was washing the feet of the disciples and drying them with the cloth which was round him. | Then he poured water into the basin, and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him. |
John 13:6 | He cometh, therefore, unto Simon Peter, and that one saith to him, `Sir, thou dost thou wash my feet?` | So he came to Simon Peter. Peter said, Lord, are my feet to be washed by you? | Then he came to Simon Peter. He said to him, "Lord, do you wash my feet?" |
John 13:7 | Jesus answered and said to him, `That which I do thou hast not known now, but thou shalt know after these things;` | And Jesus, answering, said to him, What I do is not clear to you now, but it will be clear to you in time to come. | Jesus answered him, "You don't know what I am doing now, but you will understand later." |
John 13:8 | Peter saith to him, `Thou mayest not wash my feet to the age.` Jesus answered him, `If I may not wash thee, thou hast no part with me;` | Peter said, I will never let my feet be washed by you, never. Jesus said in answer, If I do not make you clean you have no part with me. | Peter said to him, "You will never wash my feet!" Jesus answered him, "If I don't wash you, you have no part with me." |
John 13:9 | Simon Peter saith to him, `Sir, not my feet only, but also the hands and the head.` | Simon Peter said to him, Lord, not my feet only, but my hands and my head. | Simon Peter said to him, "Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head!" |
John 13:10 | Jesus saith to him, `He who hath been bathed hath no need save to wash his feet, but he is clean altogether; and ye are clean, but not all;` | Jesus said to him, He who is bathed has need only to have his feet washed and then he is clean all over: and you, my disciples, are clean, but not all of you. | Jesus said to him, "Someone who has bathed only needs to have their feet washed, but is completely clean. You are clean, but not all of you." |
John 13:11 | for he knew him who is delivering him up; because of this he said, `Ye are not all clean.` | (He had knowledge who was false to him; that is why he said, You are not all clean.) | For he knew him who would betray him, therefore he said, "You are not all clean." |
John 13:12 | When, therefore, he washed their feet, and took his garments, having reclined (at meat) again, he said to them, `Do ye know what I have done to you? | Then, after washing their feet and putting on his robe again, he took his seat and said to them, Do you see what I have done to you? | So when he had washed their feet, put his outer garment back on, and sat down again, he said to them, "Do you know what I have done to you? |
John 13:13 | ye call me, The Teacher and The Lord, and ye say well, for I am; | You give me the name of Master and Lord: and you are right; that is what I am. | You call me, 'Teacher' and 'Lord.' You say so correctly, for so I am. |
John 13:14 | if then I did wash your feet the Lord and the Teacher ye also ought to wash one another`s feet. | If then I, the Lord and the Master, have made your feet clean, it is right for you to make one another's feet clean. | If I then, the Lord and the Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. |
John 13:15 | `For an example I gave to you, that, according as I did to you, ye also may do; | I have given you an example, so that you may do what I have done to you. | For I have given you an example, that you also should do as I have done to you. |
John 13:16 | verily, verily, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his lord, nor an apostle greater than he who sent him; | Truly I say to you, A servant is not greater than his lord; and he who is sent is not greater than the one who sent him. | Most assuredly I tell you, a servant is not greater than his lord, neither one who is sent greater than he who sent him. |
John 13:17 | if these things ye have known, happy are ye, if ye may do them; | If these things are clear to you, happy are you if you do them. | If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them. |
John 13:18 | not concerning you all do I speak; I have known whom I chose for myself; but that the Writing may be fulfilled: He who is eating the bread with me, did lift up against me his heel. | I am not talking of you all: I have knowledge of my true disciples, but things are as they are, so that the Writings may come true, The foot of him who takes bread with me is lifted up against me. | I speak not of you all. I know whom I have chosen. But that the scripture may be fulfilled, 'He who eats bread with me has lifted up his heel against me.' |
John 13:19 | `From this time I tell you, before its coming to pass, that, when it may come to pass, ye may believe that I am [he]; | From this time forward, I give you knowledge of things before they come about, so that when they come about you may have belief that I am he. | From now on, I tell you before it happens, that when it happens, you may believe that I AM. |
John 13:20 | verily, verily, I say to you, he who is receiving whomsoever I may send, doth receive me; and he who is receiving me, doth receive Him who sent me.` | Truly I say to you, He who takes to his heart anyone whom I send, takes me to his heart; and he who so takes me, takes him who sent me. | Most assuredly I tell you, he who receives whoever I send, receives me; and he who receives me, receives him who sent me." |
John 13:21 | These things having said, Jesus was troubled in the spirit, and did testify, and said, `Verily, verily, I say to you, that one of you will deliver me up;` | When Jesus had said this he was troubled in spirit, and gave witness, saying, Truly I say to you, that one of you will be false to me. | When Jesus had said this, he was troubled in the spirit, and testified, "Most assuredly I tell you that one of you will betray me." |
John 13:22 | the disciples were looking, therefore, one at another, doubting concerning whom he speaketh. | Then the eyes of the disciples were turned on one another, in doubt as to whom he had in mind. | The disciples looked at one another, perplexed about whom he spoke. |
John 13:23 | And there was one of his disciples reclining (at meat) in the bosom of Jesus, whom Jesus was loving; | There was at table one of his disciples, the one dear to Jesus, resting his head on Jesus' breast. | One of his disciples, whom Jesus loved, was at the table, leaning against Jesus' breast. |
John 13:24 | Simon Peter, then, doth beckon to this one, to inquire who he may be concerning whom he speaketh, | Making a sign to him, Simon Peter said, Who is it he is talking about? | Simon Peter therefore beckoned to him, and said to him, "Tell us who it is of whom he speaks." |
John 13:25 | and that one having leant back on the breast of Jesus, respondeth to him, `Sir, who is it?` | He, then, resting his head on Jesus' breast, said to him, Lord, who is it? | He, leaning back, as he was, on Jesus' breast, asked him, "Lord, who is it?" |
John 13:26 | Jesus answereth, `That one it is to whom I, having dipped the morsel, shall give it;` and having dipped the morsel, he giveth [it] to Judas of Simon, Iscariot. | This was the answer Jesus gave: It is the one to whom I will give this bit of bread after I have put it in the vessel. Then he took the bit of bread, put it into the vessel, and gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot. | Jesus therefore answered, "It is he who I will give this morsel to when I have dipped it." So when he had dipped the morsel, he gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot. |
John 13:27 | And after the morsel, then the Adversary entered into that one, Jesus, therefore, saith to him, `What thou dost do quickly;` | And when Judas took the bread Satan went into him. Then Jesus said to him, Do quickly what you have to do. | After the morsel, then Satan entered into him. Jesus therefore said to him, "What you do, do quickly." |
John 13:28 | and none of those reclining at meat knew for what intent he said this to him, | Now it was not clear to anyone at table why he said this to him. | Now no man at the table knew why he said this to him. |
John 13:29 | for certain were thinking, since Judas had the bag, that Jesus saith to him, `Buy what we have need of for the feast;` or that he may give something to the poor; | Some were of the opinion that because Judas kept the money-bag Jesus said to him, Get the things we have need of for the feast; or, that he was to give something to the poor. | For some thought, because Judas had the money box, that Jesus said to him, "Buy what things we need for the feast," or that he should give something to the poor. |
John 13:30 | having received, therefore, the morsel, that one immediately went forth, and it was night. | So Judas, having taken the bit of bread, straight away went out: and it was night. | Therefore, having received that morsel, he went out immediately. It was night. |
John 13:31 | When, therefore, he went forth, Jesus saith, `Now was the Son of Man glorified, and God was glorified in him; | Then when he had gone out, Jesus said, Now is glory given to the Son of man, and God is given glory in him. | When he had gone out, Jesus said, "Now the Son of Man is glorified, and God is glorified in him. |
John 13:32 | if God was glorified in him, God also will glorify him in Himself; yea, immediately He will glorify him. | If God is given glory in him, God will give him glory in himself, and will give him glory even now. | If God is glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself, and he will glorify him immediately. |
John 13:33 | `Little children, yet a little am I with you; ye will seek me, and, according as I said to the Jews Whither I go away, ye are not able to come, to you also I do say [it] now. | My dear children, I am only to be with you a little longer. Then you will be looking for me: and as I said to the Jews, so now I say to you, Where I am going you may not come. | Little children, yet a little while I am with you. You will seek me, and as I said to the Jews, 'Where I am going, you can't come,' so now I tell you. |
John 13:34 | `A new commandment I give to you, that ye love one another; according as I did love you, that ye also love one another; | I give you a new law: Have love one for another; even as I have had love for you, so are you to have love one for another. | A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, just like I have loved you; that you also love one another. |
John 13:35 | in this shall all know that ye are my disciples, if ye may have love one to another.` | By this it will be clear to all men that you are my disciples, if you have love one for another. | By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another." |
John 13:36 | Simon Peter saith to him, `Sir, whither dost thou go away?` Jesus answered him, `Whither I go away, thou art not able now to follow me, but afterward thou shalt follow me.` | Simon Peter said to him, Lord, where are you going? Jesus said in answer, Where I am going you may not come with me now, but you will come later. | Simon Peter said to him, "Lord, where are you going?" Jesus answered, "Where I am going, you can't follow now, but you will follow afterwards." |
John 13:37 | Peter saith to him, `Sir, wherefore am I not able to follow thee now? my life for thee I will lay down;` | Peter said to him, Why may I not come with you even now? I will give up my life for you. | Peter said to him, "Lord, why can't I follow you even now? I will lay down my life for you." |
John 13:38 | Jesus answered him, `Thy life for me thou wilt lay down! verily, verily, I say to thee, a cock will not crow till thou mayest deny me thrice.` | Jesus said in answer, Will you give up your life for me? Truly I say to you, Before the cry of the cock you will have said three times that you are not my disciple. | Jesus answered him, "Will you lay down your life for me? Most assuredly I tell you, the rooster won't crow until you have denied me three times. |
