Matthew 5:1And having seen the multitudes, he went up to the mount, and he having sat down, his disciples came to him,And seeing great masses of people he went up into the mountain; and when he was seated his disciples came to him.Seeing the multitudes, he went up onto a mountain. When he had sat down, his disciples came to him.
Matthew 5:2and having opened his mouth, he was teaching them, saying:And with these words he gave them teaching, saying,He opened his mouth and taught them, saying,
Matthew 5:3`Happy the poor in spirit because theirs is the reign of the heavens.Happy are the poor in spirit: for the kingdom of heaven is theirs."Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven.
Matthew 5:4`Happy the mourning because they shall be comforted.Happy are those who are sad: for they will be comforted."Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.
Matthew 5:5`Happy the meek because they shall inherit the land.Happy are the gentle: for the earth will be their heritage."Blessed are the humble, for they shall inherit the earth.
Matthew 5:6`Happy those hungering and thirsting for righteousness because they shall be filled.Happy are those whose heart's desire is for righteousness: for they will have their desire."Blessed are those who hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they shall be filled.
Matthew 5:7`Happy the kind because they shall find kindness.Happy are those who have mercy: for they will be given mercy."Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.
Matthew 5:8`Happy the clean in heart because they shall see God.Happy are the clean in heart: for they will see God."Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.
Matthew 5:9`Happy the peacemakers because they shall be called Sons of God.Happy are the peacemakers: for they will be named sons of God."Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.
Matthew 5:10`Happy those persecuted for righteousness` sake because theirs is the reign of the heavens.Happy are those who are attacked on account of righteousness: for the kingdom of heaven will be theirs."Blessed are those who have been persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven.
Matthew 5:11`Happy are ye whenever they may reproach you, and may persecute, and may say any evil thing against you falsely for my sakeHappy are you when men give you a bad name, and are cruel to you, and say all evil things against you falsely, because of me."Blessed are you when people reproach you, persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely, for my sake.
Matthew 5:12rejoice ye and be glad, because your reward [is] great in the heavens, for thus did they persecute the prophets who were before you.Be glad and full of joy; for great is your reward in heaven: for so were the prophets attacked who were before you."Rejoice, and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven. For that is how they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
Matthew 5:13`Ye are the salt of the land, but if the salt may lose savour, in what shall it be salted? for nothing is it good henceforth, except to be cast without, and to be trodden down by men.You are the salt of the earth; but if its taste goes from the salt, how will you make it salt again? it is then good for nothing but to be put out and crushed under foot by men.You are the salt of the earth, but if the salt has lost its flavor, what will it be salted with? It is then good for nothing, but to be cast out and trodden under the feet of men.
Matthew 5:14`Ye are the light of the world, a city set upon a mount is not able to be hid;You are the light of the world. A town put on a hill may be seen by all.You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill can't be hid.
Matthew 5:15nor do they light a lamp, and put it under the measure, but on the lamp-stand, and it shineth to all those in the house; And a burning light is not put under a vessel, but on its table; so that its rays may be shining on all who are in the house.Neither do you light a lamp, and put it under a bushel basket, but on a stand; and it shines to all who are in the house.
Matthew 5:16so let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works, and may glorify your Father who [is] in the heavens.Even so let your light be shining before men, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.Even so, let your light shine before men; that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.
Matthew 5:17`Do not suppose that I came to throw down the law or the prophets I did not come to throw down, but to fulfill;Let there be no thought that I have come to put an end to the law or the prophets. I have not come for destruction, but to make complete.Don't think that I came to destroy the law or the prophets. I didn't come to destroy, but to fulfill.
Matthew 5:18for, verily I say to you, till that the heaven and the earth may pass away, one iota or one tittle may not pass away from the law, till that all may come to pass.Truly I say to you, Till heaven and earth come to an end, not the smallest letter or part of a letter will in any way be taken from the law, till all things are done. For most assuredly, I tell you, until heaven and earth pass away, not even one smallest letter or one tiny pen stroke shall in any way pass away from the law, until all things are accomplished.
Matthew 5:19`Whoever therefore may loose one of these commands the least and may teach men so, least he shall be called in the reign of the heavens, but whoever may do and may teach [them], he shall be called great in the reign of the heavens.Whoever then goes against the smallest of these laws, teaching men to do the same, will be named least in the kingdom of heaven; but he who keeps the laws, teaching others to keep them, will be named great in the kingdom of heaven.Whoever, therefore, shall break one of these least commandments, and teach others to do so, shall be called least in the Kingdom of Heaven; but whoever shall do and teach them shall be called great in the Kingdom of Heaven.
Matthew 5:20`For I say to you, that if your righteousness may not abound above that of the scribes and Pharisees, ye may not enter to the reign of the heavens. For I say to you, If your righteousness is not greater than the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never go into the kingdom of heaven. For I tell you, that unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, there is no way you shall enter into the Kingdom of Heaven.
Matthew 5:21`Ye heard that it was said to the ancients: Thou shalt not kill, and whoever may kill shall be in danger of the judgment; You have knowledge that it was said in old times, You may not put to death; and, Whoever puts to death will be in danger of being judged:"You have heard that it was said to them of old time, 'You shall not murder;' and 'Whoever shall murder shall be in danger of the judgment.'
Matthew 5:22but I I say to you, that every one who is angry at his brother without cause, shall be in danger of the judgment, and whoever may say to his brother, Empty fellow! shall be in danger of the sanhedrim, and whoever may say, Rebel! shall be in danger of the gehenna of the fire. But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be in danger of being judged; and he who says to his brother, Raca, will be in danger from the Sanhedrin; and whoever says, You foolish one, will be in danger of the hell of fire. But I tell you, that everyone who is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment; and whoever shall say to his brother, 'Raca,' shall be in danger of the council; and whoever shall say, 'You fool,' shall be in danger of the fire of Gehenna.
Matthew 5:23`If, therefore, thou mayest bring thy gift to the altar, and there mayest remember that thy brother hath anything against thee,If then you are making an offering at the altar and there it comes to your mind that your brother has something against you,If therefore you are offering your gift at the altar, and there remember that your brother has anything against you,
Matthew 5:24leave there thy gift before the altar, and go first be reconciled to thy brother, and then having come bring thy gift. While your offering is still before the altar, first go and make peace with your brother, then come and make your offering.leave your gift there before the altar, and go your way. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.
Matthew 5:25`Be agreeing with thy opponent quickly, while thou art in the way with him, that the opponent may not deliver thee to the judge, and the judge may deliver thee to the officer, and to prison thou mayest be cast,Come to an agreement quickly with him who has a cause against you at law, while you are with him on the way, for fear that he may give you up to the judge and the judge may give you to the police and you may be put into prison.Agree with your adversary quickly, while you are with him in the way; lest perhaps the prosecutor deliver you to the judge, and the judge deliver you to the officer, and you be cast into prison.
Matthew 5:26verily I say to thee, thou mayest not come forth thence till that thou mayest pay the last farthing.Truly I say to you, You will not come out from there till you have made payment of the very last farthing. Most assuredly I tell you, you shall by no means get out of there, until you have paid the last penny.
Matthew 5:27`Ye heard that it was said to the ancients: Thou shalt not commit adultery; You have knowledge that it was said, You may not have connection with another man's wife:"You have heard that it was said, 'You shall not commit adultery;'
Matthew 5:28but I I say to you, that every one who is looking on a woman to desire her, did already commit adultery with her in his heart. But I say to you that everyone whose eyes are turned on a woman with desire has had connection with her in his heart.but I tell you that everyone who gazes at a woman to lust after her has committed adultery with her already in his heart.
Matthew 5:29`But, if thy right eye doth cause thee to stumble, pluck it out and cast from thee, for it is good to thee that one of thy members may perish, and not thy whole body be cast to gehenna. And if your right eye is a cause of trouble to you, take it out and put it away from you; because it is better to undergo the loss of one part, than for all your body to go into hell.If your right eye causes you to stumble, pluck it out and cast it from you. For it is profitable for you that one of your members should perish, than for your whole body to be cast into Gehenna.
Matthew 5:30`And, if thy right hand doth cause thee to stumble, cut it off, and cast from thee, for it is good to thee that one of thy members may perish, and not thy whole body be cast to gehenna. And if your right hand is a cause of trouble to you, let it be cut off and put it away from you; because it is better to undergo the loss of one part, than for all your body to go into hell.If your right hand causes you to stumble, cut it off, and cast it from you: for it is profitable for you that one of your members should perish, and not your whole body be cast into Gehenna.
Matthew 5:31`And it was said, That whoever may put away his wife, let him give to her a writing of divorce;Again, it was said, Whoever puts away his wife has to give her a statement in writing for this purpose:"It was also said, 'Whoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorce,'
Matthew 5:32but I I say to you, that whoever may put away his wife, save for the matter of whoredom, doth make her to commit adultery; and whoever may marry her who hath been put away doth commit adultery. But I say to you that everyone who puts away his wife for any other cause but the loss of her virtue, makes her false to her husband; and whoever takes her as his wife after she is put away, is no true husband to her.but I tell you that whoever who puts away his wife, except for the cause of sexual immorality, makes her an adulteress; and whoever shall marry her when she is put away commits adultery.
Matthew 5:33`Again, ye heard that it was said to the ancients: Thou shalt not swear falsely, but thou shalt pay to the Lord thine oaths;Again, you have knowledge that it was said in old times, Do not take false oaths, but give effect to your oaths to the Lord:"Again you have heard that it was said to them of old time, 'You shall not make false vows, but shall perform to the Lord your vows,'
Matthew 5:34but I I say to you, not to swear at all; neither by the heaven, because it is the throne of God,But I say to you, Take no oaths at all: not by the heaven, because it is the seat of God;but I tell you, don't swear at all: neither by heaven, for it is the throne of God;
Matthew 5:35nor by the earth, because it is His footstool, nor by Jerusalem, because it is a city of a great king,Or by the earth, because it is the resting-place for his foot; or by Jerusalem, because it is the town of the great King.nor by the earth, for it is the footstool of his feet; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King.
Matthew 5:36nor by thy head mayest thou swear, because thou art not able one hair to make white or black; You may not take an oath by your head, because you are not able to make one hair white or black.Neither shall you swear by your head, for you can't make one hair white or black.
Matthew 5:37but let your word be, Yes, Yes, No, No, and that which is more than these is of the evil. But let your words be simply, Yes or No: and whatever is more than these is of the Evil One.But let your speech be, 'Yes, yes; No, no.' Whatever is more than these is of the evil one.
Matthew 5:38`Ye heard that it was said: Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth; You have knowledge that it was said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth:You have heard that it was said, 'An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.'
Matthew 5:39but I I say to you, not to resist the evil, but whoever shall slap thee on thy right cheek, turn to him also the other; But I say to you, Do not make use of force against an evil man; but to him who gives you a blow on the right side of your face let the left be turned. But I tell you, don't resist him who is evil; but whoever strikes you on your right cheek, turn to him the other also.
Matthew 5:40and whoever is willing to take thee to law, and thy coat to take suffer to him also the cloak. And if any man goes to law with you and takes away your coat, do not keep back your robe from him.If any man would go to law with you and take away your coat, let him have your cloak also.
Matthew 5:41`And whoever shall impress thee one mile, go with him two,And whoever makes you go one mile, go with him two.Whoever compels you to go one mile, go with him two.
Matthew 5:42to him who is asking of thee be giving, and him who is willing to borrow from thee thou mayest not turn away.Give to him who comes with a request, and keep not your property from him who would for a time make use of it.Give to him who asks you, and don't turn away him who desires to borrow from you.
Matthew 5:43`Ye heard that it was said: Thou shalt love thy neighbor, and shalt hate thine enemy; You have knowledge that it was said, Have love for your neighbour, and hate for him who is against you:"You have heard that it was said, 'You shall love your neighbor, and hate your enemy.'
Matthew 5:44but I I say to you, Love your enemies, bless those cursing you, do good to those hating you, and pray for those accusing you falsely, and persecuting you,But I say to you, Have love for those who are against you, and make prayer for those who are cruel to you;But I tell you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you,
Matthew 5:45that ye may be sons of your Father in the heavens, because His sun He doth cause to rise on evil and good, and He doth send rain on righteous and unrighteous. So that you may be the sons of your Father in heaven; for his sun gives light to the evil and to the good, and he sends rain on the upright man and on the sinner.that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the just and the unjust.
Matthew 5:46`For, if ye may love those loving you, what reward have ye? do not also the tax-gatherers the same? For if you have love for those who have love for you, what credit is it to you? do not the tax-farmers the same? For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Don't even the tax collectors do the same?
Matthew 5:47and if ye may salute your brethren only, what do ye abundant? do not also the tax-gatherers so?And if you say, Good day, to your brothers only, what do you do more than others? do not even the Gentiles the same?If you only greet your friends, what more do you do than others? Don't even the tax collectors do the same?
Matthew 5:48ye shall therefore be perfect, as your Father who [is] in the heavens is perfect.Be then complete in righteousness, even as your Father in heaven is complete. Therefore you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect.
