John 20:1 | And on the first of the sabbaths, Mary the Magdalene doth come early (there being yet darkness) to the tomb, and she seeth the stone having been taken away out of the tomb, | And on the first [day] of the week Mary of Magdala comes in early morn to the tomb, while it was still dark, and sees the stone taken away from the tomb. | Now on the first day of the week, very early, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene came to the place and saw that the stone had been taken away from it. |
John 20:2 | she runneth, therefore, and cometh unto Simon Peter, and unto the other disciple whom Jesus was loving, and saith to them, `They took away the Lord out of the tomb, and we have not known where they laid him.` | She runs therefore and comes to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple, to whom Jesus was attached, and says to them, They have taken away the Lord out of the tomb, and we know not where they have laid him. | Then she went running to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple who was loved by Jesus, and said to them, They have taken away the Lord out of the place of the dead and we have no knowledge where they have put him. |
John 20:3 | Peter, therefore, went forth, and the other disciple, and they were coming to the tomb, | Peter therefore went forth, and the other disciple, and came to the tomb. | So Peter and the other disciple went out to the place of the dead. |
John 20:4 | and the two were running together, and the other disciple did run forward more quickly than Peter, and came first to the tomb, | And the two ran together, and the other disciple ran forward faster than Peter, and came first to the tomb, | They went running together, and the other disciple got in front of Peter and came first to the hole in the rock; |
John 20:5 | and having stooped down, seeth the linen clothes lying, yet, indeed, he entered not. | and stooping down he sees the linen cloths lying; he did not however go in. | And looking in, he saw the linen bands on the earth; but he did not go in, |
John 20:6 | Simon Peter, therefore, cometh, following him, and he entered into the tomb, and beholdeth the linen clothes lying, | Simon Peter therefore comes, following him, and entered into the tomb, and sees the linen cloths lying, | Then Simon Peter came after him and went into the hole in the rock; and he saw the linen bands on the earth, |
John 20:7 | and the napkin that was upon his head, not lying with the linen clothes, but apart, having been folded up, in one place; | and the handkerchief which was upon his head, not lying with the linen cloths, but folded up in a distinct place by itself. | And the cloth, which had been round his head, not with the linen bands but rolled up in a place by itself. |
John 20:8 | then, therefore, entered also the other disciple who came first unto the tomb, and he saw, and did believe; | Then entered in therefore the other disciple also who came first to the tomb, and he saw and believed; | Then the other disciple who came there first went in; and he saw and belief came to him. |
John 20:9 | for not yet did they know the Writing, that it behoveth him out of the dead to rise again. | for they had not yet known the scripture, that he must rise from among [the] dead. | For at that time they had no knowledge that the Writings said that he would have to come again from the dead. |
John 20:10 | The disciples therefore went away again unto their own friends, | The disciples therefore went away again to their own home. | So then the disciples went away again to their houses. |
John 20:11 | and Mary was standing near the tomb, weeping without; as she was weeping, then, she stooped down to the tomb, and beholdeth two messengers in white, sitting, | But Mary stood at the tomb weeping without. As therefore she wept, she stooped down into the tomb, | But Mary was still there outside the hole in the rock, weeping; and while she was weeping and looking into the hole, |
John 20:12 | one at the head, and one at the feet, where the body of Jesus had been laid. | and beholds two angels sitting in white [garments], one at the head and one at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain. | She saw two angels in white seated where the body of Jesus had been, one at the head and the other at the feet. |
John 20:13 | And they say to her, `Woman, why dost thou weep?` she saith to them, `Because they took away my Lord, and I have not known where they laid him;` | And they say to her, Woman, why dost thou weep? She says to them, Because they have taken away my Lord, and I know not where they have laid him. | They said to her, Woman, why are you weeping? She said to them, Because they have taken away my Lord, and I have no knowledge where they have put him. |
John 20:14 | and these things having said, she turned backward, and seeth Jesus standing, and she had not known that it is Jesus. | Having said these things she turned backward and beholds Jesus standing [there], and knew not that it was Jesus. | And then looking round, she saw Jesus there, but had no idea that it was Jesus. |
John 20:15 | Jesus saith to her, `Woman, why dost thou weep? whom dost thou seek;` she, supposing that he is the gardener, saith to him, `Sir, if thou didst carry him away, tell me where thou didst lay him, and I will take him away;` | Jesus says to her, Woman, why dost thou weep? Whom seekest thou? She, supposing that it was the gardener, says to him, Sir, if thou hast borne him hence, tell me where thou hast laid him, and I will take him away. | Jesus said to her, Woman, why are you weeping? who are you looking for? She, taking him for the gardener, said to him, Sir, if you have taken him away from here, say where you have put him and I will take him away. |
John 20:16 | Jesus saith to her, `Mary!` having turned, she saith to him, `Rabbouni;` that is to say, `Teacher.` | Jesus says to her, Mary. She, turning round, says to him in Hebrew, Rabboni, which means Teacher. | Jesus said to her, Mary! Turning, she said to him in Hebrew, Rabboni! (which is to say, Master). |
John 20:17 | Jesus saith to her, `Be not touching me, for I have not yet ascended unto my Father; and be going on to my brethren, and say to them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father, and to my God, and to your God.` | Jesus says to her, Touch me not, for I have not yet ascended to my Father; but go to my brethren and say to them, I ascend to my Father and your Father, and [to] my God and your God. | Jesus said to her, Do not put your hand on me, for I have not gone up to the Father: but go to my brothers and say to them, I go up to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God. |
John 20:18 | Mary the Magdalene cometh, telling to the disciples that she hath seen the Lord, and [that] these things he said to her. | Mary of Magdala comes bringing word to the disciples that she had seen the Lord, and [that] he had said these things to her. | Mary Magdalene went with the news to the disciples, and said she had seen the Lord and that he had said these things to her. |
John 20:19 | It being, therefore, evening, on that day, the first of the sabbaths, and the doors having been shut where the disciples were assembled, through fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the midst, and saith to them, `Peace to you;` | When therefore it was evening on that day, which was the first [day] of the week, and the doors shut where the disciples were, through fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the midst, and says to them, Peace [be] to you. | At evening on that day, the first day of the week, when, for fear of the Jews, the doors were shut where the disciples were, Jesus came among them and said to them, May peace be with you! |
John 20:20 | and this having said, he shewed them his hands and side; the disciples, therefore, rejoiced, having seen the Lord. | And having said this, he shewed to them his hands and his side. The disciples rejoiced therefore, having seen the Lord. | And when he had said this, he let them see his hands and his side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. |
John 20:21 | Jesus, therefore, said to them again, `Peace to you; according as the Father hath sent me, I also send you;` | [Jesus] said therefore again to them, Peace [be] to you: as the Father sent me forth, I also send you. | And Jesus said to them again, May peace be with you! As the Father sent me, even so I now send you. |
John 20:22 | and this having said, he breathed on [them], and saith to them, `Receive the Holy Spirit; | And having said this, he breathed into [them], and says to them, Receive [the] Holy Spirit: | And when he had said this, breathing on them, he said to them, Let the Holy Spirit come on you: |
John 20:23 | if of any ye may loose the sins, they are loosed to them; if of any ye may retain, they have been retained.` | whose soever sins ye remit, they are remitted to them; whose soever [sins] ye retain, they are retained. | Any to whom you give forgiveness, will be made free from their sins; and any from whom you keep back forgiveness, will still be in their sins. |
John 20:24 | And Thomas, one of the twelve, who is called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came; | But Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came. | Now Thomas, one of the twelve, named Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came. |
John 20:25 | the other disciples, therefore, said to him, `We have seen the Lord;` and he said to them, `If I may not see in his hands the mark of the nails, and may put my finger to the mark of the nails, and may put my hand to his side, I will not believe.` | The other disciples therefore said to him, We have seen the Lord. But he said to them, Unless I see in his hands the mark of the nails, and put my finger into the mark of the nails, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe. | So the other disciples said to him, We have seen the Lord. But he said to them, If I do not see in his hands the print of the nails and put my finger into the print of the nails, and if I do not put my hand into his side, I will never have belief. |
John 20:26 | And after eight days, again were his disciples within, and Thomas with them; Jesus cometh, the doors having been shut, and he stood in the midst, and said, `Peace to you!` | And eight days after, his disciples were again within, and Thomas with them. Jesus comes, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst and said, Peace [be] to you. | And after eight days, his disciples were again in the house and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were shut, Jesus came, and taking his place in the middle of them, he said, May peace be with you! |
John 20:27 | then he saith to Thomas, `Bring thy finger hither, and see my hands, and bring thy hand, and put [it] to my side, and become not unbelieving, but believing.` | Then he says to Thomas, Bring thy finger here and see my hands; and bring thy hand and put it into my side; and be not unbelieving, but believing. | Then he said to Thomas, Put out your finger, and see my hands; and put your hand here into my side: and be no longer in doubt but have belief. |
John 20:28 | And Thomas answered and said to him, `My Lord and my God;` | Thomas answered and said to him, My Lord and my God. | And Thomas said in answer, My Lord and my God! |
John 20:29 | Jesus saith to him, `Because thou hast seen me, Thomas, thou hast believed; happy those not having seen, and having believed.` | Jesus says to him, Because thou hast seen me thou hast believed: blessed they who have not seen and have believed. | Jesus said to him, Because you have seen me you have belief: a blessing will be on those who have belief though they have not seen me! |
John 20:30 | Many indeed, therefore, other signs also did Jesus before his disciples, that are not written in this book; | Many other signs therefore also Jesus did before his disciples, which are not written in this book; | A number of other signs Jesus did before his disciples which are not recorded in this book: |
John 20:31 | and these have been written that ye may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing ye may have life in his name.` | but these are written that ye may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing ye might have life in his name. | But these are recorded, so that you may have faith that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and so that, having this faith you may have life in his name. |
