2nd-Peter 3:1 | This, now, beloved, a second letter to you I write, in both which I stir up your pure mind in reminding [you], | This, a second letter, beloved, I already write to you, in [both] which I stir up, in the way of putting you in remembrance, your pure mind, | This letter which I am now writing to you, dear friends, is my second letter. In both my letters I seek to revive in your honest minds the memory of certain things, |
2nd-Peter 3:2 | to be mindful of the sayings said before by the holy prophets, and of the command of us the apostles of the Lord and Saviour, | to be mindful of the words spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of the Lord and Saviour by your apostles; | so that you may recall the words spoken long ago by the holy Prophets, and the commandments of our Lord and Saviour given you through your Apostles. |
2nd-Peter 3:3 | this first knowing, that there shall come in the latter end of the days scoffers, according to their own desires going on, | knowing this first, that there shall come at [the] close of the days mockers with mocking, walking according to their own lusts, | But, above all, remember that, in the last days, men will come who make a mock at everything men governed only by their own passions, |
2nd-Peter 3:4 | and saying, `Where is the promise of his presence? for since the fathers did fall asleep, all things so remain from the beginning of the creation;` | and saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for from the time the fathers fell asleep all things remain thus from [the] beginning of [the] creation. | and, asking, "What has become of His promised Return? For from the time our forefathers fell asleep all things continue as they have been ever since the creation of the world." |
2nd-Peter 3:5 | for this is unobserved by them willingly, that the heavens were of old, and the earth out of water and through water standing together by the word of God, | For this is hidden from them through their own wilfulness, that heavens were of old, and an earth, having its subsistence out of water and in water, by the word of God, | For they are wilfully blind to the fact that there were heavens which existed of old, and an earth, the latter arising out of water and extending continuously through water, by the command of God; |
2nd-Peter 3:6 | through which the then world, by water having been deluged, was destroyed; | through which [waters] the then world, deluged with water, perished. | and that, by means of these, the then existing race of men was overwhelmed with water and perished. |
2nd-Peter 3:7 | and the present heavens and the earth, by the same word are treasured, for fire being kept to a day of judgment and destruction of the impious men. | But the present heavens and the earth by his word are laid up in store, kept for fire unto a day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men. | But the present heavens and the present earth are, by the command of the same God, kept stored up, reserved for fire in preparation for a day of judgement and of destruction for the ungodly. |
2nd-Peter 3:8 | And this one thing let not be unobserved by you, beloved, that one day with the Lord [is] as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day; | But let not this one thing be hidden from you, beloved, that one day with [the] Lord [is] as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. | But there is one thing, dear friends, which you must not forget. With the Lord one day resembles a thousand years and a thousand years resemble one day. |
2nd-Peter 3:9 | the Lord is not slow in regard to the promise, as certain count slowness, but is long-suffering to us, not counselling any to be lost but all to pass on to reformation, | [The] Lord does not delay his promise, as some account of delay, but is longsuffering towards you, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. | The Lord is not slow in fulfilling His promise, in the sense in which some men speak of slowness. But He bears patiently with you, His desire being that no one should perish but that all should come to repentance. |
2nd-Peter 3:10 | and it will come the day of the Lord as a thief in the night, in which the heavens with a rushing noise will pass away, and the elements with burning heat be dissolved, and earth and the works in it shall be burnt up. | But the day of [the] Lord will come as a thief, in which the heavens will pass away with a rushing noise, and [the] elements, burning with heat, shall be dissolved, and [the] earth and the works in it shall be burnt up. | The day of the Lord will come like a thief it will be a day on which the heavens will pass away with a rushing noise, the elements be destroyed in the fierce heat, and the earth and all the works of man be utterly burnt up. |
2nd-Peter 3:11 | All these, then, being dissolved, what kind of persons doth it behove you to be in holy behaviours and pious acts? | All these things then being to be dissolved, what ought ye to be in holy conversation and godliness, | Since all these things are thus pre-destined to dissolution, what sort of men ought you to be found to be in all holy living and godly conduct, |
2nd-Peter 3:12 | waiting for and hasting to the presence of the day of God, by which the heavens, being on fire, shall be dissolved, and the elements with burning heat shall melt; | waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, by reason of which [the] heavens, being on fire, shall be dissolved, and [the] elements, burning with heat, shall melt? | eagerly looking forward to the coming of the day of God, by reason of which the heavens, all ablaze, will be destroyed, and the elements will melt in the fierce heat? |
2nd-Peter 3:13 | and for new heavens and a new earth according to His promise we do wait, in which righteousness doth dwell; | But, according to his promise, we wait for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwells righteousness. | But in accordance with His promise we are expecting new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness will dwell. |
2nd-Peter 3:14 | wherefore, beloved, these things waiting for, be diligent, spotless and unblameable, by Him to be found in peace, | Wherefore, beloved, as ye wait for these things, be diligent to be found of him in peace, without spot and blameless; | Therefore, dear friends, since you have these expectations, earnestly seek to be found in His presence, free from blemish or reproach, in peace. |
2nd-Peter 3:15 | and the long-suffering of our Lord count ye salvation, according as also our beloved brother Paul according to the wisdom given to him did write to you, | and account the longsuffering of our Lord [to be] salvation; according as our beloved brother Paul also has written to you according to the wisdom given to him, | And always regard the patient forbearance of our Lord as salvation, as our dear brother Paul also has written to you in virtue of the wisdom granted to him. |
2nd-Peter 3:16 | as also in all the epistles, speaking in them concerning these things, among which things are certain hard to be understood, which the untaught and unstable do wrest, as also the other Writings, unto their own destruction. | as also in all [his] epistles, speaking in them of these things; among which some things are hard to be understood, which the untaught and ill-established wrest, as also the other scriptures, to their own destruction. | That is what he says in all his letters, when speaking in them of these things. In those letters there are some statements hard to understand, which ill-taught and unprincipled people pervert, just as they do the rest of the Scriptures, to their own ruin. |
2nd-Peter 3:17 | Ye, then, beloved, knowing before, take heed, lest, together with the error of the impious being led away, ye may fall from your own stedfastness, | *Ye* therefore, beloved, knowing [these] things before, take care lest, being led away along with the error of the wicked, ye should fall from your own stedfastness: | You, therefore, dear friends, having been warned beforehand, must continually be on your guard so as not to be led astray by the false teaching of immoral men nor fall from your own stedfastness. |
2nd-Peter 3:18 | and increase ye in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ; to him [is] the glory both now, and to the day of the age! Amen. | but grow in grace, and in [the] knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him [be] glory both now and to [the] day of eternity. Amen. | But be always growing in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To Him be all glory, both now and to the day of Eternity! |
