John 16:1 | `These things I have spoken to you, that ye may not be stumbled, | These things I have spoken unto you that ye may not be offended. | "These things I have spoken to you in order to clear stumbling-blocks out of your path. |
John 16:2 | out of the synagogues they will put you; but an hour doth come, that every one who hath killed you, may think to offer service unto God; | They shall put you out of the synagogues; but the hour is coming that every one who kills you will think to render service to God; | You will be excluded from the synagogues; nay more, the time is coming when any one who has murdered one of you will suppose he is offering service to God. |
John 16:3 | and these things they will do to you, because they did not know the Father, nor me. | and these things they will do because they have not known the Father nor me. | And they will do these things because they have failed to recognize the Father and to discover who I am. |
John 16:4 | `But these things I have spoken to you, that when the hour may come, ye may remember them, that I said [them] to you, and these things to you from the beginning I did not say, because I was with you; | But I have spoken these things to you, that when their hour shall have come, ye may remember them, that I have said [them] unto you. But I did not say these things unto you from [the] beginning, because I was with you. | But I have spoken these things to you in order that when the time for their accomplishment comes you may remember them, and may recollect that I told you. I did not, however, tell you all this at first, because I was still with you. |
John 16:5 | and now I go away to Him who sent me, and none of you doth ask me, Whither dost thou go? | But now I go to him that has sent me, and none of you demands of me, Where goest thou? | But now I an returning to Him who sent me; and not one of you asks me where I am going. |
John 16:6 | but because these things I have said to you, the sorrow hath filled your heart. | But because I have spoken these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. | But grief has filled your hearts because I have said all this to you. |
John 16:7 | `But I tell you the truth; it is better for you that I go away, for if I may not go away, the Comforter will not come unto you, and if I go on, I will send Him unto you; | But I say the truth to you, It is profitable for you that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Comforter will not come to you; but if I go I will send him to you. | "Yet it is the truth that I am telling you it is to your advantage that I go away. For unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you. |
John 16:8 | and having come, He will convict the world concerning sin, and concerning righteousness, and concerning judgment; | And having come, he will bring demonstration to the world, of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: | And He, when He comes, will convict the world in respect of sin, of righteousness, and of judgement; |
John 16:9 | concerning sin indeed, because they do not believe in me; | of sin, because they do not believe on me; | of sin, because they do not believe in me; |
John 16:10 | and concerning righteousness, because unto my Father I go away, and no more do ye behold me; | of righteousness, because I go away to [my] Father, and ye behold me no longer; | of righteousness, because I am going to the Father, and you will no longer see me; |
John 16:11 | and concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world hath been judged. | of judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged. | of judgement, because the Prince of this world is under sentence. |
John 16:12 | `I have yet many things to say to you, but ye are not able to bear [them] now; | I have yet many things to say to you, but ye cannot bear them now. | "I have much more to say to you, but you are unable at present to bear the burden of it. |
John 16:13 | and when He may come the Spirit of truth He will guide you to all the truth, for He will not speak from Himself, but as many things as He will hear He will speak, and the coming things He will tell you; | But when *he* is come, the Spirit of truth, he shall guide you into all the truth: for he shall not speak from himself; but whatsoever he shall hear he shall speak; and he will announce to you what is coming. | But when He has come the Spirit of Truth He will guide you into all the truth. For He will not speak as Himself originating what He says, but all that He hears He will speak, and He will make known the future to you. |
John 16:14 | He will glorify me, because of mine He will take, and will tell to you. | He shall glorify me, for he shall receive of mine and shall announce [it] to you. | He will glorify me, because He will take of what is mine and will make it known to you. |
John 16:15 | `All things, as many as the Father hath, are mine; because of this I said, That of mine He will take, and will tell to you; | All things that the Father has are mine; on account of this I have said that he receives of mine and shall announce [it] to you. | Everything that the Father has is mine; that is why I said that the Spirit of Truth takes of what is mine and will make it known to you. |
John 16:16 | a little while, and ye do not behold me, and again a little while, and ye shall see me, because I go away unto the Father.` | A little while and ye do not behold me; and again a little while and ye shall see me, [because I go away to the Father]. | "A little while and you see me no more, and again a little while and you shall see me." |
John 16:17 | Therefore said [some] of his disciples one to another, `What is this that he saith to us, A little while, and ye do not behold me, and again a little while, and ye shall see me, and, Because I go away unto the Father?` | [Some] of his disciples therefore said to one another, What is this he says to us, A little while and ye do not behold me; and again a little while and ye shall see me, and, Because I go away to the Father? | Some of His disciples therefore said to one another, "What does this mean which He is telling us, `A little while and you do not see me, and again a little while and you shall see me,' and `Because I am going to the Father'?" |
John 16:18 | they said then, `What is this he saith the little while? we have not known what he saith.` | They said therefore, What is this which he says [of] the little while? We do not know [of] what he speaks. | So they asked one another repeatedly, "What can that `little while' mean which He speaks of? We do not understand His words." |
John 16:19 | Jesus, therefore, knew that they were wishing to ask him, and he said to them, `Concerning this do ye seek one with another, because I said, A little while, and you do not behold me, and again a little while, and ye shall see me? | Jesus knew therefore that they desired to demand of him, and said to them, Do ye inquire of this among yourselves that I said, A little while and ye do not behold me; and again a little while and ye shall see me? | Jesus perceived that they wanted to ask Him, and He said, "Is this what you are questioning one another about my saying, `A little while and you do not see me, and again a little while and you shall see me'? |
John 16:20 | verily, verily, I say to you, that ye shall weep and lament, and the world will rejoice; and ye shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow joy will become. | Verily, verily, I say to you, that ye shall weep and lament, ye, but the world shall rejoice; and ye will be grieved, but your grief shall be turned to joy. | In most solemn truth I tell you that you will weep aloud and lament, but the world will be glad. You will mourn, but your grief will be turned into gladness. |
John 16:21 | `The woman, when she may bear, hath sorrow, because her hour did come, and when she may bear the child, no more doth she remember the anguish, because of the joy that a man was born to the world. | A woman, when she gives birth to a child, has grief because her hour has come; but when the child is born, she no longer remembers the trouble, on account of the joy that a man has been born into the world. | A woman, when she is in labour, has sorrow, because her time has come. But when she has given birth to the babe, she no longer remembers the pain, because of her joy at a child being born into the world. |
John 16:22 | `And ye, therefore, now, indeed, have sorrow; and again I will see you, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no one doth take from you, | And ye now therefore have grief; but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no one takes from you. | So you also now have sorrow; but I shall see you again, and your hearts will be glad, and your gladness no one will take away from you. |
John 16:23 | and in that day ye will question me nothing; verily, verily, I say to you, as many things as ye may ask of the Father in my name, He will give you; | And in that day ye shall demand nothing of me: verily, verily, I say to you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give you. | You will put no questions to me then. "In most solemn truth I tell you that whatever you ask the Father for in my name He will give you. |
John 16:24 | till now ye did ask nothing in my name; ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full. | Hitherto ye have asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full. | As yet you have not asked for anything in my name: ask, and you shall receive, that your hearts may be filled with gladness. |
John 16:25 | `These things in similitudes I have spoken to you, but there cometh an hour when no more in similitudes will I speak to you, but freely of the Father, will tell you. | These things I have spoken to you in allegories; the hour is coming that I will no longer speak to you in allegories, but will declare to you openly concerning the Father. | "All this I have spoken to you in veiled language. The time is coming when I shall no longer speak to you in veiled language, but will tell you about the Father in plain words. |
John 16:26 | `In that day, in my name ye will make request, and I do not say to you that I will ask the Father for you, | In that day ye shall ask in my name; and I say not to you that I will demand of the Father for you, | At that time you will make your requests in my name; and I do not promise to ask the Father on your behalf, |
John 16:27 | for the Father himself doth love you, because me ye have loved, and ye have believed that I from God came forth; | for the Father himself has affection for you, because ye have had affection for me, and have believed that I came out from God. | for the Father Himself holds you dear, because you have held me dear and have believed that I came from the Father's presence. |
John 16:28 | I came forth from the Father, and have come to the world; again I leave the world, and go on unto the Father.` | I came out from the Father and have come into the world; again, I leave the world and go to the Father. | I came from the Father and have come into the world. Again I am leaving the world and am going to the Father." |
John 16:29 | His disciples say to him, `Lo, now freely thou dost speak, and no similitude speakest thou; | His disciples say to him, Lo, now thou speakest openly and utterest no allegory. | "Ah, now you are using plain language," said His disciples, "and are uttering no figure of speech! |
John 16:30 | now we have known that thou hast known all things, and hast no need that any one do question thee; in this we believe that from God thou didst come forth.` | Now we know that thou knowest all things, and hast not need that any one should demand of thee. By this we believe that thou art come from God. | Now we know that you have all knowledge, and do not need to be pressed with questions. Through this we believe that you came from God." |
John 16:31 | Jesus answered them, `Now do ye believe? lo, there doth come an hour, | Jesus answered them, Do ye now believe? | "Do you at last believe?" replied Jesus. |
John 16:32 | and now it hath come, that ye may be scattered, each to his own things, and me ye may leave alone, and I am not alone, because the Father is with me; | Behold, [the] hour is coming, and has come, that ye shall be scattered, each to his own, and shall leave me alone; and [yet] I am not alone, for the Father is with me. | "Remember that the time is coming, nay, has already come, for you all to be dispersed each to his own home and to leave me alone. And yet I am not alone, for the Father is with me. |
John 16:33 | these things I have spoken to you, that in me ye may have peace, in the world ye shall have tribulation, but take courage I have overcome the world.` | These things have I spoken to you that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye have tribulation; but be of good courage: I have overcome the world. | "I have spoken all this to you in order that in me you may have peace. In the world you have affliction. But keep up your courage: *I* have won the victory over the world." |
