Matthew 23:3all, then, as much as they may say to you to observe, observe and do, but according to their works do not, for they say, and do not;all things therefore, whatever they may tell you, do and keep. But do not after their works, for they say and do not,Therefore do and observe everything that they command you; but do not imitate their lives, for though they tell others what to do, they do not do it themselves.
Matthew 23:4for they bind together burdens heavy and grievous to be borne, and lay upon the shoulders of men, but with their finger they will not move them.but bind burdens heavy and hard to bear, and lay them on the shoulders of men, but will not move them with their finger.Heavy and cumbrous burdens they bind together and load men's shoulders with them, while as for themselves, not with one finger do they choose to lift them.
Matthew 23:5`And all their works they do to be seen by men, and they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the fringes of their garments,And all their works they do to be seen of men: for they make broad their phylacteries and enlarge the borders [of their garments],And everything they do they do with a view to being observed by men; for they widen their phylacteries and make the tassels large,
Matthew 23:6they love also the chief couches in the supper, and the chief seats in the synagogues,and love the chief place in feasts and the first seats in the synagogues,and love the best seats at a dinner party or in the synagogues,
Matthew 23:7and the salutations in the market-places, and to be called by men, Rabbi, Rabbi.and salutations in the market-places, and to be called of men, Rabbi, Rabbi.and like to be bowed to in places of public resort, and to be addressed by men as `Rabbi.'
Matthew 23:8`And ye ye may not be called Rabbi, for one is your director the Christ, and all ye are brethren;But *ye*, be not ye called Rabbi; for one is your instructor, and all *ye* are brethren."As for you, do not accept the title of `Rabbi,' for one alone is your Teacher, and you are all brothers.
Matthew 23:9and ye may not call [any] your father on the earth, for one is your Father, who is in the heavens,And call not [any one] your father upon the earth; for one is your Father, he who is in the heavens.And call no one on earth your Father, for One alone is your Father the Heavenly Father.
Matthew 23:10nor may ye be called directors, for one is your director the Christ.Neither be called instructors, for one is your instructor, the Christ.And do not accept the name of `leader,' for your Leader is one alone the Christ.
Matthew 23:11And the greater of you shall be your ministrant,But the greatest of you shall be your servant.He who is the greatest among you shall be your servant;
Matthew 23:12and whoever shall exalt himself shall be humbled, and whoever shall humble himself shall be exalted.And whoever shall exalt himself shall be humbled, and whoever shall humble himself shall be exalted.and one who exalts himself shall be abased, while one who abases himself shall be exalted.
Matthew 23:13`Wo to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye shut up the reign of the heavens before men, for ye do not go in, nor those going in do ye suffer to enter.But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, for ye shut up the kingdom of the heavens before men; for *ye* do not enter, nor do ye suffer those that are entering to go in."But alas for you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, for you lock the door of the Kingdom of the Heavens against men; you yourselves do not enter, nor do you allow those to enter who are seeking to do so.
Matthew 23:14`Wo to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye eat up the houses of the widows, and for a pretence make long prayers, because of this ye shall receive more abundant judgment.[]
Matthew 23:15`Wo to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye go round the sea and the dry land to make one proselyte, and whenever it may happen ye make him a son of gehenna twofold more than yourselves.Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, for ye compass the sea and the dry [land] to make one proselyte, and when he is become [such], ye make him twofold more [the] son of hell than yourselves."Alas for you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, for you scour sea and land in order to win one convert and when he is gained, you make him twice as much a son of Gehenna as yourselves.
Matthew 23:16`Wo to you, blind guides, who are saying, Whoever may swear by the sanctuary, it is nothing, but whoever may swear by the gold of the sanctuary is debtor!Woe to you, blind guides, who say, Whosoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gold of the temple, he is a debtor."Alas for you, you blind guides, who say, "`Whoever swears by the Sanctuary it is nothing; but whoever swears by the gold of the Sanctuary, is bound by the oath.'
Matthew 23:17Fools and blind! for which [is] greater, the gold, or the sanctuary that is sanctifying the gold?Fools and blind, for which is greater, the gold, or the temple which sanctifies the gold?"Blind fools! Why, which is greater? the gold, or the Sanctuary which has made the gold holy?
Matthew 23:18`And, whoever may swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whoever may swear by the gift that is upon it is debtor!And, Whosoever shall swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gift that is upon it is a debtor.And you say, "`Whoever swears by the altar, it is nothing; but whoever swears by the offering lying on it is bound by the oath.'
Matthew 23:19Fools and blind! for which [is] greater, the gift, or the altar that is sanctifying the gift?[Fools and] blind ones, for which is greater, the gift, or the altar which sanctifies the gift?"You are blind! Why, which is greater? the offering, or the altar which makes the offering holy?
Matthew 23:20`He therefore who did swear by the altar, doth swear by it, and by all things on it;He therefore that swears by the altar swears by it and by all things that are upon it.He who swears by the altar swears both by it and by everything on it;
Matthew 23:21and he who did swear by the sanctuary, doth swear by it, and by Him who is dwelling in it;And he that swears by the temple swears by it and by him that dwells in it.he who swears by the Sanctuary swears both by it and by Him who dwells in it;
Matthew 23:22and he who did swear by the heaven, doth swear by the throne of God, and by Him who is sitting upon it.And he that swears by heaven swears by the throne of God and by him that sits upon it.and he who swears by Heaven swears both by the throne of God and by Him who sits upon it.
Matthew 23:23`Wo to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye give tithe of the mint, and the dill, and the cumin, and did neglect the weightier things of the Law the judgment, and the kindness, and the faith; these it behoved [you] to do, and those not to neglect.Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, for ye pay tithes of mint and anise and cummin, and ye have left aside the weightier matters of the law, judgment and mercy and faith: these ye ought to have done and not have left those aside."Alas for you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, for you pay the tithe on mint, dill, and cumin, while you have neglected the weightier requirements of the Law just judgement, mercy, and faithful dealing. These things you ought to have done, and yet you ought not to have left the others undone.

Matthew 23:25`Wo to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye make clean the outside of the cup and the plate, and within they are full of rapine and incontinence.Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the dish, but within they are full of rapine and intemperance."Alas for you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, for you wash clean the outside of the cup or dish, while within they are full of greed and self-indulgence.
Matthew 23:26`Blind Pharisee! cleanse first the inside of the cup and the plate, that the outside of them also may become clean.Blind Pharisee, make clean first the inside of the cup and of the dish, that their outside also may become clean.Blind Pharisee, first wash clean the inside of the cup or dish, and then the outside will be clean also.
Matthew 23:27`Wo to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye are like to whitewashed sepulchres, which outwardly indeed do appear beautiful, and within are full of bones of dead men, and of all uncleanness;Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, for ye are like whited sepulchres, which appear beautiful outwardly, but within are full of dead men's bones and all uncleanness."Alas for you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, for you are just like whitewashed sepulchres, the outside of which pleases the eye, though inside they are full of dead men's bones and of all that is unclean.
Matthew 23:28so also ye outwardly indeed do appear to men righteous, and within ye are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.Thus also *ye*, outwardly ye appear righteous to men, but within are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.The same is true of you: outwardly you seem to the human eye to be good and honest men, but, within, you are full of insincerity and disregard of God's Law.
Matthew 23:29`Wo to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye build the sepulchres of the prophets, and adorn the tombs of the righteous,Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, for ye build the sepulchres of the prophets and adorn the tombs of the just,"Alas for you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, for you repair the sepulchres of the Prophets and keep in order the tombs of the righteous,

Matthew 23:31So that ye testify to yourselves, that ye are sons of them who did murder the prophets;So that ye bear witness of yourselves that ye are sons of those who slew the prophets:"So that you bear witness against yourselves that you are descendants of those who murdered the Prophets.

Matthew 23:34`Because of this, lo, I send to you prophets, and wise men, and scribes, and of them ye will kill and crucify, and of them ye will scourge in your synagogues, and will pursue from city to city;Therefore, behold, *I* send unto you prophets, and wise men, and scribes; and [some] of them ye will kill and crucify, and [some] of them ye will scourge in your synagogues, and will persecute from city to city;"For this reason I am sending to you Prophets and wise men and Scribes. Some of them you will put to death nay, crucify; some of them you will flog in your synagogues and chase from town to town;
