John 11:1

And there was a certain one ailing, Lazarus, from Bethany, of the village of Mary and Martha her sister

Now there was a certain man sick, named Lazarus, of Bethania, of the town of Mary and Martha her sister.

Now a certain man named Lazarus was ill; he was of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha.

John 11:2

and it was Mary who did anoint the Lord with ointment, and did wipe his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was ailing

(And Mary was she that anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair: whose brother Lazarus was sick.)

(The Mary whose brother Lazarus was ill, was the Mary who put perfumed oil on the Lord and made his feet dry with her hair.)

John 11:3

therefore sent the sisters unto him, saying, `Sir, lo, he whom thou dost love is ailing;`

His sisters therefore sent to him, saying: Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick.

So the sisters sent to him, saying, Lord, your dear friend is ill.

John 11:4

and Jesus having heard, said, `This ailment is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified through it.`

And Jesus hearing it, said to them: This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God: that the Son of God may be glorified by it.

When this came to his ears, Jesus said, The end of this disease is not death, but the glory of God, so that the Son of God may have glory because of it.

John 11:5

And Jesus was loving Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus,

Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister Mary, and Lazarus.

Now Jesus had love in his heart for Martha and her sister and Lazarus.

John 11:6

when, therefore, he heard that he is ailing, then indeed he remained in the place in which he was two days,

When he had heard therefore that he was sick, he still remained in the same place two days.

So when the news came to him that Lazarus was ill, he did not go from the place where he was for two days.

John 11:7

then after this, he saith to the disciples, `We may go to Judea again;`

Then after that, he said to his disciples: Let us go into Judea again.

Then after that time he said to his disciples, Let us go into Judaea again.

John 11:8

the disciples say to him, `Rabbi, now were the Jews seeking to stone thee, and again thou dost go thither!`

The disciples say to him: Rabbi, the Jews but now sought to stone thee: and goest thou thither again?

The disciples said to him, Master, the Jews were attempting only the other day to have you stoned, and are you going back there again?

John 11:9

Jesus answered, `Are there not twelve hours in the day? if any one may walk in the day, he doth not stumble, because the light of this world he doth see;

Jesus answered: Are there not twelve hours of the day? If a man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world:

Then Jesus said in answer, Are there not twelve hours in the day? A man may go about in the day without falling, because he sees the light of this world.

John 11:10

and if any one may walk in the night, he stumbleth, because the light is not in him.`

But if he walk in the night, he stumbleth, because the light is not in him.

But if a man goes about in the night, he may have a fall because the light is not in him.

John 11:11

These things he said, and after this he saith to them, `Lazarus our friend hath fallen asleep, but I go on that I may awake him;`

These things he said; and after that he said to them: Lazarus our friend sleepeth; but I go that I may awake him out of sleep.

These things said he: and after that he said to them, Lazarus our friend is at rest; but I go so that I may make him come out of his sleep.

John 11:12

therefore said his disciples, `Sir, if he hath fallen asleep, he will be saved;`

His disciples therefore said: Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well.

Then his disciples said to him, Lord, if he is resting he will get well.

John 11:13

but Jesus had spoken about his death, but they thought that about the repose of sleep he speaketh.

But Jesus spoke of his death; and they thought that he spoke of the repose of sleep.

Jesus, however, was talking of his death: but they had the idea that he was talking about taking rest in sleep.

John 11:14

Then, therefore, Jesus said to them freely, `Lazarus hath died;

Then therefore Jesus said to them plainly: Lazarus is dead.

Then Jesus said to them clearly, Lazarus is dead.

John 11:15

and I rejoice, for your sake, (that ye may believe,) that I was not there; but we may go to him;`

And I am glad, for your sakes, that I was not there, that you may believe: but let us go to him.

And because of you I am glad I was not there, so that you may have faith; but let us go to him.

John 11:16

therefore said Thomas, who is called Didymus, to the fellow-disciples, `We may go we also, that we may die with him,`

Thomas therefore, who is called Didymus, said to his fellow disciples: Let us also go, that we may die with him.

Then Thomas, who was named Didymus, said to the other disciples, Let us go so that we may be with him in death.

John 11:17

Jesus, therefore, having come, found him having been four days already in the tomb.

Jesus therefore came, and found that he had been four days already in the grave.

Now when Jesus came, he made the discovery that Lazarus had been put into the earth four days before.

John 11:18

And Bethany was nigh to Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off,

(Now Bethania was near Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off.)

Now Bethany was near to Jerusalem, about two miles away;

John 11:19

and many of the Jews had come unto Martha and Mary, that they might comfort them concerning their brother;

And many of the Jews were come to Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother.

And a number of Jews had come to Martha and Mary to give them comfort about their brother.

John 11:20

Martha, therefore, when she heard that Jesus doth come, met him, and Mary kept sitting in the house.

Martha therefore, as soon as she heard that Jesus had come, went to meet him: but Mary sat at home.

When Martha had the news that Jesus was on the way, she went out to him, but Mary did not go from the house.

John 11:21

Martha, therefore, said unto Jesus, `Sir, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died;

Martha therefore said to Jesus: Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.

Then Martha said to Jesus, Lord, if you had been here my brother would not be dead.

John 11:22

but even now, I have known that whatever thou mayest ask of God, God will give to thee;`

But now also I know that whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give it thee.

But I am certain that, even now, whatever request you make to God, God will give it to you.

John 11:23

Jesus saith to her, `Thy brother shall rise again.`

Jesus saith to her: Thy brother shall rise again.

Jesus said to her, Your brother will come to life again.

John 11:24

Martha saith to him, `I have known that he will rise again, in the rising again in the last day;`

Martha saith to him: I know that he shall rise again, in the resurrection at the last day.

Martha said to him, I am certain that he will come to life again when all come back from the dead at the last day.

John 11:25

Jesus said to her, `I am the rising again, and the life; he who is believing in me, even if he may die, shall live;

Jesus said to her: I am the resurrection and the life: he that believeth in me, although he be dead, shall live:

Jesus said to her, I am myself that day and that life; he who has faith in me will have life even if he is dead;

John 11:26

and every one who is living and believing in me shall not die to the age;

And every one that liveth, and believeth in me, shall not die for ever. Believest thou this?

And no one who is living and has faith in me will ever see death. Is this your faith?

John 11:27

believest thou this?` she saith to him, `Yes, sir, I have believed that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, who is coming to the world.`

She saith to him: Yea, Lord, I have believed that thou art Christ the Son of the living God, who art come into this world.

She said to him, Yes, Lord: my faith is that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who was to come into the world.

John 11:28

And these things having said, she went away, and called Mary her sister privately, saying, `The Teacher is present, and doth call thee;`

And when she had said these things, she went, and called her sister Mary secretly, saying: The master is come, and calleth for thee.

And having said this, she went away and said secretly to her sister Mary, The Master is here and has sent for you.

John 11:29

she, when she heard, riseth up quickly, and doth come to him;

She, as soon as she heard this, riseth quickly, and cometh to him.

And Mary, hearing this, got up quickly and went to him.

John 11:30

and Jesus had not yet come to the village, but was in the place where Martha met him;

For Jesus was not yet come into the town: but he was still in that place where Martha had met him.

Now Jesus had not at this time come into the town, but was still in the place where Martha had seen him.

John 11:31

the Jews, therefore, who were with her in the house, and were comforting her, having seen Mary that she rose up quickly and went forth, followed her, saying `She doth go away to the tomb, that she may weep there.`

The Jews therefore, who were with her in the house, and comforted her, when they saw Mary that she rose up speedily and went out, followed her, saying: She goeth to the grave to weep there.

Then the Jews who were with her in the house, comforting her, when they saw Mary get up quickly and go out, went after her in the belief that she was going to the place of the dead and would be weeping there.

John 11:32

Mary, therefore, when she came where Jesus was, having seen him, fell at his feet, saying to him, `Sir, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died;`

When Mary therefore was come where Jesus was, seeing him, she fell down at his feet, and saith to him: Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.

When Mary came to where Jesus was and saw him, she went down at his feet, saying, Lord, if you had been here my brother would not be dead.

John 11:33

Jesus, therefore, when he saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her weeping, did groan in the spirit, and troubled himself, and he said,

Jesus, therefore, when he saw her weeping, and the Jews that were come with her, weeping, groaned in the spirit, and troubled himself,

And when Jesus saw her weeping, and saw the Jews weeping who came with her, his spirit was moved and he was troubled,

John 11:34

`Where have ye laid him?` they say to him, `Sir, come and see;`

And said: Where have you laid him? They say to him: Lord, come and see.

And said, Where have you put him? They said, Come and see, Lord.

John 11:35

Jesus wept.

And Jesus wept.

And Jesus himself was weeping.

John 11:36

The Jews, therefore, said, `Lo, how he was loving him!`

The Jews therefore said: Behold how he loved him.

So the Jews said, See how dear he was to him!

John 11:37

and certain of them said, `Was not this one, who did open the eyes of the blind man, able to cause that also this one might not have died?`

But some of them said: Could not he that opened the eyes of the man born blind, have caused that this man should not die?

But some of them said, This man, who made open the eyes of the blind man, was he not able to keep his friend from death?

John 11:38

Jesus, therefore, again groaning in himself, cometh to the tomb, and it was a cave, and a stone was lying upon it,

Jesus therefore again groaning in himself, cometh to the sepulchre. Now it was a cave; and a stone was laid over it.

So Jesus, deeply troubled in heart, came to the place of the dead. It was a hole in the rock, and a stone was over the opening.

John 11:39

Jesus saith, `Take ye away the stone;` the sister of him who hath died Martha saith to him, `Sir, already he stinketh, for he is four days dead;`

Jesus saith: Take away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith to him: Lord, by this time he stinketh, for he is now of four days.

Jesus said, Take away the stone. Martha, the sister of him who was dead, said, Lord, by this time the body will be smelling, for he has been dead four days.

John 11:40

Jesus saith to her, `Said I not to thee, that if thou mayest believe, thou shalt see the glory of God?`

Jesus saith to her: Did not I say to thee, that if thou believe, thou shalt see the glory of God?

Jesus said to her, Did I not say to you that if you had faith you would see the glory of God?

John 11:41

They took away, therefore, the stone where the dead was laid, and Jesus lifted his eyes upwards, and said, `Father, I thank Thee, that Thou didst hear me;

They took therefore the stone away. And Jesus lifting up his eyes said: Father, I give thee thanks that thou hast heard me.

So they took away the stone. And Jesus, looking up to heaven, said, Father, I give praise to you for hearing me.

John 11:42

and I knew that Thou always dost hear me, but, because of the multitude that is standing by, I said [it], that they may believe that Thou didst send me.`

And I knew that thou hearest me always; but because of the people who stand about have I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me.

I was certain that your ears are at all times open to me, but I said it because of these who are here, so that they may see that you sent me.

John 11:43

And these things saying, with a loud voice he cried out, `Lazarus, come forth;`

When he had said these things, he cried with a loud voice: Lazarus, come forth.

Then he said in a loud voice, Lazarus, come out!

John 11:44

and he who died came forth, being bound feet and hands with grave-clothes, and his visage with a napkin was bound about; Jesus saith to them, `Loose him, and suffer to go.`

And presently he that had been dead came forth, bound feet and hands with winding bands; and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus said to them: Loose him, and let him go.

And he who was dead came out, with linen bands folded tightly about his hands and feet, and a cloth about his face. Jesus said to them, Make him free and let him go.

John 11:45

Many, therefore, of the Jews who came unto Mary, and beheld what Jesus did, believed in him;

Many therefore of the Jews, who were come to Mary and Martha, and had seen the things that Jesus did, believed in him.

Then a number of the Jews who had come to Mary and had seen the things which Jesus did had belief in him.

John 11:46

but certain of them went away unto the Pharisees, and told them what Jesus did;

But some of them went to the Pharisees, and told them the things that Jesus had done.

But some of them went to the Pharisees with the news of what Jesus had done.

John 11:47

the chief priests, therefore, and the Pharisees, gathered together a sanhedrim, and said, `What may we do? because this man doth many signs?

The chief priests therefore, and the Pharisees, gathered a council, and said: What do we, for this man doth many miracles?

Then the high priests and the Pharisees had a meeting and said, What are we doing? This man is doing a number of signs.

John 11:48

if we may let him alone thus, all will believe in him; and the Romans will come, and will take away both our place and nation.`

If we let him alone so, all will believe in him; and the Romans will come, and take away our place and nation.

If we let him go on in this way, everybody will have belief in him and the Romans will come and take away our place and our nation.

John 11:49

and a certain one of them, Caiaphas, being chief priest of that year, said to them, `Ye have not known anything,

But one of them, named Caiphas, being the high priest that year, said to them: You know nothing.

But one of them, Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them, You have no knowledge of anything;

John 11:50

nor reason that it is good for us that one man may die for the people, and not the whole nation perish.`

Neither do you consider that it is expedient for you that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not.

You do not see that it is in your interest for one man to be put to death for the people, so that all the nation may not come to destruction.

John 11:51

And this he said not of himself, but being chief priest of that year, he did prophesy that Jesus was about to die for the nation,

And this he spoke not of himself: but being the high priest of that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for the nation.

He did not say this of himself, but being the high priest that year he said, as a prophet, that Jesus would be put to death for the nation;

John 11:52

and not for the nation only, but that also the children of God, who have been scattered abroad, he may gather together into one.

And not only for the nation, but to gather together in one the children of God, that were dispersed.

And not for that nation only, but for the purpose of uniting in one body the children of God all over the world.

John 11:53

From that day, therefore, they took counsel together that they may kill him;

From that day therefore they devised to put him to death.

And from that day they took thought together how to put him to death.

John 11:54

Jesus, therefore, was no more freely walking among the Jews, but went away thence to the region nigh the wilderness, to a city called Ephraim, and there he tarried with his disciples.

Wherefore Jesus walked no more openly among the Jews; but he went into a country near the desert, unto a city that is called Ephrem, and there he abode with his disciples.

So Jesus no longer went about publicly among the Jews, but went from there into the country near to the waste land, to a town named Ephraim, where he was for some time with the disciples.

John 11:55

And the passover of the Jews was nigh, and many went up to Jerusalem out of the country before the passover, that they might purify themselves;

And the pasch of the Jews was at hand; and many from the country went up to Jerusalem, before the pasch to purify themselves.

Now the Passover of the Jews was near, and numbers of people went up from the country to Jerusalem to make themselves clean before the Passover.

John 11:56

they were seeking, therefore, Jesus, and said one with another, standing in the temple, `What doth appear to you that he may not come to the feast?`

They sought therefore for Jesus; and they discoursed one with another, standing in the temple: What think you that he is not come to the festival day? And the chief priests and Pharisees had given a commandment, that if any man knew where he was, he should tell, that they might apprehend him.

They were looking for Jesus and saying to one another while they were in the Temple, What is your opinion? Will he not come to the feast?

John 11:57

and both the chief priests and the Pharisees had given a command, that if any one may know where he is, he may shew [it], so that they may seize him.

Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that if anyone had knowledge where he was, he was to give them word, so that they might take him.
