John 18:1 | These things having said, Jesus went forth with his disciples beyond the brook of Kedron, where was a garden, into which he entered, himself and his disciples, | When Jesus had said these things, he went forth with his disciples over the brook Cedron, where there was a garden, into which he entered with his disciples. | When Jesus had said these words he went out with his disciples over the stream Kedron to a garden, into which he went with his disciples. |
John 18:2 | and Judas also, who delivered him up, had known the place, because many times did Jesus assemble there with his disciples. | And Judas also, who betrayed him, knew the place; because Jesus had often resorted thither together with his disciples. | And Judas, who was false to him, had knowledge of the place because Jesus went there frequently with his disciples. |
John 18:3 | Judas, therefore, having taken the band and officers out of the chief priests and Pharisees, doth come thither with torches and lamps, and weapons; | Judas therefore having received a band of soldiers and servants from the chief priests and the Pharisees, cometh thither with lanterns and torches and weapons. | So Judas, getting a band of armed men and police from the chief priests and Pharisees, went there with lights and with arms. |
John 18:4 | Jesus, therefore, knowing all things that are coming upon him, having gone forth, said to them, `Whom do ye seek?` | Jesus therefore, knowing all things that should come upon him, went forth, and said to them: Whom seek ye? | Then Jesus, having knowledge of everything which was coming on him, went forward and said to them, Who are you looking for? |
John 18:5 | they answered him, `Jesus the Nazarene;` Jesus saith to them, `I am [he];` and Judas who delivered him up was standing with them; | They answered him: Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus saith to them: I am he. And Judas also, who betrayed him, stood with them. | Their answer was, Jesus the Nazarene. Jesus said, I am he. And Judas, who was false to him, was there at their side. |
John 18:6 | when, therefore, he said to them `I am [he],` they went away backward, and fell to the ground. | As soon therefore as he had said to them: I am he; they went backward, and fell to the ground. | And when he said to them, I am he, they went back, falling to the earth. |
John 18:7 | Again, therefore, he questioned them, `Whom do ye seek?` and they said, `Jesus the Nazarene;` | Again therefore he asked them: Whom seek ye? And they said, Jesus of Nazareth. | So again he put the question to them, Who are you looking for? And they said, Jesus the Nazarene. |
John 18:8 | Jesus answered, `I said to you that I am [he]; if, then, me ye seek, suffer these to go away;` | Jesus answered, I have told you that I am he. If therefore you seek me, let these go their way. | Jesus made answer, I have said that I am he; if you are looking for me, let these men go away. |
John 18:9 | that the word might be fulfilled that he said `Those whom Thou hast given to me, I did not lose of them even one.` | That the word might be fulfilled which he said: Of them whom thou hast given me, I have not lost any one. | (He said this so that his words might come true, I have kept safe all those whom you gave to me.) |
John 18:10 | Simon Peter, therefore, having a sword, drew it, and struck the chief priest`s servant, and cut off his right ear and the name of the servant was Malchus | Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it, and struck the servant of the high priest, and cut off his right ear. And the name of the servant was Malchus. | Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, took it out and gave the high priest's servant a blow, cutting off his right ear. The servant's name was Malchus. |
John 18:11 | Jesus, therefore, said to Peter, `Put the sword into the sheath; the cup that the Father hath given to me, may I not drink it?` | Jesus therefore said to Peter: Put up thy sword into the scabbard. The chalice which my Father hath given me, shall I not drink it? | Then Jesus said to Peter, Put back your sword: am I not to take the cup which my Father has given to me? |
John 18:12 | The band, therefore, and the captain, and the officers of the Jews, took hold on Jesus, and bound him, | Then the band and the tribune, and the servants of the Jews, took Jesus, and bound him: | Then the band and the chief captain and the police took Jesus and put cords round him. |
John 18:13 | and they led him away to Annas first, for he was father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was chief priest of that year, | And they led him away to Annas first, for he was father in law to Caiphas, who was the high priest of that year. | They took him first to Annas, because Annas was the father-in-law of Caiaphas who was the high priest that year. |
John 18:14 | and Caiaphas was he who gave counsel to the Jews, that it is good for one man to perish for the people. | Now Caiphas was he who had given the counsel to the Jews: That it was expedient that one man should die for the people. | It was Caiaphas who had said to the Jews that it was in their interest for one man to be put to death for the people. |
John 18:15 | And following Jesus was Simon Peter, and the other disciple, and that disciple was known to the chief priest, and he entered with Jesus to the hall of the chief priest, | And Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple. And that disciple was known to the high priest, and went in with Jesus into the court of the high priest. | And Simon Peter went after Jesus with another disciple. Now that disciple was a friend of the high priest and he went in with Jesus into the house of the high priest; |
John 18:16 | and Peter was standing at the door without, therefore went forth the other disciple who was known to the chief priest, and he spake to the female keeping the door, and he brought in Peter. | But Peter stood at the door without. The other disciple therefore, who was known to the high priest, went out, and spoke to the portress, and brought in Peter. | But Peter was kept outside at the door. Then this other disciple, who was a friend of the high priest, came out and had a word with the girl who kept the door, and took Peter in. |
John 18:17 | Then said the maid keeping the door to Peter, `Art thou also of the disciples of this man?` he saith, `I am not;` | The maid therefore that was portress, saith to Peter: Art not thou also one of this man's disciples? He saith: I am not. | Then the girl who was the door-keeper said to Peter, Are you not one of this man's disciples? In answer he said, I am not. |
John 18:18 | and the servants and the officers were standing, having made a fire of coals, because it was cold, and they were warming themselves, and Peter was standing with them, and warming himself. | Now the servants and ministers stood at a fire of coals, because it was cold, and warmed themselves. And with them was Peter also, standing, and warming himself. | Now the servants and the police had made a fire of coals because it was cold; they were warming themselves in front of it and Peter was there with them, warming himself. |
John 18:19 | The chief priests, therefore, questioned Jesus concerning his disciples, and concerning his teaching; | The high priest therefore asked Jesus of his disciples, and of his doctrine. | Then the high priest put questions to Jesus about his disciples and his teaching. |
John 18:20 | Jesus answered him, `I spake freely to the world, I did always teach in a synagogue, and in the temple, where the Jews do always come together; and in secret I spake nothing; | Jesus answered him: I have spoken openly to the world: I have always taught in the synagogue, and in the temple, whither all the Jews resort; and in secret I have spoken nothing. | Jesus made answer, I said things openly to the world at all times; I have given my teaching in the Synagogues and in the Temple to which all the Jews come; and I have said nothing secretly. |
John 18:21 | why me dost thou question? question those having heard what I spake to them; lo, these have known what I said.` | Why asketh thou me? ask them who have heard what I have spoken unto them: behold they know what things I have said. | Why are you questioning me? put questions to my hearers about what I have said to them: they have knowledge of what I said. |
John 18:22 | And he having said these things, one of the officers standing by did give Jesus a slap, saying, `Thus dost thou answer the chief priest?` | And when he had said these things, one of the servants standing by, gave Jesus a blow, saying: Answerest thou the high priest so? | When he said this, one of the police by his side gave him a blow with his open hand, saying, Do you give such an answer to the high priest? |
John 18:23 | Jesus answered him, `If I spake ill, testify concerning the ill; and if well, why me dost thou smite?` | Jesus answered him: If I have spoken evil, give testimony of the evil; but if well, why strikest thou me? | Jesus said in answer, If I have said anything evil, give witness to the evil: but if I said what is true, why do you give me blows? |
John 18:24 | Annas then sent him bound to Caiaphas the chief priest. | And Annas sent him bound to Caiphas the high priest. | Then Annas sent him chained to Caiaphas, the high priest. |
John 18:25 | And Simon Peter was standing and warming himself, they said then to him, `Art thou also of his disciples?` he denied, and said, `I am not.` | And Simon Peter was standing, and warming himself. They said therefore to him: Art not thou also one of his disciples? He denied it, and said: I am not. | But Simon Peter was still there warming himself by the fire. They said to him, Are you not one of his disciples? He said, No, I am not. |
John 18:26 | One of the servants of the chief priest, being kinsman of him whose ear Peter cut off, saith, `Did not I see thee in the garden with him?` | One of the servants of the high priest (a kinsman to him whose ear Peter cut off) saith to him: Did I not see thee in the garden with him? | One of the servants of the high priest, a relation of him whose ear had been cut off by Peter, said, Did I not see you with him in the garden? |
John 18:27 | again, therefore, Peter denied, and immediately a cock crew. | Again therefore Peter denied; and immediately the cock crew. | Then again Peter said, No. And straight away a cock gave its cry. |
John 18:28 | They led, therefore, Jesus from Caiaphas to the praetorium, and it was early, and they themselves did not enter into the praetorium, that they might not be defiled, but that they might eat the passover; | Then they led Jesus from Caiphas to the governor's hall. And it was morning; and they went not into the hall, that they might not be defiled, but that they might eat the pasch. | So they took Jesus from the house of Caiaphas to the Praetorium. It was early. They themselves did not go into the Praetorium, so that they might not become unclean, but might take the Passover. |
John 18:29 | Pilate, therefore, went forth unto them, and said, `What accusation do ye bring against this man?` | Pilate therefore went out to them, and said: What accusation bring you against this man? | So Pilate came out to them and put the question: What have you to say against this man? |
John 18:30 | they answered and said to him, `If he were not an evil doer, we had not delivered him to thee.` | They answered, and said to him: If he were not a malefactor, we would not have delivered him up to thee. | They said to him in answer, If the man was not a wrongdoer we would not have given him up to you. |
John 18:31 | Pilate, therefore, said to them, `Take ye him ye and according to your law judge him;` the Jews, therefore, said to him, `It is not lawful to us to put any one to death;` | Pilate therefore said to them: Take him you, and judge him according to your law. The Jews therefore said to him: It is not lawful for us to put any man to death; | Then Pilate said to them, Take him yourselves and let him be judged by your law. But the Jews said to him, We have no right to put any man to death. |
John 18:32 | that the word of Jesus might be fulfilled which he said, signifying by what death he was about to die. | That the word of Jesus might be fulfilled, which he said, signifying what death he should die. | (That the word of Jesus might come true, pointing to the sort of death he would have.) |
John 18:33 | Pilate, therefore, entered into the praetorium again, and called Jesus, and said to him, `Thou art the King of the Jews?` | Pilate therefore went into the hall again, and called Jesus, and said to him: Art thou the king of the Jews? | Then Pilate went back into the Praetorium and sent for Jesus and said to him, Are you the King of the Jews? |
John 18:34 | Jesus answered him, `From thyself dost thou say this? or did others say it to thee about me?` | Jesus answered: Sayest thou this thing of thyself, or have others told it thee of me? | Jesus made answer, Do you say this of yourself, or did others say it about me? |
John 18:35 | Pilate answered, `Am I a Jew? thy nation, and the chief priests did deliver thee up to me; what didst thou?` | Pilate answered: Am I a Jew? Thy own nation, and the chief priests, have delivered thee up to me: what hast thou done? | Pilate said, Am I a Jew? Your nation and the chief priests have given you into my hands: what have you done? |
John 18:36 | Jesus answered, `My kingdom is not of this world; if my kingdom were of this world, my officers had struggled that I might not be delivered up to Jews; but now my kingdom is not from hence.` | Jesus answered: My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would certainly strive that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now my kingdom is not from hence. | Jesus said in answer, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom was of this world, my disciples would have made a good fight to keep me out of the hands of the Jews: but my kingdom is not here. |
John 18:37 | Pilate, therefore, said to him, `Art thou then a king?` Jesus answered, `Thou dost say [it]; because a king I am, I for this have been born, and for this I have come to the world, that I may testify to the truth; every one who is of the truth, doth hear my voice.` | Pilate therefore said to him: Art thou a king then? Jesus answered: Thou sayest that I am a king. For this was I born, and for this came I into the world; that I should give testimony to the truth. Every one that is of the truth, heareth my voice. | Then Pilate said to him, Are you then a king? Jesus made answer, You say that I am a king. For this purpose was I given birth, and for this purpose I came into the world, that I might give witness to what is true. Every lover of what is true gives ear to my voice. |
John 18:38 | Pilate saith to him, `What is truth?` and this having said, again he went forth unto the Jews, and saith to them, `I do find no fault in him; | Pilate saith to him: What is truth? And when he said this, he went out again to the Jews, and saith to them: I find no cause in him. | Pilate said to him, True? what is true? Having said this he went out again to the Jews and said to them, I see no wrong in him. |
John 18:39 | and ye have a custom that I shall release to you one in the passover; will ye, therefore, [that] I shall release to you the king of the Jews?` | But you have a custom that I should release one unto you at the pasch: will you, therefore, that I release unto you the king of the Jews? | But every year you make a request to me to let a prisoner go free at the Passover. Is it your desire that I let the King of the Jews go free? |
John 18:40 | therefore they all cried out again, saying, `Not this one but Barabbas;` and Barabbas was a robber. | Then cried they all again, saying: Not this man, but Barabbas. Now Barabbas was a robber. | Then again they gave a loud cry, Not this man, but Barabbas. Now Barabbas was an outlaw. |
