Luke 14:1 | And it came to pass, on his going into the house of a certain one of the chiefs of the Pharisees, on a sabbath, to eat bread, that they were watching him, | And it came to pass, when Jesus went into the house of one of the chief of the Pharisees, on the sabbath day, to eat bread, that they watched him. | And it came to pass, as he went into the house of one of the rulers, [who was] of the Pharisees, to eat bread on [the] sabbath, that *they* were watching him. |
Luke 14:2 | and lo, there was a certain dropsical man before him; | And behold, there was a certain man before him that had the dropsy. | And behold, there was a certain dropsical [man] before him. |
Luke 14:3 | and Jesus answering spake to the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, `Is it lawful on the sabbath-day to heal?` | And Jesus answering, spoke to the lawyers and Pharisees, saying: Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath day? | And Jesus answering spoke unto the doctors of the law and Pharisees, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath? |
Luke 14:4 | and they were silent, and having taken hold of [him], he healed him, and let [him] go; | But they held their peace. But he taking him, healed him, and sent him away. | But they were silent. And taking him he healed him and let him go. |
Luke 14:5 | and answering them he said, `Of which of you shall an ass or ox fall into a pit, and he will not immediately draw it up on the sabbath-day?` | And answering them, he said: Which of you shall have an ass or an ox fall into a pit, and will not immediately draw him out, on the sabbath day? | And answering he said to them, Of which of you shall an ass or ox fall into a well, that he does not straightway pull him up on the sabbath day? |
Luke 14:6 | and they were not able to answer him again unto these things. | And they could not answer him to these things. | And they were not able to answer him to these things. |
Luke 14:7 | And he spake a simile unto those called, marking how they were choosing out the first couches, saying unto them, | And he spoke a parable also to them that were invited, marking how they chose the first seats at the table, saying to them: | And he spoke a parable to those that were invited, remarking how they chose out the first places, saying to them, |
Luke 14:8 | `When thou mayest be called by any one to marriage-feasts, thou mayest not recline on the first couch, lest a more honourable than thou may have been called by him, | When thou art invited to a wedding, sit not down in the first place, lest perhaps one more honourable than thou be invited by him: | When thou art invited by any one to a wedding, do not lay thyself down in the first place at table, lest perhaps a more honourable than thou be invited by him, |
Luke 14:9 | and he who did call thee and him having come shall say to thee, Give to this one place, and then thou mayest begin with shame to occupy the last place. | And he that invited thee and him, come and say to thee, Give this man place: and then thou begin with shame to take the lowest place. | and he who invited thee and him come and say to thee, Give place to this [man], and then thou begin with shame to take the last place. |
Luke 14:10 | `But, when thou mayest be called, having gone on, recline in the last place, that when he who called thee may come, he may say to thee, Friend, come up higher; then thou shalt have glory before those reclining with thee; | But when thou art invited, go, sit down in the lowest place; that when he who invited thee, cometh, he may say to thee: Friend, go up higher. Then shalt thou have glory before them that sit at table with thee. | But when thou hast been invited, go and put thyself down in the last place, that when he who has invited thee comes, he may say to thee, Friend, go up higher: then shalt thou have honour before all that are lying at table with thee; |
Luke 14:11 | because every one who is exalting himself shall be humbled, and he who is humbling himself shall be exalted.` | Because every one that exalteth himself, shall be humbled; and he that humbleth himself, shall be exalted. | for every one that exalts himself shall be abased, and he that abases himself shall be exalted. |
Luke 14:12 | And he said also to him who did call him, `When thou mayest make a dinner or a supper, be not calling thy friends, nor thy brethren, nor thy kindred, nor rich neighbours, lest they may also call thee again, and a recompense may come to thee; | And he said to him also that had invited him: When thou makest a dinner or a supper, call not thy friends, nor thy brethren, nor thy kinsmen, nor thy neighbours who are rich; lest perhaps they also invite thee again, and a recompense be made to thee. | And he said also to him that had invited him, When thou makest a dinner or a supper, call not thy friends, nor thy brethren, nor thy kinsfolk, nor rich neighbours, lest it may be they also should invite thee in return, and a recompense be made thee. |
Luke 14:13 | but when thou mayest make a feast, be calling poor, maimed, lame, blind, | But when thou makest a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the lame, and the blind; | But when thou makest a feast, call poor, crippled, lame, blind: |
Luke 14:14 | and happy thou shalt be, because they have not to recompense thee, for it shall be recompensed to thee in the rising again of the righteous.` | And thou shalt be blessed, because they have not wherewith to make thee recompense: for recompense shall be made thee at the resurrection of the just. | and thou shalt be blessed; for they have not [the means] to recompense thee; for it shall be recompensed thee in the resurrection of the just. |

Luke 14:17 | and he sent his servant at the hour of the supper to say to those having been called, Be coming, because now are all things ready. | And he sent his servant at the hour of supper to say to them that were invited, that they should come, for now all things are ready. | And he sent his bondman at the hour of supper to say to those who were invited, Come, for already all things are ready. |
Luke 14:18 | `And they began with one consent all to excuse themselves: The first said to him, A field I bought, and I have need to go forth and see it; I beg of thee, have me excused. | And they began all at once to make excuse. The first said to him: I have bought a farm, and I must needs go out and see it: I pray thee, hold me excused. | And all began, without exception, to excuse themselves. The first said to him, I have bought land, and I must go out and see it; I pray thee hold me for excused. |
Luke 14:19 | `And another said, Five yoke of oxen I bought, and I go on to prove them; I beg of thee, have me excused: | And another said: I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to try them: I pray thee, hold me excused. | And another said, I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to prove them; I pray thee hold me for excused. |
Luke 14:20 | and another said, A wife I married, and because of this I am not able to come. | And another said: I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come. | And another said, I have married a wife, and on this account I cannot come. |
Luke 14:21 | `And that servant having come, told to his lord these things, then the master of the house, having been angry, said to his servant, Go forth quickly to the broad places and lanes of the city, and the poor, and maimed, and lame, and blind, bring in hither. | And the servant returning, told these things to his lord. Then the master of the house, being angry, said to his servant: Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in hither the poor, and the feeble, and the blind, and the lame. | And the bondman came up and brought back word of these things to his lord. Then the master of the house, in anger, said to his bondman, Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring here the poor and crippled and lame and blind. |
Luke 14:22 | `And the servant said, Sir, it hath been done as thou didst command, and still there is room. | And the servant said: Lord, it is done as thou hast commanded, and yet there is room. | And the bondman said, Sir, it is done as thou hast commanded, and there is still room. |
Luke 14:23 | `And the lord said unto the servant, Go forth to the ways and hedges, and constrain to come in, that my house may be filled; | And the Lord said to the servant: Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled. | And the lord said to the bondman, Go out into the ways and fences and compel to come in, that my house may be filled; |
Luke 14:24 | for I say to you, that none of those men who have been called shall taste of my supper.` | But I say unto you, that none of those men that were invited, shall taste of my supper. | for I say to you, that not one of those men who were invited shall taste of my supper. |
Luke 14:25 | And there were going on with him great multitudes, and having turned, he said unto them, | And there went great multitudes with him. And turning, he said to them: | And great crowds went with him; and, turning round, he said to them, |
Luke 14:26 | `If any one doth come unto me, and doth not hate his own father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brothers, and sisters, and yet even his own life, he is not able to be my disciple; | If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple. | If any man come to me, and shall not hate his own father and mother, and wife, and children, and brothers, and sisters, yea, and his own life too, he cannot be my disciple; |
Luke 14:27 | and whoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, is not able to be my disciple. | And whosoever doth not carry his cross and come after me, cannot be my disciple. | and whoever does not carry his cross and come after me cannot be my disciple. |
Luke 14:28 | `For who of you, willing to build a tower, doth not first, having sat down, count the expense, whether he have the things for completing? | For which of you having a mind to build a tower, doth not first sit down, and reckon the charges that are necessary, whether he have wherewithal to finish it: | For which of you, desirous of building a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, if he have what [is needed] to complete it; |
Luke 14:29 | lest that he having laid a foundation, and not being able to finish, all who are beholding may begin to mock him, | Lest, after he hath laid the foundation, and is not able ti finish it, all that see it begin to mock him, | in order that, having laid the foundation of it, and not being able to finish it, all who see it do not begin to mock at him, |
Luke 14:30 | saying This man began to build, and was not able to finish. | Saying: This man began to build, and was not able to finish. | saying, This man began to build and was not able to finish? |
Luke 14:31 | `Or what king going on to engage with another king in war, doth not, having sat down, first consult if he be able with ten thousand to meet him who with twenty thousand is coming against him? | Or what king, about to go to make war against another king, doth not first sit down, and think whether he be able, with ten thousand, to meet him that, with twenty thousand, cometh against him? | Or what king, going on his way to engage in war with another king, does not, sitting down first, take counsel whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him coming against him with twenty thousand? |
Luke 14:32 | and if not so he being yet a long way off having sent an embassy, he doth ask the things for peace. | Or else, whilst the other is yet afar off, sending an embassy, he desireth conditions of peace. | and if not, while he is yet far off, having sent an embassy, he asks for terms of peace. |
Luke 14:33 | `So, then, every one of you who doth not take leave of all that he himself hath, is not able to be my disciple. | So likewise every one of you that doth not renounce all that he possesseth, cannot be my disciple. | Thus then every one of you who forsakes not all that is his own cannot be my disciple. |
Luke 14:34 | `The salt [is] good, but if the salt doth become tasteless, with what shall it be seasoned? | Salt is good. But if the salt shall lose its savour, wherewith shall it be seasoned? | Salt [then] [is] good, but if the salt also has become savourless, wherewith shall it be seasoned? |
Luke 14:35 | neither for land nor for manure is it fit they cast it without. He who is having ears to hear let him hear.` | It is neither profitable for the land nor for the dunghill, but shall be cast out. He that hath ears to hear, let him hear. | It is proper neither for land nor for dung; it is cast out. He that hath ears to hear, let him hear. |
