John 21:1 | After these things did Jesus manifest himself again to the disciples on the sea of Tiberias, and he did manifest himself thus: | After this, Jesus shewed himself again to the disciples at the sea of Tiberias. And he shewed himself after this manner. | After this, Jesus again showed Himself to the disciples. It was at the Lake of Tiberias. The circumstances were as follows. |
John 21:2 | There were together Simon Peter, and Thomas who is called Didymus, and Nathanael from Cana of Galilee, and the [sons] of Zebedee, and two others of his disciples. | There were together Simon Peter, and Thomas, who is called Didymus, and Nathanael, who was of Cana of Galilee, and the sons of Zebedee, and two others of his disciples. | Simon Peter was with Thomas, called the Twin, Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zabdi, and two others of the Master's disciples. |
John 21:3 | Simon Peter saith to them, `I go away to fish;` they say to him, `We go we also with thee;` they went forth and entered into the boat immediately, and on that night they caught nothing. | Simon Peter saith to them: I go a fishing. They say to him: We also come with thee. And they went forth, and entered into the ship: and that night they caught nothing. | Simon Peter said to them, "I am going fishing." "We will go too," said they. So they set out and went on board their boat; but they caught nothing that night. |
John 21:4 | And morning being now come, Jesus stood at the shore, yet indeed the disciples did not know that it is Jesus; | But when the morning was come, Jesus stood on the shore: yet the disciples knew not that it was Jesus. | When, however, day was now dawning, Jesus stood on the beach, though the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. |
John 21:5 | Jesus, therefore, saith to them, `Lads, have ye any meat?` | Jesus therefore said to them: Children, have you any meat? They answered him: No. | He called to them. "Children," He said, "have you any food there?" "No," they answered. |
John 21:6 | they answered him, `No;` and he said to them, `Cast the net at the right side of the boat, and ye shall find;` they cast, therefore, and no longer were they able to draw it, from the multitude of the fishes. | He saith to them: Cast the net on the right side of the ship, and you shall find. They cast therefore; and now they were not able to draw it, for the multitude of fishes. | "Throw the net in on the right hand side," He said, "and you will find fish." So they threw the net in, and now they could scarcely drag it along for the quantity of fish. |
John 21:7 | That disciple, therefore, whom Jesus was loving saith to Peter, `The Lord it is!` Simon Peter, therefore, having heard that it is the Lord, did gird on the outer coat, (for he was naked,) and did cast himself into the sea; | That disciple therefore whom Jesus loved, said to Peter: It is the Lord. Simon Peter, when he heard that it was the Lord, girt his coat about him, (for he was naked,) and cast himself into the sea. | This made the disciple whom Jesus loved say to Peter, "It is the Master." Simon Peter therefore, when he heard the words, "It is the Master," drew on his fisherman's shirt for he had not been wearing it put on his girdle, and sprang into the water. |
John 21:8 | and the other disciples came by the little boat, for they were not far from the land, but as it were about two hundred cubits off, dragging the net of the fishes; | But the other disciples came in the ship, (for they were not far from the land, but as it were two hundred cubits,) dragging the net with fishes. | But the rest of the disciples came in the small boat (for they were not far from land only about a hundred yards off), dragging the net full of fish. |
John 21:9 | when, therefore, they came to the land, they behold a fire of coals lying, and a fish lying on it, and bread. | As soon then as they came to land, they saw hot coals lying, and a fish laid thereon, and bread. | As soon as they landed, they saw a charcoal fire burning there, with fish broiling on it, and bread close by. |
John 21:10 | Jesus saith to them, `Bring ye from the fishes that ye caught now;` | Jesus saith to them: Bring hither of the fishes which you have now caught. | Jesus told them to fetch some of the fish which they had just caught. |
John 21:11 | Simon Peter went up, and drew the net up on the land, full of great fishes, an hundred fifty and three, and though they were so many, the net was not rent. | Simon Peter went up, and drew the net to land, full of great fishes, one hundred and fifty-three. And although there were so many, the net was not broken. | So Simon Peter went on board the boat and drew the net ashore full of large fish, 153 in number; and yet, although there were so many, the net had not broken. |
John 21:12 | Jesus saith to them, `Come ye, dine;` and none of the disciples was venturing to inquire of him, `Who art thou?` knowing that it is the Lord; | Jesus saith to them: Come, and dine. And none of them who were at meat, durst ask him: Who art thou? knowing that it was the Lord. | "Come this way and have breakfast," said Jesus. But not one of the disciples ventured to question Him as to who He was, for they felt sure that it was the Master. |
John 21:13 | Jesus, therefore, doth come and take the bread and give to them, and the fish in like manner; | And Jesus cometh and taketh bread, and giveth them, and fish in like manner. | Then Jesus came and took the bread and gave them some, and the fish in the same way. |
John 21:14 | this [is] now a third time Jesus was manifested to his disciples, having been raised from the dead. | This is now the third time that Jesus was manifested to his disciples, after he was risen from the dead. | This was now the third occasion on which Jesus showed Himself to the disciples after He had risen from among the dead. |
John 21:15 | When, therefore, they dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, `Simon, [son] of Jonas, dost thou love me more than these?` he saith to him, `Yes, Lord; thou hast known that I dearly love thee;` he saith to him, `Feed my lambs.` | When therefore they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter: Simon son of John, lovest thou me more than these? He saith to him: Yea, Lord, thou knowest that I love thee. He saith to him: Feed my lambs. | When they had finished breakfast, Jesus asked Simon Peter, "Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these others do?" "Yes, Master," was his answer; "you know that you are dear to me." "Then feed my lambs," replied Jesus. |
John 21:16 | He saith to him again, a second time, `Simon, [son] of Jonas, dost thou love me?` he saith to him, `Yes, Lord; thou hast known that I dearly love thee;` he saith to him, `Tend my sheep.` | He saith to him again: Simon, son of John, lovest thou me? He saith to him: Yea, Lord, thou knowest that I love thee. He saith to him: Feed my lambs. | Again a second time He asked him, "Simon, son of John, do you love me?" "Yes, Master," he said, "you know that you are dear to me." "Then be a shepherd to my sheep," He said. |
John 21:17 | He saith to him the third time, `Simon, [son] of Jonas, dost thou dearly love me?` Peter was grieved that he said to him the third time, `Dost thou dearly love me?` and he said to him, `Lord, thou hast known all things; thou dost know that I dearly love thee.` Jesus saith to him, `Feed my sheep; | He said to him the third time: Simon, son of John, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved, because he had said to him the third time: Lovest thou me? And he said to him: Lord, thou knowest all things: thou knowest that I love thee. He said to him: Feed my sheep. | A third time Jesus put the question: "Simon, son of John, am I dear to you?" It grieved Peter that Jesus asked him the third time, "Am I dear to you?" "Master," he replied, "you know everything, you can see that you are dear to me." "Then feed my much-loved sheep," said Jesus. |
John 21:18 | verily, verily, I say to thee, When thou wast younger, thou wast girding thyself and wast walking whither thou didst will, but when thou mayest be old, thou shalt stretch forth thy hands, and another will gird thee, and shall carry [thee] whither thou dost not will;` | Amen, amen I say to thee, when thou wast younger, thou didst gird thyself, and didst walk where thou wouldst. But when thou shalt be old, thou shalt stretch forth thy hands, and another shall gird thee, and lead thee whither thou wouldst not. | "In most solemn truth I tell you that whereas, when you were young, you used to put on your girdle and walk whichever way you chose, when you have grown old you will stretch out your arms and some one else will put a girdle round you and carry you where you have no wish to go." |
John 21:19 | and this he said, signifying by what death he shall glorify God; and having said this, he saith to him, `Be following me.` | And this he said, signifying by what death he should glorify God. And when he had said this, he saith to him: Follow me. | This He said to indicate the kind of death by which that disciple would bring glory to God; and after speaking thus He said to him, "Follow me." |
John 21:20 | And Peter having turned about doth see the disciple whom Jesus was loving following, (who also reclined in the supper on his breast, and said, `Sir, who is he who is delivering thee up?`) | Peter turning about, saw that disciple whom Jesus loved following, who also leaned on his breast at supper, and said: Lord, who is he that shall betray thee? | Peter turned round and noticed the disciple whom Jesus loved following the one who at the supper had leaned back on His breast and had asked, "Master, who is it that is betraying you?" |
John 21:21 | Peter having seen this one, saith to Jesus, `Lord, and what of this one?` | Him therefore when Peter had seen, he saith to Jesus: Lord, and what shall this man do? | On seeing him, Peter asked Jesus, "And, Master, what about him?" |
John 21:22 | Jesus saith to him, `If him I will to remain till I come, what to thee? be thou following me.` This word, therefore, went forth to the brethren that that disciple doth not die, | Jesus saith to him: So I will have him to remain till I come, what is it to thee? follow thou me. | "If I desire him to remain till I come," replied Jesus, "what concern is that of yours? You, yourself, must follow me." |
John 21:23 | yet Jesus did not say to him, that he doth not die, but, `If him I will to remain till I come, what to thee?` | This saying therefore went abroad among the brethren, that that disciple should not die. And Jesus did not say to him: He should not die; but, So I will have him to remain till I come, what is it to thee? | Hence the report spread among the brethren that that disciple would never die. Yet Jesus did not say, "He is not to die," but, "If I desire him to remain till I come, what concern is that of yours?" |
John 21:24 | this is the disciple who is testifying concerning these things, and he wrote these things, and we have known that his testimony is true. | This is that disciple who giveth testimony of these things, and hath written these things; and we know that his testimony is true. | That is the disciple who gives his testimony as to these matters, and has written this history; and we know that his testimony is true. |
John 21:25 | And there are also many other things as many as Jesus did which, if they may be written one by one, not even the world itself I think to have place for the books written. Amen. | But there are also many other things which Jesus did; which, if they were written every one, the world itself, I think, would not be able to contain the books that should be written. | But there are also many other things which Jesus did so vast a number indeed that if they were all described in detail, I suppose that the world itself could not contain the books that would have to be written. |
