Matthew 16:1 | And the Pharisees and Sadducees having come, tempting, did question him, to shew to them a sign from the heaven, | And there came to him the Pharisees and Sadduccees tempting: and they asked him to shew them a sign from heaven. | Here the Pharisees and Sadducees came to Him; and, to make trial of Him, they asked Him to show them a sign in the sky. |
Matthew 16:2 | and he answering said to them, `Evening having come, ye say, Fair weather, for the heaven is red, | But he answered and said to them: When it is evening, you say, It will be fair weather, for the sky is red. | He replied, "In the evening you say, `It will be fine weather, for the sky is red;' |
Matthew 16:3 | and at morning, Foul weather to-day, for the heaven is red gloomy; hypocrites, the face of the heavens indeed ye do know to discern, but the signs of the times ye are not able! | And in the morning: To day there will be a storm, for the sky is red and lowering. You know then how to discern the face of the sky: and can you not know the signs of the times? | and in the morning, `It will be rough weather to-day, for the sky is red and murky.' You learn how to distinguish the aspect of the heavens, but the signs of the times you cannot. |
Matthew 16:4 | `A generation evil and adulterous doth seek a sign, and a sign shall not be given to it, except the sign of Jonah the prophet;` and having left them he went away. | A wicked and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign: and a sign shall not be given it, but the sign of Jonas the prophet. And he left them, and went away. | A wicked and faithless generation are eager for a sign; but none shall be given to them except the sign of Jonah." and He left them and went away. |
Matthew 16:5 | And his disciples having come to the other side, forgot to take loaves, | And when his disciples were come over the water, they had forgotten to take bread. | When the disciples arrived at the other side of the Lake, they found that they had forgotten to bring any bread; |
Matthew 16:6 | and Jesus said to them, `Beware, and take heed of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees;` | Who said to them: Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees. | and when Jesus said to them, "See to it: beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees," |
Matthew 16:7 | and they were reasoning in themselves, saying, `Because we took no loaves.` | But they thought within themselves, saying: Because we have taken no bread. | they reasoned among themselves, saying, "It is because we have not brought any bread." |
Matthew 16:8 | And Jesus having known, said to them, `Why reason ye in yourselves, ye of little faith, because ye took no loaves? | And Jesus knowing it, said: Why do you think within yourselves, O ye of little faith, for that you have no bread? | Jesus perceived this and said, "Why are you reasoning among yourselves, you men of little faith, because you have no bread? |

Matthew 16:11 | how do ye not understand that I did not speak to you of bread to take heed of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees?` | Why do you not understand that it was not concerning the bread I said to you: Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees? | How is it you do not understand that it was not about bread that I spoke to you? But beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees." |
Matthew 16:12 | Then they understood that he did not say to take heed of the leaven of the bread, but of the teaching, of the Pharisees and Sadducees. | Then they understood that he said not that they should beware of the leaven of bread, but of the doctrine of the Pharisees and Sadducees. | Then they perceived that He had not warned them against bread-yeast, but against the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees. |
Matthew 16:13 | And Jesus, having come to the parts of Cesarea Philippi, was asking his disciples, saying, `Who do men say me to be the Son of Man?` | And Jesus came into the quarters of Cesarea Philippi: and he asked his disciples, saying: Whom do men say that the Son of man is? | When He arrived in the neighbourhood of Caesarea Philippi, Jesus questioned His disciples. "Who do people say that the Son of Man is?" He asked. |
Matthew 16:14 | and they said, `Some, John the Baptist, and others, Elijah, and others, Jeremiah, or one of the prophets.` | But they said: Some John the Baptist, and other some Elias, and others Jeremias, or one of the prophets. | "Some say John the Baptist," they replied; "others Elijah; others Jeremiah or one of the Prophets." |
Matthew 16:15 | He saith to them, `And ye who do ye say me to be?` | Jesus saith to them: But whom do you say that I am? | "But you, who do you say that I am?" He asked again. |
Matthew 16:16 | and Simon Peter answering said, `Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.` | Simon Peter answered and said: Thou art Christ, the Son of the living God. | "You," replied Simon Peter, "are the Christ, the Son of the ever-living God." |
Matthew 16:17 | And Jesus answering said to him, `Happy art thou, Simon Bar-Jona, because flesh and blood did not reveal [it] to thee, but my Father who is in the heavens. | And Jesus answering, said to him: Blessed art thou, Simon Bar-Jona: because flesh and blood hath not revealed it to thee, but my Father who is in heaven. | "Blessed are you, Simon Bar-jonah," said Jesus; "for mere human nature has not revealed this to you, but my Father in Heaven. |
Matthew 16:18 | `And I also say to thee, that thou art a rock, and upon this rock I will build my assembly, and gates of Hades shall not prevail against it; | And I say to thee: That thou art Peter; and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. | And I declare to you that you are Peter, and that upon this Rock I will build my Church, and the might of Hades shall not triumph over it. |
Matthew 16:19 | and I will give to thee the keys of the reign of the heavens, and whatever thou mayest bind upon the earth shall be having been bound in the heavens, and whatever thou mayest loose upon the earth shall be having been loosed in the heavens.` | And I will give to thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven. And whatsoever thou shalt bind upon earth, it shall be bound also in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose upon earth, it shall be loosed also in heaven. | I will give you the keys of the Kingdom of the Heavens; and whatever you bind on earth shall remain bound in Heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall remain loosed in Heaven." |
Matthew 16:20 | Then did he charge his disciples that they may say to no one that he is Jesus the Christ. | Then he commanded his disciples, that they should tell no one that he was Jesus the Christ. | Then He urged His disciples to tell no one that He was the Christ. |
Matthew 16:21 | From that time began Jesus to shew to his disciples that it is necessary for him to go away to Jerusalem, and to suffer many things from the elders, and chief priests, and scribes, and to be put to death, and the third day to rise. | From that time Jesus began to shew to his disciples, that he must go to Jerusalem, and suffer many things from the ancients and scribes and chief priests, and be put to death, and the third day rise again. | From this time Jesus began to explain to His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem, and suffer much cruelty from the Elders and the High Priests and the Scribes, and be put to death, and on the third day be raised to life again. |
Matthew 16:22 | And having taken him aside, Peter began to rebuke him, saying, `Be kind to thyself, sir; this shall not be to thee;` | And Peter taking him, began to rebuke him, saying: Lord, be it far from thee, this shall not be unto thee. | Then Peter took Him aside and began taking Him to task. "Master," he said, "God forbid; this will not be your lot." |
Matthew 16:23 | and he having turned, said to Peter, `Get thee behind me, adversary! thou art a stumbling-block to me, for thou dost not mind the things of God, but the things of men.` | Who turning, said to Peter: Go behind me, Satan, thou art a scandal unto me: because thou savourest not the things that are of God, but the things that are of men. | But He turned and said to Peter, "Get behind me, Adversary; you are a hindrance to me, because your thoughts are not God's thoughts, but men's." |
Matthew 16:24 | Then said Jesus to his disciples, `If any one doth will to come after me, let him disown himself, and take up his cross, and follow me, | Then Jesus said to his disciples: If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. | Then Jesus said to His disciples, "If any one desires to follow me, let him renounce self and take up his cross, and so be my follower. |
Matthew 16:25 | for whoever may will to save his life, shall lose it, and whoever may lose his life for my sake shall find it, | For he that will save his life, shall lose it: and he that shall lose his life for my sake, shall find it. | For whoever desires to save his life shall lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake shall find it. |
Matthew 16:26 | for what is a man profited if he may gain the whole world, but of his life suffer loss? or what shall a man give as an exchange for his life? | For what doth it profit a man, if he gain the whole world, and suffer the loss of his own soul? Or what exchange shall a man give for his soul? | Why, what benefit will it be to a man if he gains the whole world but forfeits his life? Or what shall a man give to buy back his life? |
Matthew 16:27 | `For, the Son of Man is about to come in the glory of his Father, with his messengers, and then he will reward each, according to his work. | For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels: and then will he render to every man according to his works. | For the Son of Man is soon to come in the glory of the Father with His angels, and then will He requite every man according to his actions. |
Matthew 16:28 | Verily I say to you, there are certain of those standing here who shall not taste of death till they may see the Son of Man coming in his reign.` | Amen I say to you, there are some of them that stand here, that shall not taste death, till they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom. | I solemnly tell you that some of those who are standing here will certainly not taste death till they have seen the Son of Man coming in His Kingdom." |
