Matthew 5:1 | And having seen the multitudes, he went up to the mount, and he having sat down, his disciples came to him, | And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his disciples came unto him: | And seeing great masses of people he went up into the mountain; and when he was seated his disciples came to him. |
Matthew 5:2 | and having opened his mouth, he was teaching them, saying: | And he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying, | And with these words he gave them teaching, saying, |
Matthew 5:3 | `Happy the poor in spirit because theirs is the reign of the heavens. | Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. | Happy are the poor in spirit: for the kingdom of heaven is theirs. |
Matthew 5:4 | `Happy the mourning because they shall be comforted. | Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted. | Happy are those who are sad: for they will be comforted. |
Matthew 5:5 | `Happy the meek because they shall inherit the land. | Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth. | Happy are the gentle: for the earth will be their heritage. |
Matthew 5:6 | `Happy those hungering and thirsting for righteousness because they shall be filled. | Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled. | Happy are those whose heart's desire is for righteousness: for they will have their desire. |
Matthew 5:7 | `Happy the kind because they shall find kindness. | Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy. | Happy are those who have mercy: for they will be given mercy. |
Matthew 5:8 | `Happy the clean in heart because they shall see God. | Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God. | Happy are the clean in heart: for they will see God. |
Matthew 5:9 | `Happy the peacemakers because they shall be called Sons of God. | Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God. | Happy are the peacemakers: for they will be named sons of God. |
Matthew 5:10 | `Happy those persecuted for righteousness` sake because theirs is the reign of the heavens. | Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. | Happy are those who are attacked on account of righteousness: for the kingdom of heaven will be theirs. |
Matthew 5:11 | `Happy are ye whenever they may reproach you, and may persecute, and may say any evil thing against you falsely for my sake | Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. | Happy are you when men give you a bad name, and are cruel to you, and say all evil things against you falsely, because of me. |
Matthew 5:12 | rejoice ye and be glad, because your reward [is] great in the heavens, for thus did they persecute the prophets who were before you. | Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you. | Be glad and full of joy; for great is your reward in heaven: for so were the prophets attacked who were before you. |
Matthew 5:13 | `Ye are the salt of the land, but if the salt may lose savour, in what shall it be salted? for nothing is it good henceforth, except to be cast without, and to be trodden down by men. | Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men. | You are the salt of the earth; but if its taste goes from the salt, how will you make it salt again? it is then good for nothing but to be put out and crushed under foot by men. |
Matthew 5:14 | `Ye are the light of the world, a city set upon a mount is not able to be hid; | Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. | You are the light of the world. A town put on a hill may be seen by all. |
Matthew 5:15 | nor do they light a lamp, and put it under the measure, but on the lamp-stand, and it shineth to all those in the house; | Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. | And a burning light is not put under a vessel, but on its table; so that its rays may be shining on all who are in the house. |
Matthew 5:16 | so let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works, and may glorify your Father who [is] in the heavens. | Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven. | Even so let your light be shining before men, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven. |
Matthew 5:17 | `Do not suppose that I came to throw down the law or the prophets I did not come to throw down, but to fulfill; | Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. | Let there be no thought that I have come to put an end to the law or the prophets. I have not come for destruction, but to make complete. |
Matthew 5:18 | for, verily I say to you, till that the heaven and the earth may pass away, one iota or one tittle may not pass away from the law, till that all may come to pass. | For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. | Truly I say to you, Till heaven and earth come to an end, not the smallest letter or part of a letter will in any way be taken from the law, till all things are done. |
Matthew 5:19 | `Whoever therefore may loose one of these commands the least and may teach men so, least he shall be called in the reign of the heavens, but whoever may do and may teach [them], he shall be called great in the reign of the heavens. | Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. | Whoever then goes against the smallest of these laws, teaching men to do the same, will be named least in the kingdom of heaven; but he who keeps the laws, teaching others to keep them, will be named great in the kingdom of heaven. |
Matthew 5:20 | `For I say to you, that if your righteousness may not abound above that of the scribes and Pharisees, ye may not enter to the reign of the heavens. | For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven. | For I say to you, If your righteousness is not greater than the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never go into the kingdom of heaven. |
Matthew 5:21 | `Ye heard that it was said to the ancients: Thou shalt not kill, and whoever may kill shall be in danger of the judgment; | Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment: | You have knowledge that it was said in old times, You may not put to death; and, Whoever puts to death will be in danger of being judged: |
Matthew 5:22 | but I I say to you, that every one who is angry at his brother without cause, shall be in danger of the judgment, and whoever may say to his brother, Empty fellow! shall be in danger of the sanhedrim, and whoever may say, Rebel! shall be in danger of the gehenna of the fire. | But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire. | But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be in danger of being judged; and he who says to his brother, Raca, will be in danger from the Sanhedrin; and whoever says, You foolish one, will be in danger of the hell of fire. |
Matthew 5:23 | `If, therefore, thou mayest bring thy gift to the altar, and there mayest remember that thy brother hath anything against thee, | Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee; | If then you are making an offering at the altar and there it comes to your mind that your brother has something against you, |
Matthew 5:24 | leave there thy gift before the altar, and go first be reconciled to thy brother, and then having come bring thy gift. | Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift. | While your offering is still before the altar, first go and make peace with your brother, then come and make your offering. |
Matthew 5:25 | `Be agreeing with thy opponent quickly, while thou art in the way with him, that the opponent may not deliver thee to the judge, and the judge may deliver thee to the officer, and to prison thou mayest be cast, | Agree with thine adversary quickly, whiles thou art in the way with him; lest at any time the adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison. | Come to an agreement quickly with him who has a cause against you at law, while you are with him on the way, for fear that he may give you up to the judge and the judge may give you to the police and you may be put into prison. |
Matthew 5:26 | verily I say to thee, thou mayest not come forth thence till that thou mayest pay the last farthing. | Verily I say unto thee, Thou shalt by no means come out thence, till thou hast paid the uttermost farthing. | Truly I say to you, You will not come out from there till you have made payment of the very last farthing. |
Matthew 5:27 | `Ye heard that it was said to the ancients: Thou shalt not commit adultery; | Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery: | You have knowledge that it was said, You may not have connection with another man's wife: |
Matthew 5:28 | but I I say to you, that every one who is looking on a woman to desire her, did already commit adultery with her in his heart. | But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart. | But I say to you that everyone whose eyes are turned on a woman with desire has had connection with her in his heart. |
Matthew 5:29 | `But, if thy right eye doth cause thee to stumble, pluck it out and cast from thee, for it is good to thee that one of thy members may perish, and not thy whole body be cast to gehenna. | And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell. | And if your right eye is a cause of trouble to you, take it out and put it away from you; because it is better to undergo the loss of one part, than for all your body to go into hell. |
Matthew 5:30 | `And, if thy right hand doth cause thee to stumble, cut it off, and cast from thee, for it is good to thee that one of thy members may perish, and not thy whole body be cast to gehenna. | And if thy right hand offend thee, cut it off, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell. | And if your right hand is a cause of trouble to you, let it be cut off and put it away from you; because it is better to undergo the loss of one part, than for all your body to go into hell. |
Matthew 5:31 | `And it was said, That whoever may put away his wife, let him give to her a writing of divorce; | It hath been said, Whosoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorcement: | Again, it was said, Whoever puts away his wife has to give her a statement in writing for this purpose: |
Matthew 5:32 | but I I say to you, that whoever may put away his wife, save for the matter of whoredom, doth make her to commit adultery; and whoever may marry her who hath been put away doth commit adultery. | But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery. | But I say to you that everyone who puts away his wife for any other cause but the loss of her virtue, makes her false to her husband; and whoever takes her as his wife after she is put away, is no true husband to her. |
Matthew 5:33 | `Again, ye heard that it was said to the ancients: Thou shalt not swear falsely, but thou shalt pay to the Lord thine oaths; | Again, ye have heard that it hath been said by them of old time, Thou shalt not forswear thyself, but shalt perform unto the Lord thine oaths: | Again, you have knowledge that it was said in old times, Do not take false oaths, but give effect to your oaths to the Lord: |
Matthew 5:34 | but I I say to you, not to swear at all; neither by the heaven, because it is the throne of God, | But I say unto you, Swear not at all; neither by heaven; for it is God's throne: | But I say to you, Take no oaths at all: not by the heaven, because it is the seat of God; |
Matthew 5:35 | nor by the earth, because it is His footstool, nor by Jerusalem, because it is a city of a great king, | Nor by the earth; for it is his footstool: neither by Jerusalem; for it is the city of the great King. | Or by the earth, because it is the resting-place for his foot; or by Jerusalem, because it is the town of the great King. |
Matthew 5:36 | nor by thy head mayest thou swear, because thou art not able one hair to make white or black; | Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black. | You may not take an oath by your head, because you are not able to make one hair white or black. |
Matthew 5:37 | but let your word be, Yes, Yes, No, No, and that which is more than these is of the evil. | But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil. | But let your words be simply, Yes or No: and whatever is more than these is of the Evil One. |
Matthew 5:38 | `Ye heard that it was said: Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth; | Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth: | You have knowledge that it was said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth: |
Matthew 5:39 | but I I say to you, not to resist the evil, but whoever shall slap thee on thy right cheek, turn to him also the other; | But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also. | But I say to you, Do not make use of force against an evil man; but to him who gives you a blow on the right side of your face let the left be turned. |
Matthew 5:40 | and whoever is willing to take thee to law, and thy coat to take suffer to him also the cloak. | And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloke also. | And if any man goes to law with you and takes away your coat, do not keep back your robe from him. |
Matthew 5:41 | `And whoever shall impress thee one mile, go with him two, | And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain. | And whoever makes you go one mile, go with him two. |
Matthew 5:42 | to him who is asking of thee be giving, and him who is willing to borrow from thee thou mayest not turn away. | Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away. | Give to him who comes with a request, and keep not your property from him who would for a time make use of it. |
Matthew 5:43 | `Ye heard that it was said: Thou shalt love thy neighbor, and shalt hate thine enemy; | Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy. | You have knowledge that it was said, Have love for your neighbour, and hate for him who is against you: |
Matthew 5:44 | but I I say to you, Love your enemies, bless those cursing you, do good to those hating you, and pray for those accusing you falsely, and persecuting you, | But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; | But I say to you, Have love for those who are against you, and make prayer for those who are cruel to you; |
Matthew 5:45 | that ye may be sons of your Father in the heavens, because His sun He doth cause to rise on evil and good, and He doth send rain on righteous and unrighteous. | That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust. | So that you may be the sons of your Father in heaven; for his sun gives light to the evil and to the good, and he sends rain on the upright man and on the sinner. |
Matthew 5:46 | `For, if ye may love those loving you, what reward have ye? do not also the tax-gatherers the same? | For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same? | For if you have love for those who have love for you, what credit is it to you? do not the tax-farmers the same? |
Matthew 5:47 | and if ye may salute your brethren only, what do ye abundant? do not also the tax-gatherers so? | And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? do not even the publicans so? | And if you say, Good day, to your brothers only, what do you do more than others? do not even the Gentiles the same? |
Matthew 5:48 | ye shall therefore be perfect, as your Father who [is] in the heavens is perfect. | Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect. | Be then complete in righteousness, even as your Father in heaven is complete. |
