Matthew 23:2saying, `On the seat of Moses sat down the scribes and the Pharisees;Saying, The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat: saying, The scribes and the Pharisees have set themselves down in Moses' seat:
Matthew 23:3all, then, as much as they may say to you to observe, observe and do, but according to their works do not, for they say, and do not;All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not. all things therefore, whatever they may tell you, do and keep. But do not after their works, for they say and do not,
Matthew 23:4for they bind together burdens heavy and grievous to be borne, and lay upon the shoulders of men, but with their finger they will not move them.For they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men's shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers. but bind burdens heavy and hard to bear, and lay them on the shoulders of men, but will not move them with their finger.
Matthew 23:5`And all their works they do to be seen by men, and they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the fringes of their garments,But all their works they do for to be seen of men: they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments, And all their works they do to be seen of men: for they make broad their phylacteries and enlarge the borders [of their garments],
Matthew 23:6they love also the chief couches in the supper, and the chief seats in the synagogues,And love the uppermost rooms at feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues, and love the chief place in feasts and the first seats in the synagogues,
Matthew 23:7and the salutations in the market-places, and to be called by men, Rabbi, Rabbi.And greetings in the markets, and to be called of men, Rabbi, Rabbi. and salutations in the market-places, and to be called of men, Rabbi, Rabbi.
Matthew 23:8`And ye ye may not be called Rabbi, for one is your director the Christ, and all ye are brethren;But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren. But *ye*, be not ye called Rabbi; for one is your instructor, and all *ye* are brethren.
Matthew 23:9and ye may not call [any] your father on the earth, for one is your Father, who is in the heavens,And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven. And call not [any one] your father upon the earth; for one is your Father, he who is in the heavens.
Matthew 23:10nor may ye be called directors, for one is your director the Christ.Neither be ye called masters: for one is your Master, even Christ. Neither be called instructors, for one is your instructor, the Christ.
Matthew 23:11And the greater of you shall be your ministrant,But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant. But the greatest of you shall be your servant.
Matthew 23:12and whoever shall exalt himself shall be humbled, and whoever shall humble himself shall be exalted.And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted. And whoever shall exalt himself shall be humbled, and whoever shall humble himself shall be exalted.
Matthew 23:13`Wo to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye shut up the reign of the heavens before men, for ye do not go in, nor those going in do ye suffer to enter.But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in. But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, for ye shut up the kingdom of the heavens before men; for *ye* do not enter, nor do ye suffer those that are entering to go in.
Matthew 23:14`Wo to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye eat up the houses of the widows, and for a pretence make long prayers, because of this ye shall receive more abundant judgment.Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation.
Matthew 23:15`Wo to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye go round the sea and the dry land to make one proselyte, and whenever it may happen ye make him a son of gehenna twofold more than yourselves.Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves. Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, for ye compass the sea and the dry [land] to make one proselyte, and when he is become [such], ye make him twofold more [the] son of hell than yourselves.
Matthew 23:16`Wo to you, blind guides, who are saying, Whoever may swear by the sanctuary, it is nothing, but whoever may swear by the gold of the sanctuary is debtor!Woe unto you, ye blind guides, which say, Whosoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gold of the temple, he is a debtor! Woe to you, blind guides, who say, Whosoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gold of the temple, he is a debtor.
Matthew 23:17Fools and blind! for which [is] greater, the gold, or the sanctuary that is sanctifying the gold?Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifieth the gold? Fools and blind, for which is greater, the gold, or the temple which sanctifies the gold?
Matthew 23:18`And, whoever may swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whoever may swear by the gift that is upon it is debtor!And, Whosoever shall swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whosoever sweareth by the gift that is upon it, he is guilty. And, Whosoever shall swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gift that is upon it is a debtor.
Matthew 23:19Fools and blind! for which [is] greater, the gift, or the altar that is sanctifying the gift?Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifieth the gift? [Fools and] blind ones, for which is greater, the gift, or the altar which sanctifies the gift?
Matthew 23:20`He therefore who did swear by the altar, doth swear by it, and by all things on it;Whoso therefore shall swear by the altar, sweareth by it, and by all things thereon. He therefore that swears by the altar swears by it and by all things that are upon it.
Matthew 23:21and he who did swear by the sanctuary, doth swear by it, and by Him who is dwelling in it;And whoso shall swear by the temple, sweareth by it, and by him that dwelleth therein. And he that swears by the temple swears by it and by him that dwells in it.
Matthew 23:22and he who did swear by the heaven, doth swear by the throne of God, and by Him who is sitting upon it.And he that shall swear by heaven, sweareth by the throne of God, and by him that sitteth thereon. And he that swears by heaven swears by the throne of God and by him that sits upon it.
Matthew 23:23`Wo to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye give tithe of the mint, and the dill, and the cumin, and did neglect the weightier things of the Law the judgment, and the kindness, and the faith; these it behoved [you] to do, and those not to neglect.Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone. Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, for ye pay tithes of mint and anise and cummin, and ye have left aside the weightier matters of the law, judgment and mercy and faith: these ye ought to have done and not have left those aside.
Matthew 23:24`Blind guides! who are straining out the gnat, and the camel are swallowing.Ye blind guides, which strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel. Blind guides, who strain out the gnat, but drink down the camel.
Matthew 23:25`Wo to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye make clean the outside of the cup and the plate, and within they are full of rapine and incontinence.Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess. Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the dish, but within they are full of rapine and intemperance.
Matthew 23:26`Blind Pharisee! cleanse first the inside of the cup and the plate, that the outside of them also may become clean.Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also. Blind Pharisee, make clean first the inside of the cup and of the dish, that their outside also may become clean.
Matthew 23:27`Wo to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye are like to whitewashed sepulchres, which outwardly indeed do appear beautiful, and within are full of bones of dead men, and of all uncleanness;Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men's bones, and of all uncleanness. Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, for ye are like whited sepulchres, which appear beautiful outwardly, but within are full of dead men's bones and all uncleanness.
Matthew 23:28so also ye outwardly indeed do appear to men righteous, and within ye are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity. Thus also *ye*, outwardly ye appear righteous to men, but within are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.
Matthew 23:29`Wo to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye build the sepulchres of the prophets, and adorn the tombs of the righteous,Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye build the tombs of the prophets, and garnish the sepulchres of the righteous, Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, for ye build the sepulchres of the prophets and adorn the tombs of the just,
Matthew 23:30and say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.And say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets. and ye say, If we had been in the days of our fathers we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.
Matthew 23:31So that ye testify to yourselves, that ye are sons of them who did murder the prophets;Wherefore ye be witnesses unto yourselves, that ye are the children of them which killed the prophets. So that ye bear witness of yourselves that ye are sons of those who slew the prophets:
Matthew 23:32and ye ye fill up the measure of your fathers.Fill ye up then the measure of your fathers. and *ye*, fill ye up the measure of your fathers.
Matthew 23:33`Serpents! brood of vipers! how may ye escape from the judgment of the gehenna?Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell? Serpents, offspring of vipers, how should ye escape the judgment of hell?
Matthew 23:34`Because of this, lo, I send to you prophets, and wise men, and scribes, and of them ye will kill and crucify, and of them ye will scourge in your synagogues, and will pursue from city to city;Wherefore, behold, I send unto you prophets, and wise men, and scribes: and some of them ye shall kill and crucify; and some of them shall ye scourge in your synagogues, and persecute them from city to city: Therefore, behold, *I* send unto you prophets, and wise men, and scribes; and [some] of them ye will kill and crucify, and [some] of them ye will scourge in your synagogues, and will persecute from city to city;
Matthew 23:35that on you may come all the righteous blood being poured out on the earth from the blood of Abel the righteous, unto the blood of Zacharias son of Barachias, whom ye slew between the sanctuary and the altar:That upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel unto the blood of Zacharias son of Barachias, whom ye slew between the temple and the altar. so that all righteous blood shed upon the earth should come upon *you*, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zacharias son of Barachias, whom ye slew between the temple and the altar.
Matthew 23:36verily I say to you, all these things shall come upon this generation.Verily I say unto you, All these things shall come upon this generation. Verily I say unto you, All these things shall come upon this generation.
Matthew 23:37`Jerusalem, Jerusalem, that art killing the prophets, and stoning those sent unto thee, how often did I will to gather thy children together, as a hen doth gather her own chickens under the wings, and ye did not will.O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not! Jerusalem, Jerusalem, [the city] that kills the prophets and stones those that are sent unto her, how often would I have gathered thy children as a hen gathers her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!
Matthew 23:38Lo, left desolate to you is your house;Behold, your house is left unto you desolate. Behold, your house is left unto you desolate;
Matthew 23:39for I say to you, ye may not see me henceforth, till ye may say, Blessed [is] he who is coming in the name of the Lord.`For I say unto you, Ye shall not see me henceforth, till ye shall say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord. for I say unto you, Ye shall in no wise see me henceforth until ye say, Blessed [be] he that comes in the name of [the] Lord.
